The text concerns the creation of the first Baroque chapel erected at the southern aisle of the Wrocław cathedral in 1672, and its interior. The founder of the chapel was Wrocław Canon Johann Jakob Brunetti (1629–1692), who came from Massa di Carrara, Tuscany and was laid to rest in the chapel’s crypt along with his brother Johann (1646–1703), the assistant bishop. Despite its modest size the work deserves attention for its preserved decor – the altar and two epitaphs made of Dębnik marble and rich acanthus frieze, contrasting with the dome’s vault, decorated with coffers and rosettes. The applied forms indicate good knowledge of both Italian Renaissance and early Baroque traditions displayed by the designer of the work, Carlo Rossi, who came from the vicinity of Como, Lombardy. It makes the chapel an interesting work of art of dual stylistic character, which along with the chapel of St. Cross at the Church of BVM on Piasek Island, initiated the erection of further works of this type at the cathedral and at the Dominican and Premonstratensian churches in Wrocław.

Artykuł podejmuje problem analizy rozpowszechnienia szczególnej techniki barokowej stosowanej w projektowaniu fasad budynków monumentalnych na Dolnym Śląsku. Po raz pierwszy metodę tę wykorzystał w swych rzymskich aranżacjach Francesco Borromini. Dlatego nazwa tej techniki pojawia się najczęściej w literaturze pod włoskim określeniem parete ondulata. Ten sposób formowania fasad rozpowszechnił się szybko krajach europejskich, gdzie przyjmowały się formy nieklasycznego baroku, w tym na Dolnym Śląsku. Metoda elewacji wklęsło-wypukłej dawała bowiem duże możliwości w kreowaniu przyciągającej uwagę architektury i umożliwiała wyszukaną aranżację wnętrz urbanistycznych o silnym oddziaływaniu na odbiorcę. Metoda parete ondulata nie została przyswojona w lokalnej architekturze śląskiej. Większość budowli, które prezentują tę formę powstała na podstawie projektów Kiliana Ignaca Dientzenhofera. Poza tym metoda w zredukowanej formie została też zastosowana w kilku przypadkach przez architektów austriackich działających na Śląsku (J. B. Peintner, Ch. Hackner). W ciasnych wnętrzach urbanistycznych technika parete ondulata umożliwiała silniejsze oddziaływanie. Jednak na Śląsku wykorzystano ją tylko w pałacowych fasadach pierzei ulicznych we Wrocławiu - pałac Hatzfeldów i Uniwersytet Wrocławski oraz drobnych formach stosowanych w architekturze w latach 1715-1740, np. w portalach. Pomimo to, tych kilka dzieł architektury monumentalnej wzniesionych na Dolnym Śląsku z użyciem omawianej techniki prezentuje się jako dzieła wybitne w skali ogólnoeuropejskiej o indywidualnych, lokalnych cechach. Ze względu na twórców, wykazują również powinowactwo z kręgiem austriackim i czeskim.
The article aims to analyze the use of the Baroque convex-concave design technique, from the point of view of town-planning and architecture, for the facades of monumental buildings in Lower Silesia. For the first time this method was used in its Roman creations by Francesco Borromini. Hence, most often in the literature it appears under the Italian designation parete ondulata. Relatively quickly this technique became widespread in other European countries, in which non-Classical forms were being adopted, also in Lower Silesia. The convex-concave method of designing facades gave architects the possibility of creating attractive architecture and of designing sophisticated urban interiors that had a strong impact on the recipient. The parete ondulata method was not assimilated into the local Silesian architecture. Most of the buildings that present such forms were built on the basis of designs prepared by Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer and, in a reduced form, in several cases by Austrian architects active in Silesia (J. B. Peintner, Ch. Hackner). In cramped urban locations the parete ondulata technique provided the opportunity for making a stronger impression. However, in Silesia it was only applied in the facades of the Hatzfeld Palace and the University in Wrocław and in small architectural forms such as portals built in 1715–1740. Nevertheless, these few works of monumental architecture in Lower Silesia erected with the use of this technique present themselves as an outstanding achievement on the European scale with individual local characteristics. Because of the people who designed them, they also show an affinity with Austrian and Bohemian architecture.

