Arming and disarming. Metaphorical expressions in political discourseAccording to Cognitive Metaphor Theory, metaphorical expressions are considered to be a projection of a clearer and more easily comprehensible cognitive structure on a more abstract or complicated target domain. In other words, metaphorical expressions explain complicated and more abstract notions in terms of easier and less abstract phenomena. However, the choice of a source and a target domain often imposes a certain point of view and sanctions specific interpretations. This characteristic of metaphorical expressions makes them an extremely useful device for political persuasion. Since the emergence of Cognitive Metaphor Theory there has been a growing number of research focused on the relations between figurative language, power and ideology. This paper focuses on processes of arming and disarming metaphorical expressions in political discourse. The author outlines basic tenets of Cognitive Metaphor Theory, as well as some of its implications on the relations between figurative language, persuasion and ideology. This paper gives also a very concise overview of previous research on arming and disarming metaphorical expressions by Teresa Dobrzyńska [1994] and a study on metaphorical expressions and ideology by Michael Billig and Katie Macmillan [2005].

The author of this paper begins with showing the role played by covers today (a cover as a marketing tool used by a publisher, as a paratext presenting a publication and encouraging people to read it, and as a “commercial interpretation” of a text) and demonstrates that they are a special place where the intentions of the author of a text, the needs of its publisher, and the expectations of readers clash. She chooses the following specific issue as the object of her investigation: book metaphors used in paratexts of popular scientific studies. It has not been examined from this angle before. By analysing the metaphors used by publishers, she shows that they are strategies of attracting readers. The author focuses on the aspects of metaphors that allow publishers to achieve the objectives of not only typical covers but also ones imposed on popularisation of science. Analyses indicate that metaphors are applied mainly to stimulate the readers’ minds, to engage them emotionally, and to open them to the cognitive values brought by scientific knowledge.

The analysis focuses on the Polish scientific discourse of the George Lako ’s and Mark Johnson‘s theory. The author wonders whether two Polish terms “cognitive metaphor” and “conceptual meta- phor” can be guided by the same principles in the examined discourse. At the outset of the text, a quantitative survey took place, followed by qualitative ones: the first aimed to identify the key words and examine in which contexts they occur, the second attempted to verify whether both described terms are similarly conceptualized or not. It appears that additional review of the methods of pro ling the analyzed terms de nitely confirms the identified correlation. Namely: the way of naming one phenomenon depends on the text and the context (Polish and original) of the discourse, which the researchers refer to.

This article describes the usage and occurrence of metaphorical phraseologisms and their functions in non-scientific medical articles. According to Harald Weinrich’s theory [1976] and cognitive theory of metaphors by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson [1980], metaphorical phraseologisms, as well as single metaphors can be associated with subordinate concepts. Due to high complicity of metaphors described in this article they appear in the form of constellations and have been arranged according to such concepts as: MEDICINE IS A GAME, ILLNESS IS AN ENEMY AND THERAPY IS A STRUGGLE and also SICKNESS AND LEADING TO SICKNESS IS A CRIME.

Inspired by Strugielska’s (2012) article “Alternate Construals of Source and Target Domains in Conceptual Metaphor,” where the linguist presents a number of arguments questioning applicability of Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) to the analysis of linguistic meaning, I attempt to reanalyze some of the arguments through reference to primary sources: Lakoff and Johnson (1980), Lakoff (1990), Kövecses (2000, 2002, 2005, 2011). The issues of direct concern are: dichotomous nature of conceptual domains and their assumed discretness, the issue of differentiating the conceptual structure form the semantic structure and cognitive metaphorical projections from the relation of categorization, the question of monosemy constraint and degree of informativeness of metaphorical projections. The issues are discussed in the source article in the context of works whose authors question validity of CMT on the basis of (naturally occurring) language data from corpora. My own reanalysis of the examples discussed exhibit the extent to which metaphorical projections between the source and the target domains can provide motivations for the language expressions, accounting for their metaphoricity. At the same time, employing analytic tools available within Cognitive Grammar, I demonstrate that the extent of the contribution of metaphorical projections to respective semantic structures is determined by the position of the source domain in the matrix of the respective profile/base alignment.

The problematic gap between legal and social norms exists in copyright law. The consequences of this gap are severe and include: not following copyright rules, and a big conflict between artists and recipients of a culture. In this context, copyright piracy is prevalent in Poland and legal tools aimed to protect interests of artists have failed. Copyright law might have been in sync with analogue era, but not to digital world. Identification of roots of the discrepancy between social expectations and legally binding rules might be the first step toward rectifying of situation. This article demonstrates the conceptual metaphors as a possible reason for malfunctioning the copyright law. Some metaphors treat intangible objects as tangible ones (intellectual or artistic work) and might pose difficulties mentioned above. Additionally, Larsson defined a group of metaphors in legal system. Bound with them are metaphors outside of law. For example, if law treats intellectual property as tangible property, than metaphors outside the copyright legal system, such as piracy apply. Polish copyright law in the context of Lakoff – Johnson theory of metaphors is a framework of the study.

