The article presents Atanazy Raczyński’s research on Portuguese art against the modernization and Europeanisation processes in Portugal in the 19th century. A specific view of Portuguese artistic heritage and openly expressed critical opinions of the Polish scholar made him a controversial figure, which paradoxically contributed to the importance and resonance of his work. Discouraged by the conflict, Raczyński did not complete his final synthesis. Nevertheless his letters to the Art Society in Berlin, as well as a dictionary

Transgressing the Semi-peripheral Condition – the Idea of a Spiritual Empire in Fernando Pessoa The purpose of this article is the analysis of the transformation of the idea of the Fifth Empire from the myth of sebastianism in the works of Fernando Pessoa. Taking the advantage of the meaning of the idea of empire in the collective imagination, Pessoa employs it as a metaphor for his own proposal of creation of a spiritual empire, the empire of universal and transnational culture in response to the identity crisis provoked by the self-identification by the national community as a semi-peripheral one. Due to the analysis of the concepts of nation, fatherland, imperialism, civilization, and finally reinterpretation of the various elements of the myth of the Fifth Empire, Pessoa comes to the creation of a new identity proposal for his national community, moving the imperial imagery into the realm of spiritual and recalling in his vision of the empire of universal culture such Portuguese national features as syncretism, mimicry and hybridism (the diagnosis of Boaventura de Sousa Santos).

Polish–Portuguese bilingualism
Polish language in Brazil
Opis:
The subject matter of this paper is Polish–Portuguese bilingualism observed in one of the Brazilian villages founded by Polish rural immigrants in the second half of the 19th century in the south of the country. The primary instrument for collecting data were the interviews conducted with 48 residents of the village in 2018. The presented outcome confi rms the trends noticed in the study by S. Kucharski [1996] and W. Miodunka [2003]; namely, the fairly high level of preservation of Polish in Brazil and discrepancies in the level of command of the spoken and written code by the interviewees. The analysed data permit also the ascertainment of the phenomenon that Polish is being forgotten in the bilingualisation process and that it is disappearing in the surveyed village in general.

Opis:
The article aims to discuss the Chinese culture inspirations in Polish and Portuguese modernist poetry. In the context of Polish-Portuguese literary relationships, late Romantic, Symbolic, Parnassianism-related and Oriental tendencies are presented in the works of a Portuguese poet Antón Feijó (1859-1917), with references to a selected aspect of Leopold Staff’s works (1878-1957). A historical-literary analysis is accompanied by literary and cultural comparative studies. Within the comparative method of presenting the Parnassian palimpsests, as 'The Chinese Lyric Book' ('Cancioneiro Chinês', 1890) by António Feijó and 'Chinese Flute' ('Fletnia chińska', 1922) by Leopold Staff are categorised, the thesis about the independent status of the works in question was built. Modernist visions of the Orient, understood to date a paraphrase or an adaptation of Chinese poetry read in translations from French, gain the status of original works. In view of blurring the differences between the European adaptations - Portuguese poem and Polish poetic prose, based on Oriental motifs drawn from two different French sources (translations): Judith Gautier’s and Franz Touissant’s works - and the Chinese original, the methodological approach to the text as to a palimpsest is justified. Feijó’s “Chinese Poetry” and Oriental poetic landscapes in Staff’s prose are therefore independent literary works, analysed in parallel, as mirror reflections of the fascination with the Orient’s culture. The literary works in question fully deserve the title of cultural texts, the recipient of which will be a Polish reader, a lover of poetry inspired by French Parnassianism.

Opis:
This article tentatively provides acomparative outlook on Polish and Portuguese Romanticism. Taking as a starting point the famous parallel between the opposite ends of Europe sketched by the 19th-century historian Joachim Lelewel, the author claims that Polish and Portuguese literature, although they had almost no direct contact with each other, participated in the same system of cultural coordinates established by European Romanticism. At the same time, both nations had some sort of dispute or clash with Europe, developing syndromes of inferiority, as well as megalomaniac visions of their moral superiority. Almeida Garrett and Alexandre Herculano tried to provide a solution, harmonising their country with its European context. The conclusion accentuates the uttermost victory of this harmonising vision, presenting the contemporary Portuguese culture as fully Europeanised and contrasting it with the doubts concerning European identity that may be observed in contemporary Poland.

