    The aim of the paper is to present a reconstruction of the constitutive theses of cognitive relativism. The reconstruction is based on some examples of well-known theses and statements that are conceived to be relativistic. I distinguish three constituents of cognitive relativism: 1) the thesis of constructive character of cognition, 2) the thesis of pluralism of cognitive schemes, 3) the thesis of incommensurability of cognitive schemes. The rest of the article aims at, first, proving that Quine's philosophical standpoint is not relativistic as it clashes with the third thesis of relativism. And, second, I try to argue that a relativist may avoid the consequence of agnosticism but, which is not surprising, he/she has to radically reject the idea of the objective truth as the purpose of our cognition.

    The incoherence in judicial punishments, if it exists, may be considered as a form of injustice. The legal system in which the similarly situated cases are not treated similarly may be criticized especially from the point of view of the public understanding the justice idea. The conception of incommensurability of values has a substantial impact on the law application process. Because the judges typically assess cases in isolation, there is no common measure to evaluate the cases and the human way of thinking is category-bounded the judges are susceptible to producing incoherent patterns. However it is believed that if the risk of incoherence is brought to judicial attention, the judges might well be likely to do better, on this count, than non-lawyers (Cass Sunstein, Daniel Kahneman, David Schkade, Ilana Ritov 2001). The article presents an empirical analyses carried out on the judgements that were performed by the unselected group of judges in one of the district courts in Lodz.

Celem artykułu jest charakterystyka relacji niewspółmierności oraz udzielenie odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy problem ten dotyczy pedagogiki, a jeśli tak, to do jakich konsekwencji prowadzi w perspektywie myślenia o statusie naukowym tej dyscypliny oraz praktyki jej uprawiania.

    The text is devoted to the problem of materiality in the perspective of transmedial artistic practices. The object of special interest is the principle of rapprochement between the medium and non-artistic matter, shown on examples of art that intentionally strengthen its relationship with various materials (so-called matter painting), and on the example of art that to a greater extent is subjected to the processes of dematerialization (hyperrealism, conceptualism). In the works of such painters as Antoni Tàpies, Jean Dubuffet, Lucio Fontana turning to non-literary materials leads to an interesting tension / rapprochement between the materials and the medium. It brings a retreat from the idealistic aesthetics and ahistorically treated matter, and opens up to non-antropocentrically captured objects. In the case of Jeff Wall’s post-conceptual photography, the principle of closeness draws attention to the ability of photography to annex various media. Transmediality, as it manifests itself in both Wall’s paintings of matter and his photographs, may be called, after Jacques Rancière, incommensurability.

    In everyday experience mathematics rarely appears to us as a whole, and certainly never as a system in the sense of David Hilbert’s considerations from early 20th Century. Mathematical disciplines seem to be independent and autonomous. We do not see that specific deduction goes beyond particular convention applicable in given discipline. In the late 19th Century this view was shared by Felix Klein and Richard Dedekind. The latter’s work “What are numbers and what should they be?” (Was Was sind und was sollen die Zahlen?) was the inspiration for writing this article. This essay is an attempt to see mathematics not as a building, but as a living organism seeking its explanation.

    The article presents selected problems relevant for the contentious issue of abortion and related discourses indicating that one of the characteristic features of abortion discourse is its mediatization. The author aims to characterize the constraints on abortion discourses and the varied environments in which different types of such discourses emerge. Abortion discourses are sociolinguistically differentiated and may exhibit different styles and modes of expression. Although they share the scope of the subject matter involved as in all cases they are centered on abortion-related problems, the field of discourse in each case is defined by the nature of the communicative situation in which a particular discourse is embedded. All abortion discourses are underlined with particular assumptions concerning the nature of human life and its beginning, as well as the issues of the dignity and liberty of the human person. The author suggests that what really hampers abortion discourses and prevents their participants from reaching a consensus is the fact that people who engage in such disputes are faced with the incommensurability of the values which translate into decisive factors and the final arguments used by interacting discussants. Another problem is posed by the fact that the two extreme positions in the debate are formulated with the use of different styles and registers, which results in the clash of asymmetric discourses. Finally, it is not insignificant that subjectively important values are much varied and that they must coexist with two main sets or “families” of abortion-oriented fundamental values present in the polarised camps.

