    Since ancient times, the goal of the language of politics has been to evoke emotions among recipients. It is no different in the forms that were created for the needs of election campaigns for Volkstag during the Free City of Gdańsk period (1920–1939). Leaflets were the most important media at that time; they were distributed on the streets, stuck on the walls. Their analysis reveals the language strategies that the authors used to encourage voting. The parties consistently create a picture of a city detached from the German homeland whose existence is threatened. They are eager to refer to such universal values as: homeland, patriotism, community, unity and Germanness. The texts are characterized by language aggression towards opponents, emotional saturation and the dichotomy of choice, the quintessence of which are the words used in the title from one of the leaflets.

    The Weimar Germany did not accept the consequences of losing the First World War, thus it did not accept the border line with Poland. This border ran along two disputed areas: Pomerania in the north and Upper Silesia in the south-west, crossing many commu-nication routes. The return of Pomerania to Poland was one of the fundamental issues for the reborn Polish state, which was considered the basis of international prestige and facili-tation of military contacts with its western allies. The Free City of Gdansk was created on the basis of the Treaty of Versailles as a com-promise between the need for Poland to gain access to the Baltic Sea and the interests of the city's majority German-speaking population. It was an independent entity of interna-tional relations, connected by a special relationship of dependence with the League of Nations and an administrative protectorate with Poland. The international legal status of Gdańsk and its system was shaped by the aforementioned treaty, the Constitution of the Free City of Gdańsk and agreements concluded by the Gdańsk authorities with the Polish state. This complicated legal anchor and the granting of the power to decide on public matters to various decision-makers, whose interests often conflicted, has become the basis for serious conflicts and one of the hotspots in the still not easy German-Polish relations. The situation that developed in the Free City of Gdańsk also placed special tasks for Po-lish border formations and Polish customs service posts. The powers granted to Poland in the Free City of Gdańsk were extensive. The problem was their enforcement. Poland's relations with the Free City of Gdańsk were usually the result of Polish-German relations, and along with the war threat from Germany, they sys-tematically deteriorated. Gdańsk gradually took on the features of a German base for Poland. The difficult Polish-Gdańsk relations were affected by issues such as the Gdańsk consti-tution, the city's military defense and the problem of determining the place of transhi-pment of war materials.

    Michał Aleksander Borowski (1872–1939), generał major rosyjskiej marynarki wojennej, kontradmirał Polskiej Marynarki Wojennej. Do Wojska Polskiego został przyjęty 12 grudnia 1918 r. W lutym 1919 r. w ramach Generalnej Delegacji Ministerstwa Aprowizacji sprawował funkcję kierownika portu gdańskiego, od lipca 1919 r. jednocześnie w ramach Departamentu dla spraw Morskich pełnił funkcję pełnomoc-nika do spraw wojskowych i morskich. W marcu 1921 r. był zastępcą przewodniczącego Delegacji Polskiej w Radzie Portu Gdańskiego, a od lipca 1923 r. przewodniczącym Polskiej Delegacji Rady Portu i Dróg Wodnych w Gdańsku. Ze służby odszedł w sierpniu 1927 r. Emeryturę spędził w Wilnie, gdzie zmarł 23 grudnia 1939 r.
    Michał Aleksander Borowski (1872–1939), Major General of the Russian Navy, Rear Admiral of the Polish Navy. He was admitted to the Polish Army on December 12, 1918. In February 1919, as part of the General Delegation of the Ministry of Provisions, he held the post of head of the Gdańsk port, and from July 1919, simultaneously as part of the Department for Maritime Affairs, he held the post of plenipotentiary for military and maritime affairs. In March 1921, he was deputy chairman of the Polish delegation to the Gdańsk Port Council, and from July 1923, chairman of the Polish delegation to the Port and Waterways Council in Gdańsk. He left the service in August 1927 and retired in Vilnius where he died on December 23, 1939.

    Opis:
    Kurt Walter (1892-1963) was born in Gdańsk, died in Stuttgart. He studied theology and philosophy in Berlin, Tübingen and Königsberg. He vo¬lun¬teered during the First World War and although he was seriously wounded he served in the air force. In 1923 he started his ministry in the Free City of Gdańsk (WMG). He was a leader of the Confessing Church in Gdańsk from 1934. He pro¬tested against state interference into church affairs. In his sermons and journalism he exposed the falsehoods inherent in Nazi ideology. He in¬formed both clergy and congregations about how members of the Confes-sing Church were sent to concentration camps, led prayers for imprisoned clergymen and organized help for persecuted Jews. In the spring of 1942 he was imprisoned, and sent finally to the con¬centration camp at Dachau. After his release he settled in Stuttgart, continu¬ing his ministry service. In addition, he was active in the Bund der Danziger. Kurt Walter is presented in the context of the political situation in Ger¬many and the Free City of Gdansk.

