    The article contains terminological considerations concerning the term ‘camp literature’. In Polish literary studies it is most often referred to literature dealing with German Nazi camps, in particular concentration camps and death camps, and, less frequently, Soviet camps, especially forced labor camps. However, this definition turns out to be too narrow. It should also include the lesser-known works of Polish literature concerning, among others, the Polish internment camp (concentration camp) in Bereza Kartuska, communist labor camps set up in postwar Poland and the Spanish (Francoist) concentration camp in Miranda de Ebro. The term ‘camp literature’ could also include works on internment camps, prisoner camps, and even ghettos. The camp literaturę (not only Polish writings) requires, what is very important, a comparative approach.

    The review article presents three tomes of collective publication edited by T. Kranz, published by effort of National Museum Majdanek. It is dedicated to basic problems connected with museal and educational work in post-camp memory places. The articles of the third volume, published in June 2021, were discussed extensively, whereas in selected aspects alluded to content of other volumes, published in previous years.

    Artykuł dotyczy testamentu – gatunku na pograniczu prawa i literatury dokumentu osobistego. Autorka analizuje różnice w rozumieniu terminu oraz jego uwikłanie w czas i miejsce powstania, zwłaszcza testamentu, który został napisany w czasie Holocaustu. W artykule przedstawiono przypadek testamentów ostatnich więźniów obozu śmierci Kulmhof (dzisiejsze Chełmno), między innymi takich autorów jak Izrael Żurawski i Szymon Srebrnik – dwóch więźniów, którzy uciekli z Kulmhof w styczniu 1945 roku. Autorka artykułu śledzi również wszystkie sprzeczne informacje na temat wyżej wymienionych testamentów.
    The article is about a testament as an intermediate genre between legal and personal document literature. The author analyses differences in understanding of this term and how it depends on the time and place it was written in, especially in the case of a testament written during the Holocaust. The article presents cases of testaments of the last prisoners of the Kulmhof death camp (today Chełmno) including Izrael Żurwaski and Szymon Srebrnik – two prisoners who escaped from Kulmhof in January 1945. The author also tracks every contradictory information concerning these testaments.

    Przedmiotem artykułu jest analiza ankiet przeprowadzonych wśród studentów i studentek kierunku stosunki międzynarodowe Państwowej Wyższej Szkoły Zawodowej w Chełmie, odwiedzających Państwowe Muzeum na Majdanku. Zwracam uwagę na rolę, jaką odgrywa miejsce pamięci ulokowane na terenie byłego nazistowskiego obozu koncentracyjnego i obozu zagłady, a także sprawdzam, na ile wizyta w miejscu pamięci jest dla młodych ludzi ważnym przeżyciem i co w ich opinii jest najbardziej poruszającym momentem obecności w takim miejscu. Artykuł podzielony został na trzy części. W pierwszej, wprowadzającej, omawiam krótko historię powstania Państwowego Muzeum na Majdanku oraz to, w jaki sposób zmieniała się narracja o byłym obozie przekazywana przez Muzeum. W drugiej części sygnalizuję edukacyjną rolę miejscea pamięci. Pomijam tutaj toczącą się dyskusję o wszelkich strategiach edukacyjnych i praktykach pedagogicznych. Zdaję sobie sprawę, że tematyka ta jest opracowana i dostępna w literaturze przedmiotu, jej przywołanie i analiza nie jest jednak celem niniejszej pracy. W części trzeciej, najobszerniejszej, omawiam wyniki ankiet przeprowadzonych wśród osób odwiedzających Państwowe Muzeum na Majdanku.
    The subject of this article is the analysis of surveys conducted among International Relations students of the State School of Higher Education in Chełm visiting the State Museum at Majdanek. In my article I ask the question about the role of place of memory located on the premises of a former Nazi concentration and death camp. The article also attempts to determine whether and to what extent a visit to a place of memory is an important experience in the lives of young people, and what makes the biggest impression on the visitor. This article is divided into three parts. In the first one I shortly present the beginnings of the State Museum at Majdanek and in what way the narration about the former camp at Museum has been changing. In the second part I mention the educational role which the place of memory may play. The article does not engage in the debate about the educational strategies and pedagogical practices. Although the subject is described and available in the literature in the field, but this issue is beyond the scope of my article. The last part of this paper presents the results of surveys conducted among students visiting the State Museum at Majdanek.

    Opis:
    Already 851 sites representing exceptional universal merits have found themselves on the UNESCO World Heritage List, created upon the basis of the 1972 UNESCO convention on the protection of the world cultural and natural heritage. The decision-making body within the convention is the Committee. The 31st session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee was held on 23 June-2 July 2007 in Christchurch (New Zealand). More than 800 representatives of 184 convention member states, state institutions and NGOs attended the meeting. The Committee decided to add to the UNESCO World Heritage List 22 new sites. It also made an unprecedented decision to strike from the list the Arabian Oryx Sanctuary in Oman, due to a reduction of the terrain and the falling number of the antelopes. The most important decision concerning world heritage sites in Poland pertained to the changed name of the Auschwitz Concentration Camp. According to the proposal made by the Committee the new name is now composed of two parts, the main component being: “Auschwitz Birkenau”, followed by a description: ”German Nazi concentration and death camp (1940-1945)”. The Committee also accepted a pronouncement of the site’s significance – a document describing the site and justifying its inclusion on the List within the context of selected criteria. All the sites are obligated to prepare a pronouncement defining their exceptional and universal merits. The purpose of this duty and the explanation of the limits of the entry are to introduce order into the UNESCO World Heritage List and to draw attention to the state of the preservation of particular sites. Those activities were inaugurated within the framework of the Regular Report in 2003-2006. The 32nd session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee will take place in Quebec (Canada) on 2-10 July 2008.

    The article focuses on death zones in concentration camps and those that in themselves were purely death camps. In 1944–1945, in the concentration camp system, these places were spaces of dying, where emaciated and sick prisoners were locked away, thus condemning them to death. Although mass murders were also committed in these places, the majority of the inmates died due to the inaction of camp personnel, who out of their passivity made yet another way of killing prisoners deemed “useless”. The first section of the paper presents the findings of historians, and strives to show on their basis when and why death camps and death zones appeared, how they functioned, and where they were located. In the second part the focus is on a specific death zone: the Little Camp at Buchenwald. This fragment of the article gives the floor above all to former prisoners of this place, as well as inmates of the main camp at Buchenwald who were able to observe from behind the barbed wire the fate of those consigned to the Little Camp.