Zakon NMP z Góry Karmel pojawił się na Śląsku pod koniec XIV wieku, kiedy to powstał jedyny tutejszy klasztor w Strzegomiu, zlikwidowany jednak w okresie reformacji. Dopiero po zakończeniu wojny trzydziestoletniej udało się go odzyskać oraz założyć trzy nowe placówki: w Głębowicach, Wołowie i Kożuchowie. Kluczową rolę w ich powstaniu odegrał baron Johann Adam de Garnier, pochodzący z Alzacji pułkownik wojsk cesarskich, właściciel dóbr w Głębowicach. Dwa pierwsze ośrodki to okazałe założenia barokowe, o bogato wyposażonych świątyniach. Natomiast ostatni z wymienionych to średniowieczny zamek, przekazany zakonnikom pod koniec XVII wieku i zaadoptowany na klasztor, co stanowi obok należącego do jezuitów Otynia jedyny tego rodzaju przypadek na Śląsku. Artykuł przedstawia dorobek artystyczny śląskich karmelitów w oparciu o dotychczasowy stan badań oraz podkreśla rolę fundatora. Jest również próbą ocenienia wkładu zakonu w rozwój kultury i sztuki barokowej na Śląsku, który ze względu na niewielką liczbę klasztorów, zwłaszcza w porównaniu z sąsiednimi obszarami Rzeczypospolitej, jest skromny. Tekst akcentuje także nieobecność na tym obszarze zreformowanej gałęzi zgromadzenia, czyli karmelitów bosych. Chociaż dorobek zakonu trudno porównać z imponującą spuścizną cystersów czy jezuitów, którzy zdominowali sferę religijną i artystyczną potrydenckiego Kościoła katolickiego na Śląsku, niemniej zasługuje on na zainteresowanie badaczy różnych dziedzin kultury i sztuki.
The Order of The Brothers of The Most Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel arrived in Silesia late in the 14th century, when its first monastery was established in Strzegom. It was however liquidated during the Reformation. Only after the end of the Thirty Years’ War was it successfully regained, and three new locations were opened in Głębowice, Wołów, and Kożuchów. Baron Johann Adam de Garnier, a colonel of the imperial army hailing from Alsace, owner of the estate in Głębowice, played a major role in their design and development. The first two centres are impressive Baroque projects with lavishly furnished churches, while the third is a mediaeval castle entrusted to the monks late in the 17th century and adapted into a monastery, which, besides the Jesuit Otyń, is considered a singularity in Silesia. The essay presents the artistic achievement of Silesian Carmelites based on the state-of-the-art research and emphasises the role of the founder. It is also an attempt at assessing the contribution of the Order to the development of Baroque culture and art in Silesia, which is modest, especially when compared to the neighbouring regions of the Commonwealth of Poland–Lithuania. It also emphasised the absence of the reformed branch of the Order, that is the Discalced Carmelites, in the area. Although the achievements of the Carmelites would be difficult to compare with the impressive heritage of Cistercians and Jesuits who dominated the religious and artistic realm of post-Tridentine Catholic Church in Silesia, it nonetheless merits the interest of researchers in various fields of culture and art.

Tekst jest podsumowaniem wyników badań architektonicznych Pałacu Kazanowskich, jednej z największych rezydencji Warszawy w 1. połowy XVII w. Dzięki nim udało się ustalić pierwotną XVII-wieczną formę budowli. Rekonstrukcja planu pozwoliła na powiązanie pomieszczeń z fragmentami wierszowanego opisu z r. 1643, co umożliwiło poznanie wystroju i wyposażenia istotnych wnętrz pałacu. Zrekonstruowana forma pałacu pozwoliła także na rozważania na temat autorstwa projektu.
An attempt is made at summing up the results of the architectural research into the Kazanowski Palace, one of the largest Warsaw residences in the first half of the 17th century. Thanks to the research into the structure of the former Palace preserved in the walls of the later Convent of the Discalced Carmelites it has been possible to identify the genuine 17th-century form of an asymmetrical palace with the main body and two wings. This layout, as it turned out, substantially differed from the Palace’s reconstructions so-far existing in literature. The uncovering on the Palace’s walls also allowed an almost full reconstruction of the disposition of its rooms and elevation fragments, e.g., attics. As seen against Warsaw architecture of the period, the plan of the piano nobile seemed quite peculiar. It contained two tracts of reception rooms: one in the Palace’s main body, the other in the northern outbuilding. Both tracts began with sizeable dining rooms, and leading through subsequent antechambers (partially exerting additional functions of, e.g., a library), they led to the lord’s reception bedroom located at the point where the main body bordered on the outbuilding. All this seems to be in line with court protocol which Adam Kazanowski, Marshal of the Court of the Crown, must have been well acquainted with. Next to the master’s apartment there was an apartment of his spouse, the two interconnected by a chapel. The reconstruction of the layout also allowed to associate respective rooms with fragments of a rhymed description of the building which Adam Jarzębski contained in his Gościniec [Guide to Warsaw]  from 1643, this helping to reconstruct the décor and furnishing of all the important Palace’s rooms, Moreover, the reconstructed 17th-century shape of the Palace allowed to undertake considerations related to the residence’s designer. It is known from the sources that while the Palace was being built, fee was paid to the architect and stonemason Constantino Tencalli, yet design solutions suggest that Giovanni Battista Gisleni may have participated in the designing process.

