Assumptions of postmodern model are confronted with standards of behaviour which are commonly accepted. The next aim of the work is also to get answer to question about status of Thomistic education model nowadays.

In the following paper the author presents and analyses J. Maritain’s social theory. The French Thomist attempted to associate the principle of common good (that plays the main role in the Christian social thought) with democracy. Maritain claims that only democracy can be regarded as an acceptable form of government, i.e. the one that satisfies rational and moral requirements (which, according to the Thomists, are the same). Such a statement put forward by the Thomist philosopher emphasises the necessity of asking a number of questions of the human nature, human dignity and human autonomy; it also demonstrate how to introduce the ethical values into the realm of democratic politics, which in its turn is described as axiologically neutral by contemporary political theories. J. Maritain’s views on those issues were taken into consideration by Catholic intellectuals and were announced before the Second Vatican Council. Regarding the time they were widely opened to the contemporary ideas. Consequently, they contributed to the significant development of the current attitude of the Catholic Church to the present political and social problems.

This paper aims: 1. To discuss Romano Guardini’s method of philosophical and religious studies and its achievements, i.e. presenting the Christian eidos as finding its fullest expression in Jesus as our Lord. 2. To compare Guardini’s method with medieval philosophy as taught by Thomas Aquinas and others. Citing G. van Rieta, the paper attempts to show that Thomism should be continued today, drawing on contemporary philosophy, the phenomenological method in particular. This is a reliable way to see what Christianity is in itself, in its specific religious character.

The article begins from the state of research on the history of Thomistic philosophy to the Czech Republic. It discusse the most important figures of the Czech Thomism in 1897-1948 taking them in two generations of scholars. The particular attention is devoted to the Thomist environment Dominican Order from Olomouc who were publishing quarterly Filosofická revue in 1929-1948. As an example of the work of Czech Thomists author discusses an issue connected with the philosophical and theological aspects of upbringing the man. The achievements of Czech Thomists compared with whole Czech philosophy in author’s opinion is considerable: they organized International Conference of Thomistic Philosophy, they founded a magazine which was up to the global mark and published in it among others Maritain, Husserl, Patočka, they discussed about the latest philosophical currents and they reviewed philosophical dissertations from whole world. Czech Thomists’ writer activity also is very important: they published a lot of textbooks, monographs, dissertations and articles. Not all aims of Czech philosophers realized but they ordered relationships between faith and science. It was the reason treating Thomism in Republic Czech as a methodological thoroughness paragon.

The text considers the relations between friendship and revolution. The author seeks inspiration for the understanding of these relations in St. Thomas’s opusculum, On Kingship, Negri’s and Hardt’s books and Jadwiga Staniszkis Samoograniczająca się rewolucja [Self-limiting Revolution]. Friendship helps to rebel against tyranny but the overpowering rebellion hinders the maintenance of friendship – St. Thomas suggests. The solution is a difficult art of the self-limiting of revolution, inspired by the Christian love of a neighbour and Mao Tse-Tung’s cultural revolution (within limits, of course).

Tadeusz Klimski devoted to the problem of unity dissertation, entitled “One and being. Analysis of the realistic concepts (Aristotle, St. Thomas Aquinas, modern Thomists)”, published in 1992. The paper characterises idealist philosophy in exposures and explanations of representatives of realism. It indicates the field of further considerations: Aristotle’s account which is determined by views of the pre–Socratics, and above all Plato, philosophical views of Thomas Aquinas, alluding to discussion with the Arabic philosophers, especially Avicenna, and often relating to the horizon designated by revelation and needs of interpreting it by theology, recognition of contemporary Thomists of various trends, the only realistic trend in contemporary philosophy. Even more interesting is placing the issues of unity in the problematic context. Tadeusz Klimski believed that the problematic field is twofold, and its starting point is epistemology: 1) platonic idealism, which leads (even if it is against Plato himself) to monism, where unity is seen as the first and fundamental philosophical problem — here unity is associated with the entire cosmos, today as well as in the in the materialistic or spiritualistic version. 2) Aristotelian realism leads to pluralism in the theory of being, in which philosophers–realists try to interpret the unity — unity here is associated with individual being. While formulating his standpoint, Tadeusz Klimski refers to Mieczyslaw Gogacz’s account, that unity is called the power of the act of existence to actualizing the real essence of being. Unity, therefore, is manifested in the whole being, but the act of existence is its source. This view is consistent Thomistic, specifying the relationship of unity with the existence of individual being. This view can be a good basis to consider the role of unity in cognition, the role of unity in action or various forms of social unity.

