    W zasobie Archiwum Archidiecezjalnego w Gnieźnie znajduje się pokaźny zbiór starych druków, należących niegdyś do przedstawicieli wyższego oraz niższego duchowieństwa. W kontekście badań nad szeroko pojętą historią Kościoła źródła, którymi są stare druki, a w szczególności oprawy, mogą wydawać się nietrafionym kierunkiem. Jednak analiza bibliologiczna zachowanych księgozbiorów może okazać się wartościowym uzupełnieniem do badań nad dziejami Kościoła oraz duchowieństwa.W zespole Biblioteki Katedralnej do dziś zachowało się kilkanaście woluminów, które niegdyś tworzyły księgozbiór Benedykta Herbesta (zm. 1598), teologa, pedagoga i polemisty. Woluminy należące do poznańskiego kanonika, niemalże każdorazowo, zostały oznaczone superekslibrisem napisowym, który umieszczono na dolnej okładzinie oprawy. Zbiór ten charakteryzuje się jednolitym obleczeniem (ciemną skórą) oraz ich radełkową dekoracją ramową w stylu niemieckim. Niniejsza praca koncentruje się na analizie i charakterystyce opraw. Dzięki zastosowaniu analizy porównawczej wykorzystanych do powstania oprawy materiałów (desek, skóry) oraz użytych do dekoracji narzędzi możliwe będzie wskazanie ośrodka introligatorskiego, a nawet rzemieślnika odpowiedzialnego za wykonanie wspomnianych opraw.Głównym celem artykułu jest wyodrębnienie i wskazanie warsztatów introligatorskich, z których usług korzystał B. Herbest. Podjęto również próbę zidentyfikowania konkretnych introligatorów oraz scharakteryzowania tych dotąd nierozpoznanych przez badaczy dawnej książki w literaturze przedmiotu.
    The resources of the Gniezno Archdiocesan Archive include a sizeable collection of old prints that once belonged to representatives of the higher and lower clergy. In the context of researching the broader history of the Church, the sources, which are old prints and especially bindings, may seem like an ill-advised direction. However, bibliological analysis of the surviving book collections may prove to be a valuable addition to research on the history of the Church and the clergy.The Cathedral Library complex still contains a dozen or so volumes that once made up the book collection of Benedykt Herbest (d. 1598), a theologian, educator and polemicist. Volumes belonging to the Poznań canon were almost every time marked with a supralibros inscription, which was placed on the lower lining of the binding. This collection is characterized by uniform bookbinding material (dark leather) and their German-style roll-based frame decoration. This paper focuses on the analysis and characterization of the bindings. By using a comparative analysis of the materials used to create the bindings (boards, leather) and the tools used for decoration, it will be possible to identify the bookbinding centre and even the craftsman responsible for making the said bindings.The main purpose of the article is to distinguish and identify the bookbinding workshops whose services were utilised by B. Herbest. An attempt has also been made to identify specific bookbinders and to characterize those hitherto unrecognised by old book scholars in the literature.

    Niniejszy artykuł kładzie nacisk na problematykę opraw ksiąg, które znalazły się w kolekcji kanonika gnieźnieńskiego Stanisława Grota. Rozpoznany do tej pory fragment księgozbioru duchownego liczy 45 druków. Wszystkie omówione woluminy należą do zasobu Archiwum Archidiecezjalnego w Gnieźnie. Największą część biblioteki kanonika stanowią druki traktujące o prawie kanonicznym, świeckim oraz kazania. Oprawy tych druków w większości zostały wykonane z desek bądź tektury oraz jasnej skóry dodatkowo pokrytej dekoracjami. Z pewnością przeważają oprawy w typie niemieckiego renesansu o kompozycji ramowej. Sporą część tworzą również oprawy o wymowie kontrreformacyjnej, ozdobione plakietami z monogramem IHS. Jak wynika z badań nad znakami wodnymi, kanonik zaopatrywał się nie tylko u lokalnych introligatorów, ale też m.in. u rzemieślników z Małopolski.
    This article focuses on the issues concerning the bindings of books that formed the book collection of the Gniezno canon Stanisław Grot. The identified section of the collection that belonged to Grot amounts to forty five old prints. All volumes discussed in the article come from the Archdiocesan Archives in Gniezno. The bulk of the canon’s library comprises books on canon and secular law and on sermons. The bindings of these old prints are predominantly made of planks or cardboard and light vellum (hide) that had been additionally embellished with ornamentation. Undoubtedly, the bindings made according to the traditional craft of German Renaissance bookbinding and with a framework composition are in preponderance. A sizeable number of bindings feature clearly Counter-Reformation setting with religious symbolism that is clearly Counter Reformation in purpose and with the monograph IHS. As it has been revealed from the analysis of the watermarks, the canon used the binding services of not only local book binders, but also those from the Lesser Poland region.

