Opis:
The object of the interest of the author of the article is the problem of relations between preaching and the late-baroque religious poetry. On the example of a few Wacław Potocki's (1621-1696) works from the collection `Ogród nie plewiony' most often defined by the poet as `theological paradoxes' (paradoxa theologica), analogies are shown between poetry and the baroque religious rhetoric, first of all seen in the construction of the utterance, defined in baroque theory of poetry and prose as predicatory concept (conceptus praedicabilis, concetto predicabile). A confrontation of Potocki's epigrams with the late-baroque predicatory prose leads to the conclusion about only a partial imitation of the baroque concept-preachers' practice resulting from the poet's traditionalism and his unfavourable attitude towards his contemporary literary and predicatory `news'.

Pomimo skąpych informacji o pisarzu i jego twórczości w opracowaniach naukowych, nawet krótkie wzmianki o poecie zawierają pochlebnie opinie o nim, akcentujące przede wszystkim dużą wartość jednego dzieła – Symfonii anielskich.
The aim of this article is an attempt at popularizing Jan Żabczyc’s writings. Żabczyc was a very popular early Baroque court poet who nowadays seems to be unappreciated and lost among the great names of his times. He was well acclaimed in his lifetime, but since 18th century, when a change in literary tastes took place, his legacy started to sink into oblivion. There is not too much information concerning his life and activity in the critical works, those authors who mention him, however, regard his poems as works of high literary value, emphasizing one particular collection of his poems (Christmas carols) Symfonie anielskie. Żabczyc is best known for his carols, but he was also able to show literary skill in his other poems. Certainly his writings deserve to be discovered anew, and in effect appreciated again.

The paper is dedicated to recognising Sarmatian motifs in poetic collections of Jerzy Harasymowicz. The analysis of selected works proves that the poet had an excellent preparation for interpreting old literature. Poems written by Harasymowicz are the evidence of both his familiarity with aesthetic conventions of the Baroque period and his knowledge of historical themes of the 17th century. Historism was treated by the writer as a reservoir of motifs and characters, which were a point of reference for the diagnosis of the current political situation in the 70s of the last century.

The article examines the image of George II Rákóczi, Prince of Transylvania, who led an unsuccessful armed invasion of the Commonwealth in 1657, in the Polish literature of the 17th century. Although somewhat stereotypical, the image created by Rákóczi’s contemporaries was richer than the one created in the following centuries because either the writers knew Rákóczi personally or they were dignitaries, officials, or soldiers who participated in the same events as he did. Literary texts that refer to Rákóczi can be divided chronologically into three groups, the first includes texts written before Rákóczi’s military invasion of the Commonwealth, the second group covers texts written during the invasion, and the third one – texts written after Rákóczi’s defeat (and his later death). This study also addresses some issues related to individual and collective memory as well as the symbols used back then in the portrayals of George II Rákóczi.

Opis:
The article specifies the role of rationalism in the work of a distinguished Baroque author, Łukasz Opaliński. The source material for the study consists of: Rozmowa Plebana z Ziemianinem (1641), Polonia defensa contra Ioan[nem] Barclaium (1648), Coś nowego (1652), Pauli Naeoceli de officiis libri tres (1659), Poeta nowy (1661–1662).Łukasz Opaliński stated that reason is the most important cognitive faculty of the human being. Reason makes it possible to understand the rules of natural law, which is the source of ethical action among humans, and brings on understanding of the eschatological aim of human life, that is salvation. The possibilities of rational explanation do not, however, encompass the mysteries of religious faith or the basic concepts of natural philosophy, such as the elements, which are the principal components of matter.Rationalism belongs to the principal ideas of Opaliński’s political philosophy. He opted for a rational organization of the state and for rational ways of solving social problems (he underscored the role of common sense, rational dialogue of citizens and rational responsibility for the common good). The political formation that is best suited for rationalization of social life is monarchy. Seeing it as a model government, the author realised that it could not be introduced in the Poland of the 17th century, and consequently, apart from the eulogy of the monarchy, he proposed improvements in gentry democracy, especially in limiting of the “golden freedom”.An important sphere of externalization of Opaliński’s rationalist ideals was his theoretical thought on literature. He critically evaluated some examples of Baroque art of conceit. He underscored the role of rational sources of creativity and rational discipline in structuring a literary work, and his postulates in this field were close to the concepts of classicist criticism.