The article attempts to present Étienne Gilson’s approach to Thomas Aquinas’ existential interpretation of being. The French thinker’s apprehension of Aquinas’ system is characterized by accentuating existential perspective within the framework of the analysis of the structure of being. Gilson supported existential Thomism and, consequently, strongly emphasized the role of existence (esse) for being real. The French philosopher was of opinion that the existence of being should be depicted by means of existential judgments that affirm real and specific existence of beings. According to Gilson, the existential judgment of the affirmation-oriented being is the starting point for metaphysics.

A teaching of general metaphysics and the philosophy of God in the Major Sem-inary of the Diocese of Siedlce, 1919 – 2018 Afer the revival of the Siedlce Seminary in 1919, metaphysics was frst taught as a part of the philosophy course according to the handbook Elementa philosophiae scholasticae of S. Reinstadler in the spirit of traditional thomism. Afer Te Second World War, from the 1960s, the teaching refers to the way of practicing metaphysics in the Lublin School of existential thomism. Today, it is also enriched with references to analytical thomism. Te main topics of the lecture are consistent with the classical, scholastic form of metaphysics presentation: 1. Te problem of being 2. Transcendental properties and frst principles 3. Te structure of being (act and potency, substance and accidents, form and matter, essence and existence) 4. Te analogy of being (especially in relation to existential thomism). Te content of the lecture on natural theology (theodicy) also refects the scholastic tradition and covering the metaphysics of the First Reason (existence and nature of the Absolute) and the theological consequences resulting from it.
Po odrodzeniu Seminarium Siedleckiego w 1919 Metafzyka była najpierw wykładana w ramach kursu flozofi według podręcznika S. Reinstadlera Elementa philosophiae scholasticae w duchu tomizmu tradycyjnego. Po wojnie, od lat 60-tych wykład nawiązuje do sposobu uprawiania metafzyki w Szkole Lubelskiej tomizmu egzystencjalnego. Współcześnie jest też wzbogacony odniesieniami do tomizmu analitycznego. Główne tematy wykładu są zgodne z klasyczną, scholastyczną formą prezentacji metafzyki: 1. Problem bytu 2. Własności transcendentalne i pierwsze zasady 3. Struktura bytu (akt i możność, substancja i przypadłości, forma i materia, istota i istnienie) 4. Zagadnienie analogii bytowej (szczególnie w odniesieniu do tomizmu egzysten-cjalnego) Treść wykładu z teologii naturalnej (teodycei) również odzwierciedla tradycję scholastyczną i obejmuje zagadnienia metafzyki Racji Ostatecznej (istnienie i natura Absolutu) oraz wynikające z niej konsekwencje teologiczne.

Wilfrid Sellars very often expounds his philosophical views in an historical context. In his paper „Being and Being Known” Sellars gives a succinct account of his epistemology while at the same time discussing the Thomistic conception of sensory and intellectual knowledge. His aim in that paper is to provide a plausible interpretation of the doctrine that both the senses and the intellect are informed by the nature of external objects, and thus our cognitive acts are isomorphic with their objects. Sellars claims that there are two dimensions to that isomorphism, and that those separate dimensions are conflated by the Thomists, as well as by other philosophers. That is to say, there is isomorphism in the real or the natural order, and there is isomorphism in the intentional or the logical order. Sellars insists that in sensory cognition isomorphism holds merely in the real order. By contrast, intellectual knowledge is based upon the isomorphism of the intentional order. However, that isomorphism obtains in virtue of specific relations holding in the real order. Thus those two orders are intimately connected. Unfortunately, Sellars does not fully elaborate the nature of the connections between those two orders. I argue that in light of his commitment to ontological naturalism, Sellars should claim that ultimately there is only one isomorphism, namely the isomorphism in the real order. I suggest that his insistence that there are no genuine semantical relations holding between the elements of the intentional and the real supports such an interpretation.

