The article treats of the issues of privacy and informality in Cyprian Norwid’s Czarne kwiaty [Black Flowers]. The poet wrote about events from the lives of individuals whose status was public. He wrote, among others, about informal meetings, universalising their meaning. He published the piece in a monthly insert to Czas daily newspaper. A question arises whether Norwid had the right to unveil the privacy of these people. Did he ask them to let him exploit very private moments from their lives? A scene from the drama, where the narrator (the author of Czarne kwiaty) cuts a souvenir drawing from Juliusz Słowacki – he sends one half to Poland and keeps the other to himself – reveals the quintessence of the piece. By cutting the drawing from Egypt Norwid made it into two pieces; at the same time he destroyed a souvenir from Słowacki and, in a certain sense, those things that were the most private in relationships with particular people.

Opis:
Goplana, as a protagonist of Słowacki's Balladyna, seems to be underestimated by literary scholars, when her influence of the development of the plot in the drama is described. The article is supposed to address this issue by starting from an analysis of the figure of the water nymph living on the shore of Lake Gopło, then showing what is left in her of a dangerous demon and how much she is inscribed in the model of the Romantic la belle dame sans merci. It turns out that creating the figure of Goplana Słowacki selected the features of the nymph, choosing the motifs that had already been worked out in literature and intertwining them in new contexts, owing to which he made the comic and grotesque character of the protagonist more acute, and also he pointed to her tragic situation – the world, in which she lived, did not accept her existence, which may be treated as one of the reasons why the demonic nature that a water nymph should have faded away. The consequences cannot be overestimated. Relieved of the burden of a nymph's duties she “disturbs people's actions”; in the article an attempt is made to show how and why she does it.

Characterizing the phenomenon of religious, spiritual, gnostic exclusivity, Stanisława Hausnerowa recognized that it is a manifestation of a centuries-old tradition of seeking esoteric knowledge that comprehensively describes the nature of reality. Referring to the research of Antoine Faivre, it can be assumed that this type of perception of spirituality represents theosophical esotericism. Wanting to justify her thoughts, the Polish theosophist sought spiritual support, among others in the works of Juliusz Słowacki (1809–1849). Therefore, the aim of these considerations will be to discuss several literary attempts to explicate the spiritual reality that function in the artistic output of the cited romantic poet and to seek to verify their esoteric, gnostic character.

This paper analyses the drama of the prominent journalist of the period of modernism. Antoni Lange's writing includes mainly poetic works, numerous translations, and critical-literary texts. Playwriting consists a small part in the writing of the author of Shelley's Funeral, and it has not been discussed up to now. This text seeks to discuss in detail a work that is little known and not easily available. The author depicts dramatic events, analyses figure constructions, composition, and the style of the work. Wenedzi is a drama that corresponds to Slavonic antiquity; it is full of allusions to legendary and historical events from the history of the Polish nation. In its stylistic aspect, it is exceptionally rich with literary references, hence it is defined as “the museum of motives and quotations.” This study shows Lange's attitude towards the literary tradition, specific imitation of romanticism and syncretism in the approach to the history of the nation.

The article concerns the way in which modernist painter Witold Pruszkowski (1846-1849) drew inspiration from the poem Anhelli (1837), a work of the romantic poet Juliusz Słowacki (1809-1849) treating on the fate of a group of Poles in Siberia, political exiles after the Polish-Russian war (1830-1831). The research shows that the painter refers to Anhelli to query about identity, individuality, belonging to the tradition, as well as about the purpose and the sense of art. In Pruszkowski’s paintings the space of the poem becomes a paysage intime, an inner, emotional space. The painter brings out the symbolic potential of the poem and concentrates on imaginative, colourful aspects of the romantic work. The main imaginative themes of his paintings cross the border between the human world and what lays beyond it, referring to such topics as death, ghosts and mysterious landscapes (downs, dusks). The world of the Anhelli poem becomes an integral part of the whole work of Pruszkowski.

The author interprets a drama by Juliusz Słowacki Samuel Zborowski as a theatrical score. Putting it in the context of William B. Worthen’s theory of drama as an interface, Erika Fischer-Lichte’s understanding of performativity and Dariusz Kosiński’s concept of a scenario of the prepared experience, author concludes that Samuel Zborowski is a perfect example of theatrical score. Using contemporary performances as test cases, the author proves the performativity of the text and explores the relationship between literature and theatre. The changing performance technologies revive the text and enable the spectators to go through playwright’s experience.

The article reinterprets the two poems which Juliusz Słowacki wrote while travelling to the Holy Land. Unlike in previous interpretations, here the author uses the motif of tears to uncover the poems’ emotional value and to situate them in the tradition of romanticism. Other poems from the same period set the interpretative context and anticipate the poet’s spiritual growth. Consequently, the article is yet another attempt to demonstrate the emotive characteristics of Słowacki’s lyric poetry. Moreover, it shows how his works are related to his biographical background.