    W okresie napoleońskiego Wolnego Miasta Gdańska Francuzi próbowali skłonić gdańszczan do wystawienia własnych oddziałów wojskowych. Miasto obciążone stosunkowo licznym garnizonem, a także kosztami jego otrzymania, niechętnie patrzyło na kolejny drenaż swoich kas. W 1808 roku powstała I Kompania Grenadierów Wolnego Miasta Gdańska, która miała stać się zalążkiem kolejnych formacji mieszczańskich. Rok później, w momencie wkroczenia wojsk austriackich do Księstwa Warszawskiego oraz w obliczu zbliżania się Austriaków do Torunia, generał Michał Grabowski skłonił władze miejskie do powołania nowej jednostki – straży (gwardii) mieszczańskiej. Owe dwie jednostki były jedynymi oddziałami wojskowymi wystawionymi przez miasto w owym okresie. Władze miejskie sprzeciwiały się wykorzystywaniu swoich jednostek w charakterze oddziałów liniowych. Na tym tle wybuchł spór z generałem Grabowskim. Obydwie jednostki nie reprezentowały większej wartości bojowej, pełniąc raczej funkcję symboliczną. Ich byt zakończył się w 1814 roku wraz z kapitulacją napoleońskiego garnizonu.
    During the period of the Napoleonic Free City of Gdańsk (1807-1814), the French tried to persuade local authorities to establish a bourgeois military troop. The City, burdened with numerous garrisons (as well as their maintenance), was reluctant to consider another drain on its resources. In 1808 the1st company of grenadiers of the Free City of Gdańsk arose. A year later, when war broke out between France and Austria, and Austrians troops entered the Duchy of Warsaw and captured Warsaw. When they wereapproaching Toruń, the Polish general Michał Grabowski, commander of the city, drafted a new military unit – the city watch. Municipal authorities opposed the use of bourgeois as regular soldiers. Against this background, the city came into conflict with general Grabowski. None of these troops representedgreater combat value. They were rather a symbol of the independence of the Free City of Gdańsk. Their existence ended with the conquest of Gdańsk by the Russians and Prussians in 1814.

    Cars in the interwar became a popular means of communication. Therefore, also benefited from it in intelligence work. Mainly it was just that their exploitation was cheaper than rail travel. On the other hand, gave it the ability to travel freely and quickly, and also perform some espionage tasks. At the same time we had to be careful, because foreign intelligence quickly versed in the ways of movement of Polish officers in Gdansk. The development of the automotive industry caused a lot of interest in new models, including rapid and sports. Therefore, sometimes the variety of brands became an indispensable element of Gdańsk streets, where there had place also collisions and accidents. Having a car also scheduled between social status, and so the more expensive and nicer car had the individual, the more significant was his position in society Gdansk. Gdańsk policymakers drove expensive cars, imported from abroad. In this image also entered the Polish intelligence chief, Maj. Jan Henryk Żychoń who loved, next to glamorous parties, expensive cars. And this led to accusations him by officers working in an easterly direction, to cooperate with foreign intelligence, because there seen the source of his finances. Żychoń had no worries about false allegations, the transparency of the work of subordinate officers stations, seemed numerous instructions, even for drivers of company vehicles. This had a big impact on the streamlining of information. Cars were also cause other problems, “ace Polish intelligence” that exacerbated the dispute with his former opponents.
    In den zwei Jahrzehnten zwischen den beiden Weltkriegen wurden Automobile zu einem beliebten Verkehrsmittel. Deshalb kamen sie auch in der nachrichtendienstlichen Arbeit zum Einsatz. Dabei ging es vor allem darum, dass ihre Nutzung billiger war als Bahnfahren. Außerdem bestand die Möglichkeit, ungehindert und schnell zu reisen sowie einige Spionageaufgaben auszuführen. Gleichzeitig musste man aufpassen, weil der fremde Nachrichtendienst schnell dahinterkam, auf welche Weise sich die polnischen Offiziere in Danzig fortbewegten. Die Entwicklung der Automobilindustrie führte zu einem großen Interesse an neuen Modellen, auch schnellen und sportlichen. Deshalb wurde die Markenvielfalt mit der Zeit auch ein unabdingbares Element auf den Danziger Straßen, auf denen es auch zu Zusammenstößen und Unfällen kam. Der Besitz eines Automobils gehörte auch zum sozialen Status, je teurer und schöner das Auto eines Bürgers war, desto bedeutsamer war seine Position in der Danziger Gesellschaft. Die Danziger Entscheidungsträger fuhren teure Autos, die aus dem Ausland eingeführt wurden. In dieses Bild passte auch der Chef des polnischen Nachrichtendienstes, Major Jan Henryk Żychoń, der außer üppigen Empfängen auch teure Autos liebte. Dies trug dazu bei, dass er von in östlicher Richtung arbeitenden Offizieren beschuldigt wurde, mit einem fremden Nachrichtendienst zusammenzuarbeiten, denn dort wurde die Quelle seiner Finanzen gesehen. Żychoń machte sich nichts aus den falschen Anschuldigungen, gab aber für die Transparenz der ihm unterstellten Offiziersdienststellen zahlreiche Anweisungen heraus, auch für die Fahrer von Dienstfahrzeugen. Dies hatte großen Einfluss auf die Optimierung der Informationsarbeit. Automobile waren auch der Grund für weitere Probleme des “Asses des polnischen Nachrichtendienstes”, die zu einer Verschärfung des Streites mit seinen früheren Opponenten führten.