    Artykuł ten stanowi kontynuację rozważań przedstawionych w artykule „Epistemiczne układy odniesienia a problem interteoretycznej niewspółmierności — część 1”. Wyjaśniam w nim, dlaczego zwolennicy odmiennych epistemicznych układów odniesienia uprawiają naukę „w różnych światach”. Światy te „pojawiają się” w efekcie zmian fundamentalnych przekonań metafizycznych na temat tego, co istnieje. Pokazuję też, że decyzje metodologiczne, na których bazują epistemiczne układy odniesienia, nie są filozoficznie neutralne. Decyzje te swoje raisons d’être czerpią z metafizycznych tez (twardych jąder), które informują o tym, co istnieje. Bez wymiany tych metafizycznych tez nie dokonuje się wymiana decyzji metodologicznych. Zwolennicy różnych epistemicznych układów odniesienia odmiennie postrzegają świat. Przyjmowanie określonej perspektywy teoretycznej nie tylko uniemożliwia niezależną od teorii weryfikację świadectw. Wyznacza też sposób porządkowania faktów. W artykule wskazuję również, że niektóre terminy, jakie wspólnie funkcjonują w ramach różnych epistemicznych układów odniesienia, mają różne znaczenia.
    This paper is a continuation of the considerations contained in the paper “Epistemic Frameworks and the Problem of Intertheoretical Incommensurability — Part 1”. In it, I set out to explain why followers of different epistemic frameworks pursue science “in different worlds”. These worlds “appear” as a result of changes with respect to fundamental metaphysical convictions about what exists. I also show that the methodological decisions on which epistemic frameworks are based are not philosophically neutral. They derive their raisons d’être from metaphysical theses (their respective hard cores) that inform convictions about what exists. Existing methodological decisions cannot be replaced unless those metaphysical theses are themselves surrendered. Followers of different epistemic frameworks perceive the world differently. Accepting a concrete theoretical perspective not only makes any theory-independent verification of evidence impossible, but also determines the way in which the facts themselves are ordered. In this paper, I also show that some terms which are collectively in use in different epistemic frameworks nevertheless have distinct meanings.

    The main theme of this work is the issue of transitional forms of biological evolution in its most well-known version, i.e., the problem of “missing link.” This problem frequently appeared in the deliberations of early Darwinists, but has been completely abandoned by modern evolutionists. The disappearance of the missing link issue from modern biology is often explained by the fact that the long-sought transitional forms have been found. Also this problem is considered to be unimportant, because it emerged as a consequence of the influence of various non-scientific factors. The aim of this study is to identify the causes that led to the change in the perception of the missing link problem. Particular attention is paid to the relationship between taxonomy and the way in which the problem in question was perceived. The philosophical theory of Paul Feyerabend serve to show how this relationship affected the missing link problem.
    W pracy tej podejmowane jest zagadnienie form przejściowych ewolucji biologicznej w jej najbardziej znanej formie, czyli problemu „brakującego ogniwa”. Problem ten często pojawiający się w rozważaniach wczesnych darwinistów, został całkowicie zarzucony przez współczesnych ewolucjonistów. Zniknięcie kwestii brakującego ogniwa z zainteresowań współczesnej biologii tłumaczy się tym, iż poszukiwane formy przejściowe zostały już odnalezione. Sam zaś problem uważa się za nieistotny, gdyż spowodowany niekorzystnym wpływem różnych czynników pozanaukowych. Celem pracy jest wskazanie przyczyn, które doprowadziły do zmiany sposobu postrzegania owej problematyki. Szczególna uwaga zostanie poświęcona relacji taksonomii do sposobu, w jaki postrzegano poszukiwane brakujące ogniwa. Cały zaś problem brakującego ogniwa, jego przyczyny i zniknięcia, jest interpretowany jako wynik przemian metanaukowych, jakie zaszły w trakcie rozwoju taksonomii.

    Artykuł wskazuje na związki między problematyką interteoretycznej niewspółmierności a kontrowersją kumulatywizm-antykumulatywizm. Wyjaśnia też, na czym polega niewspółmierność teorii naukowych i pokazuje, że nazwa „niewspółmierność” nie ma ostrego znaczenia w filozofii nauki. Problematyka interteoretycznej niewspółmierności doczekała się licznych opracowań. Artykuł wykorzystuje tylko jedno podejście. Podejście to z problemem nieostrości pojęcia niewspółmierności radzi sobie tak, że wyróżnia pięć płaszczyzn niewspółmierności teorii naukowych. To narzędzie intelektualne ułatwia również uchwycenie różnic między analizowanymi epistemicznymi układami odniesienia. Problematyka ta jest bardzo rozległa. Jej dokładne omówienie wykracza poza ramy jednego artykułu. Dlatego zdecydowałem, aby przedstawić ją w dwóch artykułach. W niniejszym artykule badam jedynie płaszczyznę metodologiczną niewspółmierności epistemicznych układów odniesienia. Badając tę płaszczyznę, koncentruję się na różnych standardach naukowości i kryteriach ocen wyników badań, o jakich mówią zwolennicy odmiennych epistemicznych układów odniesienia.
    This paper looks at relations between issues of intertheoretical incommensurability and the cumulativism-anticumulativism controversy. It also explains what is meant by the incommensurability of scientific theories, and shows that the term “incommensurability” has a vague meaning in the philosophy of science. Issues of intertheoretical incommensurability have been the subject of many research papers. This article explores just one such approach, which deals with the vagueness of the term “incommensurability” by distinguishing five levels of incommensurability with respect to scientific theories. This intellectual tool also facilitates the grasping of differences between the epistemic frameworks being analysed. The issues involved are far-reaching, and their detailed consideration exceeds the scope of single article. Therefore, I have decided to present them in two separate papers. In this one, I explore only the methodological level of incommensurability of epistemic frameworks. While exploring that level, I focus on different standards of what counts as scientific, and on criteria for evaluating research outcomes of the sort advocated by followers of the different epistemic frameworks.
