Opis:
This paper deals with the subject of traditional sports and games (in international literature also called TSG) and the possibility of using them in the contemporary museums’ activities. The author starts with a short description of the significance of sports, games and plays in the history of mankind and the difference between ritual plays and spontaneous games of the past and the contemporary, professional sport — typical for modern times and associated with globalization. Then attention is paid to the particular form of sport — traditional sports and games (TSG) — and their meaning as a cultural reaction to the global threats of homogenization, also visible in modern sport. He also explains why we should protect and promote these sports and games. In the main part of this paper the author aims at indicating the potential and the examples of practical use of TSG in the museum context — as an important part of the intangible cultural heritage, museum education and museum cultural tourism. Then, he describes the selected examples of museums and other institutions in which TSG are used in the described contexts. Finally he focuses on the particular institution — the Museum of the First Piasts at Lednica in Poland, describing the selected examples of putting traditional sports and games in practice there and treating them as an important part of this Museum’s offer.

Opis:
This synthetic article presents reflections concerning the oldest windmill — a windmill on the Polish land, i.e. a post mill (‘koźlak’) from Gryżyna (Kościan municipality, Wielkopolskie voivodeship), which was moved from Gryżyna (fig. 2 and 5) in 1964/1965 to the Museum of the First Piasts at Lednica, and its so-called ‘small skansen’ area. In 2017 the funds from The Ministry of Culture and National Heritage allowed a thorough preservation and renovation, and a post mill regained the look from the 18th and 19th centuries (fig. 9). On this windmill’s crown tree a 1585 date (fig. 11, 12) and Latin inscription [ADI]VTOR ET PROTECTOR MEVS ES TV DO[M]I[N]E; signum G, a Latin cross and a carpenter’s sign (fig. 11, 12, 17) were inscribed. The second date was inscribed on a tail beam — 1792 (fig. 14). In order to verify these dates, a dendrological research of an oaken main post (vertical axis) and east and west pine quarterbars was conducted. A broader historical and genealogical research, which unequivocally confirmed 1585 as the time when the windmill was built and its renovation in 1792, was also conducted. These two events were independently credited to the people who accomplished them. The windmill was built in the times of Łukasz Gułtowski and his son Wacław, while a renovation from the 18th century was conducted aft er Gryżyna was bought back by the Wierusz-Kowalski family. A beautiful Latin inscription, which is a paraphrasis of the 27(28) David psalm, gave the windmill under God’s protection (fig. 17). In the context of the content of this inscription, a broad symbolism of the windmills was illustrated in this study.

Opis:
In the introduction, this paper refers to two previous actions aimed at extracting dugout boats from the bottom of Lake Lednica (in 1960 and 1982). The main part of the text presents the third action, carried out in 2016 by underwater archaeologists and students from the Department of Underwater Archaeology, Nicolaus Copernicus University. The paper explains the subsequent stages and procedures of investigations. All the difficulties and complications that arose from the circumstances of the deposition, the raw material from which the boat was made and the size of the object are emphasised. As shown by the 1997 study, the boat is made of wood from the lime tree. The boat is now 930 cm in length and 86 cm in width. The bow looks like a slightly oval pyramid; the stern was formed in the shape of a small overhang and could have been about 1 m longer. The dugout has three bulkheads: the first is the same height as the sides, the second one is shorter than the sides by about 6 cm and the third, formed stepwise (?), starts at the same height as the starboard and keeps this height to the crack, after which it is gradually lowered, going down about 5 cm below the port. The average thickness of the starboard is 5.5 cm, while the port is 4.5 cm thick. The thickness of the bottom at the stern break, ranges from 4 cm to 8.5 cm; in other breaks, it reaches as much as 19 cm. The dugout boat is poorly preserved. It has at least nine transverse cracks and one longitudinal crack ending at the first bulkhead. Part of the damage dated certainly back from the period of the destruction of the bridge; however, a thin layer of sediments covering the side or bulkhead wood did not protect the dugout from the anchors of modern fishing boats. The boat was dated using the C14 method (680 ± 120 BP); calibrated, this points to a very wide range of dates, between 980 and 1454. However, a stratigraphic analysis indicates that the boat fell to the bottom sometime between the period the bridge was completed (964) and the last major repair of the bridge captured by dendrochronological analyses (1023). The first stage of the action consisted in the underwater exploration of the bottom deposits with a water-type ejector. This was used for removing the sediments filling the inside of the boat and those within a belt of a small width on the outside of the sides of the dugout, so that they were clearly visible to a height of approx. 10 cm. The boat was filled with a layer consisting of a large number of strongly compacted chips, which produced a few artefacts: 11 potsherds, five bone fragments and a handle of a wooden cup that was preserved in two fragments. After the whole boat had been cleaned, underwater measurements were taken, which enabled the detailed drawing documentation of the dugout in situ. The second stage consisted in cleaning the area outside the boat with 25–30 cm wide and approx. 40 cm-deep trenches running along both sides of the boat and below them. The sides were cleaned gradually, in 2 m long-fragments, to prevent uncontrolled suction of the boat from the bottom and to reduce the possibility of accidental damage. After completing the exploration of each fragment, separated from the others with natural cracks, the released parts were slipped onto a properly prepared tin ‘trough’, surfaced using a buoyancy balloon and transported close to the shore. In the third stage of the campaign, special frames were prepared for each of the nine elements. After the individual parts had been put on the frames in water, they were brought to the surface with them, secured and transported to the Conservation Laboratory in Toruń. After completing all conservation and reconstruction procedures, the dugout boat will be made available to visitors at the Museum of Polish History in Warsaw.

Opis:
The following article is devoted to vexillological research and conservation aspects of the 20th-century veterans’ banner of the Insurgents and Warriors Society (TPiW) from Zdziechowa against the background of the regional tradition of the Wielkopolska Uprising. The work has three objectives. The first is the verification of archival materials, placed in the historical context of the battle of Zdziechowa and the development of the Insurgents and Warriors Society (the history of its establishment, the assumptions adopted and the figures of veterans). The second – identification of the kind and type of banner, its construction, and the technique and technology of its manufacture, together with the determination of the state of its preservation and the indication of the causes of the damage it has received. In addition, an attempt was made to determine the provenance of the banner, its dating, and to identify the manufacturing plant (workshop) in which it was made. The conducted study involved scientific consultation, research of source materials, as well as comparative analysis of analogously dated objects. The obtained results of the formal and content analysis and their interpretation constitute the content of this article.
