Opis:: The article is devoted to the problem of modern masculinities considered as a set of dominant and alternative images of men, ways of behaviour or identity strategies. Their sources can be tracked to the 19th century, the time when – according to many researchers – the modern masculinity was constituted. Connell’s claims about the “hegemonic masculinity” (and also Bourdieu’s concept of the “male domination”) are treated as a starting point. Moreover, the article presents factors that influenced initiation of the new type of man (the Renaissance culture, modern philosophy, the development of empires, large-scale wars, class society and capitalism etc.) and describes such categories as: male honour, the figure of a gentleman and a dandy, male beauty canons and androgynous masculinity.

Opis:: This paper describes the self-portraits of Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz (1885-1939) who was a painter, writer, philosopher, theoretician, and critic. The author has selected twelve most interesting works, analysed them and interpreted in the context of the whole literary, philosophical, and epistolographic output of the artist, including his biography. The text is supplemented by coloured oil reproductions, pastels, and drawings. They are described in detail in a chronological order. All the elements of Witkacy's works become meaningful, starting from typically historical and artificial: representations, views, colours, techniques, and signatures or the author's title. This paper is based on a master's thesis and it contains also some remarks concerning the whole collection of self-portraits. The author sought to show Witkacy's self-portraits. Witkacy was a professional portrait painter in the perspective of dandy painting. Now drawing on the studies written by historians of art and literature, she sought to indicate how useful are the categories used in literature or journalism for painting. Dandy painting is a key of interpretation that helps to explain not only why the author of A Farewell to Autumn was so eager to paint his physiognomy (there are eighty-two self-portraits), but also the varied character of the collection of self-portraits. We may find among them representative portraits painted with care, and some sketches drawn in haste under the influence of drugs, or self-caricatures attached to correspondence.

Opis:: W artykule – głównie w odniesieniu do listów powstałych na przestrzeni emigracyjnej twórczości Juliusza Słowackiego – ukazane zostały zależności między garderobą poety, a jego egzystencjalnym, duchowym i twórczym progresem. Poszczególne cezury rozwoju przybliżają wizerunki poety-dandysa, żywego trupa w czarnym tużurku, wojażera realizującego podróż życia oraz mistyka porzucającego świat „glansowanych rękawiczek”. W kontekście zaprezentowanego wywodu pojawia się również wątek Mickiewiczowski – antynomiczny wobec prezentowanej myśli Słowackiego o stroju traktowanym w kategorii człowieczego „ja”.
The article, mainly based on letters written during Juliusz Słowacki’s exile, shows the relationship between the poet’s clothes and his existential, spiritual and creative progress. The various caesuras of his development bring out the images of a dandy poet, a living corpse in a black trench coat, a voyager realizing the journey of a lifetime, and a mystic abandoning the world of “glanced gloves”. In the context of the presented argument, there is also a Mickiewiczian theme, as an antinomy to Słowacki’s thought presented on clothing treated in the category of the human self.

Opis:: Paper deals with a conception of Antun Gustav Matoš authorship, regarding his own definition of his life as a work of art. Performing his authorship in a variety of literary texts, letters and notices, he lived in extremes, being flaneur, dandy and a bohem, world traveler and a nationalist ideologist, what influenced reception of his work until recent period. Critical and historiographic, as much as other literary works related to AGM follow this „author-centered” positions regarding his life as a work of art, as much as his literary texts as a reflection of his life. Latest Croatian „Matosiana” book, Dubravka Oraić Tolić̕ Reading Matoš (Čitanja Matoša, 2013), attests some traditional critical assumptions regarding authorship of this canonical writer end expands them in a new context. Different theories of literary canon formation, especially those grounded on feminist or psychoanalytical approach, call in question usual strategies in creation and understanding AGMs authorship, aestheticism and anti-modernism.

Opis:: Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881) nie stronił od kobiet, chociaż fascynowały go męskie przyjaźnie. Zdaniem niektórych biografów, może to wskazywać na homoerotyczny element jego osobowości. Do jego najbliższych przyjaciół należeli głośni dandysi okresu Regencji – pisarz Edward Bulwer-Lytton i artysta amator hrabia Alfred d’Orsay. Disraeli miał kilka romansów z mężatkami, ale po ślubie z bogatą wdową stał się kochającym i wiernym małżonkiem. Mimo pokaźnego majątku żony, miał problemy finansowe, które w końcu udało mu się rozwiązać dzięki pieniądzom, które hojnie zapisała mu tajemnicza dama z Kornwalii. Spośród wszystkich kobiet, które poznał Disraeli, królowa Wiktoria zajmowała szczególne i wyjątkowe miejsce. Królowa ceniła jego lojalność i poświęcenie oraz uwielbiała jego pochlebstwa.
In his youth, Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881) did not shy away from women, although he was fascinated by male friendships, which – as suggest some biographers – could point to the homoerotic element of his personality. His closest friends included two prominent dandies of the Regency era – the writer Edward Bulwer-Lytton and the amateur artist Count Alfred d’Orsay. His non-English appearance, exceptional intelligence and dandy’s fame attracted the attention of many London ladies. Disraeli had several affairs with married women, but after his marriage with a widow of large fortune, he became a loving and faithful husband. Despite his wife’s considerable wealth, Disraeli continued to have serious financial problems, which he finally resolved thanks to the money bequeathed to him by the mysterious lady from Cornwall. Of all the women who Disraeli met, Queen Victoria occupied a special and unique place. She appreciated his loyalty and dedication and adored his flattery.