The article attempts to characterize the transformation of the architecture of Dominican monasteries in Silesia in the post-Tridentine period with regard to their new relation to urban space. Describing the reconstruction of their cloisters and churches from those times, it specifies how the order accepted the council's recommendations concerning the design and visual prominence of the facades of churches.

The paper is an attempt to evaluate the geological and quarrying conditions of the Blessed Salomea “marble”. Its physico-mechanicalproperties were determined in relation to the lithology. The probable volume of excavated rock material was compared to the volume of the small architecture elements, mainly altars and tombstones made of this stone. The comparison indicates that the rocks with similar colour and physico-mechanical properties occur also within other outcrops of Upper Jurassic limestones in the vicinity of Cracow. The “marble” of Blessed Salomea is distinguishable due to its otherfeatures. Besides the ability to take polish, these include the possibilities of cutting very large blocks and ability to be carved for figural and ornamental sculpture. These characteristics are related to the homogeneity caused by the large amount of micrite. So far, no other Jurassic limestone with these distinguishing properties has been found.

Budynek dawnego kolegium pijarów w Chełmie – ulokowany przy ulicy Lubelskiej, nieopodal późnobarokowego kościoła Rozesłania Świętych Apostołów – stanowi obecnie siedzibę Muzeum Ziemi Chełmskiej im. Wiktora Ambroziewicza. Dotychczas nie wzbudzał większego zainteresowania badaczy i – jawiąc się jako dzieło architektury pozbawione wyrazistych cech stylowych – nie był przedmiotem naukowej refleksji. Sytuację tę zmienia ujawnienie w zbiorach Archivio Generale delle Scuole Pie w Rzymie zachowanego rysunku z 1698 roku, przedstawiającego ów budynek w rzucie poziomym i w ujęciu aksonometrycznym. Informacje zawarte w dokumentach pisanych przechowywanych w tymże archiwum pozwalają ustalić czas budowy na lata 1698-1700. Projekt dowodzi, że zachowany gmach nie zmienił zasadniczo swej bryły, jednopiętrowej, założonej na planie litery H. Innowacje ograniczyły się tylko do partii dachu nad korpusem głównym, który pierwotnie był dachem krakowskim, oraz do dokonanego w latach 1720-1724 przedłużenia jednego z bocznych skrzydeł (tak by kolegium połączyć z kościołem). Przekształcenia późniejsze nie naruszyły też w sposób zasadniczy podziałów wewnętrznych, w dwuipółtraktowym korpusie głównym, z wprowadzonym tam komunikacyjnym układem krzyżowo-korytarzowym, oraz w jednotraktowych skrzydłach bocznych. Kształt budowli tudzież surowość opracowania jej elewacji, reprezentujących barok w jego odmianie klasycyzującej, wskazują na osobę projektanta – to zapewne Józef Piola, architekt działający w Warszawie na przełomie XVII i XVIII wieku, realizujący podówczas na zlecenie zakonu pijarów również ich zespół kościelno-klasztorny w Szczuczynie. Natomiast dokonane w 1 połowie XVIII wieku przedłużenie skrzydła kolegium należy najpewniej wiązać z osobą innego stołecznego architekta – Karola Antoniego Baya, który w tym samym czasie, wraz ze swym zięciem, Vincenzo Rachettim, także architektem, wykonywał dla pijarów z Chełma oszacowanie dochodowości ich parceli położonej na przedmieściach miasta Lublina. Gmach w Chełmie pełnił funkcję zakonnego kolegium, a w pewnych okresach także profesorium, w którym wyższe nauki z filozofii pobierali pijarscy klerycy. Wbrew pojawiającym się sugestiom nigdy nie mieściła się w nim prowadzona przez pijarów szkoła publiczna. Ta pojawiła się tutaj – jako gimnazjum rosyjskie – dopiero po powstaniu styczniowym i kasacie domu zakonnego Scholarum Piarum.
The building of the old College of Piarist in Chełm – located on Lubelska Street, near the late baroque Church of Holy Apostles the Messengers – is now the seat of the Wiktor Ambroziewicz Chełm Land Museum. Until now, it has not raised much interest among researchers and – appearing as a work of architecture devoid of expressive style features – has not been the subject of scientific reflection. This situation is changed by the disclosure of the preserved drawing from 1698, showing the building in a horizontal projection and axonometric view, stored in the Archivio Generale delle Scuole Pie in Rome. The information contained in written documents kept there allow to determine the time of construction of the building for the years 1698-1700. The project proves that the preserved edifice did not change substantially its one-story block, set on the plan of the letter H. The innovations concerned only the roof part over the main body, which was originally the Krakow roof, and the extension of one of the side wings in 1720-1724 (so that the college was connected to the church). Neither did the subsequent transformations significantly affect the internal divisions, be it in the two-and-a-half tract main corpus, with the cross-corridor communication system introduced therein, or in the single tract side wings. The shape of the building and the severity of the development of its facade, representing the baroque in its classicizing version, suggests the designer – Giuseppe Piola, an architect working in Warsaw at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, building, at the request of the Piarist order, also their church and monastery complex in Szczuczyn. However, the extension of the college wing made in the first half of the 18th century should probably be associated with the person of another capital architect – Carlo Antonio Bay, who at the same time, together with his son-in-law, Vincenzo Rachetti, also an architect, made calculations for the Piarist priests from Chełm for the profitability of their parcel located in the suburbs of the city of Lublin. The building in Chełm was a monastic college, and at certain times also a “profesorium”, in which Piarist clerics learned philosophy at a higher level of education. Contrary to some suggestions, there was never a public school run by the Piarists in this building. It was founded – as a Russian gymnasium – only after the January Uprising and the dissolution of the Scholarum Piarum community.

