Poznań 2019, Adam Mickiewicz University Press, pp. 257–272. ISSN 1644-6763. DOI 10.14746/pt.2019.32.13. The article is an attempt to interpret Ray Bradbury’s anti-utopian novel 451 degrees Fahrenheit, published in 1953, and two film adaptations of this book: the film directed in 1966 by François Truffaut and Ramin Bahran television adaptation from 2018. All versions have a similar story structure and tell about the near future, in which the main task of the fire department is burning books. The differences consist in shifts of emphasis within the world presented. The author proves that the 1966version shows a possible world, which is “an audio world”, while in Ramin Bahrani’s work we are dealing with the “pictorial world”; in the 1966 film the written word is replaced by sounds and the spoken word, and in the version from 2018 by paintings. These differences indicate not only different possibilities for interpreting Ray Bradbury’s novel, but also transformations that took place at different levels of the reality surrounding us.

In 2016, during excavations on a military site, part 1-24, in Las Puławski, a number of remains connected with the 20th century warfare were found. The field fortifications included front-line trenches, communication trenches and shelters. The analysis of their size and function and the artefacts found in the fills indicate that only one of the fortifications may be connected with World War I. The rest of the trenches were built by the 1st Polish Army, which operated in the area in July and August 1944, during an unsuccessful attempt to cross the Vistula River between Puławy and Dęblin.

Visions created by enthusiasts and critics of transhumanism represent both utopian possibilities and dystopian consequences entailed by creation of new humans. Narratives representing various ways of human evolution appear in many kinds of media, the text, however, concentrates on computer games whose form is eminently interesting in this respect. In computer games, the player becomes a cyborg, to some extent, as he/ she controls activities of the virtual avatar being aware, at the same time, of his/ her own corporeality.The aim of the article is to trace two main ways in which the effects of the transhuman evolution into the post-human are represented in chosen games. On the one hand, the ultimate post-human becomes a biological entity degenerated into a condition which is worse than contemporary homo sapiens, and on the other hand, it becomes a technological entity turned into a being of superhuman abilities. The article explores their role and their form in both the structure of the game and the virtual world itself. The material of this study comes from games in which the player controls a single avatar: Bioshock series, Deus Ex series, System Shock 2 and Prototype.

Creation and expansion of the Internet influenced the global economy, changing its social and cultural aspects as well. Significant part of this influence contributes to increase of gross domestic product. Internet access and efficient use of the global network is important to economic growth and reduction of development discrepancies between countries' economies. Research confirms growing role of the Internet in all areas of world economy. The fact that the growth is most visible in developing countries shows that differences between countries grow smaller; nonetheless, this trend is not universal, as it is limited to several developing countries only. The differences in Internet accessibility and use in different countries and areas of global economy are still visible. A purpose of this article is expressing the very interesting issues concerning the ritual sphere of big religions of world. In particular it concerns diet provisions referring to food of the animal origin. Principles of the religion determine in this situation, what kind of food is allowed to the consumption. Is a question, whether it is possible to separate the religion from the vegetarianism? Religions differ from themselves. However they agree as for the need for the moral behaviour and ethic. A charity and sympathizing towards the poor one are core values. These values are valued highly by all religions of world.

Paul Otlet’s visualizations of data integration seem to have some distinct parallels with the hypertext used in the World Wide Web. Researchers representing different disciplines (e.g., media specialists, sociologists, IT specialists and librarians) all indicate essential similarities between the attempts at the information and search system conceived by the Belgian author and visionary and that of the WWW. Accordingly, the article aims at finding an answer to the question whether Otlet’s visualizations are convergent to a certain degree with the WWW and whether the authors of the Web modeled their work on the Otlet’s achievements?

Podnoszony bywa argument, że w czasach połączonego społeczeństwa sieciowego, w środowisku bogatym w informacje, o niespotykanych nigdy wcześniej możliwościach komunikacyjnych, wychowawcze cnoty związane z moralnością, etyką i całościowym rozwojem człowieka są w coraz większym stopniu zastępowane przez pieniądze, pracę i władzę, co powoduje coraz szybsze poszerzanie się przepaści pomiędzy systemem a światem społecznym. Wychodząc od koncepcji Habermasa, według którego kolonizacja świata społecznego dokonuje się przez systemowe imperatywy racjonalizacji, pracy, pieniędzy i władzy, autor referatu utrzymuje, że takie przesunięcia w jaskrawy sposób przejawiają się w dyskursach dotyczących relacji między edukacją a pracą. Relacje te występują w pięciu obszarach. Urynkowienie i utowarowienie edukacji, wraz z wprzęgnięciem jej w służbę kapitału i pracy, przedstawione zostały na przykładzie jednego małego terytorium w Chinach. Następnie, czerpiąc inspirację z myśli Sertillanges’a i późnego Habermasa, artykuł postuluje: (a) potwierdzenie ważności moralnych, etycznych i duchowych wymiarów kształcenia; (b) odejście od wąsko instrumentalnej, kapitalistyczno-zachłannej wizji edukacji służebnej wobec rynku pracy i kontroli społecznej w stronę wyzwalającego widzenia edukacji jako działania komunikacyjnego i rozwoju bycia, a nie tylko zachowań; (c) ważność transcendencji i immanencji; a przez to (d) działania zmierzające w kierunku reintegracji systemu i świata społecznego uczestniczących w nim podmiotów.
The argument is raised that, in an age of the networked, connectedsociety in an information-rich environment with communication possibilities as never before experienced or made possible, the displacement of educational virtues of morality, ethics and the development of all-round human beings, by those of money, labour, power and work are speeding apace, and the disconnect between system and lifeworld is increasing. Drawing initially on the work of Habermas, in which the colonization of the lifeworld occurs by system imperatives of rationalization, labour, money and power, the paper argues that such moves are manifested starkly in discourses of the relation between education and work, andfive areas are introduced in which the links operate. The marketization and commodification of education, together with its incorporation into the service of capital and labour, are attested through a short worked example of one small territory within the larger context of China. Then, taking a lead from Sertillanges and Habermas’s later work, the paper argues for: (a) a reaffirmation of the importance of moral, ethical and spiritual dimensions of education; (b) the breaking of a narrowly instrumental, capital-acquisitive view of education as serving the jobs market and social control and towards a liberating view of education as communicative action and the development of being rather than simply behaving; (c) the importance of transcendence and immanence; and, thereby, (d) moves towards the re-integration of system and lifeworld in participating subjects.

