The article presents the linguistic features of Historia filozofii po góralsku (A History of Philosophy in Góral) of Józef Tischner. The stories have a generalized, literary spelling, nonetheless the text records many language elements of the Podhale dialect, which the author was an active user. Basing on written language, an analysis shows the phonetic layer of the dialect contained in the text. The author records some features of the dialectal system consistently, others – only partially. An analysis also points out the linguistic nature of the stories. It has been assumed that the text cannot be considered as a transcription, especially a phonetic transcription, a translation or a transformation into the dialect of the inhabitants of Podhale region. The dialect, as a variety of the spoken language, can be expressed in a written form, although it affects the structure of the text.
Artykuł przedstawia cechy językowe Historii filozofii po góralsku Józefa Tischnera. Gawędy mają pisownię uogólnioną, literacką, mimo to zapis rejestruje wiele cech gwary podhalańskiej, której autor był czynnym użytkownikiem. W analizie uwzględniono zawarte w tekście gwarowe wykładniki fonetyczne. Niektóre cechy realizowane są przez autora z pełną konsekwencją, inne – jedynie częściowo. Analiza prowadziła do refleksji nad charakterem językowym gawęd. Przyjęto, że tekst nie może być uznawany za transkrypcję, a tym bardziej zapis fonetyczny, tłumaczenie czy przekształcenie na góralski. Gwara, jako odmiana języka mówionego, może się przejawiać w formie pisanej, choć rzutuje to na strukturę wypowiedzi.

The author attempts to demonstrate the validity of the sacrifice that Edith Stein made of herself, and analyzes the deed by thoughts of Józef Tischner and Emmanuel Levinas, f rom the point of view of phenomenology. The connecting element is the biography of Edith Stein and many analogies from Bible. The main point of the present article is the assumption that the victim Edith Stein was the most important idea of her life.

Work cannot be separated from human life. Nowadays, the concept of work has been usually perceived only from an economic perspective as a factor of production process. Does acquiring the means of livelihood is the only value of human work? No doubt, it is a very basic goal, but not the only one. Besides this dimension, there are many other important aspects of human work. In the first part of my paper, I point out two possible understanding of the phenomenon of human work – an objective and a subjective one. The objective sense has to show haw men reign over the earth (material production). The subjective one emphasizes the dignity of human person (philosophical anthropology and ethics). According to Tischner it would be a mistake to take into account only the objective meaning of work, since the moral sense would have been omitted. In the second part, I will adduce the dangers to the proper understanding of human work which arise when one chooses the wrong concept of man (philosophical anthropology). In the philosophical understanding, work is a derivative of the accepted vision of man. In order to avoid the situation of objectifying of man (problem of reification), we should conceive him as a personal being who crates himself in the process of work. In the final part of my presentation, the phenomenon of work is discussed as a mean of improvement and perfection of human being which is done in cooperation with others. By the means of work man enters into relations with God, with the material world, with others (the social world) and with himself. By the above mentioned means she discovers the purpose of her life.

W twórczości Józefa Tischnera ważne miejsce zajmuje problem agresji. Postacią agresji jest m.in. odwet. Źródłem działań odwetowych jest doświadczenie krzywdy. Jednym z największych wyzwań moralnych stojących przed człowiekiem jest nauczenie się nieodpowiadania agresją na agresję. Zdaniem filozofa zadanie to nie leży poza granicami ludzkich możliwości. W jego realizowaniu pomocna jest filozofia. Ukazuje ona człowieka jako istotę mierzącą się z różnymi problemami, ograniczeniami, cierpieniem. Filozofia Tischnera uczy rozumieć człowieka, zamiast oceniać go i moralizować. Uświadamia, że własny punkt widzenia nie jest jedyny ani ostateczny. Wyjaśnia, że ten, kto atakuje, kieruje się jakimiś racjami, chociaż by ich bronić, posługuje się metodami najgorszymi z możliwych. Jest to człowiek, który cierpi, i dlatego zadaje cierpienie.
The problem of aggression occupies an important place in the work of Józef Tischner. A form of aggression is, among other things, retaliation. The source of retaliation is the experience of harm. One of the greatest moral challenges that a human being has to face, is to learn not to respond with aggression to aggression. According to the philosopher, this task is not beyond the limits of human capabilities. Philosophy is helpful in accomplishing it. It shows a human person as a being facing various problems, limitations, and suffering. Tischner’s philosophy teaches to understand a human being, instead of judging and moralizing them. This philosophy makes us aware that our own point of view is not the only one, nor the ultimate one. It explains that the attacker is guided by some reasons, although to defend them, they uses the worst possible methods. They is a human being who suffers and therefore causes suffering.

