Opis:
An original feature of the style of the Fourth Gospel are dialogues in which Jesus introduces the content of his teaching. The dialogues represent the majority of the content of John‘s Gospel (60%). Among the so-called large dialogues are texts: 3,1-21 (Dialogue with Nicodemus); 4,5-42 (Dialogue with the Samaritan; 5,16-47 (Jesus power of God); 6,22-59 (Eucharistic speech); 7,1-8,59 (Jesus working in Jerusalem in the octave of the Feast of Tabernacles); 9,1-39 (The Healing of a Blind Born); 10,1-18 (The Good Shepherd); 10,22-39 (Christ One with the Father); 11,17-27 (Jesus Dialogue with Martha); 12,20-39 (The Time of the Son of Man); 13,1-17,26 (The Farewell Speech - in it the dialogues with Thomas, Philip, Judas, not Iscariot, with the disciples). The characteristic feature of the dialogues of the fourth Gospel is misunderstandings in the relation of Jesus – listener. When Jesus says a sentence, the listeners do not understand his intention and they do not understand the meaning of Jesus‘ statement. Only in another part of the dialogue, in which the dialogue becomes a monologue, does Jesus reveal the true meaning of his statement. In the article the dialogue with the Samaritan J 4,1-26 was analysed according to the following structure:The characteristics of the dialogue partner and information about the place and time (J 4,19);Jesus These (J 4:10); the misunderstanding of Jesus‘ statement (J 4:11-12);Jesus explanation (J 4:13-14);the misunderstanding of Jesus‘ explanation (J 4:15);further explanations (J 4,16-26);the dialogue partner disappears, the dialogue merges into Jesus‘ speech (J 4:27-42).

Gospel of John
Prologue
Opis:
The present paper is focused on translation studies. We analyze to what degree the Prologue of the Gospel of John is translatable into selected Polish translations, and to what degree it can be retranslated into Hebrew. What is new in our  approach is the analysis of the inaccuracy of translation of the original text which is apparent in the prototype translation (Ur-translation) of the Vulgate by Jerome. Thanks to the comparison between the Vulgate and Polish translations of the Prologue, and their retranslation into Hebrew, we concluded that they repeat the mistakes of the Vulgate almost automati- cally. When we liberate ourselves from the influence of the Vulgate, we face with yet another difficulty. The Prologue is a text of initiation, and it is translatable according to the dynamie equivalence only for a reader, who was intended by the author of the Gospel of John. For other readers, the Prologue can be translated, morę or less accurately, according to the formal equivalence.

Opis:
The article deals with the concept of work as reflected in the Fourth Gospel, encompassing the two cognate lexemes ἐργάζομαι and ἔργον. The analysis is organized according to the subjects who are performing a given work, to wit: the Father, the Son, Jesus’ disciples (including Abraham) and, finally, the people hostile toward God, designated in the Gospel by the general term world. Interestingly enough, both of the studied lexemes appear in John’s Gospel only on the lips of Jesus. Additionally, as it turns out, the Johannine concept of work covers a whole range of meanings: the activity of the Father and the Son (who give life and perform judgment), the salvific mission of the Son, Jesus’ teaching and his obedience to the Father’swill, miraculous healings, human deeds in general (both good or bad), disciples’ fulfillment of God’s will, meaning primarily their faith in Jesus as the Messiah and the Son of God. In a nutshell, the very essence of the work of the Father and the Son (and continued by Jesus’ disciples) can be encapsulated in the concept of salvation.

Opis:
The teaching about the uplifting of the Son of Man (cf. 3:14–15; 8:28; 12:32) belongs to John the Evangelist and constitutes an important element of his Christology. While the Synoptics regard Christ’s Cross as a tool of his humiliation and torture, John contemplates the Cross as a place of glory and victory. From the height of the Cross, as a king’s throne, the Son of Man rules the world and performs the work of its salvation. Therefore, it lies in the best interest of the world that “the Son of Man must be lifted up” (3:14). Only then the humankind has an access to the fullness of God’s revelation. It recognises the true identity of the Uplifted, who has the right to speak of himself “I am” (cf. 8:28). In the moment of Jesus’s uplifting, the process of drawing up begins (cf. 12:32). Anyone who responds with faith and wholeheartedly wants to be drawn up by the Son of Man, can participate in it.

Opis:
John 3:16 is undoubtedly one of the best known and most beloved verses in all of Scripture. At the same time, when ripped from its literary, historical and theological contexts as it so often is, this verse can become merely a pious, sentimental saying bereft of its true, earth-shaking message. Thus this study provides not only an exegetical analysis of the verse, but also the exposition of its various contexts: literary (the interchange between Jesus and Nicodemus on the entrance into the kingdom of God), historical (the destruction of the Jerusalem temple and the worldwide mission of the early Church) and theological (the OT, NT and John’s Gospel concepts of God’s universal love). God’s love for the world, and the salvific mission flowing from it, are most beneficially viewed from a salvation-historical perspective, as the core Trinitarian outreach in which all are called to take part by putting faith in Jesus.

