    This paper focuses on the image of Poland in the times of partitions as presented in the works by Boris Akunin on the basis of the stories entitled Where Shall We Go? andThe Flying Elephant. This image is created with the use of space (as well as sensory) mapping through the presence of toponyms, names of dishes considered to be typically Polish (the geography of taste), interweaving the text with Polonisms and (sometimes spelled in the Latin alphabet) Polish words, Polish surnames, references to religious and national stereotypes. Despite its entertaining convention (the collage of action and detective novels enriched with some elements of steampunk) the image of Poland sketched in the analyzed works is relatively credible and devoid of superpower pathos. Akunin does not exaggerate and balances the proportions between type and stereotype by dint of showing that the official political area does not reflect the real lives of coexisting communities.

    Opis:
    The main aim of this paper is to answer the question which appears in its title. In order to do so, I analyse the mind style of the eponymous character from Boris Akunin’s book The Decorator (1999). The notion of mind style coined by Roger Fowler relates to a unique correlation between certain linguistic constructions (metaphors, transitive patterns, underlexicalization) and their role in projecting particular world-views. The analysis shows that in the case of Akunin’s hero, who is inspired by the legendary Jack the Ripper, it is metaphors that serve the function of “consistent structural options”. They demonstrate how the murderer conceptualizes and interprets such concepts as MURDER, MURDERER, BODY and BEAUTY.

    The article deals with the issue of transferring intertextual cultural elements in the process of translation from Russian into Polish. The material for analysis is the fragments of the novel The Black City by Boris Akunin and its translation into Polish by Aleksandra Okuniewska-Stronka. The aim of this article is to present and evaluate the results of transferring cultural connotations and intertextual references from one culture to another. Cultural elements play a significant role in the process of the reception of the text and its translation both by the readers of the original text ‒ native language users – and by the recipients of the translated variant, belonging to a different culture. The comparison of source units and translated target units shows how different the associative circles arising in the process of text reception are. The analysis leads to the conclusion that taking into account the associative and intertextual potential of language units in translation is a very complex process. It requires a double cultural competence from the translator, and involves not only the interpretation of language signs in terms of their cultural code, but also the assessment of the interpretative abilities and capabilities of the recipients.

    The aim of the paper is to show how much sense the author of a text can convey by using words in the appropriate context. There have been analysed the words: brain, eyes, hands and blood, used by Boris Akunin as names of departments in the Amphibian organization presented in the short story Planet Water. There have been also discussed the associative sequences which may arise when one idea is understood in terms of another. Constant comparing and perceiving the relation of similarity is extremely important in the process of understanding and interpreting reality.
    Celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie na podstawie kilku przykładów, jak wiele sensu może przekazać odbiorcom autor tekstu poprzez użycie określonych słów w odpowiednim kontekście. Analizie zostały poddane cztery jednostki językowe: mózg, oczy, ręce i krew, wykorzystane przez B. Akunina do nazwania departamentów w organizacji Amfibia w opowiadaniu Planeta woda. Przedstawiono również ciągi skojarzeniowe, które mogą powstawać, kiedy pojmujemy rzeczy w terminach innych rzeczy. Nieustanne porównywanie i dostrzeganie relacji podobieństwa jest niezwykle istotne w procesie rozumienia oraz interpretowania rzeczywistości.

    Niniejszy tekst odwołuje się do publicznej biografii ostatnich lat jednego z najpoczytniejszych współczesnych rosyjskich pisarzy — Borysa Akunina. W ramach działalności politycznej Grigorij Czchartiszwili występował pod własnym nazwiskiem, aktywnie wspierając ruch antyputinowski podczas protestów 2011-2012 roku. Zdobyte w tej działalności doświadczenie oraz wydarzenia polityczne ostatnich dziesięciu lat przyniosły mu spore rozczarowanie i zaowocowały losem ekspata. Przy okazji jednak, zmobilizowany przez okoliczności, Akunin otworzył nowy projekt literacki pod tytułem История Российского Государвства (Historia państwa rosyjskiego), który ma być jego autorską próbą odpowiedzi na odwieczne pytania o Rosję. 
    Настоящая статья отсылает к публичной биографии последних лет одного из самых читаемых современных российских писателей — Бориса Акунина. В рамках своей политической деятельности писатель действовал под своим настоящим именем, активно поддерживая антипутинское движение вовремя протестов 2011–2012 года. Его жизненный опыт и политическиесобытия последних десяти лет принесли значительное разочарование и привели к судьбе эмигранта. Кстати, м обилизованный обстоятельствами Акунин основал новый литературный проект под названием «История Российского государства», который должен стать его оригинальной попыткой ответить на вечные русские вопросы.
    This article refers to the public biography of the recent years in the life of Boris Akunin, one of the most widely read among contemporary Russian writers. As part of his political activity, Akunin, or Grigori Chkhartishvili, acted under his own name and actively supported the anti-Putin movement during the 2011–2012 protests. The experience gained there and the political events of the last 10 years have left him disappointed and resulted in him becoming an expat. However, mobilized by the circumstances, Akunin launched a new literary project called История Российского Государвства (History of the Russian State), which is conceived as his original attempt to answer some of the perennial questions about Russia.

    Erast Fandorin series by Boris Akunin describes adventures of a Russian sleuth named Erast Pietrovich Fandorin who lives at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth century. The series belongs to detective story genre. The nephrite rosary, which consists of twenty-five beads, is mentioned for the first time in The Jack of Spades and plays a very significant role in most novels of the series. It is not a typical tool of religious worship or meditation, but it helps Erast Pietrovich to concentrate and to solve difficult problems. What is more, it seems to be haunted by the past. It embodies a lot of historical, legendary and spiritual energy. Being an object, a symbol and a carrier of the past, the nephrite rosary has a limited range when it comes to collective memory, because only well-educated people from the higher social classes are able to recognise the meaning of this legendary object and to perceive its importance, therefore it cannot be considered a typical lieu de memoire (place of memory), as understood by Pierre Nora. The aim of Monika Kowalska’s paper The Nephrite Rosary as a Carrier of Historical Memory in the „Erast Fandorin” series by Boris Akunin is, therefore, twofold. It analyzes the historical meaning and significance of the nephrite rosary within the eponymous series as well as presents Akunin’s inspirations and play with the worldhistory.