    The article presents the book range of Samuel Jansson Möller, a bookseller operating in Toruń in the first half of the 18th century. The basis for its presentation was a book catalogue from 1738, included in the collection of the Cathedral Library in Gniezno. Jansson Möller became involved with Toruń around 1725, when he took position in a thriving bookstore of Jan Christian Laurer, which, after his employer’s death and at the request of the widow, was run by Möller until his own death around 1751 The catalogue contains nearly 1600 items, more than half of which were published in the 17th century, 35% came from the first decades of the 18th century and the rest were 16th century prints, which proves that the bookseller merchandised used books as well as new publications. In many respects, the analysed catalogue demonstrated that Jansson’s activity reflected that of his predecessor and another Toruń bookseller of that period, Jan Fryderyk Hauenstein. Over 20% of the books in his catalogue were polonica, including many publications in Polish. Although the ruling and intellectual elites of the city at that time were mainly Protestants, Jansson also addressed his offer to Catholics, which shows that the Catholic community had to show interest in books to a comparable extent to the Protestant one.
    W artykule zaprezentowana została oferta księgarska Samuela Janssona Möllera, księgarza działającego w Toruniu w pierwszej połowie XVIII wieku. Podstawą do jej przedstawienia był katalog księgarski z 1738 roku, znajdujący się w zbiorach Biblioteki Katedralnej w Gnieźnie. Jansson Möller związał się z Toruniem ok. 1725 roku, zatrudniając się w prężnie działającej księgarni Jana Chrystiana Laurera, po którego śmierci na prośbę wdowy prowadził ją dalej do ok. 1751 roku, kiedy zmarł. W katalogu zostało wykazanych prawie 1600 pozycji, z czego ponad połowa to książki wydane w XVII wieku, 35% pochodziło z pierwszych dekad XVIII stulecia, a pozostałe to druki XVI-wieczne, co dowodzi, że księgarz na równi z nowymi wydawnictwami handlował książką używaną. Pod wieloma względami analizowany katalog pokazywał, że Jansson działalnością nawiązywał do swego poprzednika i innego księgarza toruńskiego tego okresu, Jana Fryderyka Hauensteina. W katalogu ponad 20% książek stanowiły polonika, w tym sporo pozycji polskojęzycznych. Mimo że elity rządzące i intelektualne miasta to w tamtym czasie głównie protestanci, Jansson zwracał się ze swą ofertą także do katolików, co pokazuje, że społeczność katolicka musiała wykazywać zainteresowanie książkami w porównywalnym stopniu, co protestancka.

    The communique presents the binding of a printed book published in Cologne in 1568. The lower part of the cover vignette of the book is embellished with a bust of Sigismund August II of Poland embossed in the binding. It should be added at this point that the relevant literature of the subject includes a number of examples of bindings decorated with ornaments that might have been embossed by the same binding device.

    The article presents additional volumes found in the collections of the former Cathedral Library, formerly owned by the Canon of Gniezno Leonard Walkonowski, (around 1550-1617). The author pays special attention to the bindings of the volumes, trying to determine when and where they were made. On the other hand, thanks to a thorough analysis of the supralibros, it was possible to determine Walkonowski's affiliation with the Poraj family.