    W Gdyni w latach 1933-1939 działała placówka polskiego wywiadu wojskowego. Był to Posterunek Oficerski nr 2 (PO 2), podlegający większej agendzie, Ekspozyturze nr 3 Oddziału II Sztabu Głównego Wojska Polskiego. Pod kierownictwem oficera pracowało w nim kilku wojskowych i cywilów. Podlegali im agenci, zbierający wiadomości w terenie. Ich liczba oscylowała między 6 a 13. Ogółem, w latach 1933-1938 dla PO 2 pracowało w Gdańsku i Niemczech co najmniej 37 agentów. PO 2 utworzono kilka miesięcy po objęciu władzy w Rzeszy przez nazistów i tuż po wystąpieniu Niemiec z Ligi Narodów. Lata 1931-1933 były okresem wyjątkowego napięcia w stosunkach polsko-gdańskich. Ich widownią było głównie forum Ligi Narodów. Prawdopodobnie powołanie posterunku kontrwywiadu ofensywnego (bo taki miał profil działalności przez pierwsze dwa lata) spowodowane było obawą przed rozwojem sytuacji w Wolnym Mieście. Naziści byli nieobliczalni i groźni. W zakresie kontrwywiadowczym PO 2 był tarczą osłaniającą port w Gdyni i najbliższy rejon przed penetracją niemiecką idącą. Sąsiedztwo Wolnego Miasta Gdańska było główną przyczyną powołania posterunku. Było to miasto cieplarniane dla działalności szpiegowskiej i nielegalnej. Przybywali tam dezerterzy, przemytnicy, fałszerze, pospolici przestępcy, działacze polityczni i uciekinierzy przed prześladowaniami. Do listopada 1935 roku gdyński PO 2 koncentrował się na pracach kontrwywiadowczych związanych z Gdańskiem. Do łatwych zadań należało namierzanie mieszkań, w których niemieckie służby spotykały się ze współpracownikami. Kilkadziesiąt zadań rocznie dotyczyło sprawdzenia doniesień posterunków oficerskich, ekspozytury lub innych służb polskich w odniesieniu do podejrzanych osób. Szukano szpiegów i zdrajców. Badano zachowania – zwłaszcza gdańszczan – nietypowe i występujące regularnie.Zbierano wiadomości o powiązaniach między przedsiębiorstwami polskimi, gdańskimi i niemieckimi na Wybrzeżu. Sprawdzano kontakty towarzyskie oficerów Wojska Polskiego i członków ich rodzin (zwłaszcza żon). Od 1935 roku, w związku z powstaniem niemieckiej armii z poboru powszechnego (Wehrmacht) PO 2 został przestawiony na działania ofensywne, głównie na terenie Pomorza Zachodniego (czyli wschodniego obszaru Provinz Pommern oraz Grenzmark Posen Westpreussen). Chodziło o poznanie stanu niemieckich zbrojeń, dyslokacji wojsk, budowy lotnisk i umocnień (na późniejszym tzw. Wale Pomorskim, (Pommern stellung – d 1).I przewidzenie szybkości mobilizacji.
    In the years 1933-1939 in Gdynia there was a post of Polish military intelligence. It wasan officers’ Post no 2 (PO-2), subordinated to a bigger agency, the Branch Office no 3 ofthe Second Department of the Polish Army’s General Staff. An officer managed a teamof several people, military men and civilians. In turn, they managed agents, who collected information. Their number oscillated between 6 and 13. Altogether, in the years1933–1938 there were at least 37 agents working for PO-2 in Gdańsk and Germany. PO-2 was created a few months after the Nazis assumed power in the Reich andjust after Germany left the League of Nations. The years 1931–1933 were a period ofexceptional tension between Poland and Gdańsk/Danzig. It was especially visible in theforum of the League of Nations. The reason behind creating a post of offensive counter-intelligence (such was the profile of the post for the first two years) was a fear of howthe situation in the Free City of Danzig might develop. The Nazis were unpredictable anddangerous. From the counter-intelligence point of view PO-2 was a shield protecting the port in Gdynia and its surroundings from the German penetration. The vicinity of Gdańsk wasthe main reason to create the post. It was a propitious city for espionage. The Free Cityof Gdańsk/Danzig was full of deserters, smugglers, forgers, common criminals, politicalactivists, escapees and refugees. Until November 1935 the Gdynia PO-2 concentrated on counter-intelligence concerning Gdańsk. A relatively easy task was to identify flats where the Germans met withtheir collaborators. Several score of tasks were related with checking the reports concerning various people; the reports were coming from the officers’ posts, the branch office or other sources. Spies and traitors were looked for. The behaviours of selected inhabitantsof Gdańsk were investigated, especially the uncharacteristic and – at the same time –regular ones. The information was collected on the connections between Polish, Gdańskand German enterprises. Social contacts of officers of the Polish Army and the membersof their families (especially their wives) were looked at carefully. Since 1935 in connection with creating Wehrmacht out of compulsory conscriptionPO-2 changed its mode of action into offensive, mainly in West Pomerania, i.e. the eastern part of Provinz Pommern and Grenzmark Posen Westpreussen. The point was to define the state of the German armaments, the deployment of German troops, the locationof their airports and fortifications (of what was to become the Pomeranian Embankment,Pommernstellung) and the speed of mobilisation.

