The purpose of this article is to present the social activity of the Polish diaspora in Great Britain in the second half of the 20th century where after the end of World War II, thousands of Poles had settled. For many of them social and charity work became a mission. The article presents most of the organizations established just after the end of the warfare and widely discusses charitable foundations that have been in operation since the 1980s, offering their help to those who fell victims of the political and economic system in Poland and beyond its eastern border. Material and moral help provided by Polish emigration in the United Kingdom was much needed by Poles in Poland and by Poles still living in the countries of the former Soviet Union.

The authors of the opinion comprehensively discuss the agreement concluded by the European Union, European Atomic Energy Community and the United Kingdom on the terms of trade and cooperation after Brexit and the agreement concluded between the European Union and the United Kingdom concerning security procedures for exchanging and protecting classified information. They present the provisions of individual parts of the agreements, regulating the issues of trade, fisheries, coordination of social systems, customs, visas, law enforcement cooperation and cybersecurity. They assess the impact of the implementation of the agreements. The authors positively assess the wide range of regulations. In their opinion they will reduce the negative effects of Brexit. However they identify some of their shortcomings that need to be removed.

Motywacja: W referendum przeprowadzonym 23 czerwca 2016 roku, Brytyjczycy zadecydowali o wystąpieniu Wielkiej Brytanii z Unii Europejskiej (UE). Dotychczas, tylko dwa państwa odłączyły się od struktur unijnych, tj. Grenlandia oraz Algieria. Analiza brexitu pozwoli na wyjaśnienie procedur i konsekwencji związanych z wystąpieniem danego państwa ze struktur unijnych. Ponadto, opuszczenie ugrupowania przez wysoko rozwinięte państwo o silnej pozycji na arenie międzynarodowej, może spowodować wyraźne skutki nie tylko polityczne, ale również ekonomiczne dla całej Europy. Cel: Celem artykułu jest wykazanie potencjalnego wpływu brexitu na poszczególne zmienne makroekonomiczne odzwierciedlające stan brytyjskiej gospodarki. Analizie poddano: stopę wzrostu gospodarczego mierzoną PKB, stopę inflacji mierzoną wskaźnikiem CPI (Consumer Price Index), kurs walutowy GBP/PLN, procesy migracyjne, finanse publiczne, bezpośrednie inwestycje zagraniczne (BIZ) oraz handel zagraniczny Zjednoczonego Królestwa. Materiały i metody: W artykule wykorzystano różne źródła i metody badawcze. Część teoretyczną oparto na artykułach naukowych oraz źródłach internetowych. Materiał empiryczny stanowią dane publikowane przez ONS, OECD oraz Oficjalny Portal Unii Europejskiej. Do zastosowanych metod badawczych można zaliczyć analizę opisową oraz analizę wybranych wskaźników makroekonomicznych. Wyniki: Przeprowadzona analiza wykazała, że brexit niewątpliwie będzie miał wpływ na stan gospodarki Wielkiej Brytanii, a skala spowolnienia zależy od wyboru przez rząd brytyjski modelu, określającego stopień powiązań z rynkiem unijnym. Do skutków brexitu można zaliczyć wolniejsze tempo wzrostu PKB, wzrost stopy inflacji, deprecjację GBP, zmniejszenie napływu imigrantów oraz odpływ BIZ na rzecz innych państw.
Motivation: In a referendum held on 23 June 2016, the British decided on Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union (EU). So far, only two countries have separated from EU structures, i.e. Greenland and Algeria. Brexit analysis will allow to explain the procedures and consequences associated with the occurrence of a given country from EU structures. In addition, leaving the group by a highly developed country with a strong position in the international arena, can cause not only political, but also economic consequences for the whole Europe. Aim: The aim of the article is to demonstrate the potential impact of brexit on particular macroeconomic variables reflecting the condition of the British economy. The analysis covered: the rate of economic growth measured by GDP, the inflation rate measured with the CPI (Consumer Price Index) index, the GBP/PLN exchange rate, migration processes, public finances, foreign direct investment (FDI) and the United Kingdom foreign trade. Materials and methods: The various sources and research methods were used in the article. The theoretical part is based on scientific articles and Internet sources. The empirical material is data published by ONS, OECD and the Official Portal of the European Union. The applied research methods include descriptive analysis and analysis of selected macroeconomic indicators. Results: The conducted analysis showed that brexit will undoubtedly have an impact on the condition of the UK economy, and the scale of the slowdown depends on the British government’s choice of a model defining the level of connections with the EU market. The effects of brexit can include slower GDP growth, higher inflation, GBP depreciation, reduced inflow of immigrants and outflow of FDI to other countries.

The aim of the article is to present and introduce the problem of loneliness among Polish women living in Great Britain. The level of modern globalisation affects the paceof their lives, preferred acculturation strategies, and the quality and frequency of interpersonal contacts they create with the Polish diaspora community, as well as with the English culture. In confrontation with the new reality, they oen experience a lack of understanding and rejection, which can lead to an increased sense of loneliness. In order to counteract this phenomenon, these women should be equipped with the ability to cope with situations of adaptation to living conditions on emigration.

In the second decade of the 21st century, British society reached a state known as “super-diversity”: it became a complex collage of races, religions and nationalities. The author argues that the religious diversity observed in contemporary Great Britain is a result of migration processes which reached considerable intensity in the second half of the 20th century. Opening the labour market to citizens of former colonies led to an inflow of workers belonging to cultures in which religion largely determined the identity of the individuals and social groups. The country of origin is a particularly important factor in the integration of immigrants into the host society, as it determines the individual's ethnicity, identity, religious practices, clan or tribal affiliation and regional identity. Acceptance of religious diversity, which is an element of the multicultural model of immigrant integration, is an important determinant of tolerance for cultural differences in British public life.

