The article discusses various forms and aspects of the conceptualization of war as a tension between the individual and the total. The starting point is the philosophical reflection of B. Miciński, E. Levinas and G.W. Hegel, and then the conception of war as a form of totalizing, e.g. by subordinating it to ideology, nationality and other forms of collective identity, and reducing man to a material or numerical dimension, are presented. War is often described as an autonomous and inhuman force depriving man of subjectivity and agency. On the other hand, the literature analyzed in the article, mainly non-fictional, often focuses on saving individuality through the description of individual stories. Such conceptualizations also appear in reportages about the war in Ukraine.

The article presents problem of social difference and the related mechanisms of exclusion. The paper shows the process how the difference needed in the world is born inequality, discrimination, human suffering, often as unwanted and unintended consequences of group processes. The factor differentiating way to experience the social difference and forms of engagement in reality, is the human identity. The text presents the arguments in favor of the thesis that the difference does not necessarily lead to inequality, and a key role in this process is the identity of the man, with his basic need of recognition. Educational activities are considered an important factor in institutional support in this process. Also shows the process of individualization (the problem of individualism) in the social world as an essential factor in the offending unfavorable balance between an inclusion and social exclusion.

Artykuł jest omówieniem fenomenu osobowości transgresyjnej na przykładzie Żywotów świętych Piotra Skargi. Każdy z bohaterów tego utworu posiada biografię transgresyjną, to znaczy, poprzez swoje życie dokonuje aktu przekształcenia siebie oraz wyjścia (transgressio) poza porządek profanum i przejścia w porządek sacrum. Narzędziem opisu tego fenomenu są pojęcia z zakresu psychologii transgresyjnej. Praca ma charakter wstępu do dalszych badań.
The article discusses the phenomenon of transgressive personality based on the example of Lives of the Saints by Piotr Skarga. Each of the heroes of this work has a transgressive biography, that is, through his life they makes an act of transforming himself and leaving (transgressio) beyond the order of profanity and the transition to the order of the sacred. The notion of transgressive psychology is a tool for describing this phenomenon. The work is an introduction to further research.

At the beginning, the author presents some basic intuitions determining the necessity for philosopher’s reflections on not only numerical singularity, but also individuality. Then he considers briefly four selected types of individuality, namely: anything existing, the universe, a person and the Absolute. Nevertheless, for different reasons, in each of these cases it is possible to assume an impossible to fully express entity, that is, individuality. The next part develops the idea of a person’s individuality which stays directly linked with his or her permanent act of self-creation. The essence of the act would lie in a radical distinction between the person and any other human being as well as in generating the own, absolute personal otherness. At more accurate, largely speculative characteristics of this act it turns out to be necessary to redefine such categories like duty, responsibility, trust.

The article contains interpretations of verses written by Marta Podgórnik during last twenty years (1996-2016). This analysis of Silesian writer’s poetry lead to recognitions of aspects, themes, images, particularites it includes. Podgórnik creates pictures of unsubmissive and indyvidualistic women, which must exist out of main discourses: patriarchal and feministic. But the most important in this poetry is language used for poetic but subversive descriptions of painful experiences, also by using intertextual references.

The text is an attempt to use of Richard Borowicz research as inspiration. The aim is to broaden the perspective of research on the problem of social selection in the education system by adding a psychosocial aspect. The article contains a theoretical reference in order to allow for an explanation of the effectiveness of the mechanism of auto-selection and placement of it in the social practices of everyday life. Interactional perspective makes the problem of social inequalities present in the experience and consciousness of man. On the other hand individualistic tendencies in society are the conditions under which self-selection mechanism can both be forced out from public awareness, as well as subject to deregulation. The latter phenomenon may lead to equal opportunities.

The starting point for this study is the thesis that disability multidimensionally determines human functioning, enhances human uniqueness and is favourable for emphasizing a person’s individuality. This inspires to use a study of an individual case as a method not only of its cognition and description but also its understanding. The method also makes it easier to construct individual concepts of functioning of a person with disability in the jungle of many biological, psychological and social determinants. Moreover, for the researcher – the method may become a valuable source of experience and an inspiration for his/her own (not only scientific) development. To provide justification for this thesis, a survey of case studies is made, with special focus on the authorial typology of didactic (educational) goals – the aims which are usually underrated in scientific works. What follows are the possible typologies of the discussed method and the author’s suggestions concerning the construction of a case study of a disabled person. The text is completed with final conclusions.

