Opis:
The purpose of this article is to present selected sources to the history of Latgale in the years 1561-1600, the earliest period of the membership of the former Livonia to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Currently the records are stored in the archives and libraries of Riga, and Vilnius cities. Latgale, one of the major contemporary historical regions of Latvia, since the late 17th century was called the Polish Livonia, but within the borders of Poland stayed to 1772. The article discusses selected sources stored in the Latvian State Historical Archives (Latvijas Valsts vēstures arhīvs) in Riga and in the External Archives of the City Council of Riga (Rīgas Magistrate Arejais Arhīvs), as well as the National Library of Latvia (Latvijas Nacional Library). Characterized were also fonds stored in the Lithuanian State Historical Archives (Lietuvos Valstybės istorijos archyvas) in Vilnius and the former Wróblewski Library (Lietuvos mokslų akademijos Vrublevskių library) in Vilnius. Moreover, there was discussed the fate of public and private archives and libraries that had in their holdings sources to the history of Latgale in the last forty years of 16th century that within the 19th and first half of the 20th century were dispersed or destroyed. The attention was focused on the selected archives and libraries of Polish-Livonian nobility. Furthermore, there was discussed the holdings and fate of the Daugavpils municipal archives that was almost completely destroyed in the late 18th century.

Opis:
All parties involved in the conflict in Livonia in the mid-sixteenth century, wanted to profit from trade with the East, and strived to control the important strategic and commercial point - Riga. Proposals to surrender and guarantees to keep existing rights were made by envoys of Moscow Tsar Ivan the Terrible, the Danish prince Magnus, the Swedish King Erik XIV and the Polish King Sigismund Augustus. Despite the formal subordination of the Teutonic Order and the Archbishop, Riga led independent and even contrary to the actions of its feudal lords policy. In 1561, Riga did not follow them and did not make a tribute to the king on which Sigismund Augustus and Lithuanians counted. Control of the Daugava was in the vital interest of the Lithuanian nobles, who expected creation of navigable channel of corresponding importance to the Vistula River in the Crown and the increase in exports of raw materials from the northern part of principality. Riga made the submission to the new ruler conditional on a number of stipulations. In addition to the approval of the old privileges and religious freedom for the Lutheran confessions the city of Riga demanded a guarantee of protection against restrictions of the emperor and princes of the Reich, and the subordination of Livonia to Poland, not to Lithuania that was too weak in Riga’s opinion. The necessary guarantees were granted by so called "Cautio Radziviliana prior", issued by the governor of Vilna Mikołaj "The Black" Radziwiłł on September 8th , 1561. These promises were not fulfilled, so the delegation of the city of Riga had not make a tribute to Sigismund Augustus on November 28th, 1561, opposed to its superiors: Gotthard Kettler, and Archbishop Wilhelm and Livonian states. In this situation Radziwill tried to surrender Riga directly Sigismund Augustus. After lengthy negotiations, the city agreed to a "conditional" surrender and an oath of fidelity, which would have been in force only when the promises had been fulfilled. Promises were included in "Cautio Radziviliana posteriori", issued by Radziwiłł on March 17th, 1562. The reluctance of the Crown to engage in the affairs of Livonian, defeat of Lithuanian army and hollow promises caused that the city considered itself to be exempt from the oath to the king. The middle-class opposition was against subjection the city of Riga to Sigismund Augustus. They blocked submission to Lithuania and the King for fear of strengthening the position of the city council, the expansion of the nobility and loss of privileges. They were not so much against King’s sovereignty, as against any strong public authority. As long did the council need support of the guild in adopting contribution taxes for war, the army and the development of the fortifications, as long Riga ran a consistent, separatist politics. It was possible to 1581.

Opis:
Polish Livonia was the little homeland of Boleslaw Limanowski, a socialist and a popular political activist. The author reminisces about it in his Memoirs and in his correspondence reviving the past – both private and the history of the region (his work about Emilia Plater). Limanowski’s statements, because of his highly detailed observations, are the source of the history of the province and character of its customs. They also reveal a private side of the evolution of the author’s views. His accurate remarks connected with the peculiarities of the identities of Poles living in Livonia, especially their relationships with Russians, enabled the reader to think about the uniqueness of the author’s thoughts and his sagacity.

Reformacja

Kościół ewangelicki
Opis:
W artykule przedstawiono okoliczności i uwarunkowania wprowadzenia reformacji w Inflantach w pierwszej połowie XVI w. Rywalizacja ośrodków politycznych o władzę w Inflantach spowodowała nierównomierny i zróżnicowany przebieg rozwoju reformacji w poszczególnych częściach Inflant.
The article presents circumstances and ramifications of Reformation in Livonia in the first half of 16th century. The process was influenced by Livonia’s particular internal situation; it was a confederation of various political bodies, some of those religious in nature (Teutonic Knights Order, the bishoprics) and a number of large cities (Riga, Reval, Dorpat). Other factors important for development of Reformation in Livonia included diverse social (estates-based) and ethnic structure of the territory, with politically and economically dominant German element, that was also the most susceptible to Reformation’s influence. The rivalry between political centres vying for power in Livonia has resulted in uneven and diverse course of Reformation in various parts of Livonia. It developed the fastest, in a fairly tempestuous manner, in the cities, while elsewhere in the country its progress was slower. Due to those factors, Reformation, despite its fairly early introduction to Livonia, took until the second half of 16th century to expand and take root. Due to partition of Livonia between its neighbours (first Lithuania, then Poland-Lithuania Commonwealth, as well as Sweden and Denmark) as well as creation of the Duchy of Courland, as fiefdom to Poland and Lithuania, after Muscovite attempt to conquer Livonia (1558), no single Evangelical Church was established in Livonia. That is why separate churches, subordinated to new authorities, were created in individual provinces of Livonia.

