A light-hearted lecture in the text of Metaphysics: Two chapters 7 and 8 of Book 7 in Metaphysics contain notes from three lectures on the topic of generation. At the beginning, a couple of remarks are made on the theme of biological procreation, which is taken up again in the repeat lecture summed up in chapter 9. This lecture is given in a light-hearted form, with sometimes frivolous allusions to the matter of sex. If one does not take into account this aspect (as it is usually done), the text becomes unintelligible.

The paper offers a sketchy reconstruction of axiomatic foundations of Zalta's theory of abstract objects. The theory is based on Ernst Mally's distinction between two types of predication: an exemplification of properties and an encoding of properties. The author shows how the theory in question could be used to reconstruct in a satisfying way many other metaphysical theories e.g. the theory of Platonic Forms, the theory of situations, the theory of possible worlds. The paper also provides several critical comments to some presumptions and consequences of the analyzed metaphysical doctrine.

At the time of the arrival of the computer age, contemporary people have acquired a common virtual reality designed for a huge number of explorers at the same time. Virtual space and cyberspace gave man and his senses access to a new dimension of human functioning, new virtual worlds that one can navigate. In networked functioning, however, the human body loses its importance, becoming mainly a tool for computer service and a stimulus receiver. A big question arises: What will this new posthuman be? What will culture and its foundations be then? What meaning will faith in God have? How will great metaphysical questions be resolved?

Opis:
The aim o f this article is to look from an existential point of view at the metaphysical argument from language to reality. The main questions are as follows: does language reflect the structure of reality? or is it rather a tool that enables us to perform certain actions, like the action of proving a thesis? and can we, by investigating the nature of language arrive at truths about extralinguistic reality? Those issues are taken up with respect to insights gained by Parmenides, Wittengenstein and Barańczak, a contemporary Polish poet and translator. For Parmenides language is not an autonomous domain but is conjugated with external reality, so by discovering the rules that govern the attribution of meaning to linguistic utterances we can reach beyond phenomena towards the nature of the world as such. Contradictory statements are then seen to result from the aspectuality of particular accounts, whereas in being conceived in its entirety there is no self-contradiction but only degrees of properties. Parmenidean metaphysics is of interest to us here in connection with his concept of the relationship between a word and its referent, whereby it is possible to infer the essence of the thing picked out by a word from the established rules of its correct usage. Ludwig Wittgenstein is a philosopher whose impact on thinking about the metaphysical consequences of language is not to be overlooked. His position concerning the very possibility of metaphysical claims splits into two standpoints, expressed in his two basic works: Tractatus logico- philosophicus and Philosophical Investigations. Tractatus is Parmenidean in its presupposed isomorphism between the structure of language and the world, as well as in assuming that the substance of the world determines the logical space of all possibilities and that it is eternal and unchangeable. On the other hand, however, we do not have an access to the comprehensive state of things denoted as «the world» in its material mode, and therefore we have no basis for deciding which metaphysical statements are its true formal representations. That is why on the level of logic people can arrive at mutually exclusive metaphysical claims, as shown by Plato in the ending of his Parmenides. In Philosophical Investigations Wittgenstein considers, among others, the role of prototypes in the process o f transmitting/learning the meaning of words whereby the objects of experience can be categorized. He also reflects on language as an act governed by autonomous rules which are accepted by users, a theory which he called language games. What underlies both these issues is the question of an element o f identity between language and extralingustic reality. The answer that this element consists in the logical form of an utterance whereby reality is supposed to be mapped by a sentence becomes problematic in the light o f the discovery o f the ambiguity of an image when it is placed in two different contexts that contain different prototypes of reference for the sign under consideration. In reading a particular notation as a mapping of a specific state of things, one’s knowledge of the rules of notation plays an important role as it enables one to recognize the content that one already knows. The rules that impose interpretation on reality constitute a broadly understood grammar. They are autonomous relative to reality so when we utter a sentence the words obtain their meaning depending on how they are used. This does not translate into a referentially understood meaning, because what turns out to be important is the sense of the word, i.e. the way in which it is used by the speaker. Self-aware poetry seeks sense in links between the word and the world, not just within the domain of language itself. Conscious of grammatical rules, it employs them as a tool in overcoming the autonomy of language. This approach is analyzed on the example of an essay on the essence of poetry titled Tablica z Macondo [The Macondo License Plate] by Stanisław Barańczak. He talks in it about a personalized license plate he would devise for himself in order not to forget the most vital truth that enables him to navigate his life. Such a plate would read in Polish ON JEST [HE IS], where - owing to the specificity of the Polish grammar - the third person masculine singular pronoun can stand for the reader (or more generally “the other”), the world, and God (or transcendence). The intended ambiguity of this pronoun makes us realize that although pronouns are substitutes for the noun phrase in a sentence, they are in fact a sort of mental abbreviations that encapsulate more abundant content than a mere 1:1 correspondence with a single noun. Of the two basic functions of pronouns in interpersonal communication: anaphoric and deictic, the latter proves to be more basic as it introduces new objects into the universe of discourse shared by the participants of a conversation. One cannot speak about the meaning o f the pronoun «he», but about the sense in which it is used, and this sense pertains to extralinguistic reality indicated directly by the speaker. The sentence HE IS does not tell us anything about reality unless reality itself is included into the utterance as one of its constituent elements. The triple encounter (the other, the world, transcendence) spelled out by Barańczak in terms of an inclusive unity of experience represented by a single sentence is a manifestation of the metaphysical.

