    The paper consists of condensed analysis of four God’s utterances (Judg 2, 1-5; 2, 20-22; 6, 8-10; 10, 11-16) and lines which are their proximate context. In the final part of the paper one finds a juxtaposition of the author’s findings which can be put in the following way: the texts foregoing the pericopes in question and those which immediately follow them are markedly different; their similarity a purely superficial; the lines 2,1-5; 2, 20-22; 6, 8-10; 10,11-16 are characterized by a literary different approach; in view of their content and vocabulary, they are only partially kindred. Probably they were written by different authors and not at the same time. What they have in common is their deuteronomistic composition.

    “Deborah, the wife of Lappidoth, was a prophet who was judging Israel at that time” (Jdg 4:4). Using these words the autor of Judges had presented a new hero of the book to his recipients, readers and to us as well. Such solemn and long „introduction” may surprises for several reasons, including the fact that in one, so short verse have been collected and concentrated almost all titles bound up with the protagonist of the Jdg 4–5. The author of the article tries to explain the meaning of these honorable titles and convince that their application to Deborah is fully justified. The article consists of  three parts. First, the author presents (1) the main problems associated with the dating of Jdg 5 and the relationship of the Song of Deborah to Jdg 4, then he shows Deborah as (2) the judge, and as (3) the prophetess, who became the “mother in Israel”.

    Saga o Samsonie jest oryginalną częścią Biblii Hebrajskiej, w której licznie występują niedopowiedzenia, zagadki i stwierdzenia nie do końca zgodne z prawdą. Kolejni bohaterowie zakrywają przed sobą istotne wiadomości, a główny bohater igra ze swoimi przeciwnikami opowiadając im zagadki. Celem przedkładanego artykułu jest wyszczególnić kolejne elementy, które składają się na narrację o Samsonie i stanowią o enigmatyczności całego opowiadania. Analiza wybranych elementów ma uzmysłowić Czytelnikowi, że tajemniczość sagi o Samsonie nie zależy tylko od zagadek konstruowanych przez głównego bohatera, ale także od relacji pomiędzy jego rodzicami i aniołem Pańskim.
    The Samson saga is an original part of the Hebrew Bible in which numerous understatements, puzzles and statements far from the truth appear. Successive heroes hide important information from one another, while the principal figure plays with his opponents by telling them puzzles. The main aim of this article is specify the successive elements which make up the narrative and which give the story as a whole its enigmatic character. The analysis of selected elements is intended to make the reader aware that the enigma of the Samson saga rests not only on the puzzles constructed by the principal figure, but also on the relationship between his parents and the angel of God.

    Although Shamgar is described as deliverer of Israel in Judg 3:31, all the regular elements in the description of the work of Israel’s judges seems to be lacking there (for example, the official titles שפט or מושיע). In this context the tradition of Josephus (Antiquities 5:197) is instructive here: Σανάγαρος ὁ Ἀνάθου παῖς αἱρεθεὶς ἄρχειν ἐν τῷ πρώτῳ τῆς ἀρχῆς ἔτει κατέστρεψε τὸν βίον (“Sanagaros, the Anath’s son, having been chosen to rule, in the first year of his rule lost his life”). If Josephus’ biblical source was basically the same as the Masoretic Text, he seems to understood the lexeme הבקר of Judg 3:31 as a passive verbal form from the root בקר, in the sense attested in the Qumran scrolls, where the term מבקר means “supervisor, inspector.” Therefore, although the standard formula of assuming the rule is missing there, the consonantal Hebrew text permits one to recognize Shamgar as chief and deliverer of Israelites. He “has been appointed” (הֻבְקַר) to be a “supervisor, chief” (compare αἱρεθεὶς ἄρχειν in Josephus) of Israel.
    Biblijna wzmianka o Szamgarze, synu Anata (Sdz 3, 31), intryguje swą zwięzłością. Uwagę przykuwa brak użycia terminów „sędzia” i „wybawca” w odniesieniu do osoby Szamgara oraz nieobecność formuł powołania na urząd przez Jahwe towarzyszących innym sędziom Izraela. W wyjaśnieniu tej lakoniczności może pomóc tradycja poświadczona przez Józefa Flawiusza (Dawne dzieje Izraela, 5, 197), który pisze, że „Sanagaros, Anata syn, został wybrany, aby rządzić, w pierwszym roku rządów stracił życie”. Użyte przez Józefa Flawiusza wyrażenie αἱρεθεὶς ἄρχειν („będąc wybrany zarządcą”), dla którego brak bezpośredniego odpowiednika w obecnej postaci tekstu Sdz 3, 31, może być przekładem hebrajskiego leksemu הבקר zinterpretowanego przez starożytnego historyka nie jako określenie oręża, którym walczył Szamgar (םלםד הבקר – „grządziel bydlęca”), lecz jako należący do kolejnego stychu, odrębny termin – imiesłów bierny הֻבִקַר z rdzenia בקר w znaczeniu „doglądać, nadzorować”, poświadczony w tekstach z Qumran, gdzie pojawia się słowo םבקר („nadzorca, zarządca”). Zgodnie z interpretacją sugerowaną przez Józefa Flawiusza problematyczny fragment wersetu Sdz 3, 31 można zatem wokalizować i tłumaczyć w następujący sposób: „został wybrany rządcą [הֻבְקַר] i również on uratował Izraela”.