Tekst ma na celu zgłębienie socjologicznego namysłu nad rolą „czynnika indywidualnego” w procesie przemian społecznych. Nawiązując do koncepcji indywidualności Jana Szczepańskiego, ukazuje problem społecznej natury człowieka oraz negatywnych konsekwencji procesów grupowych. Nadzieją na przezwyciężenie tych ostatnich jest powrót jednostki do świata wewnętrznego, którego swoistość pozwala na krytyczny ogląd rzeczywistości społecznej. Artykuł zawiera tezę, że indywidualność człowieka, choć bazuje na potencjalnych atrybutach każdej osoby, stanowi zwieńczenie procesu rozwojowego. Jest fazą, w której jednostka jest w stanie w sposób świadomy nie tylko zmieniać własne życie – tożsamość – ale także reorganizować otaczające je środowisko społeczne. Natomiast w kontekście społeczno-kulturowym można uznać, iż kategoria indywidualności jest próbą przekroczenia obecnego dotychczas napięcia między indywidualizmem a kolektywizmem. Dotyczy bowiem problemu relacji człowieka z Innym (innością), w której potencjał indywidualności mobilizuje emancypacyjne dążności obu uczestników owego spotkania.
The paper raises the issue of “the individual factor” in the sociological reflection on social reality. Referring to Jan Szczepański's concept of individuality it analyzes the problem of human nature and the inner world as a source of resistance to the negative consequences of collective mechanisms. The paper presents the thesis that individuality is the culmination of the process of human development. However, in the context of socio-cultural category of individuality, it is an attempt to transcend the current data and the tension between individual- ism and collectivism. Human Individuality is a potential criticism regarding the public order and social change.

The paper attempts to answer the question: how could human individuality be a resource making it possible to cope with the experience of feeling uncertainty and risk? Jan Szczepański’s idea of individuality defines the structure and functions of that dimension of the human condition. It tries to explain the sense of man’s inner world and their reflexivity in struggling with the negative consequences due to the social organisation of collective life. An analytic view of individuality included in this concept allows for revealing the emergency nature of personal identity affected by dialogue between the inner world and the internalised outside world. The discussed concept might increase the attempt to synthesise it with the vision of mindfulness. The effect of it is a unique underlining role of loneliness in the individual process of human development and captures the moral character of individuality (hipo-egoic phenomena).
Tekst jest próbą odpowiedzi na pytanie, w jaki sposób indywidualność człowieka może stanowić zasób pozwalający na radzenie sobie z doświadczanym poczuciem niepewności i ryzyka w życiu codziennym. Wykorzystana w tym celu została koncepcja indywidualności Jana Szczepańskiego, która definiuje strukturę i funkcje tego wymiaru ludzkiej kondycji osobowej. Stara się wyjaśnić znaczenie świata wewnętrznego człowieka oraz jego refleksyjności w procesie zmagania się jednostki z negatywnymi konsekwencjami organizacji wspólnotowego życia. Analityczny ogląd indywidualności w przywołanej koncepcji pozwala także dostrzec emergentną naturę tożsamości osoby, będącą efektem prowadzonego dialogu między światem wewnętrznym i zinternalizowanym światem zewnętrznym człowieka. Możliwości poznawcze omawianej koncepcji pozwala poszerzyć próba jej syntezy z kategorią uważności, czego efektem jest podkreślenie szczególnej roli samotności w indywidualnym rozwoju człowieka oraz uchwycenie moralnego charakteru indywidualności (hipo-egoic phenomena).

In this article, I analyze one of the most interesting confessional works, Religio medici, by Thomas Browne (1642), English physician and thinker. This treatise, written in labyrinthine prose, full of apparent contradictions and paradoxes, is interesting not only as a literary work but also as a philosophical one. I discuss its content in the context of seventeenth-century England's religious and intellectual changes (doctrinal disputes, religious rationalization, the emergence of a new paradigm in the philosophy of nature). The existential interpretation of Religio medici presented in the article shows the coherence of the treatise and reveals the essence of Browne's religious attitude.

The article presents findings of the research on the diagnosis of student types and strategies and techniques of learning preferred by students with very good performance in learning, as well as those with learning disabilities and special educational needs (SEN). Research reveals the occurrence of certain regularities in individual student groups. Students with high learning outcomes are primarily of an intellectual type and prefer visual learning strategies, whereas students with learning disabilities are of an emotional, acting and cooperating type, their learning based on auditory and kinesthetic strategies. Students with special educational needs are of an emotional type. Hence, they most often use auditory and visual learning strategies. In the individual groups, there a marked correlation was observed between the student types and professional preferences. The intellectual type (students with high scores) would like to engage in occupations related to intellectual and artistic work in the future; the emotional, acting and cooperating type (children with learning difficulties) is interested in performing service professions, while the emotional type (students with special educational needs) sees their future in counselling professions.