    W artykule opisano działalność Wacława Kłoczkowskiego (1873–1930), który służył w rosyjskiej marynarce wojennej od 1898 do 1917 r. W 1917 r. został awansowany do stopnia kontradmirała. W Wojsku Polskim służył od marca 1919 r. Od kwietnia 1919 r. do lutego 1922 r. był członkiem polskiej dyplomacji (członek Delegacji RP w Paryżu), przewodniczącym Komisji Gdańskiej i Żeglugi, pełnomocnikiem woj-skowym i morskim Poselstwa Polskiego w Londynie. Po przyjeździe do Polski był kolejno: naczelnikiem Wydziału Administracyjnego Spraw Wojskowych, drugim zastępcą szefa Zarządu Marynarki Wojennej, peł-nomocnikiem generalnym Ministerstwa Spraw Wojskowych na Wester-platte, dowódcą 15. Dywizji Piechoty w Toruniu. Zmarł w Warszawie 15 stycznia 1930 r.
    Wacław Kłoczkowski (1873–1930). He served in the Russian Navy from 1898 to 1917. In 1917 he was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral. Served in the Polish Army since March 1919. From April 1919 to February 1922, he was a member of Polish diplomacy (member of the Polish Delegation in Paris), Chairman of the Gdańsk and Shipping Commission, military and naval plenipotentiary of the Polish Embassy in London. After arriving in Poland he was consecutively: head of the Admini-strative Branch of the Military Affairs, second deputy head of the Naval Management, general plenipotentiary of the Ministry of the Military Affairs for Westerplatte, commander of the 15th Infantry Division in Toruń. He died in Warsaw on 15 January 1930.