Opis:
This article aims to „The true light (Jn 1.9a). Jesus as the light in the Prologue of the Fourth Gospel”, was to explain the meaning of the symbol of the light connected with the person of Jesus Christ - the Logos in the Prologue of the Gospel of St John. The analysis of the text helped to establish that the author wanted to show the person o f Logos as a necessary condition of all life, and above all, the supernatural life (Jn 1,4). By revealing the divine life through the Incarnation, whose symbol is a light, he met with extreme hostility, which, however, is unable to destroy him (Jn 1,5). He is the light in an absolute sense (Jn 1,9). No one besides Him can not bestow the light, which in its fullest sense is identified with salvation. Father (John 5,31-32.37-38; 8,16-19), the Holy Spirit (Jn 15,26), the work of Jesus (Jn 5,36,10,25) and John the Baptist (Jn 1,7-8; 19nn) bear witness of His light, that people believed in him and thus have eternal life (Jn 20,31).

Opis:
The subject of the present study is the words of Jesus presented in John 5:39: “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about Me.” A larger apologetic speech of Jesus constitutes the immediate context of this statement; within the structure of the Fourth Gospel this discourse follows the description of the healing of the paralytic at the Bethesda Pool (cf. John 5:1-47). The monologue is the response of Jesus to certain Jews who strongly objected to his activity during the Sabbath day and to Jesus’ likening himself to the Father. Exchanging arguments in his own defence, Jesus quotes the testimony of the Scriptures. Investigation of the Old Testament texts clearly points to Jesus, and thus His claims to take action on a holy day are fully justified.

Opis:
The verb καταλαμβάνω is usually translated in Jn 1:5 as to „comprehend”, „overpower”, „overcome”. The same word, however, in Jn 12:35 is understood differently (as to „comeupon”, „overtake”, ecc.), although in both cases the subject is the same: „the darkness”. To be frank the object is different: in Jn 1:5 it is „the light”, in Jn 12:35 – „the people”. But by the opinion of the author of the article it is allowed to discover the idea of to „surprise” / „catch” / „come upon” / „overtake” also in Jn 1:5. The logic of the narrative of the Gospel of John and especially the scene of the Arrest of Jesus (Jn 18:1 – 14) authorizes this (a littleinnovatory) translation.

The article presents a translation experiment done by Roman Brandstaetter while translating the prologue initiating the Gospel of John. Not only did the translator change the traditional form of naming the prologue About the Word or The Eternal Word and propose a lofty genre one – Hymn to the Word – but also altered past tense form “was” for present “is” which constituted the core of his experiment. That alteration revealed and established the understanding of eternal time by the Israelis in the times of John the Evangelist. Following the innovative path of Brandstaetter the author of the article suggested another transformation – exchange of “Word” for “Ghost” – in order to create a new experimental adaptation of that work as well as to emphasize the timelessness of Hymn to the Word.

The various stages of the analysis of John’stext are aimed at establishing the reasons, the time frame, the environmentof the addressees, and the nature of the change, which allows the life ofthe disciples to be described as new. The study ends with a presentationof the laws and the rules defining the meaning of the new life with a shortreference to the present times.

Opis:
The Gospel of John is closely related to the Judeo-Christian environment, where the theological ideas contained in the targums were present. One of them is Targum Neofiti 1, which uses specific words for the name of God. They are: Memra (Word), Yeqara (Glory) and Shekinah (Presence). These phrases describe God, they are like another name for Him, but it may seem a bit separated from Him. This conviction is also evident in John's Gospel. Just as “The Only Begotten” in the bosom of the Father is someone separate from the person of the Father, so is this close and unbreakable bond expressed in the image of being in the bosom of the Father (Jn 1:18). This article shows the meaning of the phrase “The Only Begotten in the bosom of the Father” in a biblical and targumic context. This allows for a deeper penetration into the meaning of this phrase, as well as the idea of God's paternity shown in the pages of the Fourth Gospel.

The article surveys recent scholarship on the use of creation imagery inthe Gospel of John, with the aim of presenting rather exhaustive register ofpossible references. Both the obvious and the less clear-cut allusions to Gen1–3 are discussed, the main focus being to accumulate and assess evidence(for or against) all the apparent references to creation imagery. Included inthis examination are several unconvincing and even far-fetched proposalsadvanced by some modern scholars, in order to give the fullest possiblepicture of current discourse on these issues. After discussing the creationtheme in the Prologue (1:1–18), the article explores the presence of creationimagery in the Book of Signs (1:19–12:50) and the Book of Glory (13:1–21:25).

A detailed comparative analysis of the fragments Jn 4 and Acts 8 reveals that Jn 4 is linked to Acts 8 with the use of 48 sequentially ordered correspondences. These correspondences are mainly conceptual-thematic (John’s use of Lucan ideas), but also linguistic (John’s use of Lucan phrases, keywords, etc.).In order to illustrate the ideas from Acts, John often used motifs borrowed from other works (all three Synoptic Gospels, the Septuagint, the Pauline letters, the First Letter of John, etc.). However, it is the Acts of the Apostles that constitutes the main base text (hypotext) for the conceptual structure of the Fourth Gospel. This surprisingly close structural-conceptual connection of the Fourth Gospel to the Acts of the Apostles permits us to regard John as in fact the fourth Synoptic.
