Opis:
In the era of universal mathematics education in the civilised world and a general ability to perform calculations, the size of social awkwardness in maths is surprising. Despite the fact that mathematics is considered a vital part of the “rational man power”, a lot of people have a kind of “mathemaphobia” – mainly developed by the school. The specificity of each area of knowledge is the source of the impact of hidden content in different but intersecting areas of an individual. In the social sciences they are more associated with the filtering of information on the wider social relations, while science is an area of cognitive interactions directed towards nature. The teaching of mathematics, as well as other subjects at school, brings a certain message as part of the hidden curriculum.

Opis:
We identify two ways of introducing negative numbers. In the first one, a totally ordered set (L, $\prec $) is presupposed, an element 0 in L is arbitrarily taken, and a number a is negative when a 0. In the second one, a negative number is defined by the formula a + (−a) = 0. From a mathematical perspective, the first method involves the idea of a totally ordered group (G,+, 0,<), while the second one considers the idea of the algebraic group (G,+, 0) alone. Through the analysis of source texts, we show that the first model originates in John Wallis’ 1685 Treatise of Algebra, while the second one comes form the theory of polynomials, as developed by Descartesin his 1637 La Géométrie. In mathematical education, the first model is applied in the overwhelming majority. Still, we identify a theory that applies to the second model. We show how to develop it further and simplify the representation of the operation a + (−a) = 0 by turning the second modelin to a tablet game.

This article is devoted to the Seminar on Applied Mathematics, conducted in 1948-1960 by Professor Hugo Steinhaus in Wroclaw. It is based on the protocols of this Seminar so far not discussed anywhere. Many facts related to Professor Hugo Steinhaus can be found easily in the literature, also in the diary of the professor \emph{Mathematician for all seasons--recollections and notes.} (2016). Steinhaus was an outstanding mathematician. He wrote his doctoral thesis under the direction of David Hilbert at the University of Göttingen. Already at that time, he was interested in applications of mathematics. He also used mathematics as the goal of life in various aspects of economic and social life. During the Wrocław period, when he was running the Applied Mathematics Seminar for people with different professions and interests, he gave the beginning of the Wrocław School of Applied Mathematics. All the problems considered in this Seminar are briefly signaled in the protocols that are presented in the article along with the supplement based on the publication.

The article deals with a beauty of mathematics as a phenomenon, which can be approached both from the aesthetic and intellectual levels. It has been illustrated by the series of photographs which are visual representations of the selected mathematical objects. The aim of the paper is to outline chosen aspects of perception and understanding of the aesthetics of mathematics in the context of photographic exemplification of concepts and patterns. All presented photographs have been taken by the participants of International Photography Competition Mathematics in Focus. The competition is organized regularly since 2010 by the University of Szczecin, Poland. Its popularity is growing systematically, what is reflected in the number of participants submitting their works: in 2010 there were 400 people who participated in the competition whereas in 2015 the total amount of them surpassed 8000. The gallery of all awarded works can be viewed at: http://www.mwo.usz.edu.pl/galeria-prac-nagrodzonych.

The aim of this paper is to analyze Veronese’s philosophical principles of mathematics. He tried to begin the construction of mathematics (geometry) with the concept of the Thinking Subject and the phenomenon of thinking, which is discussed in detail. It is very likely that this idea had an impact on Hilbert’s concept of the Mathematical Subject. Some similarities between Veronese’s view and the intuitionistic thinkers are also shown.

Some new, philosophically inspired, methods of teaching mathematics are discussed in this paper. These methods are implemented and embedded in the virtual environment of learning and exploring mathematics, called officially Archipelago of Mathematics (available at www.archipelagmatematyki.pl). They seem to be effective due to different interconnections between mathematics and philosophy (both historical and contemporary). After describing methodological assumptions, goals, methods and the structure of Archipelago, I present two, designed by me, examples of its contents: (1) quasi-internet chat with the ghost of G.W. Leibniz (on metaphysics, philosophical aspects of calculus, and artificial intelligence); and (2) radio-style interview with a farmer on the mathematical theory of sets and infinity. Presented materials show such a relationships between mathematics and philosophy like: philosophical origin of some mathematical concepts, philosophical implications of some math. ideas and theorems, heuristic function of philosophical discussions in mathematics.