    Ignacy Jan Paderewski (1860–1941), jeden z twórców polskiej niepodległości oraz światowej sławy pianista, pozostawił po sobie bezcenną spuściznę dokumentacyjną. Jest ona rozproszona w ponad 20 archiwach i innych instytucjach pamięci w Polsce i innych krajach. Składają się na nią materiały o charakterze biograficznym, ale przede wszystkim dokumenty z jego niemal 60-letniej aktywności artystycznej, politycznej i dyplomatycznej. Już jako znany w świecie artysta Paderewski stanął na czele rządu jedności narodowej w odradzającej się Polsce. Jednocześnie objął funkcję ministra spraw zagranicznych i delegata polskiego na konferencję pokojową w Paryżu. W ciągu niespełna rocznej działalności (od 16 stycznia do 9 grudnia 1919 r.) odegrał kluczową rolę w walce o polskie granice i w budowie podstaw organizacyjnych niepodległego państwa polskiego. Ciesząc się zaufaniem przywódców mocarstw zachodnich, w tym prezydenta USA Woodrow Wilsona, szybko doprowadził do uznania Polski za niepodległe państwo, sprzymierzone z państwami Ententy. Na konferencji paryskiej, wspierany przez Romana Dmowskiego oraz historyków (Szymona Askenazego, Oskara Haleckiego, Władysława Konopczyńskiego) i geografów (m.in. Eugeniusza Romera) toczył dyplomatyczne boje o włączenie do Polski Śląska Cieszyńskiego, Górnego Śląska, Galicji Wschodniej oraz ziem zaboru pruskiego wraz z Gdańskiem. Jego dymisja z funkcji premiera nie zakończyła aktywności na rzecz Polski, którą prowadził na emigracji aż do śmierci w 1941 r.
    Ignacy Jan Paderewski (1860–1941), one of the architects of Polish independence and a world-renowned pianist, left behind an invaluable documentary legacy. It is scattered in over 20 archives and other remembrance institutions in Poland and other countries. It comprises biographical materials but above all, documents of almost 60 years of his artistic, political and diplomatic activity. When Paderewski became the head of the National Unity Government in the reborn Poland, he was already a world-famous artist. At the same time, he accepted the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs and Polish delegate to the peace conference in Paris. Over the course of less than a year (from 16 January to 9 December 1919) of activity, he played a key role in the struggle for Polish borders and building the organisational basis for the sovereign Polish state. Enjoying the trust of the leaders of Western powers, including US President Woodrow Wilson, he quickly achieved recognition of Poland as a sovereign state, allied with the Entente. At the Paris conference, supported by Roman Dmowski and historians (Szymon Askenazy, Oskar Halecki, Władysław Konopczyński) and geographers (e.g. Eugeniusz Romer), he fought diplomatic battles for the inclusion of Cieszyn Silesia, Upper Silesia, Eastern Galicia, and the lands of the Prussian partition including Gdańsk, into Poland. His resignation from the post of prime minister did not end his activity for Poland, which he continued as an émigré until his death in 1941.

    „Długi” wiek XIX (1772-1920) upłynął na Pomorzu Gdańskim pod władzą zaborcy pruskiego. Na przekór bismarckowskiej germanizacji kształtowała się nowoczesna świadomość narodowa polska, oparta o tradycje walki o niepodległość (1807, 1830, 1848, 1863) i hasła pozytywistyczne, co wpłynęło na postawy Polaków w latach 1918-1920. O połączeniu Pomorza Gdańskiego – Nadwiślańskiego – Prus Zachodnich (niem. Provinz Westpreussen) z odzyskującą niepodległość Polską zadecydowały silne powiązania z powstaniem wielkopolskim i decyzje konferencji pokojowej w Paryżu (1919). Mimo zakazu podejmowania walki na Pomorzu wydanego przez Naczelną Radę Ludową, działały tu różne grupy konspiracyjne na czele z Organizacją Wojskową Pomorza, toczące utarczki z niemieckim Grenzschutzem-Ost, przygotowujące powstanie w Gdańsku na wypadek pojawienia się „Błękitnej Armii” gen. Józefa Hallera, tworzące partyzantkę w Borach Tucholskich. Konspiratorzy wzięli udział w wojnie z Rosją Sowiecką w 1920 r., a symbolem ich zwycięstwa stały się zaślubiny Polski z morzem 10 lutego 1920 r.
    The “long” 19th century (1772-1920) passed in Pomerania-Gdansk under the Prussian-German invaders. In spite of Bismarck’s germanization, modern polish national bassed on the traditions of the struggle for independence (for example Napoleonic Free City of Gdańsk, Springtide of Nations 1848 and polish Uprisings 1830, 1863) and positivist slogans which influenced the attitudes of Poles in the years 1918-1920. On the merger of Pomerania-Gdansk – Pomerania-on the Vistula – Western Prussia (germ. ‘Westpreussen’) with Poland regaining independence was determined by strongties with the Greater Poland Uprising and the decisions of the peace conference in Paris (1919). Despite the ban of fighting against Pomerania issued by the Supreme People’s Council (Naczelna Rada Ludowa), various underground groups led here, including the Pomeranian Military Organization (Organizacja Wojskowa Pomorza), fighting with the German Grenzschutz-Ost (germ. ‘border paramilitary units’), preparing the uprising in Gdansk in the event of the appearance of the “Blue Army” (Polish Army in France) gen. Joseph Haller’s, forming a guerilla in Bory Tucholskie (pol. Forrest of Tuchola). The conspirators took part in the war with Soviet Russia in 1920 and the symbol of their victory became the “marriage” of Poland with the Baltic Sea on February 10, 1920.

