Opis:
Modern chancery of case records is run using the chancery system based on registering particular cases. This system is built on three important chancery-archive norms, which include chancery instructions, a uniform list of records (which is often the annex to chancery instructions) and archival instructions. Without these regulations the smooth functioning of a modern chancery and an institutional archive (records repository) is almost impossible. Chancery instructions are the ones which play an important role, as their primary function is to establish the rules and procedures for performing chancery tasks in the institution and to standardize the handling of documentation produced by the institution. The proper design of this normative undoubtedly improves the functioning of institutions, optimizes document management processes, contributes to rationalization and improvement of documents flow within the organization, and streamlines and accelerates the process of performing things. This norm is also needed in higher education, especially at universities. Chancery of the university (understood as a whole organizational unit performing formal and substantive chancery tasks), due to extensive structure of such an institution, is heavily fragmented. It is a legal requirement to have properly constructed chancery instructions (but also other norms) in the case of state universities. In the case of the Catholic University of Lublin John Paul II there is no legal coercion, but certainly the advantages of using these norms were the basis for its introduction by the Rector of the Catholic University 21 December 2001. The article presents the comparison of the introduced chancery instructions  with similar norms in two Polish universities, namely Maria Curie-Skłodowska University, and the University of Silesia. The most important finding of this comparison is recognition of the necessity of issuing new chancery regulations at the Catholic University of Lublin.

Opis:
The keeping of the scriptorium and chancery by the first Polish Paulines dates back to the first half of the 15th century. It was mainly focused on copying liturgical and related books used for pastoral purposes, legal documentation and history, which included among others the history of the image of Our Lady (Translacio tabule) and the Chronicle of Wincenty Kadłubek. In the 16th century the scriptorium of Jasna Góra undertook the documentation of religious life in the sanctuary, including the first reports of pilgrims and records of confreres, as a response to the attacks of the Reformation. At the same time the scriptorium created the first cartularies and other books containing legal processes, inventories, as well as library and account records. The development process of the chancery has reached its peak in the early 17th century, when Fr. Mikołaj Staszewski (1595-1658), a former employee of the Curia of Poznań, later Provincial and General of the Pauline Order, entered the Board of the Order and introduced a new style of copying files. He also initiated the process of writing Pauline chronicles – first of the Polish Province and then of the whole Order, and introduced relevant secretarial standards to the religious constitution, of which he was the main inspirer and contractor. Currently the Polish Pauline Archives store 71 medieval manuscripts from Polish scriptoria, and more than 40 cartulary books from the modern era, among which only one Formulare obedientiarum salutationum et epistolarum variarum of Dionizy Klękowski (1599-1675) contains 1053 copies of various documents and correspondence from the period 1367-1673.

Opis:
The documents registered in the Polish Crown Chancery books (Metrica Regni) are used in combination with other sources in works on the history of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. In this article the approach is different – the analysis is focused on the Crown Chancery documents only. The questions are; how many of the documents, registered in the short period 1587–1591, described the situation in Livland and Kurland (i.e. today Latvia)? What are the main topics of this acts? How was the situation in Livland seen by the chancery clerks and if their view is supported by the modern historiography? The answer is surprisingly positive. About 10% of all registered documents concern Livland and we do get a differentiated view on the subject. This newly acquired province was a place of many quarrels and fights. The officers from Poland and Lithuania had to organize the administration and to placate the old nobility and burghers. The religious differences did not make this task easy, since the king Sigismund Vasa would like to renovate the structures of the Roman Catholic church in Livland. Most of the documents are testimonies of some grants; to the Polish – Lithuanian gentry, to the old Livonian gentry, even to some burghers, who supported the Commonwealth in the struggle with Moscovia. We can conclude that acts registered in the Polish Metrica do correspond accurately with the view on Livland represented by the modern historiography, although the texts are quite laconic and only rarely we can see a continuation of a case in next documents.

The research undertaken in the article is put in the context of the social, administrative and economic transformations undergone by Chełmno (Kulm), which had been a bishop’s town since 1505. These changes also had a significant impact on the organisation of the town’s chancery, which carried out tasks and duties entrusted by municipal authorities. This was reflected in an increase in the number of town officials working in the chancery, to which court secretaries belonged. They formed a professional group, which was characterised by their economic, political and cultural activity against the background of Chełmno community in the early modern period. The main research objective of the article is to create a comprehensive picture of the social environment of Chełmno town chancery from the sixteenth century until 1772, the personnel of which constituted the intellectual elite of the town, and to present the characteristic traits of this group. At the same time, the text presents the profiles of town secretaries and clerks previously unknown or rarely mentioned in the scholarly literature. Methods applied in the research involve critical analysis of the preserved town books and individual documents, both manuscript and edited. On the basis of data collected from the primary sources, a prosopographical analysis has also been conducted. The result of the studies is an overview picture of the professional group formed by the secretaries and clerks of early modern Chełmno, which includes their social origins, family ties, non-professional activity and wealth.