    Przedmiotem niniejszego artykułu jest przechowywany w Archiwum Archidiecezjalnym w Gnieźnie egzemplarz wydanego w 1537 roku Opusculum Quadragesimale Walentego Wróbla z dedykacją dla biskupa wileńskiego Pawła Holszańskiego, której istnienie podważył Stanisław Estreicher w Bibliografii polskiej Karola Estreichera. Nieznane wydanie tego dzieła odróżnia się jedynie częścią dedykacyjną od drugiego, znanego wydania, skierowanego do biskupa poznańskiego Jana z Książąt Litewskich. W związku z tym porównaniu obu listów dedykacyjnych poświęcona została najobszerniejsza część artykułu. Omawiany egzemplarz chroni oprawa wykonana w wileńskim warsztacie introligatorskim, który w latach 1557–1563 oprawiał także księgi z biblioteki Zygmunta Augusta. Wolumin krążył w środowisku zakon nym. Ostatnim potwierdzonym wpisem własnościowym posiadaczem dzieła był klasztor karmelitów trzewiczkowych w Bydgoszczy.
    The article discusses the copy of the 1537 Opusculum Quadragesimale by Walenty Wróbel (currently kept in the Archdiocese Archives in Gniezno) with a dedicatory inscription to Paweł Holszański, Bishop of Vilna, questioned by Stanisław Estreicher in Bibliografia polska by Karol Estreicher. The only difference between the unknown edition of this title and the well-known second edition is the dedicatory inscription dedicated to the Bishop of Poznań, John of the Lithuanian Dukes. Hence the main part of the article is devoted to a comparison of both dedicatory letters. The copy under scrutiny is bound in a binding made in a bindery in Vilna that, between the years 1557–1563, was also involved in providing its services to the royal library of Sigismund August. This particular volume was used by monks of different monasteries. The last attested proprietary inscription that the work bears is the one of the monastery of the monks of the Calced Carmelites in Bydgoszcz.

    The communique presents the Roman Missal, the book containing the prescribed prayers, chants, and instructions for the celebration of Mass in the Roman Catholic Church, from the Poznań-based monastery of Discalced Carmelites (Barefoot Carmelites) from the years 1685–1705 (1738). The missal is bound in a velvet binding with silver cornerpieces from the beginning of the eighteenth century and most probably produced in some local bindery.

    Przedmiotem artykułu są losy starodruku z zasobu Archiwum Archidiecezjalnego w Gnieźnie, zawierającego m.in. unikat polskojęzycznego poematu Walentego Roździeńskiego pt. Officina ferraria z 1612 roku. Ten druk współoprawny został podarowany gnieźnieńskiej bibliotece kapitulnej jako dar testamentalny ks. Antoniego Dyamenta w 1885 roku. Wartość naukową i historyczną druku odkrył przed II wojną światową bibliotekarz i archiwista kapitulny ks. kan. Leon Formanowicz, a zbadał go naukowo prof. Roman Pollak, który w 1936 roku przygotował jego edycję. Druk, w czasie wojny zabrany przez Niemców do Poznania, wrócił do prawowitego właściciela po wojnie i został ponownie zinwentaryzowany w 1955 roku. W tym też roku ks. dr Stanisław Bross, wikariusz kapitulny archidiecezji gnieźnieńskiej w czasie uwięzienia prymasa Stefana Wyszyńskiego, wypożyczył go bez powiadomienia kapituły metropolitalnej prof. Kornelowi Wesołowskiemu z Politechniki Warszawskiej. K. Wesołowski przetrzymywał druk do śmierci w 1977 roku, po czym wdowa po nim podarowała go Bibliotece Narodowej. Na przełomie lat 70. i 80. XX wieku kapituła prymasowska w Gnieźnie bezskutecznie starała się o zwrot cennej książki. Ostatnio, w 2017 roku, badał gnieźnieński druk w Warszawie obecny dyrektor Archiwum Archidiecezjalnego w Gnieźnie ks. Michał Sołomieniuk. W Bibliotece Katedralnej w Gnieźnie książka wciąż ma sygnaturę BK Pl 178.
    The subject of this article is the fate of an early printed book from the resources of the Archdiocesan Archives in Gniezno, which contains a unique Polish-language poem from 1612 by Walenty Roździeński, entitled ‘Officina Ferraria’. This jointly bound book was given to the Gniezno chapter library as a testamentary gift by Rev. Anthony Dyament in 1885. Its scientific and historical value was discovered before World War II by the librarian and chapter archivist, Rev. Canon Leon Formanowicz; it was scientifically analysed by Prof. Roman Pollak in 1936. The book – taken by the Germans to Poznań during the war, then returned to its rightful owner after the war – was reintroduced to the inventory in 1955. That same year, Rev. Stanislaw Bross, PhD, chapter vicar of the Gniezno Archdiocese while Primate Stefan Wyszyński was imprisoned, loaned it without notifying the metropolitan chapter to Prof. Kornel Wesołowski of the Warsaw University of Technology. Wesołowski held the book until his death in 1977, after which his widow donated it to the National Library. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Primate’s Chapter in Gniezno tried unsuccessfully to reclaim the valuable book. Most recently, in 2017, the current director of the Archdiocesan Archives in Gniezno, Rev. Michał Sołomieniuk, analysed the Gniezno early printed book in Warsaw. In the Cathedral Library in Gniezno the book retains the reference number BK Pl 178.