Problem zła w filozofii Józefa Tischnera. Artykuł prezentuje różne aspekty zła w filozofii Józefa Tischnera (zło aksjologiczne, zło agatologiczne i zło strukturalne). Podkreślając fenomenologiczne nastawienie badań Tischnera, autor ukazuje zło jako zjawę, która towarzyszy najbardziej źródłowej postaci doświadczenia, jaką – zdaniem Tischnera – pozostaje wydarzenie spotkania z innym człowiekiem. W tej perspektywie zło jako zjawa okazuje się równie źródłowym, jak samo spotkanie, warunkiem zaistnienia dobra i wolności. Pierwotne doświadczenie nie mówi nam bowiem, że coś jest czy też, że coś powinno być, mówi nam natomiast, że jest coś, czego powinno nie być.

In the present research paper I focus on the issues concerned with the perspective adopted by Rev. Józef Tischner in his review of Leszek Kołakowski’s life and philosophical work. I demonstrate – which is the main purpose of the paper – that this perspective is determined by the Tischnerian discovery of the so-called “basic conviction” in Kołakowski’s writings. Such a conviction was of crucial significance for his philosophical apologetics of Marxism as well as his radical criticism of the Church, and communism founded on Marxism. As Józef Tischner poses the question about the “basic conviction,” he proves that in Kołakowski’s philosophy from the beginning it centres around ethical issues, and in particular the idea of human rights. It is in these that Tischner discerns the central theme in Leszek Kołakowski’s philosophy. In this way Tischner paints a picture of Kołakowski as a philosopher of actually one thought which matures in his work at various levels, but above all at the level of understanding of man, religion and the Church.

The paper discusses issues related to funerary rites in the culture of the Podhale region and the concept of soul, as laid out in the highlander dialect by Rev. Józef Tischner, a concept which is closely connected with Podhale culturemes, e.g. music, as well as with mythological themes. The highlanders’ belief about their own uniqueness is reflected in their perception of soul travel, in which soul is endowed with typically highlander properties and heads towards God through the mountains and valleys of Podhale.
W referacie podjęte zostały zagadnienia związane z rytuałem pogrzebowym w kulturze podhalańskiej oraz koncepcją duszy wyłożoną gwarą góralską przez księdza Józefa Tischnera, która ściśle łączy się z podhalańskimi kulturemami, takimi jak muzyka, i motywami mitologicznymi. Przekonanie górali o ich wyjątkowości znajduje odzwierciedlenie w pojmowaniu przez nich wędrówki duszy, która – odznaczając się typowo góralskimi przymiotami – zmierza do Boga ścieżkami wiodącymi przez góry i podhalańskie doliny.

The diary [Józef Tischner] Dziennik 1944–1949. Niewielkie pomieszanie klepek (Kraków: Wydawnictwo Znak 2014) was edited by Marian Tischner and Wojciech Bonowicz and it had been found after father Józef Tischner’s death. He wrote in it about his “biography and the past”. The publication is divided into two parts; the second one starts with his high school education i.e. in 1947. Some of his entries – “confessions about oneself and others” – were coded by the author (excerpts in French and Russian). They present the personality of the author at the age of 13-18 in the difficult time of his youth and adolescence. The diaries are the record of individual memory, they reconstruct the past and are a historical document of the war and post-war time; they also present a subjective and intimate image of the events. The author presents various forms of memory, which were applied by the author of the Diary.

The experience the „Polish August 1980" was met with an interesting reflection and civic engagement on the part of Józef Tischner. This Cracovian philosopher and Catholic Priest is the author of the book „The Ethics of Solidarity". He introduced the concept of solidarity as a moral bond that occurs between people. Its implementation in times of communist oppression was associated with the concept of „bad policy." Tischner believed that in times of restored democracy (good politics) solidarity ties would be easier in practice, which turned out to be more complex. In the later period of reflection Tischner did not seem to appreciate the socio-political aspects of the ethos of solidarity, which would allow for the active participation of State.