Opis:
The present article is meant to support the idea of the research methodological concept that underlies a diachronic approach to the study of the Polish language in the aim of providing appropriate methodological and practical tools for analyzing language change and the one that would include historical Polish language in the general study on the language. This, in turn, would create foundations for a better understanding of the linguistic phenomena occurring in more recent times. For the linguistic analyses, some sections of the archival municipal records of the city of Poznan have been selected: the inventories of Poznan’s burghers, whereas the longer passages have been excerpted from the local municipal records of the provincial court of justice, i.e., the records of civil litigation of the town’s board of aldermen. The source material, apart from being undoubtedly helpful in onomastic research, provides additionally an opportunity to learn more about the economic standing of the inhabitants, their professions and occupations and the related social standing. Thus obtained data make it possible to verify and, sometimes, reassess conclusions on thesocial stratification of the local townsfolk, the hierarchy in professions and, in addition, provide grounds for a reliable comparison of the degree and the growth rate in economic improvement between the burghers in Greater Poland and those of other towns and cities in Poland similar in size and importance. On the basis of the resulting lexical and semantic analyses one can conclude that townspeople from Greater Poland of the time were fairly well-off and enjoyed wealth in terms of having an abundance of material and worldly things. The contemporary measure of wealth was everyday consumer goods that featured household linen, table linen and clothing. Household items, such as kitchenware, tableware, bathroom accessories, goods for own use were also considered valuable. In addition, townspeople had also jewelry, real property or money, but these did not constitute any major determinant factors in determining a particular position in the hierarchy of social standing.

Since mid-17th century a new practice can be observed, concerning ornamentation of title pages of the books of inscription of the Crown. Two such ornamented sheets remain from the time when Jerzy Ossoliński held the office of the chancellor. The extant sheets complement the Chancellor’s political agenda, presented in his thanksgiving speeches, delivered upon receiving the seal. This is an example of using the crown chancery to promote political ideas. Additionally, this practice is aligned with the belief that the image is inextricably linked with the text; at the same time, it is a manifestation of Ossoliński’s ambition and hubris

The article addresses the hitherto unknown notaries of Chełmno in the context of the development of the city’s chancery from the 14th to the 16th centuries. On the basis of the thorough analysis of the sources – the city’s books (The judicial book of the city of Chełmno of the years 1330–1430, books of town councilors, accounting books) documents (recorded in the books and included in diplomatic codices) twelve notaries appearing in the sources as early as the first half of the 14th century have been identified. The author concentrated on the hitherto unknown notaries such as Nicolaus Konin (1328), Iohannes (1333) or ; eodricus (1360–1370). The best known head of the city’s chancery in Chełmno is Konrad Bitschin (he held the o¢ ce of the notary in the years 1430–1438) described by both German and Polish historians. The article shows the notary’s contribution in the organization and reform of the chancery indicating at the same time his achievements in other fields. The range of the notary’s work in the chancery is described by the extracts of the manuscript by Konrad Bitschin cited by the German historian Franz Schultz - „Manuale notarii civitatis Culmen”, where the city’s books established by him were recorded. The comparison of the condition of the city’s archive before Konrad Bitschin’s term of office with the list of new volumes gives us a picture of intensive works, the aim of which was to order the archive and to make the work of the Chełmno chancery more effective. Indicating the successors of Konrad Bitschin – Jacob Schoensee or Andreas Zommer – the author underlined the change in the way of running the chancery and much worse aptitude of the subsequent notaries, which was reflected in a much less accurate manner to keep the books. Apart from the description of the individual heads of the city’s chancery, the article addresses the nature of the work of the chancery, the most important duties of notaries, their remuneration and education.

Opis:
The discussion article provides an analysis of a book recently published by Wojciech Krawczuk entitled Records and Regesta of the German Expedition of the Royal Swedish Chancery of King Sigismund III of the Years 1597–1600. The book contains a source edition of the minutes of the royal chancery of Sigismund III Vasa, King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania (1587–1632), and King of Sweden (he retained power in 1592–1599), written around 1600, which has been supplemented by extensive regesta prepared by the editor. This discussion article evaluates this form of providing access to the contents of primary sources against the background of similar source editions consisting of records created by other royal chanceries, namely the chancery of the Kingdom of Poland, the chancery of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the chancery of the dukes of Mazovia. It is noteworthy that increasingly more archival materials are made available online through the websites of various archives and other institutions that preserve historical documents. In view of the growing trend to digitalize primary sources and make them available online, the idea of publishing complete source editions including full source texts, which began at the beginning of the twentieth century, seems unjustified nowadays. Currently, the solution proposed by Wojciech Krawczuk, based on the publication of regesta, appears to be the most favourable. Perhaps it would be appropriate to link the published regesta even more closely to the digitized archival materials by providing each one of them with a link or QR code that would refer to the website hosting the relevant digitalized source. The content of the documents included in the reviewed book differs significantly from the content of the records created by the chanceries of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Swedish documents are dominated by current affairs, primarily concerning military and diplomatic issues, and include much fewer normative acts, such as appointments to offices and bestowals of landed property.

The paper presents preliminary results of research on the crown chancery of Ladislaus IV Vasa based on 12 books of inscription of the Crown Metrica (Metrica Regni), which reflect one particular aspect of the chancery’s work, namely recording the acts issued by the Office of the King. The offices of chancellor and deputy chancellor were held consecutively by six persons, most prominently by J. Zadzik, P. Gembicki, and J. Ossoliński. The chanceries had retained their modus operandi since the reign of Sigismund III. Every new deputy chancellor took staff members over from the departing chancellor. With time, small groups of royal secretaries in the chanceries grew in importance, the volume of recorded documents decreased, and more documents were made in Polish (14%) as compared to the dominant Latin. Anyway, throughout the reign of Ladislaus IV the chancery created a total of 70000 documents, being most active during the Diet’s sessions
