His-tags are specific sequences containing six to nine subsequent histydyl residues and they are used commercially in immobilized metal affinity chromatography (IMAC) as molecular ‘anchors’ that bind to a metal ion (usually nickel), immobilized by chelation with nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) bound to a solid support [37, 38]. Consecutive histidines are the common denominator for both His-tags used in molecular biology and for quite remote biological phenomena – more than 2000 histidine- rich proteins (HRPs) are found in microorganisms including 60% and 82% of archaeal and bacterial species, respectively and their roles are not well characterized [73]. The physicochemical properties of histidine make it a versatile amino acid that influences protein conformation and enzymatic activity [15]. Many natural proteins with a His-tag domain are assigned to different functions, for example: most bacterial proteins, containing this motif are probably involved in the homeostasis of nickel ions [68, 76], while others, e.g. newly isolated peptides from the venom of the snake genus Atheris contain poly-histidyl-poly-glycyl sequences (pHpG) can act on the cardiovascular system by inhibiting snake venom metalloproteinases and affect its function by acting on specific receptors [58, 62]. His-rich motifs have been found also e.g. in Zn2+ transporters, prion proteins, His-rich glycoproteins, transcription factors or numerous copper-binding proteins [56, 67, 84]. Binding mode and the thermodynamic properties of the system depends on the specific metal ion and the histidine sequence. Despite the wide application of the His-tag for purification of proteins, little is known about the properties of metalbinding to such tag domain. Recent experimental and theoretical studies have shown that metal ions, e.g. Cu2+ can bind to various sets of imidazoles depending on the number of histidine residues that are located in His-rich sequences. The occurrence of polymorphic binding states and the formation of an α-helical structure induced by metal ion coordination suggest that proteins with a His-tag domain may serve as the dynamic site able to ‘move’ metal ions along the tag sequence [99, 100]. This might explain the frequent occurrence of such sequences in bacterial Ni2+ chaperones, which transfer the metal ion between different proteins.

In this research context, the scholar searched for the so-called fixed cause-and-effect principle, which refers to the targeted development of the nervous system. His’s pioneering research mainly focused on the structural genesis of the nervous system and the growth and development of embryonic neural cells.

The author discusses the celebration, despite the on-going Second World War, of the 400th anniversary of the death of the great Polish astronomer – Nicolaus Copernicus and his scientific achievements in the London-based civilian „Dziennik Polski” from January to October 1943. The celebration of this anniversary, which falls on May 24 this year, was disturbed by the discovery in April of mass graves of Polish officers in the Katyn Forest and the tragic death of General Władysław Sikorski in Gibraltar in a plane crash on his way back from the Middle East to London on July 4. She also noted some press reports in other countries about this anniversary. Methods used in writing the article: press content analysis – qualitative.

Opis:
One of the novels written by Bruno Jasieński (1901–1938), "Chelavek menayet kozhu" (Man Changes His Skin), was published between 1932 and 1933 and quickly attracted the interest of Soviet critics and readers. Jasieński chose as the background of his story an irrigation project carried out in the Vakhsh Valley in Tajikistan. Writing his novel, he used some of the material collected during his several visits to that Soviet republic. Tajik environment helped him to depict the question of rapid social and economic changes triggered by the communist revolution. The final result of his work is a socially and politically engaged socialist realist novel. An image of Tajikistan, that was carefully outlined on nearly six hundred pages, proves that the writer was not only a shrewd observer of the reality but also an inquisitive researcher of the past. However, it seems that his black-and-white sketch of Tajikistan was not his original concept but rather a requirement of the Soviet propaganda. Referring to some Soviet publications, we can easily find different passages clearly condemning the past and glorifying the present. Nevertheless, this simple comparison of the two opposing colours – black and white – served Bruno Jasieński to create a socially and politically engaged work. Of course, the future verified his idealistic vision of Soviet Tajikistan, making constructive criticism of this highly simplified double portrait.

Supposed analogies between Fryderyk Chopin and Juliusz Słowacki form a recurring thread that runs through the subject literature o f Romantic culture. Legions of literati, critics, literary scholars and musicologists have either attempted to find affinities between Chopin and Słowacki (on the level of both biography and creative output) or else have energetically demonstrated the groundlessness of all analogies, opinions and assumptions. Consequently, stereotypes have been formed and then strengthened concerning the relations between the two creative artists, particularly the conviction of Slowacki’s dislike of Chopin and his music, which - in the opinion of many scholars - the poet simply did not understand. Considerations of this kind most often centre on a famous letter written by Słowacki to his mother in February 1845. However, a careful reading of this letter and its comparison with Slowacki’s other utterances on the subject of Chopin shows that opinions of the poet’s alleged insanity, petty-mindedness or lack of subtlety in his contacts with Chopin’s music are most unjust. The analysed letter is not so much anti-Chopin as anti-Romantic. It inscribes itself perfectly in the context of the thinking of “the Słowacki of the last years”, since the poet negates crucial aesthetic features o f Romantic music, but at the same time criticises his own works: W Szwajcarii [In Switzerland] and, in other letters, Godzina myśli [An hour of thought] and the “picture of the age”, the poetical novel Lambro. It also turns out that what Słowacki says about the polonaises tallies with the opinions of musicologists and musicians writing about “late Chopin”.