Najwcześniejszym dziełem Pompea Ferrariego w Polsce był projekt kaplicy elektorskiej przy katedrze we Wrocławiu, wykonany w 1704 roku. Znamy dwa rysunki ukazujące przekrój podłużny, umożliwiające rekonstrukcję oraz identyfikację genezy form architektonicznych i rzeźbiarskich. Architekt, dwukrotny laureat konkursów Akademii św. Łukasza, zaprojektował dzieło odzwierciedlające aktualnie panujące w Rzymie koncepcje barokowego eklektyzmu. Polegały one na łączeniu w jednym dziele aklasycznych form stworzonych przez architektów dojrzałego baroku (P. da Cortonę, G.L. Berniniego. F. Borrominiego, A. Pozza i C. Rainaldiego) z formami klasycznymi zdefiniowanymi przez artystów renesansu, wczesnego baroku oraz tradycję antyczną. Procesy te silnie ujawniały się w nauczaniu w Akademii św. Łukasza – przykładami są: konkurs z 1694 roku i nagroda dla A. Speronego (Speroniego), czy konkurs z 1696 roku i projekty A. Rossiniego, L. Rusconiego-Sassiego i B. Spinellego. Równolegle, w 4 ćwierci XVII wieku, powstawały w Rzymie kaplice i kościoły o cechach eklektycznego baroku. Próby łączenia elementów języka tych dwóch tradycji widoczne są na projekcie wrocławskim. Występuje w nim klasyczna, renesansowa struktura porządków architektonicznych, łączona z cebulową kopułą, dynamiczną kolumnadą z wybrzuszonymi elementami belkowania. W projekcie ołtarza odnajdujemy motywy z dzieł Berniniego, Borrominiego i Carla Fontany – najważniejszego moderatora eklektycznego podejścia przy projektowaniu architektury. Projekt Ferrariego, choć nie został zrealizowany, należał do najwcześniejszych przykładów transmisji najnowszych tendencji artystycznych w Rzymie, z których wyewoluował późny barok w Europie Środkowo-Wschodniej.
Pompeo Ferrari’s earliest work in Poland was the design of the Elector’s Chapel at the cathedral in Wroclaw, made in 1704. We know of two drawings showing a longitudinal cross-section, allowing reconstruction and identification of the genesis of the architectural and sculptural forms. The architect, a two-time winner of the St. Luke’s Academy competitions, designed a work reflecting the currently prevailing concepts of Baroque eclecticism in Rome. These consisted in combining in one work the aclassical forms created by architects of the mature Baroque period (P. da Cortona, G.L. Bernini. F. Borromini, A. Pozzo and C. Rainaldi) with classical forms defined by Renaissance and early Baroque architects and the ancient tradition. These processes were strongly manifested in the teaching at St. Luke’s Academy – examples are the 1694 competition and the prize for A. Sperone (Speroni) or the 1696 competition and the designs of A. Rossini, L. Rusconi-Sassi and B. Spinelli. At the same time, in the fourth quarter of the 17th century, chapels and churches with eclectic Baroque features were being built in Rome. Attempts to combine elements of the language of these two traditions can be seen on the Wroclaw project. It features a classical Renaissance structure of architectural orders, combined with an onion-shaped dome, a dynamic colonnade with bulging elements of the entablature. In the design of the altarpiece we find motifs from the works of Bernini, Borromini and Carlo Fontana, the most important moderator of the eclectic approach in architectural design. Although not realized, Ferrari’s design was among the earliest examples of the transmission of the latest artistic tendencies in Rome, from which the late Baroque in Central and Eastern Europe evolved.