The process of globalization in scientific literature is defined in a very varied way, first of all, because it is a complex, multi-dimensional and multiaspectual process. R. Robertson presents the most general and universal definition of globalization which nowadays has become the reference for formulating different definitions. According to him globalization is a set of processes which make the social world as one. A similar general formulation of this process can be found in A. Giddens’s writings – globalization is an intensification of world-wide social relations. The process of cultural globalization is proceeding before our eyes. We can observe and analyse it in every respect. However, until it lasts, it is hard to foresee what shape will take a predominant current of transformations in the contemporary culture. Today there is domination of the Western culture, particularly the American one. However, economists forecast that even in the first half of the 21st century the economies of China and India will become the world’s largest economies. Then, as it was already in the past, they will influence transformations occurring in culture in a significant way.

In the article the author presents her interpretation of corporeality in Szczepan Twardoch’s books. She performs her analysis of male body’s image by emphasizing the opposition between biology-based disruptions of social constructs and machine-like process yielding the projection of a perfect soldier. What was indicated by the author is the influence of German authors on Twardoch’s novels, particularly Klaus Theweleit’s works. The analysis focuses on Josef Magnor, the main character of Twardoch’s Drach, serving as a figure of defeat in the context of variegated social relations, most of all relating to masculinity. The key to understand the failure of masculinity in Twardoch’s works seems to be the opposition: the dry – the wet, which facilitates transferring of considerations on war symbols directly into interpretation of Polish recent literature.

Background. The article is an introduction to the issues related to the World Games – non-Olympic sports. Inspiration to write this article was the future role of Wroclaw – the host city of the World Games in 2017. The aim of the article was to present the history and principles of non-Olympic sports of the Games, and the popularization and knowledge expansion of topics related to the event. Material and methods. The research material includes documents of the World Olympic Sports – The World Games and the International Association of The World Games (IWGA). Results and conclusions. The World Games are a great event, connecting more and more International Sports Federations, Athletes and Spectators. The World Games are a chance to show niche and new disciplines that may be included in the Olympic program in future. It is also a great sporting event, where the spectators can experience successes and failures of their favorite athletes, cheer for them, and for a while forget the obligations of everyday life and surrender to the magic of sport.

Ostatnim etapem jest analiza przestrzenna zniszczeń na podstawie dostępnych planów.
Image of Bialystok in the years 1944-1948 is crucial in understanding the spatial changes that occurred during the reconstruction and implementation of economic plans by the communist authorities. Significant destruction of the city, especially its downtown materially affect the possibility of spatial transformations. The article is an analysis of data from the previously known sources on the subject and the documents to which the author has reached. The first part presents the statistics for each group of buildings in the subsequent analyses limited to the present and the pre-war downtown area. The last step is to analyze the spatial damage from the available plans.

O granicach grywalnej rzeczywistości poświęcony jest analizie problemu światotwórczego związanego ze strategiami delimitowania obszaru otwartego świata oraz rolą granicy w zawężaniu zarówno pola eksploracji, jak i doświadczenia rozgrywki. Skorzystawszy z narzędzi dostarczanych przez kognitywną i transmedialną narratologię, jak również z badań empirycznych w obszarze wykorzystania map ciepła w badaniu eksplorowania świata gier wideo, autor stara się rozważyć, czy wykorzystanie fokalizacji oraz wiedzy o narracyjnym polu widzenia może przysłużyć się pogłębieniu doświadczeń imersywnych w eksploracji i zwiększeniu swobody dokonywania wyborów – aspektów kluczowych dla pełnej satysfakcji odbiorczej z prawdziwie otwartego świata. Tezy artykułu zilustrowane są analizami światocentrycznymi wybranych gier wideo (Cyberpunk 2077, Skyrim, Total War: Warhammer II, Divinity II: Ego Draconis i innych). Celem analiz jest uwydatnienie najważniejszych komponentów otwartego świata gry i, co najistotniejsze, rozstrzygnięcie tego, do czego w gruncie rzeczy odnosić się może owo otwarcie.
This article addresses the issue of world-building as related to the strategies of delimiting the openness of the gameworld. Specifically, it treats of the role of a borderline that restricts both the range of exploration and the gaming experience. By using tools supplied by cognitive and transmedial narratology and by referring to empirical studies in thermal mapping of explorable game space, Krzysztof M. Maj inquires whether the use of focalization and of the knowledge of the narrative field of view can offer deepened immersive exploratory experiences and a greater freedom of choice – aspects crucial for the full enjoyment of a genuinely open world. Maj supports his theses with world-centered analyses of selected video games (Cyberpunk 2077, Skyrim, Total War: Warhammer II, Divinity II: Ego Draconis and others). His goal is to emphasize the most crucial aspects of an open gameworld and, most importantly, to decide what this “openness” actually refers to.
