Opis:
The paper describes the Polish adaptation of The Childbearing Questionnaire (CBQ), authored by Warren Miller. The questionnaire measures positive and negative motives for parenthood: general dispositions to react favorably or unfavorably to various aspects of childbearing. We present the theoretical framework of the questionnaire, its content and the process of its adaptation to the Polish cultural setting. Reliability and validity of the Polish version of the CBQ were established in the pilot study on a sample of 203 childless men and women, aged 20-40. We assessed the internal consistency of the subscales and performed exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis to verify the assumed structure of the questionnaire. We applied Structural Equation Modeling to confirm the theoretically expected relations between childbearing motives, desires and intentions. The results document good psychometric properties of the questionnaire, although some suggestions for enhancements and more in-depth studies are also formulated.

Opis:
The paper presents results of estimation of Cox proportional hazard model developed in order to identify the importance of employment for a first and a second childbirth for Polish women born in 1960 and after. The analysis is based on data from the first wave of the Generations and Gender Survey GGS-PL. The results show: a) positive and statistically significant effect of employment on the risk of having a first and a second child, b) negative, although weak impact of the length of statutory maternity leave on the risk of having a second child. The results cast in doubt the effectiveness of the new reform that introduces the possibility of taking longer maternity leaves in order to boost fertility.

Opis:
Given the scale and pace of post-EU accession migrations from Poland, as well as age and gender structure of their participants, an increased interest in family behaviour and intentions of this group has been recently noted. The observed interrelations between migration and family building processes are multidimensional. Thus, this study aims to investigate interrelations between migration, childbearing decisions and intentions of Polish female migrants in Norway. The paper is based on a survey research conducted among Polish female migrants in 2014–2015. The results show that majority of immigrants was childless upon arrival. For those, who had a child before migration, the mobility occurred in a relatively early stage of family formation process. However, a concentration of births shortly after migration can be observed. This concerns mostly women migrating to join their husbands or partners. An opposite evidence is observed regarding respondents who had one child upon arrival to Norway – only few of them proceeded to the second birth. Almost 58% of respondents wants to give birth to their next child in Norway. More importantly, majority of women planning a long-term stay in Norway still has positive or uncertain childbearing intentions.

Opis:
Even though survey studies recurrently show that Poles want to have children and that parenthood is important to them, more and more Polish women remain childless. This discrepancy calls for a closer consideration. We need to understand a nature of childbearing desires and intentions much better and investigate obstacles which might prevent women from fulfilling them. In this paper, I analyse 20 in-depth semi-structured interviews with childless women aged 37–46. The qualitative methodology is applied to explore what preferences, circumstances and life-choices of the respondents have led them to childlessness. The respondents discussed several factors: A lack of a partner, fecundity problems, postponement of childbearing related to employment or life priorities other than family and childbearing. However, the results show that it is rarely possible to find a single reason for remaining childless, as various factors collide and interact in women’s lives.

Opis:
Trends in daily cigarette smoking among women at childbearing age, Poland 1974–2004This paper analyzes changes in daily smoking among Polish women at childbearing age (15–49). The analysis is based on nation-wide  randomized surveys of adult Polish population (aged 15+) from 1974–2004. Study results show rapid increase of daily smoking rates in women at childbearing age from around 22% to 39% between 1974 and 1982. Since then, daily smoking has constantly decreased in this population (to around 30% in 2000–2004). The analysis also showed that in 1974 daily smoking rates in high educated women were much higher (20%) than in low educated women (13%). Today, the highest rates of daily smoking are observed in low educated women (32%) and the  lowest in high educated women (21%). It was caused by biggest decline in daily smoking in higher educated women as compared with lower educated women. Above changes create new challenges in tobacco control and require new strategy in smoking prevention programs addressed to women population.

Opis:
Since 1950s, the non-marital birth rate has been relatively high in the northern and western Poland, and relatively low in the south of the country. A remarkable increase in the percentage of non-marital births, observed after 1989 and especially in the recent decade did not change this spatial pattern. This article aims to quantify the spatial differentiation of the non-marital birth rate in recent years, between 2002 and 2010. It also attempts to verify three hypotheses, which try to explain the reasons behind the spatial pattern of non-marital childbearing from three different perspectives: the opportunity cost theory, the theory of anomie and historical trauma, and the theory of social influence. The analyses have been conducted on the NUTS-4 level (the Polish powiats) using the standard OLS regression models and the spatial autoregressive models: the spatial lag models and the spatial error models. The results of the multiple models suggest that the spatial pattern of non-marital childbearing can be attributed to social influence and historical trauma rather than to opportunity cost. However, the conclusions are tentative. The subject needs further studies.

Children, women of childbearing age, and pregnant women are three groups of patients that require special attention during X-ray diagnosis. The concept of radiation safety in women of childbearing age includes the reduction doses of ovaries, the exclusion of pregnancy as well as performing the planned examinations in the abdominal cavity and pelvis in the first days of the menstrual cycle. The aim of the study was to assess the knowledge of female patients of childbearing age about the topic of radiation exposure of the fetus in plane radiography.