The article presents the state of the diocese of Wenden (Livonia) in the late 16th c. in the light of the correspondence addressed to Marcin Kromer, bishop of Warmia by three Catholic priests: Fabian Kwadrantyn, Andreas Krüger and Erdmann Tolgsdorf. In the years 1582–1598 these priests did active pastoral work in Livonia. Their mission was to support the structures of the Catholic Church, that were being rebuilt by King Stefan Batory and popes after the losses of the period of the Protestant Reformation.

Opis:
The documents registered in the Polish Crown Chancery books (Metrica Regni) are used in combination with other sources in works on the history of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. In this article the approach is different – the analysis is focused on the Crown Chancery documents only. The questions are; how many of the documents, registered in the short period 1587–1591, described the situation in Livland and Kurland (i.e. today Latvia)? What are the main topics of this acts? How was the situation in Livland seen by the chancery clerks and if their view is supported by the modern historiography? The answer is surprisingly positive. About 10% of all registered documents concern Livland and we do get a differentiated view on the subject. This newly acquired province was a place of many quarrels and fights. The officers from Poland and Lithuania had to organize the administration and to placate the old nobility and burghers. The religious differences did not make this task easy, since the king Sigismund Vasa would like to renovate the structures of the Roman Catholic church in Livland. Most of the documents are testimonies of some grants; to the Polish – Lithuanian gentry, to the old Livonian gentry, even to some burghers, who supported the Commonwealth in the struggle with Moscovia. We can conclude that acts registered in the Polish Metrica do correspond accurately with the view on Livland represented by the modern historiography, although the texts are quite laconic and only rarely we can see a continuation of a case in next documents.

Opis:
This article regards ecclesiastical activities in Livonia of eminent Krakovian humanist Andrzej Patrycy Nidecki (1522–1587). In 1582 he was appointed bishop of Wenden (currently Cēsis in Latvia). Lycopolis (Dioecesis Lycopolitan) took Nidecki only in 1585. He found there a complex political and religious situation. Nidecki was surrounded by Protestants, largely of German origin, who were unfriendly to Catholics. He lacked financial resources to effectively manage the diocese. Assistance in rebuilding of administrative structures of the Catholic Church and in pastoral service was given to him by a small group of Catholic clergy. The three of them: Edmann Tolksdorf, Andreas Krüger and Fabian Kwadrantyn, came to Livonia in 1582 by the Bishop of Warmia, Marcin Kromer. Nidecki’s governance over Livonia was short. After two years of his residence in Wolmar (now Valmiera in Latvia) Bishop died unexpectedly. This coincided in time with the death of King Stefan Batory. Then there was a further period of crisis and turmoil in the diocese. That crisis was managed by the next bishop only after a two-year vacancy. The new bishop Otto von Schenking was descended from the local clergy . The proof of episodic activity of Nidecki in Livonia is a tombstone in the old cathedral of St. John in Latvian Cesis (currently the Protestant church) that was renovated recently by the Polish-Latvian conservation services.

Opis:
After the Treaty of Vilnius (1561), the process of gradual inclusion of Livonian nobility to the administrative and political structures of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and later of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth began. With the creation of the Inflanty Voivodeship in 1677, the Livonian nobility of German origin began to Polonise / Lithuaniseand return to Catholicism. The bond between the Livonian families and the Polish-Lithuanianstate began their great careers and political activities at the central level. The participation of “Teutonic” families in the public matters in the 18th century Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was measured through the senate offices and the legations. The greatest number of senatorsin the 18th century came from the Plater family, followed by Hylzen, Tyzenhauz, Zybergs and Grothuz families. Among the Livonian deputies, members of the Plater and Tyzenhauz family dominated, while the rest of the families gained much less seats.

Virtuous Lithuanian published in 1592 by an anonymous author is the first in the Lithuanian historiography thematic collection of historical records published in print. There are posted in it in extenso 9 unpublished before papers concerning the relations of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Livonia in the years 1557–1569. Contrary to the previous assertions the book was not developed by a Samogitian nobleman Chrysostom Wołodkowicz (c. 1591–1642 ), but by Elijah Pielgrzymowski, well-known representative of the Lithuanian literature of the late 16th c., and the great Lithuanian writer. He used the texts of published documents not from the individual copies, but from manuscript called Pamiętnik [Diary], with its authorship credited previously to the bishop of Vilnius Cardinal Jerzy Radziwiłł. A copy of this work is stored at the Czartoryski Library in Kraków (rkps 2180 IV) and was published in print in the late 19th c.; in fact this text is anonymous and without a title, and in the late 19th century was credited to J. Radziwiłł by its publisher – Teodor Wierzbowski, who also entitled the work as “Pamiętnik”. This anonymous work should not be called a diary, but a chronicle. Jerzy Radziwiłł could not be an author of it, as presented in the chronicle events are inconsistent with the facts of his biography. Hypothesis put forward in the article is that this anonymous chronicle was written by Wacław Agrippa (c. 1525–1597), stepfather of E. Pielgrzymowicz, well-known statesman and cultural luminary. This hypothesis explains also how E. Pielgrzymowicz received this source.