Does the European Portuguese Risk Becoming a Peripheral Language? The question put in the title comes from polemics and discussions going on in Portugal on the subject of the recent Portuguese writing reform (1990). Its long legislation process has only finished in the last years. A concise history of the Portuguese language’s orthography and changes introduced by the reform, purposing an unification of the European and Brazilian Portuguese writing, are presented in the paper. Afterwards, based on Portuguese and global press extracts from 2004–2009, comes an analysis and a critique of the arguments adduced by partisans of the reform, explaining its legitimacy and advantages, as well as by its opponents, much more numerous in Portugal. The last ones prophesy a forthcoming marginalization of their version of the Portuguese language in comparison to Brazilian version’s approaching hegemony.

In this paper, I will look at the functioning of space through a specific example of the practice of socially modelling past realities in the 1940 Exposition of the Portuguese World. (Exposição do Mundo Português). The perspective of the Exposition will allow us to analyse the model of the"Portuguese world" and propose the creation of an interpretative key, in order to understand the “essence” of Portuguese spatial imagery. We will look at the exhibition in the perspective of Krzysztof Pomian's semiophore theory, trying to interpret its main assumptions and the cultural patterns that fund it, as well as what kind of model of space it co‑creates. In the light of the exhibition we will try to answer the question of how space constitutes the mental foundation of the model of the"Portuguese world". And how the spatial patterns of Portuguese culture are made present through the selected semiophores of the Portuguese World Exhibition.

In this article, I described the commercial role and functions of lançados and tangomãos at the turn of the 16th and 17th century. They were Portuguese runaways who fled to West Africa and lived there amongst Africans. The main occupation of lançados and tangomãos was trade, as they served as middlemen between African people and European merchants. They also worked as translators and guides after they acclimatized to African societies and learnt their languages and customs. Since the second half of the 16th century they became an important part of barter throughout the whole African coast from the Senegal River to Sierra Leone. Although they were Portuguese, they traded also with other European merchants (mainly French, English and Dutch) who came to that region, which finally prevented the Portuguese Crown from monopolizing the commerce in West Africa.

Opis:
The advent of new music technologies has led to a rapid growth of the audio preservation field. Music is not independent of its medium, and this growing loss of independence calls for a transdisciplinary approach with a strong technological component. Musical compositions created in the second half of the twentieth century exist in the intersection of technology, embodiment, and sound and thus widen the importance of aspects such as human and non-human interactions. This article will reflect on these issues and how they reframe (digital) philology methods through the works of Constança Capdeville. The works by this seminal artist are accompanied by an extensive archive that includes scores, recorded sounds, video and images, among other documents. It will be demonstrated how a reflexive approach to digital philology can bring concealed archival stories to light while fostering new meanings on what it means to preserve our sound heritage. Resource optimisation is one of the reasons methods of traditional philology are particularly useful for the preservation of contemporary musical heritage. Today the amount of information is excessive, and categorisation and organisation are complex. Most information exists in the form of digitised documents, that comply with certain requirements traditionally applied to secular paper registers while assessing qualities such as reliability and authenticity. Traditional philology approaches framed around these qualities are insufficient for born-digital documents. A reflexive approach to digital philology, focussed both on the creation of digital resources (from digitalisation to cataloguing) and the criticism of digital sources, as a solution the digital treatment of documents is proposed. A comparative approach will be used to understand in what ways digital and analogue media intertwine in the forms we think, reflect, historicise, and preserve our sound archives, and how we make visible aspects that were previously concealed through new forms of categorising and digitising documents.

