Polish-Russian relations
stosunki polsko-rosyjskie
Opis:
Contemporary Polish-Russian relations are examined, taking into consideration the broad internal conditions in Poland and in Russia. Negative mutual stereotypes prevail in both countries, shaped in the course of a complicated history of mutual relations, while the concepts of international policies in both states are underdeveloped and divergent. Polish-Russian relations are increasingly more influenced by external conditions, such as the profound change Europe is going through and the evolution of the entire international order. The most important modern issues in Polish-Russian relations concern the persistent differences in the perception of the history of mutual relations, dissimilar concepts of the European security system, and energy security. The conditions of relations between Poland and Russia affect Poland’s ability to pursue its international interests in many areas: in relations with Russia and the CIS, in the forum of international organizations (NATO, EU, Council of Europe, OSCE and the UN), in relations with Poland’s closest allies and partners (Germany, France, U.S. and Ukraine). Finally, Polish-Russian relations influence the position and international role of Poland, limiting it when these relations are bad or augmenting it when they are good. Since late 2007 Poland has been trying to conduct a pragmatic policy and normalize its relations with Russia. In general, Polish-Russian reconciliation seems feasible.

Opis:
The objective of the article is to indicate similarities as well as discrepancies between the Polish and German governments’ stands on the crisis and conflict in Ukraine. The author tries to respond to the question: What will be the implications of the conflict in Ukraine for the “Eastern policy” of Poland and Germany? Will they result in the continuation of their current “Eastern policy”, its evolution or maybe they will bring an essential change to their policy in the region? In author’s opinion, taking into account signifi cant differences between the Polish and German foreign policies towards Russia and Ukraine between 2014 and 2015 as well as before that period, the possibility for enhanced cooperation between the two governments in relation to their foreign policy towards Russia and Ukraine will continue to be remote in the upcoming years.

The article is devoted to the controversial, pro-Russian Polish editor of “Tygodnik Petersburski”, Józef Emmanuel Przecławski. He was the alumnus of the Vilnius University and a contemporary of Adam Mickiewicz and the Philomaths, later to become loyal to the Russian Empire. The author of the article uses the Russian socio-political background to analyse the correspondence between Przecławski, the periodical’s censor and the Tsar’s advisors who, over the objections of chief editor, collaborated to transform the weekly into a bilingual Polish-Russian edition. The analysis is based on citations from the Russian archives sources.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to reflect on the religiosity of Stalinist prisoners shaped by religion or the Christian tradition. A comparison of works of Polish and Russian literature demonstrates that prisoners from the Soviet Union and Poland essentially otherwise referred to the faith, to the Decalogue. Most of the inmates came into the camp from the country’s militant atheism, infected with a hostility to religion as “the opium of the masses”, and only in the camp were they looking for ways to return to the faith of their fathers. However, they often kept faith in the value of humanity, they represented a secular holiness. A substantial majority of Polish prisoners affirmed their Catholicism, which was not only a witness of their faith, but also synonymous with Polish culture. Such an attitude often hampered relations with the Orthodox and Greek Catholics. A large part of the Polish inmates reluctantly referred to them as Christians of the Eastern Rite, as a consequence of Catholic education in pre-war Poland, but also out of hostility towards Russians and Ukrainians. Many of them, however, disregarded religious issues, they referred to a fellow prisoner with respect, regardless of his religion. They looked at them from the human perspective.

Opis:
Amiradżibi-Stawińska (1932–2017), a director born in Tbilisi, was educated in Moscow Film Institute. She came to Poland with her first husband, Jerzy Ziarnik, where she made a dozen or so documentaries and feature films. However, she reached the peak of her career when she was married to her second husband – a screenwriter and director, Jerzy Stefan Stawiński. In Poland, Amiradżi-bi-Stawińska published three memoirs: Słodkie życie księżniczki (1996), Książka antykucharska(2007) and Moja filmowa Moskwa. Białym pociągiem dookoła wódki... i nie tylko (2011), where we can find many interesting comments on life in Georgia, Russia and Poland in the 30s–70s in the 20thcentury. The text concentrates on the subject of film that is present in all her books, which shows cultural relationships and habits of the artistic circles in those years and in each of the three coun-tries. In the memoirs we can see the director’s artistic path against the background of the turbulent events of the 20th century; they are also a source of information about important figures in the film industry in Georgia, Russia and Poland.