The article presents conclusions from a semantic analysis of a set of linguistic expressions belonging to units selected in the project “Word of the day”, meaning words with the highest relative turnover in particular days of 2017. This collection includes language expressions related to the notion of danger and insecurity. The study is a proposal to look at this group of linguistic expressions from a cognitive perspective, which allows to capture certain common features in the way of perceiving and depicting elements of reality described by them. Referring, inter alia, the cognitive theory of conceptual metaphors and terms, such as profiling, presents some common elements present in the structure of the meaning of the majority of analyzed lexical units. In this way, an attempt was made to reconstruct imaginary patterns a ecting the way of presenting various kinds of threats in press releases.

Quantifiers and existentials as markers of affirmation in SerbianIn the paper I argue that quantifiers understood as numerical language expressions and the verb ‘to be’ are used to express and intensify affirmation in Serbian and other Slavic languages. I focus on two types of quantifiers: the universal quantifier, represented in Serbian by the lexeme svi and its derivatives, and the existential quantifier associated with the numeral jedan and the verb ‘to be’. Both types of quantifiers in analyzed contexts acquire secondary functions of affirmation markers. However, the scope of this type of affirmation marking is quite limited as very often the same words may be used in negative contexts. As a consequence, it is impossible to describe this function referring to any strict logical rules, but it is better to regard it as a metaphorical extension. Thus, the use of universal quantifier as a marker or intensifier of affirmation is believed to be best described as being based on the conceptual metaphor AFFIRMATION IS COMPLETENESS and the intensification of affirmation in the case of existential quantifier and the verb ‘to be’ relies on the metaphor AFFIRMATION IS EXISTENCE.

The cognitive function of language is manifested, among others, in the inseparable processes of conceptualization and categorization of the world. The present study attempts to demonstrate that in the process of language development multiple expressions have been coined to characterize the ultimate experiences of dying and death, which symbolize different ways of thinking about the phenomena. The possibility to identify conceptual metaphors and metonymies in language allows, as it seems, to become familiar with the human experience. The comparison of the two languages shows the convergence in the conceptualization of the process and state scenarios. Both languages have at their disposal corresponding phraseological categories, which profile similar domains, and which conceptualize the phenomena in a parallel way.
Kognitywna funkcja języka przejawia się m.in. w nierozdzielnych procesach konceptualizowania i kategoryzowania świata. Niniejsze opracowanie jest próbą pokazania, że dla charakterystyki spraw ostatecznych – umierania i śmierci – zostało utworzonych na przestrzeni rozwoju języków wiele wyrażeń, które symbolizują sposoby myślenia o tych zjawiskach. Możliwość wysnucia metafor i metonimii pojęciowych na podstawie funkcjonowania języka pozwala, jak się wydaje, poznać ludzkie doświadczenie. Porównanie obu języków pokazuje zbieżność odzwierciedlania pewnego scenariusza tych zjawisk. Języki te najczęściej dysponują odpowiadającymi sobie kategoriami frazeologicznymi, które profilują zbieżne domeny, więc odzwierciedlają bliskie sobie sposoby konceptualizowania danego zjawiska.

The main aim of this paper is to answer the question which appears in its title. In order to do so, I analyse the mind style of the eponymous character from Boris Akunin’s book The Decorator (1999). The notion of mind style coined by Roger Fowler relates to a unique correlation between certain linguistic constructions (metaphors, transitive patterns, underlexicalization) and their role in projecting particular world-views. The analysis shows that in the case of Akunin’s hero, who is inspired by the legendary Jack the Ripper, it is metaphors that serve the function of “consistent structural options”. They demonstrate how the murderer conceptualizes and interprets such concepts as MURDER, MURDERER, BODY and BEAUTY.