Problematykę biskupiego pałacu czy też willi w Broku podejmowano w licznych opracowaniach. Niemal całkowite zniszczenie zabytku utrudniało jednak prowadzenie pogłębionych badań nad jego pierwotną architekturą i zdefiniowanie kręgu potencjalnych budowniczych. Funkcja budowli oraz jej nazewnictwo również pozostawało niejasne, ponieważ w niektórych materiałach określano ją jako zamek. Na podstawie dokumentacji wizualnej i dotychczas nieznanych oraz niewykorzystanych źródeł pisanych przedstawiono w artykule nowe ustalenia na temat architektury pałacu, umożliwiające jego pełną rekonstrukcję. Ustalenia te nie tylko uzupełniają w istotny sposób historię budowy, ale też otwierają interesujące perspektywy badawcze dotyczące kwestii genezy stylistycznej, wykonawstwa, funkcji, znaczenia, wreszcie miejsca, jakie pałac zajmował w architekturze rezydencjonalnej Polski 1. ćwierci XVII stulecia.
The issue of the episcopal palace – or villa – in Brok has been addressed in numerous studies. The nearly complete destruction of the structure, however, made it difficult to conduct in-depth research into its original architecture and to define the circle of its potential builders. The function of the building and the relevant terminology were unclear as well, since some sources referred to it as a castle. On the basis of visual documentation and hitherto unknown and unused written sources, the article presents new findings on the architecture of the palace, enabling its full reconstruction. These findings not only materially supplement its construction history, but also open up interesting research perspectives on the questions of the palace’s stylistic origins, the builders involved in its construction, its function, significance, and finally the place it occupied in the residential architecture of Poland in the first quarter of the 17th century.

Architecture has always been a means of expressing world viewpoints that are governing in a given society. Gothic architecture expressed man's desire to come closer to divine infinity. Gothic cathedrals would combine two worlds separated by an infinite metaphysical distance. Baroque architecture attempted to include in the vertical scheme the whole heritage of the passing and the temporal: aspects of nature, human existence and the richness of human spirituality. All this in a temporal, diachronic aspect, an aspect subjected to constant change, an aspect full of energy, dynamics and motion. The 20th century introduced trends that attempted to unite the visible world with the divine. Matter was divine and the divinity was material. This pantheistic interpretation of nature was reflected in architecture. Will Christian architecture come to an end or will it triumph? Will architecture be a stumblingblock or a spring-board for the Christian faith? This triumph will not be achieved by looking for new arguments in the never-ending debate, but through a better understanding of Christian Revelation, which is known but superficially, both by Christians and their adversaries. That is the reason why architecture contains and expresses merely a general outline of Christian doctrine. Ideas expressed in other architectural styles also have a superficial influence.

