Incorporating aquatic motifs into his novel Pathologies, Zakhar Prilepin ascribes different functions to them. Firstly, in ‘Chechen story’, water takes the form of rain that constitutes an ordinary, thought irritating, atmospheric phenomenon. However, when the young protagonists fight under siege in Chechnya, water acquires a symbolic meaning, becoming a dire portent of death. In the final scenes, set in Chechnya, water changes its connotation and saves the survivor Russian soldier’s lives. Besides, water plays in Prilepin’s novel (Epilogue) the role of catharsis: it is the river’s water where the author is reborn and ‘baptized’ so that soul was purified of the past sins related to upbringing and care for his adoptive son.

Opis:
The article describes the heraldic motifs of Lviv in poetry and historiographical works of J.B. Zimorowic. It’s goal is to explain by what means, why and what for they are used by the poet. The important factor is an allegorical tradition of the bucolic, which heraldry is a part of. The author quotes and discusses poems and inscriptions by Zimorowic, known only through his work Leopolis [...] obsessa, that was originally placed on the gates of the Lviv (including emblems). Zimorowic had a deep knowledge of the history and coat of arms of Lviv, as he was a great admirer of the city. During his lifetime he was recognized by readers and residents of Lviv as familiar and local poet. The references to various aspects of Lviv that appear in his works are part of an overall strategy (poetic as well as lifetime one) – by writing about his family and local matters he hoped to improve Lviv.

The role of coins is not limited only to a means of payment, but through the various iconographic and epigraphic contents they contain, coins are also a means of cultural communication. The obverse and reverse of coins are a specific form of image, which includes motifs understood as a repeating decorative element that is also a pattern or an iconographic element expressing specific symbolism and themes. Archaeological motifs reflect archaeological monuments or their elements, and their themes commemorate not only the monument itself, but also related aspects studied by archaeologists, e.g. the broadly understood context. The aim of the considerations was to examine the numismatic form of commemorating and popularizing archaeological heritage on the example of selected motifs referring to monuments of Mediterranean archeology appearing on European coins in the years 1990–2005. First, the motifs were analyzed in terms of the form of their depiction on coins, then the archaeological theme with which themotifs were connected was determined and, on its basis, axiological considerations were carried out, the aim of which was to learn a potential answer to the question – why a given motif was placed on a coin.

The analysis of Leśmian’s poem Ręka (from the collection of poems entitled Łąka, 1920) leads to distinguishing certain features of the poem that make a connection of the poem with literary expressionism feasible. The above similarities can be testified not only by distinct macabre motifs but also a very peculiar way the narrator constructs his narrative that can be concluded as an attempt at establishing a particular bond between the protagonist and the reader. Works written by the Poznań based expressionists Stanisław Kubicki and Józef Wittlin provide the appropriate context for the poem.

This draft is a record of the aesthetic and creative experiences associated with the Bug River. The author, who is a painter himself, proves that the oil technique is unique in terms of the possibility of achieving an effect of a flowing water. In the faint panes of the river you can see unusual emanations of light and improbable, delicate traces of distraction of its action. This unreal water structure of the Bug River is always vertical. For an oil painter, it is an important inspiration to reflect that rhythm of water in a suitable pattern of canvas paint, using its consistency, thickness, texture.

The paper concerns Zuzanna Ginczanka’s floristic signatures (trees, flowers and fruits), which are used by the poet to construct literary tropes. It shows how, by means of these signatures, the following oppositions are introduced: life/death, surface/depth, outside/inside, form/substance, phenomenon/essence. The crux of the argument is that in Ginczanka’s poetry there is a conflict concerning the value of phenomenology, i.e. what is really important: the phenomena (trees, flowers, fruits) or the hidden essences („the Questions of Root”)? I go on to argue that the poet’s thinking corresponds to Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy, in which the subject’s experience is considered to be related to his life environment and the philosophy of the body is identified with the phenomenology of perception. Emphasizing „the Questions of Root” in the very title of the paper indicates what is most problematic for Ginczanka and, at the same time, what determines her recognition of poetry as an expression of unattainable desires.

Opis:
Many of biochemical paths and processes require some metal ions to occur. There are also known the negative effects of the presence of metal ions in the organism. The both sides of metal ions interactions on the living organism require specific regulations and cannot be left without supervision and control of the organism itself. One of the strategy to keep the control on metal ions are cystein-rich proteins that play crucial role in detoxication of metal ions that are dangerous for human organism as well as they help to maintain homeostasis of essential metal ions. Matallothioneins are one of the well known, but still not fully understood, cysteine- rich proteins. They are small proteins but may contain up to 30% of cysteine residues in the sequence, and what makes them very special from chemical point of view - all of the thiols present there are reduced [1]. This property makes these proteins very tempting for coordination of various metal ions. The most efficient binding to metallothionein is observed for the ions belonging to a Group 11 and 12. Cu+, Zn2+ and Cd2+ represent these metal ions [2]. Besides of the lack of disulfide bridges, metallothioneins show also the absence or low amount of aromatic amino acid residues in the sequence [1]. Studies of the metallothioneins and their isoforms among different organisms show that the position of cysteine residues is very conservative [3]. Considering this aspect of metallothionein structure, some specific motifs of cysteine residues arrangement can be found in the sequence of these proteins. Most of the common polythiol motifs are CXC, CXXC, CXXXC, CC – where C is a cysteine residue and X is random α-amino acid residue (other than cysteine) [3–5]. The influence of the cysteine residues organization on the specificity of metal ions binding was intensively studied. The differences observed for specificity of metal ions binding by metallothioneins and selected polythiol motifs are reviewed in this paper – with strong emphasis on the effect of the cysteine residues topography.
