    Opis:
    The article discusses main discourses and theoretical approaches towards the phenomenon of modernity in East Asia. The main discourses are identified as: Westernization/ Americanization approach, multiple modernity discourses and the theories of hybridization. The article analyzes main foundations, key premises and functions of the above mentioned discourses within the Asian and non-Asian contexts. Its also traces down advantages, flaws and implications of those discourses with reference to such notions as globalization, West, Asia, culture(s), tradition. The author concludes that rejection of the West/East and tradition/modernity stereotypical divide in the name of a non-essential, multi-casual approach represented by some of the multiple modernity and hybridization theories, may more adequately describe today's Asia and also, possibly, Asia in the future, than the discourses based on such a dualistic divisions.

    The countries situated on the west coast of the Persian Gulf base their economies on the export of oil, which inevitably opened them up to processes inherent in global relations. This led the Arab states of the Persian Gulf in the last 30 years of the 20th century to enrichment and increased their economic significance. Over time, growing fluctuations in oil prices enforced not only a process of diversification into their economic model through an extension of the service sector, but also brought in a work force from other countries. This changed ethnic relations in the region. New inhabitants, who are mainly from western countries, have brought with them not only their cultural values, but their education system as well. Gulf Cooperation Council countries have recognized mass immigration as temporary phenomenon. They have plans to educate the local work force and end migration, based on the experience of outside models. These plans have gone wrong owing to cultural limitations. Modern education has had an influence on the attitudes and expectations of the local youth, pushing them in the direction of westernisation. In response to this process, its opponents have supported Islamic projects. Persian Gulf countries have modernised their economies, but at the cost of globalization and the disintegration of the local society. The positive aspect of this process, which can be a good example for other countries in the Middle East, has been the creation of the nation.

    This article analyses the importance and the role of higher education for nations, and particularly the historical background of establishing the higher education system in Poland and Turkey. The author attempts to summarise the relationship between the general condition of education and socioeconomic situation in Poland and Turkey. The influence of historical, cultural and political factors on the process of reforming in education and the functioning of the first institutions of higher education is observed.
    W artykule dokonano analizy znaczenia i roli szkolnictwa wyższego dla narodów, w szczególności zaś historycznego tła tworzenia systemu szkolnictwa wyższego w Polsce i Turcji. Autor podjął próbę zrekapitulowania relacji między ogólną kondycją szkolnictwa a sytuacją społeczno-gospodarczą w Polsce i Turcji. Omówiono wpływ czynników historycznych, kulturowych i politycznych na proces of reformowania szkolnictwa i funkcjonowania pierwszych placówek szkolnictwa wyższego.

Podjął się próby odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy przemiany dokonujące się obecnie prowadzą do islamizacji świata zachodniego, czy raczej do modernizacji świata islamu. Dla znalezienia odpowiedzi Marinko Zekić wskazał przyczyny, przebieg wzajemnych kontaktów i zarysował ich potencjalne następstwa w przyszłości.

    Powszechna Deklaracja Praw Człowieka (1948) jest niewątpliwie jednym z najważniejszych dokumentów międzynarodowych. Jej podpisanie i przestrzeganie uchodzi na arenie politycznej za miarę stopnia „ucywilizowania” danego państwa. Autorka wykazuje, że powołując się na wywodzące się z tradycji zachodniej prawa człowieka, Deklaracja próbuje narzucić stojący za nią określony system wartości. Pomija się czynniki kulturowe, które niewątpliwie wpływają na odbiór oraz implementację Deklaracji w poszczególnych państwach. W artykule, przytaczając najważniejsze założenia taoizmu oraz konfucjanizmu odnoszące się do etyki oraz antropologii, wskazano na bogactwo myśli chińskiej. Zaakcentowano różnice pomiędzy wyznawanymi wartościami w społeczeństwach azjatyckich i zachodnich. Odwołując się do Deklaracji z Bangkoku (1993) ukazano potrzeby i cele państw Dalekiego Wschodu. Uzasadniono – na podstawie wybranych systemów filozoficznych – przyczyny „niechęci” zaakceptowania idei „praw człowieka” w Chinach, jak również negatywne postrzeganie procesu okcydentalizacji.
    The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) is undoubtedly one of the most important international documents. The Declaration’s signing and compliance is considered in the political arena as a measure of the degree of “civilising” of a given state. The present author indicates that, referring to the human rights that derive from the Western tradition, the Declaration attempts to impose a system of values standing behind it. Cultural factors, which undoubtedly influence the Declaration’s reception and implementation in the individual countries, are omitted. In the article, while citing the most important assumptions of Taoism and Confucianism with relation to the ethics and anthropology, the present author indicated the richness of Chinese thought. She also emphasises the differences between the professed values in Asian and Western societies. Referring to the Bangkok Declaration (1993), the author showed the needs and objectives of the Far East. She justified too – on the basis of selected philosophical systems – the cause of “reluctance” to accept the idea of “human rights” in China, as well as the negative perception of the process of Westernisation.

    Opis:
    This article studies the significance of the Polish books in the Basilian monasteries of the Lviv eparchy in the 18th century. During this century the number of the Polish, as well as Latin books were growing. A significant number of Polish books can be analyzed not only as latinisation or polonisation of Basilian monasteries, monks communities of the Eastern-Christian rite on the Ukrainian lands, but as „westernisation” as well. It means absorption of the contemporary Western (Latin) culture by the Polish mediation as the „latinitas polonice”. And it is verified in the most of Basilian monastery libraries of the Lviv eparchy of the 18th century.