Artykuł poświęcony grupie studiów Giovanniego Battisty Gisleniego (1600–1672), zawierających kilka odmiennych wariantów projektu kościoła Karmelitanek Bosych we Lwowie (realizacja 1641–1648 i 1683–1688). Jest także próbą ustalenia roli, jaką w procesie twórczym odgrywał nie tylko architekt-projektant i przepisy zakonu karmelitów bosych, lecz także fundator-zleceniodawca i określone przez niego wymagania.
The article is devoted to a group of studies by Giovanni Battista Gisleni (1600–1672) containing several different variants of the design for the church of the Discalced Carmelite nuns in Lvov (constructed in 1641–1648 and 1683–1688). It also attempts to establish the role played in the creative process not only by the architect-designer and the regulations of the Order of Discalced Carmelites, but also by the founder who commissioned the work and the requirements set by him.

Artykuł omawia wyniki badań architektonicznych pałacu w Siestrzechowicach koło Nysy. Na wstępie przedstawiono opis obiektu oraz omówiono dotychczasową literaturę. W świetle przeprowadzonych badań budowę pałacu osadzono w latach 1592–94, a jako jego fundatora wskazano Andrzeja von Jerin, sędziego biskupiego. Pierwotne założenie, w typie Palazzo in Fortezza, wzniesiono na prostokątnym plateau o wymiarach około 60 × 90 metrów, wzmocnionym czterema bastionami i otoczonym fosą. Rezydencję zbudowano na rzucie zbliżonym do prostokąta o wymiarach około 32,7 na 37 metrów. Trójskrzydłowe założenie rozplanowano wokół dziedzińca z krużgankiem, ze ścianą parawanową od południa. Elewacje otrzymały regularną kompozycję z fastiowymi opaskami oraz ramową dekoracją sgraffitową, a fasadę podkreślono kostkowym półkolistym portalem z herbami biskupa wrocławskiego i właścicieli. Wnętrza skrzydła północnego założono w układzie dwutraktowym trzypasmowym, a w bocznych jako jednotraktowe. Na osi umieszczono sień, po jej wschodniej stronie izbę z polichromowanym stropem, a po zachodniej dwie duże sklepione sale. W 1609 roku jedną z nich przekształcono w kaplicę, której wnętrze ozdobiono polichromowaną dekoracją obejmującą m.in. herby biskupów Andrzeja von Jerin i Karola Austriackiego oraz kartusze herbowe rodzin szlacheckich związanych z dworem biskupim w Nysie. Pierwsza poważna przebudowa miała miejsce w 1730 roku w związku z przekazaniem pałacu przez księcia biskupa elektora Franciszka Ludwika von Pfalz-Neuburg pod zarząd naczelnego szpitala biskupiego w Nysie. Bryłę wzbogacono o wieżę na osi fasady oraz powiększono o skrzydło południowe pałacu. Zmieniono wystrój elewacji, wprowadzając gładki detal na fakturowanym tle. Kolejny etap przekształceń miał miejsce prawdopodobnie w II połowie XIX wieku, gdy wnętrza skrzydła zachodniego zaadaptowano na gorzelnię, natomiast na dziedzińcu w miejsce krużganków renesansowych wprowadzono nowe, neogotyckie. Po wojnie pałac użytkowany był przez PGR, w 1963 roku zawaliła się wieża. Prace zabezpieczające rozpoczęto w latach 70., rezygnując z odbudowy wieży. Niestety brak właściciela spowodował zawalenie się stropów skrzydła wschodniego. Rozpoczęte w 2010 roku prace, których jednym z etapów były badania architektoniczne, mają na celu uratowanie obiektu i jego rewaloryzację z wydobyciem zatartych historycznych form.
The article presents the results of architectural research on the palace at Siestrzechowice near Nysa. At the beginning a description of the object is presented and the current literature is discussed. In the light of the research carried out, the palace was constructed in the years 1592–94 and it was funded by Andreas von Jerin, a bishop’s judge. The original Palazzo in Fortezza was erected on an about 60/90-metres rectangular plateau, reinforced with four bastions and surrounded by a moat. The residence was built on an about 32.7/ 37-metre rectangle-like plan. The three-winged structure was planned around a galleried courtyard, with a partition wall from the south. The façade received a regular composition with fascia and framed sgraffi to decorations, and the façade was emphasized with a rusticated, semi-circular portal with the coats of arms of the Bishop of Wrocław and the palace owners. The interiors of the north wing were laid out in a two-section three crosswise-section system and it contained side wings as one-section system. Along the axis there is a hallway, on the east side there is a room with a polychrome ceiling, and on the west side there are two large vaulted rooms. In 1609, one of the rooms was transformed into a chapel and its interior was decorated with polychrome decorations including the coats of arms of bishop Andreas von Jenin and Charles of Austria and the coat of arms of noble families associated with the bishop’s court in Nysa. The first major reconstruction took place in 1730, in connection with the transfer of the palace by Bishop Elector Franz Ludwig von Pfalz-Neuburg to the management of the bishop’s main hospital in Nysa. The building was enriched with a tower that was built along the façade axis and the south wing of the palace was added. The design of the façade was changed by introducing a smooth detail on a textured background. The next stage of transformation probably took place in the second half of the 19th century, when the west-wing interior was adapted to a distillery, while in the courtyard new neo-Gothic galleries were introduced in place of the Renaissance ones. After the Second World War the palace was used by a state farm. In 1963 the tower collapsed. Security works began in the 1970s but the tower was not subjected to reconstruction. Unfortunately, the lack of the owner caused the collapse of the ceilings in the east wing. Further works started in 2010 and included an architectural research as one of the stages. They aimed at protecting the object and restoring its valuable historical forms.