In addition to the occasional reminder of the character of Professor Adam Andrzejewski, the essential goal of the article is to document the usefulness of the Professor’s thoughts in today’s socio-economic realities. The professor’s thought allowed for especially today’s consideration of the importance of the housing stock and other elements of settlement infrastructure as an opportunity and the basic field of realizing the sustainable development of the inhabited space, as well as the entire living space in reference to the concept of sustainable development. The presented article confirms that housing and settlement policy are elements of social sciences and the area of knowledge in the field of which the developed research methods and practices work well in the long term, reaching the secular dimensions. This regularity is reflected in the small changes in the directions of housing and settlement policy research formulated by Professor Adam Andrzejewski.
Poza przypomnieniem postaci Profesora Adama Andrzejewskiego zasadniczym celem artykułu jest wykazanie przydatności Jego myśli w dzisiejszych realiach społeczno-ekonomicznych. Myśl Profesora pozwoliła zwłaszcza na dzisiejsze rozpatrywanie znaczenia zasobu mieszkaniowego i innych elementów infrastruktury osadniczej jako szansy oraz podstawowego pola urzeczywistniania zrównoważonego rozwoju przestrzeni zamieszkanej, a także całej przestrzeni zamieszkiwania w nawiązaniu do koncepcji trwałego rozwoju. W artykule potwierdzono, że polityka mieszkaniowa i polityka osadnicza stanowią część nauk społecznych i obszar wiedzy, w zakresie których wypracowane metody badań i praktyki sprawdzają się w długim okresie sięgającym wymiaru sekularnego. Prawidłowość ta znajduje wyraz w niewielkich w sumie zmianach kierunków badań polityki mieszkaniowej i osadniczej sformułowanych przez Profesora Adama Andrzejewskiego.

Celem pracy jest weryfikacja składowych barwnych mapy satelitarnej przeznaczonej do interpretacji wizualnej z rozróżnieniem użytków zielonych ekologicznych i produkcyjnych. Wykorzystano zdjęcia satelity Landsat wykonane w dwóch terminach: 2011-05-01 i 1999-09-10. Wartość identyfikacyjną kanałów spektralnych ETM4, ETM5 oraz kanału panchromatycznego ETM8 oceniano metodą półautomatycznej klasyfikacji obiektowej. Do próby statystycznie reprezentatywnej dla dwóch mezoregionów (Kotliny Szczercowskiej i Równiny Piotrkowskiej) zastosowano test χ2 w modyfikacji Yates’a. Potwierdzono znaczenie wartości kanału ETM4 pozyskanych z dwóch zdjęć wykonanych w różnych porach roku w interpretacji użytków zielonych ekologicznych i produkcyjnych. Jednak z uwagi na wysoki poziom błędów konieczne jest wykorzystanie wielu cech interpretacyjnych lub weryfikacji terenowej obiektów rozpoznanych jako ekologiczne. Wzmocnienie dwuczasowej kompozycji kanałów ETM4 i ETM5 wartościami kanału ETM8 nie wpływa na możliwość rozpoznania użytków zielonych ekologicznych na podstawie cech barwnych obrazu.
The aim of the work is to verify color components of the satellite maps intended for distinguishing of ecological and production grassland due visual interpretation. Landsat images have been carried out in two dates: 2011-05-01 and 1999-09-10. Semi-automated object classification was performed on the training and test samples using spectral bands ETM4 and ETM5, and panchromatic ETM8. Different pairs of bands were analyzed separately. Test sample were statistically representative for fragments of the two geographical regions: Szczercowska Basin and Piotrkowska Plain. Yates's chi-squared test was applied. Confirmed the importance of the channel ETM4 registered in the two times of the year in the distinction of ecological and production grassland. However, due to a high level of error it is necessary to use more classification cues and/or terrain verification of field sites identified as ecological. Bitemporal composition of ETM4 and ETM5 bands enhanced with ETM8 band does not affect the ability to identify ecological grasslands by colour cues.