The presenting article presents the main themes of Piotr Semenenko polemics with Andrzej Towiański, which took place in the environment of the Great Emigration. It concerned many matters, including some philosophical ideas related to the Catholic faith. They belonged mainly to fhe field of interest in the philosophy of cognition, general theory of being, philosophy of God and religion, angelology, philosophy of man and philosophy of history. Semenenko’s polemic with Towiański resulted from their representing different philosophical traditions. The first referred essentially to Thomistic philosophy, while the second drew from ideas to Neoplatonic philosophy and the currents of thought that were close to it, which cannot be reconciled with the Thomistic and Christian vision of the world, especially in the matter of understanding its most important elements, which are God and the human person. The use of Thomism in the fight against Towianism has shown that it is the form of Christian philosophy that best serves the Catholic faith as its intellectual foundation, which seems important in the context of current discussions about the doctrinal shape of this faith and its threats from religious syncretism.

Opis:
The concept of existence (esse) as an act of making realistic and actual individual being describes the basic feature of Consequential Thomism which refers to all possible philosophical analysis from the topic of existence (esse), because existence (esse) is the first and initiating principle of being. Professor Gogacz claims that the beginning of the modification of depictions the issue of esse in the context of Existential Thomism is published in book Istnieć i poznawać in 1969. Theses of this book also are found in the script about philosophy of being (1973) entitled Ważniejsze zagadnienia metafizyki. The most mature formula of Consequential Thomism is in the Elementarz metafizyki (1987). Some topics were developed in details in the articles that also are in the following books: Historia filozofii w poszukiwaniu realizmu (2011) and W kierunku tomizmu konsekwentnego (2012). The analysis of these texts allows to separate ten topics connected with the problem of esse: 1) act of existence’s characteristic, 2) types of acts of existence, 3) making realistic and actual as an act of existence’s ‘action’, 4) the issue of Ipsum Esse Subsistens, 5) the problem of not independent being (accident) of act of being (ipsum esse), 6) the issue of transcendentals, 7) the knowledge of the existence (esse), 8) the issue of creatio esse and conservatio esse 9) the order of thesis in metaphysics, 10) the historical and philosophical aspects of the modification of Thomism which led to its consistent version. In Istnieć i poznawać M. Gogacz represents an Existential Thomism and he is influenced by thought of M. A. Krąpiec. Elementarz metafizyki is the most mature version of Consequential Thomism. According it Consequential Thomism is characterized by: 1) Recognition of statements of Avicenna’s philosophy and taking them out from Existential Thomism; 2) Understanding of existence (esse) as a created principle which initiate an individual being; 3) The experience essential principles in verbum cordis; 4) Application the essential order of causes and results with consistent notice of pluralism; 5) Distinguishing the relationship connected with esse and the relationship connected with essentia and joining the experience of ipsum esse with relationship connected with esse and joining experience of unity of esse-principles with essential relationship; 6) Using the depiction of essence (essentia) permeated by existence (esse), what should be understanding as a subsistentia, in the issue of person.

Opis:
This article investigates the educational role of prayer in Jacek Woroniecki’s works. As Woroniecki (1878–1949) was a Thomist, his philosophical and theological reflection was complementary. In order to reveal the humanism of Christian formation the article concentrates on Woroniecki’s philosophical claims. It consists of six parts. Part 1 defines prayer as a practice and shows that prayer is an important part of human inner culture (formation). Part 2 reveals a relationship, which is vital for prayer, between man and God as a relation between two real and personal beings. Part 3 discusses the topic of relations between grace and nature in man’s growth. Part 4 studies the mysticism of everyday life if man’s actions are considered as a prayer. Part 5 deals with the forms of prayer in the context of the ontic status of man and Part 6 – with the human factors of prayer: the will, the mind, senses and the body. The findings of all those analyses confirm that in the philosophical (i.e. Thomistic) approach prayer is the core of human spiritual growth.