Translation-wise, the article draws attention to what may connect different but related cultures. It refers to the basic assumptions of cognitive grammar of Ronald W. Langacker and the idea of the conceptual metaphor of George Lakoff and Mark Johnson, which have been applied in the theory and practice of translation by Elżbieta Tabakowska. Tertium comparationis of the comparison of translation series with the title poem of Wisława Szymborska is constituted by the metaphor of life. The said comparison reveals the unification of conceptualization of this abstract and universal category. The translation, thus, brings closer to the target culture a fragment of the array of notions applied by the Nobel laureate reflected in the original.
Na przykładzie przekładu artykuł zwraca uwagę na to, co może łączyć różne, lecz pokrewne kultury. Odwołuje się do podstawowych założeń gramatyki kognitywnej Ronalda W. Langackera oraz koncepcji metafory pojęciowej George’a Lakoffa i Marka Johnsona, które w teorii i praktyce przekładu zastosowała Elżbieta Tabakowska. Tertium comparationis porównania serii przekładowej z tytułowym wierszem Wisławy Szymborskiej stanowi metafora życia. Porównanie odkrywa wspólnotę konceptualizacji tej abstrakcyjnej i uniwersalnej kategorii. Przekład przybliża swej kulturze odzwierciedlony w oryginale fragment świata pojęć Noblistki.

Celem artykułu jest wykazanie, że kognitywne metodologie językoznawcze mogą stanowić podstawę analiz dzieł literackich i poetyckich. Próbuję w pełni zinterpretować „Zatrute drzewo” napisane przez Williama Blake’a. Analiza opiera się na założeniach Teorii Metafory Pojęciowej. Odwołuję się także do poznawczej koncepcji emocji (Lakoff, Kövecses, Johnson). Wspomniano także o modelu kategoryzacji Rosha. Za Langackerem zakładałam, że znaczenia językowe mają charakter indywidualny i zależą od doświadczeń autora.
The aim of the article is to demonstrate that cognitive linguistic methodologies can provide a basis for analyses of literary and poetical works. I attempt to fully interpret A Poison Tree written by William Blake. The analysis is based on the beliefs of the Theory of Conceptual Metaphor. I also refer to cognitive conception of emotions (Lakoff, Kӧvecses, Johnson). Rosh’s model of categorization has also been mentioned. I assumed, among others, after Langacker that linguistic meanings are individual in character and dependent on the author’s experiences.

W artykule przeprowadzono analizy i interpretacje artystycznych plakatów teatralnych J. Czerniawskiego. Celem tych działań badawczych była weryfikacja założenia, że multimodalne metafory mają charakter konceptualny, sprawdzenie przystawalności szczegółowych założeń teorii metafor pojęciowych G. Lakoffa i M. Johnsona do analiz artystycznych komunikatów wielokodowych oraz konfrontacja tejże teorii z koncepcją metafor multimodalnych C. Forceville’a. Celem szczegółowym była natomiast próba autorskiego zdefiniowania metafor multimodalnych. Badacz stawia hipotezę, którą weryfikuje działaniami analitycznymi, że w procesie dekodowania znaczeń plakatu obrazy są odczytywane w połączeniu ze słowami – tytułami przedstawień, a odbiór wielokodowego przekazu to mentalna (rozgrywająca się w umyśle odbiorcy) negocjacja sensów wielopoziomowych metafor, w których analogie językowe i obrazowe wynikają nie tylko ze znaczeń definicyjnych, ale też z cech konotacyjnych znaków werbalnych i pozawerbalnych. Tekst sytuuje się w obszarze interdyscyplinarnych kognitywnych badań nad dyskursem artystycznym.
The paper analyses and interprets J. Czerniawski’s artistic theatre posters. The aim of the research was to verify the assumption that multimodal metaphors are conceptual in their nature, to check how the detailed assumptions of G. Lakoff’s and M. Johnson’s conceptual metaphor theory match the analyses of artistic multimodal messages, and to confront this theory with C. Forceville’s concept of multimodal metaphors. The specific goal was to attempt to define multimodal metaphors in an original way. The researcher puts forward a hypothesis, subsequently verified with analyses, that in the process of decoding the meanings of a poster, the images are read in conjunction with the words – titles of the performances, while the reception of the multi code message constitutes mental negotiation (taking place in the recipient’s mind) of the meanings of multi level metaphors, in which language and image analogies result not only from their defined meanings, but also from the connotative features of verbal and non verbal signs. The text fits within the framework of interdisciplinary cognitive research on artistic discourse.

Opis:
T he present paper examines the issue of conceptual metaphors related to proper names. According to the Lakoff/Johnson’s theory, two types of metaphor are sustained – orientational metaphors and ontological metaphors. The author shows how proper names may be a part of source domains, as well as how they function within the new metaphorical expressions. Some examples from the Polish lexicon are discussed, e.g. the names of Himalaya, Mount Everest, Marian Ditch, Waterloo and the like. Some conceptual metaphors, such as the figuration of the state as a human being, and other sub-metaphors which can be derived from this, are also examined. Proper names may function within the metaphorical expressions due to their specificity, and because their denotata are closer to the human experience.