    Artykuł prezentuje oprawę Homiliarum z pełnopostaciowym radełkiem jagiellońskim przedstawiającym najprawdopodobniej Zygmunta I Starego i Bonę (ewentualnie Albrechta I Hohenzollerna). Opisywany wolumin odnaleziono w zasobie dawnej biblioteki seminaryjnej znajdującej się w zbiorach Archiwum Archidiecezjalnego w Gnieźnie. Na podstawie badań wycisku radełka oraz wpisów proweniencyjnych określam przypuszczalny czas i miejsce powstania narzędzia. W dalszej części artykułu przedstawiam jeszcze trzy woluminy, których oprawy z dużym prawdopodobieństwem pochodzą z tego samego warsztatu introligatorskiego. Dzięki ich analizie udało się nakreślić przypuszczalny czas i miejsce działania introligatora, który posługiwał się wspomnianym radełkiem jagiellońskim.
    The article presents the binding of the Homiliarum with a full image imprint made by a Jagiellonian bookbinders finishing roll that most probably shows King Sigismund I the Old (or Albrecht I Hohenzollern) and Bona Sforza. The volume under scrutiny has been found in the book collections of the former Seminary Library, now held in the collections of the Archdiocese Archives in Gniezno. While investigating the imprint made by the roll and the provenance entries for the volume, the present author attempts to determine the time and place of origination of the tool. Further on in the article three other volumes are presented whose bindings might have been made at the same binding shop. An analysis of the bindings has made it possible to determine the probable time and place where the book binder used the Jagiellonian roll in question.

    The article presents the role of books in two important chapter centres of the former Poland, Gniezno and Poznań, in the period between the 1430s and the 1530s. It is based on the source extracts from the chapter records made by Boleslaw Ulanowski. The aim of this paper is, apart from the presentation of author’s fi ndings, a summary and systematization of the information about libraries of the chapters, which to some extent has already been introduced into science. The article is divided into two parts. The fi rst focuses on the library of Gniezno, the other Poznań. Each of the two parts begins with the issues of the premises in which the collections were deposited. Next, the author continues to discuss in detail the issues of increasing the book collection (gifts and testamentary legacies), its content, maintenance, and borrowing as well as carers and users, both from inside the chapter, as well as outside it. The source quotations, given in extenso, play an important role; they have not been mentioned in the literature since B. Ulanowski’s publication. The introductory part of the paper discusses the previous literature on the issues of the Polish cathedral chapter libraries.