    The story about Jephthah is placed in the middle of the Book of Judges (Judges 10:6-12:7). Therefore we recognise in this figure an important link in the quest for the model of a ruler in the period of pre-monarchic Israel. In order to reconstruct the image of Jephthah as a leader the method of narration has been applied. The narrative programme has confirmed that Jephthah, while seeking to find a solution for the crisis of power, became the paradigm of a ruler. In the light of narrative techniques used by the narrator, Jephthah fails as a paradigm, for he loses his daughter and he is seen by the generation of Ephraim as an unfulfilled ruler. There are three reasons at the source of his unfulfilled power: treating power as a means to satisfy one’s ambition; rejecting power as a service on behalf of the good of his subjects; eventually, no roots in the tradition, history, and religion of the fellowship in which is he to govern.

    Epokę Samuela poprzedziły czasy Sędziów, które ukazały krytyczny stan polityczny plemion Izraela w tamtych czasach. Powołanie przez Boga Samuela (1 Sm 3) rozpoczęło nową erę dla narodu wybranego. Eli, sprawując urząd sędziego i najwyższego kapłana, nie był w stanie zagwarantować jedności rozproszonym plemionom. Porażka w walce z Filistynami i utrata Skrzyni Przymierza dopełniły miary nieszczęścia. Po dwudziestu latach życia w ukryciu Samuel wkracza na scenę historii biblijnej (1 Sm 7,2–13,24). Namaszcza on Saula z plemienia Beniamina na króla i w ten sposób zapoczątkowuje epokę monarchiczną w dziejach Izraela. Obowiązkiem króla było zjednoczenie rozproszonych plemion i stworzenie wystarczającej siły militarnej do pokonania Filistynów lub innych wrogów. Król cieszył się spodziewanymi sukcesami militarnymi, ale użył nadmiernego autorytetu, gdy uzurpował sobie kompetencje kapłana (1 Sm 13,13). Następnie nie podporządkował się heremowi, czyli nakazowi całkowitej eksterminacji ludu i żywego inwentarza Amalekitów (1 Sm 15,9). Takie postępowanie doprowadziło do odrzucenia Saula przez Jahwe, który wybrał innego sługę – Dawida. Samuel, posłuszny Jahwe, potajemnie namaścił Dawida w jego rodzinnym Betlejem na władcę (1 Sm 16,12). Dopóki żył Samuel, Izraelem rządził Saul, ale po śmierci proroka sytuacja uległa radykalnej zmianie. Ostateczna klęska przyszła ze strony Filistynów. Wtedy to Saul został zabity na górze Gilboa. Po śmierci króla władzę sprawował Dawid, który okazał się wybawcą ludu. Misja Samuela została w końcu pomyślnie wypełniona. Udało mu się ustanowić władzę królewską w Izraelu, władzę, która okazała się niezbędna dla ocalenia narodu. Po nieszczęsnym królowaniu Saula nastał złoty czas rządów Dawida. Dawid stał się figurą Mesjasza, który miał przyjść, Jezusa Chrystusa.
    Samuel’s epoch was preceded by the Judge’s times which showed the critical political condition of Israeli tribes in those days. God’s calling Samuel (1 Sam 3) began a new era for the Chosen People. Eli, holding the office of the Judge and the highest priest, was not in a position to guarantee the unity for the dispersed tribes. Failure in the fight against the Philistines and the loss of the Covenant Box filled the measure of misfortune. After twenty years of hidden life Samuel enters the scene of Biblical history (1 Sam 7,2–13,24). He anoints Saul of Beniamin tribe to be the king and thus initiates the monarchic epoch in Israeli history. The king’s duty was ti unite the dispersed tribes and to create a sufficient military force to defeat the Philistines or other enemies. The king enjoyed expected military successes but used undue authority when he usurped the competence of a priest (1 Sam 13,13). Then, he disobeyed the herem, i.e. the demand to exterminate totally the people and live stock of Amalekites (1 Sam 15,9). This conduct led to rejection of Saul by Yahweh who chose another servant – David. Samuel, obedient to Yahweh, secretly anointed David in his family town, Bethlehem, as the ruler (1 Sam 16,12). As long as Samuel had been alive, Israel ruled by Saul succeeded but when the prophet died the situation changed radically. The ultimate defeat came from the Philistines. It was then that Saul was killed on Mount Gilboa. After the king’s death, the ruling powers came to David who proved to be the saviour of the people. Samuels mission was finally successfully fulfilled. He managed to establish a royal power in Israel, a power that showed to be vital to save the nation. After the hapless Saul’s kingship there came the golden time of David’s rule. David became a figure of the Messiah to come, Jesus Christ.