Opis:
Plotinus’ mysticism is a controversial field of study. While some scholars see in it the essential aspect of his system, others consider it to be of little importance. Interpretations of the “mystical union” with the One also differ from monistic to theistic, and the debate seems to be far from an ultimate conclusions. This paper is an attempt to find a different approach to this problem, namely, by examining relationships between contemplation (which appears to be a more useful term than “mystical experience”) and knowledge in the system of Plotinus. It is suggested that the two main types of contemplation are “noetic” contemplation, which is a paradigm for knowledge and derives from Plato’s and Aristotle’s account of noesis, and “hypernoetic” contemplation which is a borderline phenomenon for ancient philosophy, because it is a state of beatifying unknowing. While noetic contemplation is more typical of Western philosophy, hypernoetic contemplation is a phenomenon similar to what Eastern mystical religions strive for. Even though Plotinus’ philosophy seems to incorporate an experience that is central to the Eastern thought, the author of the Enneads remains a profoundly Western thinker, trying to put the state of contemplative unknowing in the context of intellectual, rational pursuit of truth and happiness.

The article is an attempt at philosophical reflection on the possibility of rational justification of religion and its place in today’s world by recreating Leszek Kołakowski’s intellectual path to the Absolute as a guarantor of the value and its apology of Christianity in this context. Following the movement of thoughts in works from Religious consciousness and The Church Bond through The Presence of Myth to Main Currents of Marxism, the author shows how Kołakowski came to the position that faith is an inalienable element of the human condition; we cannot believe it at all, only the objects of our faith can be different. Analyzing Kołakowski’s texts, taking into account their chronology, it can be seen that from the perspective of Marxism he tried to capture the essence of religion, while studying religion allowed him to see the features of religious thinking in Marxism. As a consequence, he noticed that faith, next to reason, is an indelible way of our knowledge, and the myth can be removed only by replacing it with another myth. The climax of this thinking seems to be Horror Metaphysicus – according to his own declaration – the opus magnum of Kołakowski. The author argues that the entire apology of Christianity, which dominates in the late philosophical activity of Kołakowski, should be understood in this context. The paper also shows why we should defend Christianity – even if, according to the author of The Presence of Myth, is one of the myths – as the best combination the individual and social dimension of our existence.

This paper attempts to demonstrate that the conviction about the harmony and order of the world was a fundamental metaphysical principle of the Pythagoreans. This harmony and order were primarily sought in the structures of arithmetics, yet following the discovery of incommensurable magnitudes (irrational numbers, as we now call them), the Pythagoreans began to see geometrical structure as a fundamental part of the world. On the example of the Pythagoreans’ metaphysics and science, the paper shows the mutual relations between metaphysics and science. It demonstrates—on the one hand—the necessity of the first as a guide for the latter, and—on the other—how our scientific research can change its basic metaphysical principles when these are found to be inappropriate. The paper also tries to show the need for a realistic approach in our scientific research by means of the same example of the Pythagoreans, that is, the need to discern something which is below the surface appearance.

Opis:
In his last book, Piotr Stanisław Mazur deals with the problems of classical metaphysics, trying to update, extend and authenticate it, especially in relation to philosophical anthropology, which would be built on its foundations. This interest in metaphysics as knowledge of the totality of reality examined in the aspect of an existing being has several reasons. The most important of these include the contemporary critique of classical metaphysics and the more and more frequently raised questions about how to understand the reality of existence. In his latest book, Mazur attempts to defend Thomistic metaphysics by pointing to its new, cognitive possibilities related to the foundations of anthropology. It formulates a number of questions about human existence, and more specifically what is the specificity of human existence and what characterizes it.

