    Opis:
    The subject of discussion in the article is the way the protagonist of Vladimir Nabokov’s short story Sounds perceives the world. The sense-forming function of the sound as a literary trick, serv-ing to conceptualize the image of the world and the descriptions of emotional states of Nabokov’s characters, is revealed. It is proved that due to the recollective strategy (reconstructing in his mem-ory the day of parting with the beloved) the protagonist-artist perceives the ubiquitous harmony of sounds in the surrounding reality and at the same time recognizes (Gadamer) his own feelings that once bound him with his beloved. The “rhythmic order” of nature experienced by the protagonist evokes associations with Pythagorean reflection on the existence of permanent dependencies be-tween the rhythm of the Cosmos and the rhythms of man. This finds its expression in Nabokov’s short story in showing the intermingling of the worlds: establishing a relationship (unity) between the internal (emotional) and external (nature) world, between micro and macrocosm. The act of rec-ollection itself inscribes in a strategy of tranforming memories: forming in imagination a different image of the lovers’ parting and creating another – a dreamed image of the beloved.

    W pracach z filozofii fizyki, historii nauki, w biografiach i autobiografiach uczonych oraz w literaturze popularnonaukowej występują treści o charakterze estetycznym. Wartości estetyczne i kojarzone z nimi właściwości pełnią wielorakie funkcje we współczesnej fizyce, między innymi stanowią poza empiryczne kryteria wyboru teorii naukowych. Najczęściej pojawiającymi się wartościami estetycznymi są kategorie piękna, elegancji i harmonii. Źródła połączenia nauki i estetyki odnajdziemy w starożytnej filozofii przyrody, a dokładnie w filozofii pitagorejczyków zasymilowanej przez Platona i Arystotelesa. Aspekty filozofii pitagorejskiej dotyczące odkryć w dziedzinie akustyki i matematyki zostały połączone z wartościami estetycznymi za sprawą platońskiej triady dobro-piękno-prawda, zaś estetyka Arystotelesa związana z pitagorejskim porządkiem miary i proporcji w świecie wzmocniła to połączenie. W starożytnych poglądach pitagorejsko-platońskich odnajdziemy także przyczyny późniejszych przeszkód epistemologicznych, które uczeni łączyli z aspektami estetycznymi.
    In works on the philosophy of physics, the history of science, in biographies and autobiographies of scientists, and in popular science literature, there is aesthetic content. Aesthetic values and associated properties have multiple functions in modern physics including non-empirical criteria for selecting scientific theories. The most common aesthetic values are the categories of beauty, elegance and harmony. The sources of the connection between science and aesthetics can be found in the ancient philosophy of nature, particulary in the philosophy of the Pythagoreans, assimilated by Plato and Aristotle. The aspects of Pythagorean philosophy regarding the discoveries in acoustics and mathematics were linked to aesthetic values through the Platonic good-beauty-truth triad, while Aristotle's aesthetics of the Pythagorean order of measure and proportion in the world strengthened this connection. In the ancient Pythagorean-Platonic views we also find the causes of the later epistemological obstacles which scholars associated with aesthetic aspects.

    Artykuł ten stara się pokazać, iż podstawową zasadą metafizyczną pitagorejczyków było przekonanie o harmonii i porządku świata, które miały się najpierw przejawiać w jego strukturze arytmetycznej, zastąpionej następnie po odkryciu wielkości niewspółmiernych (czyli liczb niewymiernych, jak je nazywamy obecnie) strukturą geometryczną. Na przykładzie metafizyki i nauki pitagorejskiej artykuł pokazuje wzajemne związki pomiędzy metafizyką i nauką. Dowodzi z jednej strony niezbędności tej pierwszej dla tej drugiej, dla której pełni rolę przewodnika, z drugiej zaś pokazuje, w jaki sposób poszukiwania naukowe mogą nas zmuszać do modyfikacji wyjściowej metafizyki wówczas, kiedy ta jest nietrafna i nie sprawdza się w badaniach naukowych. Artykuł ten stara się też wykazać na przykładzie pitagorejczyków niezbędność realistycznego podejścia do poznania, czyli konieczność wyjścia poza to, co jest dane w zjawiskach.
    This paper attempts to demonstrate that the conviction about the harmony and order of the world was a fundamental metaphysical principle of the Pythagoreans. This harmony and order were primarily sought in the structures of arithmetics, yet following the discovery of incommensurable magnitudes (irrational numbers, as we now call them), the Pythagoreans began to see geometrical structure as a fundamental part of the world. On the example of the Pythagoreans’ metaphysics and science, the paper shows the mutual relations between metaphysics and science. It demonstrates—on the one hand—the necessity of the first as a guide for the latter, and—on the other—how our scientific research can change its basic metaphysical principles when these are found to be inappropriate. The paper also tries to show the need for a realistic approach in our scientific research by means of the same example of the Pythagoreans, that is, the need to discern something which is below the surface appearance.