    The primary narratives in the Book of Judges are constructed aroundthe recurring cycle of apostasy – oppression – plea for divine deliverancethrough the judge (2,10–3,6; 3,7˗16,31). Three times, however, these narrativesare interrupted by brief notices on six additional men who exercisedleadership in Israel during the pre-monarchic period of Israel’s settlement inCanaan (3,31; 10,1-5; 12,8-15). The brevity of the Shamgar, Tola, Jair, Ibzan,Elon, Abdon traditions and their unconventional literary nature within thecontext of the narrative cycles of oppression and deliverance have led criticalscholarship generally to recognize these verses as late insertions. The minorjudges are named in two summary notes framing the Jephthah narratives(10,6–12,7) in 10,1-5 and 12,8-15. Except for Shamgar and Tola, who is alsocredited with saving Israel, these do not seem to fit the pattern of the maincharacters in the book. But this does not mean that these governors playeda less important role than the major judges. The differences in presentationderive from the sources used by the Deuteronomistic narrator (family/tribalchronicles; folk narratives) and his literary and theological concept.

    Opowiadanie o Deborze Sdz 4 zmusza do postawienia pytania o role genderowe jego bohaterek i bohaterów. Choć Debora i Jael przedstawione zostały w tradycyjnej roli żony, to praktycznie cała ich aktywność wykracza poza role przypisywane kobietom, gdyż zajmują „męskie” domeny aktywności społecznej: sądownictwo, prowadzenie bitwy, zgładzenie wroga. Obie postępują nie tylko mądrze, ale i zgodnie z Bożymi, zbawczymi zamiarami. Natomiast męscy bohaterowie zostają ośmieszeni i zhańbieni – umieszczeni w „nie-męskich” rolach jako niesamodzielni, bojaźliwi, domagający się opieki. Ostatecznie, mężczyzna-wódz Sisera zostaje podstępnie zabity ręką kobiety wyposażonej w sprzęty domowe. Opowiadanie to jest zatem genderową krytyką ról przypisywanych płciom, przede wszystkim kobietom.
    The story of Deborah in Judg 4 provokes a question about gender roles of the four main female and male characters. Although Deborah and Yael are shown in the traditional role of a wife, almost all their activities go beyond the gender roles which are attributed to women. They go into “masculine” social domains of activity: judiciary, commanding an army, and killing an enemy. They both act not only wisely, but also according to God’s saving will. In contrast, masculine characters or heroes are exposed to ridicule and humiliated: they are put in “unmanly” roles as dependent, frightened, and in need of care. Finally, the male warrior Sisera is cunningly killed by a woman armed only with household objects. The story is a gender critique of roles attributed to both sexes, especially to women.