Portugalczycy to bez wątpienia najwięksi w dziejach odkrywcy i podróżnicy. White Fleet, Frota Branca.
The Portuguese are undoubtedly the greatest explorers and travelers in history. From the 15th to the 17th century, they ruled the world’s oceans, but being a small country they quickly lost their struggle for influence in most newly discovered areas to stronger European powers. At the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, Portuguese sailing ships reached the coast of today’s Brazil, which for over three centuries became the pearl in the crown of Portuguese overseas possessions for centuries. It was also Brazil where the Portuguese emigrated most often. However, they were leaving not only to their colonies. Portugal almost never was a prosperous country for most of its inhabitants. In the period of 100 years, from the end of the 19th century to the 1990s, about 4 million people left the country. According to statistics, in 2007, almost 5 million Portuguese lived outside their country. The largest number of them lived in the Americas – 2.8 million, while across Europe the Portuguese Diaspora in 2007 was as large as almost 1.6 million people. Not only do the Portuguese migrate around the world, but they are also intrepid fishermen who fished for over 500 years on the Grand Banks, on the north-western coast of today’s Canada. In the 20th century, their presence in the East Canadian fisheries was dominated by the so-called White Fleet, Frota Branca

Opis:
Taking into account the Brazilian reception of the novel O Primo Bazilio, the author outlines the cultural connections between the Portuguese realist writer Eça de Queiroz and Brazil. The starting point of the argument is the heated public debate on the novel at the end of the 19th century. The article discusses Eça de Queiroz as a creative continuator of French realism and naturalism, referring to the specific cultural phenomena in Brazil and his unusual closeness with Romanticism. The article attempts to combine the musical narration of Eça and the irony present in his literary prose production and the new Brazilian cultural intertext. In the context of the mythical Pasiphae discourse as the story about an adulteress, Brazilian literature and music create a polyphonic narrative expression in so far as Eça´s discourse does the same. The poetic ending may be taken for a voice in the discussion about the position of a woman who does (not) liberate herself from the social convention in the patriarchal society.

Dom jutra wykreowany w wyobraźni architekta usytuowany będzie w takim przypadku pomiędzy innowacyjnością, związaną z odpowiadaniem na potrzeby teraźniejszości i przyszłości, a tradycją dającą możliwość wytworzenia powiązania z przeszłością. Problem przeanalizowany został na przykładzie projektów domów jednorodzinnych portugalskiego biura architektonicznego Aires Mateus.
Nowadays, under the requirements of rapidly changing fashion, growing needs of novelty and improvements, the expiration date of all products, including products of architecture is short. The architect who wants to combat this tendency of outdating, may try to create the everlasting value of his work. The permanence of values in architectural design may be achieved by linking it to the tradition. The house of tomorrow, created in architect’s imagination, may be the combination of the innovation associated with responding to the present and future needs, with the tradition enabling the formation of connection with the past.

Opis:
The article is an attempt at comparing the Polish and Portuguese migration experiences in the period of great labor migration until 1914. The periods of Portugal’s establishment of its colonial empire in the sixteenth century and the period of the Polish expansion east, to Rus in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries have been juxtaposed before. In the Time of Troubles Polish literature promoting eastward expansion quite directly referred to the examples of India’s or America’s colonization. In the nineteenth century the reasons for emigration from the two distant parts of Europe were similar (overpopulation, economic underdevelopment), the destinations were different, however. The Portuguese most often left for Brazil, with which Portugal remained strongly interconnected even after Brazil gained independence. For Poles, the country of emigration was predominantly the U.S. It was there, on the territory of New England, that the representatives of both of the groups met, and even cooperated, in the weaving industry. Both in Portugal and Poland emigration commenced on peripheral territories (Madera and provinces neighboring with Spain in the case of Portugal and the Polish-German and Polish-Hungarian borderland in the case of Poland). In both groups the percentage of returnees was high. It is only later that the Portuguese will travel to other countries, e.g. in Western Europe. Polish emigrants have had already discovered routes to Western Europe. Poles numerously traveled for work also to the occupying states. In this phenomenon we can find similarities to Portuguese migration to the territory of their empire. Regardless of the destination, individual and family histories, be it Portuguese or Polish, were very similar. In the interwar period an interesting postscript has been added to these histories. Poland and certain circles made, unsuccessful, attempts to organize Polish settlement in the Portuguese colonies in Angola and Mozambique.
