    Opis:
    This article is about the Breslau Fortress water hazards, which were planned during the First World War. It contains the combined results of archival queries and field research, mostly concerning the Oder River tributaries, Ślęza and Widawa, and part of the areas that are presently irrigation fields located in the north of the city. The article also highlights the importance of the flood control system and its connection with the ring fortress. The fortifications, which were advanced in their day, consisted of a number of hydro-engineering structures, which made it possible to flood and swamp the area to protect the fortress.

    Festung Breslau ogłoszona latem 1944 r. była twierdzą tylko z nazwy. Do początku 1945 r. niewiele zrobiono, by to zmienić. Gdy 17 stycznia 1945 r. ogłoszono w mieście alarm bojowy, rozpoczęło się pospieszne formowanie garnizonu i ewakuacja cywilów. Kiedy w połowie lutego Sowieci okrążyli miasto, pozostało w nim ok. 200 tys. cywilów i 55–60 tys. żołnierzy. Nie brakowało im żywności i medykamentów, ale zapasy amunicji były bardzo skromne. Twierdza mogła się bronić tylko dzięki utworzonemu 15 lutego mostowi powietrznemu zorganizowanemu przez 6 Flotę Powietrzną. Ta zaś nie mogła istnieć bez utrzymania lotniska na Klein Gandau (Gądowie Małym), które wsparte miało być „lotniskiem miejskim” wybudowanym na gruzach dzielnicy naukowej, na osi Kaiserstrasse (pl. Grunwaldzki). Limit dostaw dobowych dla twierdzy wynosił 40 ton i początkowo udawało się go utrzymać, choć w kwietniu, po utracie Klein Gandau, spadł gwałtownie. Zasoby dostarczano początkowo lądującymi transportowymi Ju 52, później zrzucano je w zasobnikach i przesyłano szybowcami. Oprócz amunicji, broni i wyposażenia do twierdzy przybyło mostem powietrznym 1200 spadochroniarzy z 9 Dywizji Strzelców Spadochronowych, którzy istotnie wzmocnili obronę twierdzy. Z miasta zabrano 6600 żołnierzy, w tym 5225 rannych. Za ten wysiłek 6 Flota zapłaciła olbrzymią cenę. Nie dość, że straciła łącznie 147 samolotów zniszczonych i 61 poważnie uszkodzonych, to most powietrzny pochłonął ostatnie rezerwy paliwa, jakie miała upadająca III Rzesza.
    Breslau was declared to be a fortress (Festung) in the summer of 1944, but it was a fortress in name only. Up until the beginning of 1945 little had been done to change this. Then, on 17 January 1945, a combat alert was announced in the city, which resulted in a garrison being hastily formed and the evacuation of civilians. When the Soviets encircled Breslau in mid-February there was still approximately 200,000 civilians and 55–60,000 soldiers in the city. They had no shortage of food and medicine, but their ammunition supplies were very meagre. The fortress was only able to defend itself thanks to the airlift that began on 15 February, organized by the 6th Air Fleet. This airlift, in turn, could not have existed without the airport in Klein Gandau (Gądów Mały) being maintained, which was to be supported by the „city airport” that was built amongst the ruins of the scientific district at the Kaiserstrasse junction (Grunwaldzki Square). The city required 40 tons of supplies each day in order to function and it was possible to maintain this initially, although in April, after the loss of Klein Gandau, this figure dropped sharply. Resources were initially delivered by Junkers Ju 52 transport aircraft, they were later parachuted into the city in containers and were also shipped in using gliders. In addition to ammunition, weapons and equipment, 1,200 paratroopers from the 9th Parachute Rifle Division were airlifted into Breslau, which significantly strengthened the garrison. Additionally, 6,600 soldiers were airlifted out of the city, including 5,225 wounded. The 6th Air Fleet paid an enormous price for this effort. Not only did it lose a total of 147 destroyed and 61 seriously damaged planes, but the airlift also consumed the last fuel reserves of the crumbling Third Reich.
    Die Stadt Breslau, die im Sommer 1944 zur Festung ausgerufen wurde, erfüllte diese Funktion nur dem Namen nach. Bis Anfang 1945 war wenig getan worden, um dies zu ändern. Als am 17. Januar 1945 der Gefechtsalarm in der Stadt ausgerufen wurde, begannen die eilige Aufstellung einer Garnison und die Evakuierung der Zivilbevölkerung. Als die sowjetischen Truppen die Stadt Mitte Februar einkesselten, blieben dort etwa 200.000 Zivilisten und 55.000–60.000 Soldaten zurück. An Lebensmitteln und Medikamenten mangelte es nicht, doch die Munitionsvorräte waren sehr dürftig. Die Festung konnte sich nur dank der am 15. Februar von der 6. Luftflotte eingerichteten Luftbrücke verteidigen. Dies konnte nicht ohne die Aufrechterhaltung des Flugplatzes in Klein Gandau geschehen, der durch einen „Stadtflugplatz” unterstützt werden sollte, der auf den Ruinen des Wissenschaftsviertels auf der Achse der Kaiserstraße (Grunwaldzki-Platz) errichtet werden sollte. Das tägliche Versorgungslimit für die Festung lag bei 40 Tonnen und konnte zunächst aufrechterhalten werden, nach dem Verlust von Klein Gandau im April, verringerte sich diese Menge jedoch rapide. Die Lieferungen wurden zunächst mit gelandeten Ju 52-Transportern durchgeführt, später wurden sie in Containern abgeworfen und mit Segelflugzeugen überführt. Neben Munition, Waffen und Ausrüstung gelangten 1.200 Fallschirmjäger der 9. Fallschirmjägerdivision über die Luftbrücke in die Festung und verstärkten die Verteidigungsanlagen der Festung erheblich. In die andere Richtung, wurden aus der Stadt 6600 Soldaten evakuiert, darunter 5225 Verwundete. Die 6. Flotte zahlte einen hohen Preis für diesen Kraftakt. Während der Aktion wurden nicht nur insgesamt 147 Flugzeuge zerstört und 61 schwer beschädigt; die Luftbrücke kostete darüber hinaus die letzten Treibstoffreserven des kollabierenden Dritten Reichs.