The aims and functions of mathematics education differ depending on the level of education. Moreover, the role of mathematics itself differs depending on the domain of its application. In this paper, we focus on mathematics education in the course of economics studies. Unfortunately, while mathematical methods prove useful in building economic models and the importance is still growing, the mathematics education plays increasingly smaller role in the course of economics studies at Polish universities. In this paper, we present the results of research on determining the significance of mathematics education from the perspective of economics students and graduates, as well as lecturers of economics. We also discuss the problem of how to introduce mathematics courses into teaching economics. We conclude that the mathematical skills of economics students do not meet the prerequisites of mathematics education in economics teaching.

The topic of the article is the role of the mathematical education in the humanistic education (history, history of literature and art etc.). The author underlines the meaning understanding as the fundamental notion of the humanities. The lack of the understanding perspective leads the humanistic education to the superficial knowledge of facts and dates, always incomplete and not very useful for the grasping of the specific world of the human thinking and motivation. Mathematics, as the only pure formal subject in the Polish school educational program (there is no classes in logic in these schools), can provide the student at least with the three important abilities. Namely, mathematics education improves the imagination of the school-boys and girls (starting with the simple summing up and multiplication operations), deduction (as opposite to funding our convictions only on the opinions) and integrity of the knowledge (it is impossible to comprehend the more advanced mathematics theses with no knowledge of the other, more fundamental parts of it; much the same it is impossible e. g. to comprehend the essence of the historical processes without knowledge of the all important elements of them). However, what is needed in the school program in mathematics is some information about the more advanced mathematical theories and its applications to the other kinds of science (mathematics in cosmology, fractal theory, topology), These theories cannot be presented completely on this stage of education, yet can improve the imagination of the young men and help them to recognize the meaning of the mathematics for the understanding of the whole world, its structure and dynamism.

The present essay deals with the problem of how to choose the correct method of doing philosophy of mathematics taking into account the importance of technical mathematical results for philosophical analysis. After a short historical introduction presenting the formation of the present mathematical paradigm, it is pointed out that the current mathematical praxis has, in principle, no connection with philosophical investigations. Two radically different approaches to philosophy of mathematics are outlined. Basing on selected examples it is argued that the correct method of doing philosophy of mathematics should take into account both technical results obtained by mathematicians (which often throw a new light on old philosophical questions) and the autonomy of philosophical method.

The matter under discussion is the methodology of mathematics presented by Bernard Bolzano (1782-1848) in his early pamphlet 'Beitraege zu einer begruendeteren Darstellung der Mathematik' (Prague 1810). Bolzano built, with success, the classical axiomatic-deductive method of nonspacial and atemporal concepts (Begriffe). He abandoned the traditional custom of formulating primitive concepts of deductive theories. Bolzano opposed the traditional conviction that the axioms of mathematical theories should be clear and distinct sentences. He divided the domain of nonspacial and atemporal sentences into the subdomains of objectively provable and objectively nonprovable sentences. In his view, the axioms of mathematical (deductive) theories are only the objectively nonprovable sentences, and each of the objective nonprovable sentences is an axiom of a certain deductive theory. He postulated, at the time when only the (Euclidean) geometry was axiomatized, the axiomatization of all mathematical theories.

One of the main views which appears throughout prof. Pawlak's paper is one initially expressed by Anna Zofia Krygowska, the most influential researcher of mathematics education in Poland. According to this view - the teacher and his preparation, and thus the problems of teaching mathematics, are never "ahistorical" (Krygowska, 1981, as quoted by Pawlak, 2019). In other words, the problems of mathematics education cannot be viewed outside of their historical and cultural contexts. Practically, this means that when we design our teacher training courses, we cannot, e.g., ignore the current scientifc and societal developments and especially the increased use of mobile technologies even for everyday purposes. Prof. Pawlak recognizes this issue and suggests using technology as an aid to motivate students. This brings us to the second overarching view of the paper, namely the importance of motivating students to be involved in mathematics.