    W artykule poddałam refleksji tekstualne konstrukcje projektu tożsamościowego oraz obraz Wolnego Miasta Gdańska w autobiografii wzrastającego tam artysty pochodzenia żydowskiego Franka Meislera zatytułowanej Zaułkami pamięci. Gdańsk – Londyn – Jaffa. Wychodząc od analizy narracyjnej, prześledziłam sposób portretowania kulturowego splotu Wolnego Miasta Gdańska i tamtejszej społeczności żydowskiej w jej zróżnicowaniu. Uwzględniłam zarówno kwestię ujmowania doświadczenia pogranicza i żydowskości, jak i różnice w ich przedstawianiu w stosunku do utartej matrycy postrzegania relacji Wschód–Zachód, a także wielojęzyczność jako motyw i strategię narracyjną. Tekst Meislera został ujęty w ramach literatury kulturowego pogranicza i postfaktograficznej literatury Holocaustu.
    This article reflects on the textual constructions of identity and the image of the Free City of Gdańsk (Danzig) in Frank Meisler’s autobiography On the Vistula Facing East, 1996 (Zaułkami pamięci. Gdańsk–Londyn–Jaffa, 2014; An der Weichsel gegen Osten, 2016). The author was a British-Israeli artist born in 1925 in the Free City of Gdańsk. The narrative analysis conducted here explores how Meisler presents cultural entanglements in the Free City of Gdańsk and its diversified Jewish community. My aim is to examine his strategies for portraying the borderland experience, his multilingualism, and for incorporating the Jewishness into the matrix of the East-West relations. Meisler’s autobiography has been interpreted as an example of the literature of cultural borderlands and of post-factum Holocaust literature.