The collection of ancient art at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin has some outstanding specimens of foreign painting, including the first-class painting by the Flemish artist Marten van Valckenborch (1534-1612), entitled Loth and his Daughters (fig. 1-3) has a special place there. Painted on three oak planks, originally butted, it came to the CUL in three parts. After painstaking restoration works conducted in 1998-1999 in the Workshop of Painting and Sculpture Conservation of the Archdiocesan Museum of Religious Art in Lublin by Krzysztof Kawiak, the warped planks were straightened out in stocks and merged again. The painting was cleaned by removing secondary re-paintings and thick layers of darkened varnish, which resulted in revealing the painter’s authentic signature: MARTEN VAN / VALCKENBORCH / DEN AVDEN / FECIT 160[9?] in its left-hand bottom corner. The presented picture was painted after 1600, which is proven by the date placed in the signature; unfortunately, its last figure is illegible. It perfectly well became part of the final stage of Marten van Valckenborch’s work, called fantastic, that began around 1597. Intricately painted, dynamic mountain landscapes with religious scenes, as well as with blast-furnaces and blacksmith's shops, were the basic motifs in the works belonging to that period. Perhaps there would be nothing special in it, if not for the fact that up till then views of the mountains appeared only sporadically in Marten's painting. A change in artistic preferences of the author of our painting coincided with the death of his younger brother Lucas, in whose works this subject matter dominated for at least twenty years. Marten's style of the late period of his life has also distinct features of the work of his sons – Frederik (1566-1623) and Gillis (1570-1622), outstanding representatives of Netherlandish late Mannerism, who in the 1590s made a study trip to Italy, as well as of Tobias Verhaecht's (1561-1631) and Joos de Momper's (1564- painting. The pretext to show a vast mountain landscape in our painting was the final episode of the history of Lot described in Genesis (Gen. 19), when his daughters, convinced that „there is not a man in the earth”, „that night […] got him drunk with wine” (Gen 19,33) in order to be able to have sex with him. Among Marten van Valckenborch’s works River Valley with Iron Smelter from the Wichmann-Basner’s old collection in Sopot is the closest analogy to our painting; now it is kept at The Grohmann Museum Man at Work Collection at the Milwaukee School of Engineering (fig. 4). Especially a concurrence in composition and the use of similar chiaroscuro and color effects is clearly seen. Also a stone arcaded bridge is a common element in the two pictures. There are also blast-furnaces and blacksmith’s shops in our scene, albeit the artist put them in the background. The few paintings representing the final, fantastic stage that have been preserved are in private collections today. This situation makes it necessary to restore the painting from Lublin to the position it deserves and to arouse interest in it in broad circles of researchers.

W artykule poruszone zostały kwestie związane z instytucją usus stanowiącą jeden ze sposobów wejścia żony pod władzę męża. Artykuł porusza zagadnienia związane z genezą tejże instytucji. Autor zastanawia się także nad znaczeniem umiejscowienia instytucji usus w źródłach. Podstawowym zagadnieniem badawczym jest wyznaczenie terminu rozpoczęcia biegu usus, zatem pewnego rodzaju „zaużywania czy też zasiedzenia”, a w konsekwencji również zakończenie tego terminu. Ponadto autor porusza kwestie związane z usurpatio trinoctii.
The article addresses issues relating to the institution of usus, which was one of the ways a woman could be put under her husband’s authority and power. One of the points discussed is the origin of this institution. I consider the signifcance of the location of usus in the source documents. The fundamental question in research on usus is the determination of the date on which a period of usus started, in other words usus was treated as a sort of usucaption, which implied a date on which it would finish. I also discuss issues connected with usurpatio trinoctii.

To kolejny rozdział pracy o św. Wojciechu w naszej literaturze. Tym razem mamy tu o dramatach S. Kuczyńskiego Miłość zwycięża i M. Kulikowskiej Król Bolesław Chrobry. W obu mówi się o dawnych wierzeniach, z którymi zmaga się św. Wojciech, ale najwięcej jest na ten temat w pierwszym utworze, artystycznie jednak słabszym od dramatu Kulikowskiej. U niej św. Wojciecha interesuje nie tyle zmaganie nowej wiary ze starą, ile sytuacja umierającego króla. Wszak śmierć i miłość interesowały Młodą Polskę – a Kulikowska była właśnie jej poetką.
This is the next chapter of the work on St. Wojciech in our literature. This time we are talking about the dramas of S. Kuczyński “Miłość zwycięża” and M. Kulikowska “Król Bolesław Chrobry”. Both speak of old beliefs that St. Wojciech, but most of it is on this subject in the fi rst, but artistically weaker than Kulikowska’s drama. With her, St. Adalbert is not so much interested in the struggle of the new faith with the old one, as in the situation of the dying king. After all, Death and Love interested Młoda Polska, and it was Kulikowska who was her poet.

Opis:
After a very general exegetical introduction, we put forward a new arrangement and translation of the major testimonies on Zeno of Elea. The few passages that are generally regarded as fragmenta verbatim are also cited in the original. The source material is presented in a reconstructive order that is somewhat different from the previous editions of Zeno. Our aim is to capture the specific problematic context of the ancient authors who refer and question Zeno’s arguments, without isolating and break up theses texts. The particular passages have been provided with thematic headings.