Celem artykułu jest ukazanie zasadniczych różnic między rozumieniem pojęć kontyngencji, wolności, indywidualności w filozofii Szkota w odniesieniu do tradycji arystotelesowskiej. Podkreślam, że istotnymi elementami koncepcji Szkota, będącymi wyraźnym odejściem od klasycznego arystotelizmu, są: (1) odrzucenie zasady pełności, (2) interpretacja teraźniejszości jako niekoniecznej, (3) rozwinięcie pojęcia synchronicznej kontyngencji, (4) zerwanie związku między niezmiennością i koniecznością. W swej antropologii Szkot kładzie nacisk na (1) pojęcie wolnej woli jako władzy autonomicznej i zdolnej do samodeterminacji, (2) przypisuje woli racjonalność, która nie polega na zależności woli od intelektu czy wiedzy, (3) odchodzi od arystotelesowskiego eudajmonizmu. Boga traktuje jako zdolnego do poznania i miłowania jednostkowych, kontyngentnych bytów. W swej aksjologii podkreśla pozytywny wymiar indywidualności, wielości i niepowtarzalności jednostek.
The aim of the paper is to show the main differences between the concepts of contingency, free will and individuality in John Duns Scotus and in the Aristotelian tradition. I outline the parts of Scotus’s view, which constitute a clear departure from the traditional Aristotelian outlook: (a) the rejection of the principle of plenitude; (b) the construal of the present as contingent; (c) the development of the notion of synchronic contingency; and (d) the separation between immutability and necessity. In his anthropology Scotus emphasizes: (1) the notion of free will as autonomous and self-determining; (2) the rationality of the will, which consists in its dependence on the intellect or knowledge; and (3) the rejection of Aristotelian eudaimonism. God is treated by Scotus as capable of knowing and loving individual, contingent beings. In his axiology Scotus stresses positive aspects of the individuality, plurality and uniqueness of each individual being.

This paper attempts to provide a critical review of individuality theory as proposed by Polish sociologist Jan Szczepanski. It draws attention to the theoretical and methodological assumptions for showing their incompleteness and the need for further additions. A key thread following text are searching for theoretical roots of individuality within the classical and contemporary sociological theory that could fill some of the gaps and give a chance for more thorough understanding of the issues analyzed, which is individuality. The article highlights the importance taken by Szczepanski attempt to go beyond antinomian description of social reality and the distance the relational model, by emphasizing the role of loneliness in a person’s life.

Artykuł zawiera analizę szczegółowych, semantycznych i kompozycyjnych cech miniaturowych angielskich portretów tworzonych w XVI w. Większość z tych dzieł wykazuje się stylistyczną jednolitością, ścisłym przestrzeganiem przez autorów formalnych zasad artystycznych. Porównanie wykazało jednak, iż pomimo ogólnego podobieństwa, wynikającego z ustalonej tradycji i praktyki, wyraźnie są widoczne też różnice w stylistycznym i kompozycyjnym podejściu do portretu. Opierając się na opisie wyjątkowego procesu tworzenia miniatury pozostawionym przez elżbietańskiego artystę N. Hilliarda, można zauważyć techniczne różnice w tworzeniu męskich i kobiecych obrazów. Przytoczone w artykule przykłady wskazują na możliwość zbadania angielskiej miniatury portretowej i jej typologii z pozycji „męskie – kobiece”. Charakterystyczne wyróżniające cechy przejawiają się nie tylko w rysunku i kolorystyce, ale także w stopniu indywidualizacji obrazu portretowego. Program portretu męskiego jest bardziej zróżnicowany semantycznie i świadczy o rosnącym zainteresowaniu indywidualnością u zarania nowożytności.
The article provides the analysis of semantic and compositional features of the XVI century English miniature portraits. Most of these works are characterized by stylistic uniformity, the exact abidance of formal artistic principles by the master. However, some differences in the stylistic and compositional approach to the portrait are clearly visible in addition to the general similarity due to the established tradition and practice. It is possible to note technological differences in the creation of male and female images, based on the unique process of creating miniatures described by the Elizabethan artist N. Hilliard. The article presents examples that show the possibility of studying the English portrait miniature and its typology in terms of “male” and “female.” Characteristic differences are manifested not only in the drawing and color, but also in the degree of individualization of the portrait image. The program of the male portrait is semantically more diverse and indicates a growing interest in individuality at the Early Modern time.