The article deals with the issue of the perception of small Polish towns by authors of literary works from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Due to the fact that this type of settlements prevailed in the urban landscape of our country, it is interesting whether the authors gave them any attention and, if so, what problems of the towns were raised. The analysis shows that this topic was marginally discussed. Towns in general, even the largest ones, did not enjoy any particular interest of artists. Small towns, however, most often appear as a collective entity. What drew artists’ attention were wooden buildings, which often constitute the towns’ weakness. The authors devote a little more attention to urban craftsmen, having the worst opinion about them. However, these are essentially the views of the nobility, thus show its negative attitude towards towns and townspeople.

The baroque writer used exclusively brief statements which confirm the truth of the Roman faith and simultaneously debunk arguments in favor of Protestant religion. Above all his work was supposed to provide polemical ammunition for the supporters of the Roman Catholic Church and to justify discontinuing relations with Protestantism. In order to achieve this purpose, the writer enumerated and discussed arguments related to the most important arguable theological issues, such as the apostolic succession, miracles, attitude to God’s Word, religious life, celibacy, the figure of Luther and his adherents, etc.

The article deals with the ways in which Baroque works and their authors were presented in the positivist history of literature. The source material for the analysis was provided by the texts written by Piotr Chmielowski, Stanisław Tarnowski, Adam Bełcikowski, Henryk Sienkiewicz and Felicjan Faleński. The article discusses the sources for a rather distinct dislike of the literary output of Baroque authors in general, which was in line with the then well-established opinions deeply rooted in European research, but also derived from a valuation based on national and patriotic criteria. A certain differentiation in research methods is also indicated, mostly of those stemming from the spirit of Taine, but, occasionally, approaching Baroque works with the help of a stylistic analysis and thus making it possible to show more appreciation to the literature created in the period that, as understood from the positivist perspective, was believed to be of inferior quality.

The article is devoted to criticism of prophecies presented by Wojciech Bystrzonowski, an encyclopaedist and a science popularizer, in his work “Informacyja matematyczna” [“Mathematical Information”] (1743, 1749). The author discusses prophecies of sorcerers, physiognomy, palmistry, prophetic dreams and astrological predictions. He examines the cases of combining magical practices with religious beliefs, which he regards as dangerous signs of spreading superstitions. He also shows that prophecy cannot be compatible with faith and fundamental principles of rational reasoning. Furthermore, he emphasizes that in the critical evaluation of prophecy a Jesuit principle of discernment of spirits can be applied. The issues covered in his work are characteristic of the atmosphere of the intellectual change that took place at the turn of the Baroque and the Enlightenment.

This article is divided into two parts. The first – historical and literary – part offers information about a baroque Dominican writer, Tomasz Nargielewicz (d. 1700), and about a Latin writer, Lucan, whose epic poem Pharsalia was translated into Polish prose by Nargielewicz, who entitled it Historyja wojny między Pompejuszem i Julijuszem (The History of the War between Pompey and Julius). His work is not a faithful translation, but a strong paraphrase, as Nargielewicz omits, elaborates, and rearranges many fragments of the original poem. Due to the fact that he was a Dominican, Nargielewicz added Christian elements to the text. Furthermore, this part of the article will also address the question of whether in his work Nargielewicz made use of the translations of Lucan’s poem by two other baroque poets, John Alan Bardziński and Adalbertus Stanislaus Chrościński. The second – analytical and editorial – part of the article presents excerpts from Nargielewicz’s work, which has never been transcribed before, such as the one that describes Cato the Younger and fragments containing speeches. The speakers who deliver them are: Vulteius (the captain of a Roman ship), Cato (in the temple of Ammon), Achoreus (at a feast at the court of Ptolemy Dionysus), and Cleopatra (at the time of death). The article also presents the final part of the text, where the Christian flavour is most evident.