Opis:
On 20th of October 2009 died Leszek Nowak, one of the most creative and original Polish philosophers. Born on 7th of January 1943, Nowak studied law (Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań) and philosophy (Warsaw University). He lived to philosophize. It is not a conventional phrase but the true description of his activities. He devoted his live to philosophy. He got professor’s title in 1976, at the age of 33. At that time he was the youngest professor in Poland and the author of the methodological conception – the idealizational theory of science. His theory was inspired by ideas he found in Marx’s writings. He made them explicit and precise by using the language of contemporary logical philosophy. The result was the theory that offered a new, detailed and systematic picture of science [10], [18]. Leszek Nowak admired Marx’s ideas and planned to reconstruct Marx’s entire philosophical system. It soon occurred to him that Marx’s social philosophy was unable to account for the functioning of the societies of so-called real socialism. Nowak retained Marx’s materialism but rejected the narrow, economic view of society. In 1977 he started to work on a new, generalized social theory, which he called the non-Marxian historical materialism [12]. In this theory real socialism occurs as the most oppressive system in the history of the hitherto known societies. One has to be bold or naïve to work on such a theory in the country of real socialism. Leszek Nowak was aware of the risk but he did not decide to accept intellectual compromise and in 1979 disseminated the typescript of his book on real socialism. During the time of Solidarność movement he spent all energy to educate union members and to reveal the oppressive nature of socialism. He was interned on 13th of December 1981 and spent a year in jail. In 1985 he was expelled from the university and in 1989 his professorship was reinstated. Extremely hard work, engagement in the Solidarność movement, and protests during internment seriously undermined his health. In the last years Leszek Nowak was not able to teach but he painstakingly worked on his new love – metaphysics. Results of his research were published in Polish in three volumes [16], [19], [20]. In our view his conception represents a non-standard approach to metaphysical problems. In Polish philosophy Nowak’s metaphysics can be only confronted with Roman Ingarden’s The controversy over the existence of the world. It is our firm conviction that Leszek Nowak’s place in Polish philosophy in the second half of the twentieth century is defined by the following qualities: a bold search for new and original idea, laborious work to present it in a systematic way, readiness to defend it against petrifying tendencies be they scientific, political, religious or ideological.

Generally speaking, one can distinguish the following approaches to the question of the mutual relationship between physics and metaphysics: (1) both these domains are on equal footing, (2) physics is subordinated to metaphysics, (3) metaphysics is subordinated to physics. In the second half of the 19th century the fourth approach appears, namely an attempt to create a metaphysical system based on scientific results. The system created by the Russian philosopher N. Losski belongs to the latter category. In his view, the so-called substantial agents are fundamental building-blocks of the entire reality: from elementary particles to living organisms. Losski believed that his system could help solving some scientific problems. His ideas are similar to those of Leibniz and Whitehead. Opis:
Kolejna związana była z realizowaniem idei metafizyk szczegółowych i stosowanych w oparciu o narzędzia poznawcze metafizyki ogólnej w  podstawowych naukach filozoficznych (filozofia religii, antropologia filozoficzna i filozofia Boga).
The article is an attempt to present the philosophical achievements of Marian Jaworski in terms of the basic method and direction of his thoughts as well as the most important ideas. These ideas are particularly present in his last book, which constitutes the third volume of his work, in which the vast majority of his most recent articles are included. They are a testimony to the way he understood philosophy and the problems it raises. They are also the most persuading sign of the process of evolution that took place in his scientific life. It is evidenced by the existence of three, quite clearly outlined, phases in his philosophical research. Each one is distinct from another in terms of prevailing methodology used, and the philosophical questions which had been raised. The first phase of his philosophical investigations was connected with general metaphysics. The second one was related to the application of the ideas of special and applied metaphysics on the basis of the cognitive tools of general metaphysics in the main philosophical disciplines (philosophy of religion, philosophical anthropology and philosophy of God). The third one, however, was expressed in the application of the above mentioned metaphysical ideas in more specialized philosophical disciplines, such as Christian philosophy (e.g. philosophy of prayer, philosophy of consecrated life), and in the philosophy of specifically human phenomena (philosophy of suffering, of humanism and of dialogue).