This article examines the activities and the politics of Zygmunt Kotwicz, editor of the émigré Głos Powszechny. The weekly was published in London in 1955–1958. At first it was an organ of the ‘Castle’ (a faction led by President-in-Exile August Zaleski). Fascinated by the 1956 ‘thaw’ in Poland, Kotowicz shifted the editorial line of Głos Powszechny. Early next year he became enmeshed with the Polish secret service, which began to provide covert funds for his paper. In May 1959 Kotowicz returned to Poland

Artykuł omawia proces powstawania silnej i dobrze zorganizowanej polskiej diaspory w Wielkiej Brytanii. Masowy napływ Polaków na Wyspy Brytyjskie miał miejsce podczas drugiej wojny światowej i związany był z działalnością Rządu RP na uchodźstwie oraz z Polskimi Siłami Zbrojnymi na Zachodzie. Sowietyzacja Polski i zmiana granic Rzeczypospolitej spowodowała, iż około 500 tysięcy Polaków pozostało po wojnie na Zachodzie. Największym skupiskiem emigrantów polskich było Zjednoczone Królestwo. Polityczny i inteligencki charakter tej emigracji oraz jej lokalizacja w Londynie i kilku głównych miastach Wielkiej Brytanii spowodowały, że stała się ona katalizatorem eksplozji licznych polskich organizacji, stowarzyszeń, instytucji nauki i kultury, parafii, szkolnictwa oraz prasy. Autor artykułu szczegółowo prezentuje przykłady aktywności intelektualnej polskiego wychodźstwa w Wielkiej Brytanii.
The article discusses the process of developing a strong and well-organized Polish diaspora in the United Kingdom. The mass influx of Poles to the British Isles took place during the Second World War and was connected with the activities of the Government of the Republic of Poland in exile and with the Polish Armed Forces in the West. The Sovietization of Poland and the change of its borders caused that about 500,000 Poles remained in the West after the war. The largest concentration of Polish expatriates was the United Kingdom. The political and intellectual nature of this emigration and its location in London and some major British cities have caused it to become a catalyst for the explosion of numerous Polish organizations, associations, educational and cultural institutions, parishes, schools and the press. The article's author offers a detailed analysis of the examples of the intellectual activity of Polish emigrants in Great Britain.

The aim of this paper is to place the case of the British 2016 referendum on whether to remain or leave the EU within theories of preference formation. Events and processes observed recently such the politicization of European integration, the growth of Eurosceptic and populist parties and movements, and more and more frequent reliance on voters’ opinions expressed in referendums – of which the British 2016 referendum is a special case – beg to consider which theories are best placed to explain these developments. The answer to these questions have a profound importance both from the perspective of EU politics, and allows for a better understanding of British politics too. The analysis spans since 1990s, thus stressing the importance of a long-standing processes for preference formation. In conclusion, the author assigns the highest explanatory power to historical institutionalism, focusing on the key role of British party politics, and intra-party divides in particular.

The purpose of his article is to analyze the process of Scotland`s independence movements and to identify the main challenges in the economic sphere in the aspect of potential separation of Scotland from United Kingdom. As a basis for the research method a study based on the analysis of selected information sources was used. The attempts by Scotland to separation from the Great Britain, taken over the centuries, ended in failure, but have contributed to increase of Scottish autonomy. The results of the referendum on the United Kingom’s continuing membership of the European Union have become the impulse for intensifi cation of Scottish activity towards secession from the Great Britain. Scotland wants to decide independently on its own economic development based mainly on oil and natural gas as well as renewable energy sources. The EU membership would enable Scotland to attain the goals set up by Scottish government. The benefits of being a member of the EU, such as access to the Single European Market, structural funds, ect., Scotland may lose if it stays within the United Kingdom. The government in London is fully committed to maintaining the unity of the United Kingdom and blocks Scottish activities aimed at independence. Further scenario will depend on the results of the negotiations and decisions reached by the United Kingdom and the European Union on the conditions on exiting the Union and the future directions, forms and principles for further co-operation.

On March 29, 2017, as a consequence of the referendum of June 23, 2016, the British Prime Minister, Theresa May, notified the European Council the intention to leave the EU in accordance with art. 50 of the Treaty on European Union (TEU). This means that within two years the United Kingdom will probably leave the EU. The phenomenon that we have dealt with since the beginning of the integration process within the European Communities (and later the EU) but which has more and more influence on the shape and functioning of the European Union for more or less decades, is the differentiation of integration in the EU between its member states. The UK’s exit from the EU and the progressive differentiation of integration within this organization are two extremely important processes that will strongly affect the shape and functioning of the EU. The main objective of this study is to try to answer the question of how UK’s exit from the EU will affect the process of differentiation integration in the EU. The starting point is an outline of the position of the United Kingdom in the EU in the context of differentiation of integration in the Union, i.e. identification of the most important exclusions of this state from the EU acquis communautaire (mainly the EU primary law). In the third part of the article, an attempt will be made to indicate the consequences of the exit of United Kingdom from the EU for deepening differences in the integration of the EU member states. The summary contains the main conclusions.

The majority of analytical centres forecasts show that – as a result of the United Kingdom’s resignation from the membership in the European Union – the British economy will face a recession. From the perspective of the United Kingdom’s development prospects, the effects of withdrawal from the EU should not be, however, very severe: in the worst scenario the GDP will decrease by 7.9 percent by 2030. Yet, the decrease is rather expected to be lower – between 1.1 and 3.5 percent – and with no risk of a deep and long-lasting economic crisis. The Polish economy will also experience negative effects of Brexit, these will not, however, be very serious either, and they will be equalised within three or four years thanks to the development of alternative markets. Still, some Polish companies closely connected with the British market may have difficulties finding new business niches.