Artykuł prezentuje historię powstania i przekształceń klasztoru sióstr Magdalenek w Szprotawie od pierwszej połowy XIV do początków XIX wieku. We wstępie przedstawiono opis klasztoru oraz informacje źródłowe i kronikarskie, a także dotychczasową literaturę. Na podstawie przeprowadzonych badań architektonicz- nych i analizy detalu wydzielono najważniejsze fazy przekształceń budowli. Początki istniejącego skrzydła klasztoru osadzono około roku 1314, gdy konwent magdalenek został przeniesiony z Bytomia Odrzańskiego. Prawdopodobnie u schyłku XIV wieku lub na początku kolejnego stulecia rozbudowano go w kierunku południowym i wschodnim. Klasztor przebudowano pod koniec XVI lub na początku XVII wieku, a następnie po pożarach w latach 1672 i 1702. Zabudo- wania zostały opuszczone przez konwent po sekularyzacji dóbr klasztornych w roku 1810. Na omówionych w tekście badaniach architektonicznych można się było oprzeć przy podejmowaniu decyzji m.in. o zakresie prac konserwatorskich i rekonstrukcyjnych.
This paper presents the history of the construction and transformation of the Magdalene sisters’ convent in Szprotawa from the first half of the fourteenth century to the early nineteenth century. The introduction presents a description of the abbey, source and chronicle information, as well as the literature written to date. Based on architectural research and detail analysis, key phases of the building’s transformation were isolated and identified. The beginnings of the existing wing of the abbey were determined to be around 1314, when the convent was relocated from Bytom Odrzański. At the end of the fourteenth century or the beginning of the next, it was probably extended to the south and east. The abbey was rebuilt at the end of the sixteenth, or in the early seventeenth century, and again after fires in 1672 and 1702. The buildings were abandoned by the convent after its property’s secularization in 1810. The architectural research discussed provided a basis for decision-making on the scope of conservation andreconstruction work.

Artykuł prezentuje wykorzystanie technik zapożyczonych z rzeźby – reliefu niskiego do wysokiej płaskorzeźby – w projektach architektonicznych czasu baroku. Technika reliefu perspektywicznego była wynalazkiem renesansu. Jednak wszystkie jej możliwości wyzyskali dopiero projektanci barokowi. Barokowi artyści operowali szeroką gamą nasileń cienia nadających różne wartości plam światłocieniowych i wszelkich efektów modelowania rysunku na elewacji. Śmiało łączyli techniki iluzyjne, poczynając od zastępowania architektury malarstwem, przez stosowanie iluzji optycznej, anamorfoz aż do rodzaju stałych dekoracji.
The article presents the use of techniques borrowed from sculpture – bas to highreliefs in architectural projects in the time of Baroque. The technique of illusionistic relief was the invention of the Renaissance. However, all its possibilities were not exploited sooner than by the Baroque designers. The Baroque artists operated with a range of all intensity of shadow, creating the different values of the chiaroscuro spots and any effects of modelling drawing on the facade. They connected the illusionistic techniques, starting with replacing the architecture by painting, by use of the optical illusion, anamorphoses up to making a kind of scenographic models.