Opis:
Polish-Russian relations seem to be heavily burdened by historical experience. History in- fluences the present not only indirectly, via historical facts, but also via the ways of commem- orating them. Referring to their memories, social groups strengthen the sense of their own uniqueness and cultural identity. One of the ways to commemorate events are anniversary celebrations accompanied by a certain political rhetoric. The author analyzes the texts, press releases, commentaries and an- niversary speeches given by politicians to commemorate the Katyñ massacre published by the „Gazeta Wyborcza” and „Rzeczpospolita” daily in April 1990, 2000 and 2010. Among the figures of memory identified in the analyzed texts which are typical of the Pol- ish-Russian dialogue concerning the Katyñ issue over the period of 1990–2010, there prevails a certain group of topoi appropriated by the language of politics from Christianity, and pre- cisely from the sacrament of confession. These topoi are based on reconciliation and compen- sation. Other topoi involve those of a victim, righteous Russian or a common field of memory.

Polish-Russian relations at the turn of the 20th century
Opis:
Aleksander Lednicki and the fate of his milieu of the Polish community in Russia at the turn of the 20th cent. as a mirror of the transformations of the Polish field of powerThe paper deals with the phenomenon of waning memory of the Polish economic elite in the late Russian Empire. It is related to the disappearance of the memory of the liberal political movement of the Polish political scene before the First World War. Mechanisms of these processes of forgetting are related to the theory of Pierre Bourdieu, in particular it is argued that the liberal Polish elite of the Russian Empire could be defined as economic-capital-based elite. Its rivals, both socialists led by Piłsudski and National-Democrats led by Dmowski, classical intelligentsia figures, could be seen as leaders of the cultural capital-based elites. As it is argued, the intelligentsia was in many ways a benefactor of the Bolshevik Revolution, which deprived the Polish economic elite of most of their capitals and led to its political marginalization. In effect the intelligentsia was able to impose its values and social hierarchies on the modern Polish national identity, which ever since is defined in terms largely unrelated to the economic logic. These mechanisms privilege memory of the intellectual figures and freedom-fighters in the mainstream canons of Polish history. A closer look at the forgotten economic and political Polish elite of the late Russian Empire allows to point out to several arbitrary elements in the dominant readings of the Polish and Russian history in contemporary Poland. They are illustrated in the paper on the example of the biography of Aleksander Lednicki, a prominent politician and lawyer, leader of the Polish community in Moscow until 1918.

Opis:
International relations have always been a very complex and controversial phenomene affected by historical and political events, wchich influenced the forming of mutual prejudices, antipathy and stereotypes. The concept of national identity and nationalism began to shape relativetly late, in the XVI-XVII cebturies, and their advent was connected with national self-consiousness rise and political conditionnaly. This statement is either applicaple to the Polish-Russian relations, wchich not always were inflated with animosity and hatred. The author of the article considers the process of Russia and the Russians'negative image forming, defines the most significant events, and uniting and separating factors. In this context the two spheres of influence are meant: political-historical and cultural. In the author's opinion, nowadays the negative image of Russia and the Russians is fixed in mind of the Polish. It is very hard to overcome these prejudices, however there is such a possibility.

The article focuses on the issue of the influence of the historical conditions on the Polish-Russian relations at the threshold of the 21st centuries. The history of these two countries is linked by a long lasting and difficult past and thus numerous unresolved disputes, burdens and myths arose that have been felt to this day. In 1989, after the fall of the Communist system in our country, new political elites managing the process of democratic changes in the Third Polish Republic, made efforts that aimed at settling disputed threads from the common Polish-Russian history. On the way to making up for the past, the period between 2007 and 2015 was marked by a number of important events that could be seen as the symbol of the common reconciliation. Unfortunately, there were also moments of regression and deep crisis that negatively affected the cooperation of both countries in the matter of dealing with difficult cards of the common history.

The article presents an analysis of 140 random lexemes of Greek and Latin origin excerpted from Słownik kieszonkowy polsko-rosyjski i rosyjsko-polski [Pocket Polish-Russian and Russian-Polish Dictionary] edited by I. Mitronova, G. Sinicyna and G. Lipkes. The corpus is, according to lexicographers and linguists, an effect of mutual influences of Polish and Russian languages. The opinions on origins of words differ among researchers, and the article attempts to verify the previously accepted judgements by M. Vasmer, W. Witkowski and Z. Rysiewicz, based on informations included in monographs by D. Moszyńska, H. Leeming, S. Kochman, and in historical dictionaries of both languages. With reference to almost 75% of the analysed material, the direction of loanword acquisition proposed by Vasmer, Witkowski and Rysiewicz has been confirmed. However, for about a quarter of the random sample of words, the accepted opinion is not confirmed by more recent historical dictionaries, nor by the lexical material provided in the monographs. The article proposes new results for the direction of loanword migration in this group of vocabulary.