The article analyzes essential factors for Józef Tischner’s conception of aesthetic tragedy, namely enchantment and sedution. For Tischner, the aesthetic tragedy takes place in the realm of interpersonal relations. The article describes the discoverer of the beauty as the one who becomes aware of that he cannot appropriate the beauty discovered; nevertheless, he still hopes that there must be a form of persuasion able to convince the beauty to be his possession voluntarily. According to Tischner, the way in which the enchanted and the beauty discovered by him seek to possess each other is the relation of seduction. Seduction, however, by its nature is a paradoxical phenomenon; for it is always associated with the consciousness of a renouncement which is to come. The fact that the artist and his work are doomed to part shows that the aesthetic tragedy is a drama not only of the work, but also of the artist; it is their mutual tragedy which stems from an illusory hope for the overcoming of the irremovable necessity of parting. The act of seduction undertaken in hope for having each other as a property becomes the reason of a parting for participating subjects, a parting which—according to Tischner—is announced in drama as the bane of man.

The article undertakes an attempt to unveil the tragic nature of beauty as present in Józef Tischner’s conception of aesthetic tragedy by reflecting on the aesthetic condemnation of the artist and forms of justification sought by him in the realm of beauty. The performed analysis are focused on the course of aesthetic tragedy, beginning with conditions of its coming into being, through forms of its expression, concluding with its term achieved by the parting of its subjects (the artist and his work of art). According to Tischner, it is possible for the artist condemned by his own work of art to find the way out from the framework of aesthetic horizon and all it contains within itself. The artist can overcome his aesthetic condemnation in two ways: he can either disprove the condemnation and demonstrate its falsehood, or replace the beauty in the structure of “the aesthetic I” with some other high value.

Artykuł omawia cztery różne paradygmaty badań fenomenologicznych, jakie można wyróżnić w filozofii Józefa Tischnera. Każdy z tych paradygmatów w odmienny sposób ujmuje zagadnienie źródłowości doświadczenia fenomenologicznego. Źródłowość tę zapewniać bowiem może: Ja transcendentalne, Ja aksjologiczne, dziejowe Dasein bądź relacja do drugiego człowieka. Wypracowując czwarty paradygmat, oparty na doświadczeniu spotkania (dialogu) z innym, Tischner tworzy podstawy swojej Filozofii dramatu, którą w związku z tym należy postrzegać – co w artykule zostaje wyraźnie wykazane – jako jedną z możliwych wersji badań fenomenologicznych. Specyfika tych badań polega na tym, iż starają się one ująć różnorakie aspekty doświadczeń granicznych, to znaczy takich, w których człowiek doświadcza granic swojego myślenia, działania i odczuwania.

The main purpose of this article is the transposition of the category of „otherness”, which derives from Józef Tischner’s philosophy of man, to the educational grounds and using it to present the relationship between the teacher and the student. The author of this article, basing his conclusions on Tischner’s inspiring idea formed in Spór o istnienie człowieka (The Dispute over Human Existence) and teaching traditions, describes the roles of the student and the teacher in educational process. He indicates the obstacles of dialogue possibilities and, at the same time, he points out the common ground which allows to seek agreement of both parties in school communication. The basis of this agreement is the sphere of axiology opened to exploring the value of „the Other” by searching together for the truth about the world.
Zasadniczym przedmiotem niniejszego artykułu jest transpozycja kategorii „inności” wywiedzionej z filozofi i człowieka J. Tischnera na grunt edukacji oraz wykorzystanie jej dla przedstawienia relacji między nauczycielem a uczniem. Autor tekstu, osadzając swe refleksje na inspirującej myśli twórcy Sporu o istnienie człowieka oraz tradycji dydaktycznej, opisuje rolę ucznia i nauczyciela w procesie edukacyjnym – wskazuje na bariery utrudniające możliwości dialogu, ale jednocześnie na płaszczyzny wspólne, pozwalające na szukanie porozumienia obu podmiotów szkolnej komunikacji. Fundamentem owego porozumienia jest sfera aksjologii otwarta na odkrywanie wartości Innego na drodze wspólnego dążenia do prawdy o świecie.

It is a lively, engaging, polemical reflection on the disputes that took place in the 90s in the Polish social domain. In addition, it highlights Tischner's critical stance towards a religious state, the politicization of religion, and strong right-wing attacks on liberal democracy. It then highlights a project indicating a positive role for the Church in a democratic state. The main task of the Church is to work for towards consolidating democracy's axiological foundation needed for the existence of civil society. In the end it considers the problem of Tischner's involvement in Polish political life, which largely seems to be an obstacle to a reliable description of social phenomena.