    Ignacy Jan Paderewski (1860-1941) – światowej sławy pianista, kompozytor, polityk oraz mąż stanu i dyplomata odegrał znaczącą rolę w kształtowaniu się odrodzonego państwa polskiego i jego granic. Aktywną działalność polityczną podjął w okresie pierwszej wojny światowej. W latach 1915-1918 pozyskał dla sprawy polskiej prezydenta Stanów Zjednoczonych, Woodrowa Wilsona i jego najbliższe otoczenie polityczne oraz ponad 4-milionową Polonię amerykańską. Realny wpływ na kształtowanie się terytorium i granic państwa polskiego zyskał po objęciu urzędu premiera polskiego rządu i ministra spraw zagranicznych, co miało miejsce 16 stycznia 1919 r. Doprowadził on do uznania odrodzonego państwa polskiego na arenie międzynarodowej przez Stany Zjednoczone (30 stycznia 1919 r.), Francję (23 lutego), Wielką Brytanię (25 lutego), Włochy (27 lutego), a następnie inne państwa. Reprezentował Polskę w Paryżu jako delegat na konferencję pokojową. W trakcie kilku miesięcy obrad walczył o włączenie do państwa polskiego Galicji Wschodniej, Śląska Cieszyńskiego i Górnego Śląska oraz Gdańska wraz z Pomorzem. Wspierali go w tych działaniach znani polscy uczeni, zarówno historycy (Szymon Askenazy, Oskar Halecki, Władysław Konopczyński), jak i geografowie (Eugeniusz Romer). Razem z Romanem Dmowskim podpisał w Wersalu w dniu 28 czerwca 1919 r. traktat pokojowy kończący I wojnę światową. Po rezygnacji z funkcji premiera w dniu 9 grudnia 1919 r. i wyjeździe z kraju, nadal interesował się sprawami polskimi. Do działalności politycznej powrócił w okresie inwazji bolszewickiej na Polskę. Od lipca 1920 r. do maja 1921 r. był na prośbę rządu polskiego i naczelnika państwa Józefa Piłsudskiego polskim delegatem na konferencje międzynarodowe oraz przedstawicielem przy Lidze Narodów.
    Ignace Jan Paderewski (1860-1941) – a world-famous pianist, composer, politician, statesman and diplomat played a significant role in shaping the reborn Polish state and its borders. He undertook active political activity during the First World War. In the years 1915-1918, he acquired the President of the United States, Woodrow Wilson and his closest associates, as well as over 4 million American Polonia for the Polish cause. He gained real influence on the shaping of the territory and borders of the Polish state after taking office as the Prime Minister of the Polish Government and the Minister of Foreign Affairs. This took place on January 16, 1919. Paderewski led to the recognition of the reborn Polish state in the international arena by the United States (January 30, 1919), France (February 23), Great Britain (February 25), Italy (February 27), and then other countries. He represented Poland in Paris as a delegate to the peace conference. During the several months of deliberations he fought for the incorporation into the Polish state of Eastern Galicia, Cieszyn Silesia and Upper Silesia, as well as Gdańsk together with Pomerania. He was supported in these activities by well-known Polish scholars, both historians (Szymon Askenazy, Oskar Halecki, Władysław Konopczyński) and geographers (Eugeniusz Romer). Together with Roman Dmowski, he signed at Versailles on 28 June 1919 a peace treaty ending World War I. After resigning from the post of prime minister on December 9, 1919 and leaving the country, he was still interested in Polish affairs. He returned to political activity during the Bolshevik invasion of Poland. From July 1920 to May 1921, at the request of the Polish government and the head of state Józef Piłsudski, he was a Polish delegate to international conferences and a representative at the League of Nations.

    Founded by Danzig doctors in 1612 Collegium Medicum can be considered the first Chamber of Physicians and Dentists in the territory of the Kingdom of Poland. Its aim and objective was representing the interests of the medical pro-fession and specialist training. The medical section of The Danzig Research Society (Danziger Naturfor-schende Gesellschaft) established in 1743, was transformed into Doctors’ Society (Arztlicher Verein zu Danzig) on November 29, 1876. On May 25, 1887 Chambers of Physicians and Dentists were created in all subdivisions of the Kingdom of Prussia. Abraham Lissauer (1832–1908), a German physician and anthropologist be-came the first president of the Chamber of Physicians and Dentists of West Prussia located in Danzig. The Chamber of Physicians and Dentists in the Free City of Danzig was reactivated in 1925.

    Celem niniejszego artykułu jest analiza chrematonimów w realiach historycznych oraz ich roli jako symboli tożsamości kulturowej. Omawiane w tekście niemieckojęzyczne chrematonimy z okresu Wolnego Miasta Gdańska (WMG) 1920–1939 nie były dotąd przedmiotem analizy kulturowej. Podstawę podziału i analizy chrematonimów wyekscerpowanych na potrzeby niniejszego artykułu z druków ulotnych WMG stanowi model badawczy Artura Gałkowskiego (2011) wraz z podziałem chrematonimów w funkcji kulturowo-użytkowej na chrematonimy marketingowe, społecznościowe i ideacyjne. Analiza wykazała, iż nazwy zakodowane w drukach ulotnych są odzwierciedleniem obrazu otaczającego świata mieszkańców WMG oraz utrwalonym symbolem ich tożsamości kulturowej.
    The aim of the following article is the analysis of chrematonyms in historical reality and of their role as the symbols of cultural identity. The German language chrematonyms from the period of the Free City of Danzig covered in the following article have not been the object of the cultural analysis so far. The basis of the division and analysis of chrematonyms excerpted on the needs of the following article from the advertisement prints of the Free City of Danzig is constituted by the research model by Gałkowski (2011) together with the division of chrematonyms into marketing chrematonyms, social chrematonyms and idea-creating chrematonyms in the culturally usable function. The analysis showed that names coded in advertisement prints mirror the surrounding world of the inhabitants of the Free City of Danzig and create a fixed symbol of their cultural identity.
