The text indicates connections between a woman and a water element that are deeply rooted in culture. It mentions images of the relation between those two themes in Maria Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska’s poetry. The author of the essay analyses the poetics of the animation and looks for the features which create the etude’s universal character.

In his etude Mother Earth Piotr Złotorowicz forms the narrative around the mythical hero. The main character Maciek gains the entirety of mythical fulfillment due to being shaped by (1) space of the execution of the film narration’s subject (indicated by the opposition of home area and garden area), (2) space around him (indicated by sublimed functioning of touch), (3) inability to identify with his own community (indicated by rejecting the butchery tradition of his family), (4) inability to act different than how it was shown (indicated by numerous similarities to Jesus Christ).

Opis:
The article covers the years 1916 to 2006, i.e. from Karol Szymanowski’s Twelve Etudes Op. 33 (1916) to Krzysztof Baculewski’s Twelve Etudes (2006). During the period under examination piano etudes were written by many Polish composers. Those by Szymanowski, Witold Lutosławski, Andrzej Panufnik, Grażyna Bacewicz and Bolesław Woytowicz are considered to be most representative. In the twentieth century and at the beginning of the twenty first century, the etude has not been an anachronic genre, as evidenced by the constant flow of new works penned by composers. These include both works in which the organization of the musical material draws on tradition and those which explore the techniques of twentieth century-music. The neo-classical trend exerted a far-reaching influence on the character and stylistic features of Polish piano etudes of the first half of the twentieth century. Works by Lutosławski, Bacewicz, Woytowicz, Szeligowski, and to some extent by Panufnik can serve as examples. The etudes by Lutosławski and Bacewicz are beyond doubt of the most outstanding artistic merit. They are part of the concert repertoire and are among the most frequently performed Polish 20th-century etudes. The etudes of Norbert Mateusz Kuźnik, Andrzej Hundziak and Franciszek Woźniak employ the techniques typical of new music, such as a new type of notation, and therefore belong to the avantgarde and post-avantgarde group. Post-modernist Two Etudes by Paweł Szymański also belongs to this group. The work is a good example of ‘sur-conventionality’, a style that is characteristic of Szymański’s music. The etudes by Polish composers, particularly contemporary ones, are used all too rarely as instruction pieces in Polish music schools. They are also rarely included in recital programmes. The reasons should be looked for in the lack of adequate preparation of both the students and teachers, as well as in an insufficient knowledge and understanding of 20th-century music. All this results in a reluctance to explore this part of the Polish musical heritage.

Opis:
The cycle 24 Etudes in All Major and Minor Keys op. 44 by Józef Wieniawski (1837-1912) demonstrates the essential unity of the virtuoso and the composer in a dynamic process of transforming the genre. This played an important part in providing innovative solutions not only in relation to piano-playing, but also in its significant influence on the development of texture, diversification of the instrumental sound and the expansion of means of musical expression in nineteenth-century piano music. Wieniawski, following Transcendental etudes or Concert etudes by Liszt, whose pupil he was in Weimar, blurs the boundaries between improvisation and composition; he draws attention to the unique nature of interpretation, its singularity and the specificity of the moment in time when the work is performed. Continuing the tradition of the grand cyclic form as a special kind of universum, he implements the concept of diversity in unity. The 24 characteristic miniatures reveal contextual links, intra-musical relationships, and the quest for individual solutions. This problematic concerns issues such as symbolic references, which lead one to an extensive catalogue of expressive qualities.

Recenzja książki Krzysztofa Bilicy Etiudy Chopina w Jego „jednym sposobie” z perspektywy dźwięków węzłowych i figur migotliwych, Kraków 2022.
Book Review of: Etiudy Chopina w Jego „jednym sposobie” z perspektywy dźwięków węzłowych i figur migotliwych [Chopin's Etudes in His 'Only One Manner' from the perspective of nodal sounds and twinkling figures] by Krzysztof Bilica, Kraków 2022. Krzysztof Bilica's monograph under review, despite being a professional reading, addressed to musicologists, composers, performers, may also be of interest to non-musicians. This is because attention is attracted by the title itself, promising an unobvious approach to a musicological issue. The writing style is also engaging - essayistic, colorful, using metaphors, with a certain dose of humor, simple in its message, despite many erudite digressions. Maintained in scientific rigor, this musical-literary digressive essay is an innovative publication both in its subjective and objective narrative, unusual for musicological dissertations, in its revealing content and multimedia form.

Opis:
In the article, the author presents the nation as an ethnic, cultural as well as political group. Also, the author’s experience of workshops for adolescents conducted at the University of Gdansk is described. The starting point for the meetings was the etude The Birth of a Nation (Pol. Narodziny narodu) by Kamil Polak, a minimalistic animation about the rise and the fall of a certain nation. The proposed model of the etude starts with a universal story based on the impersonal metaphor of the circle and it continues to the students’ “here and now”, revealing the axiological dilemmas of the young recipients of culture. Not only the views of students regarding the issue of nationality are presented in the article, but also it reveals how this knowledge is constructed.

Opis:
Łódź is often called “the capital of Polish film”. The cultural history of this town from the end of World War Two to the present day is closely connected with the movie industry. Marek Hendrykowski’s study on Łódź as a cinematic city offers the first comprehensive critical guide to the many films, interviews, published writings and individual memoirs of the Film School’s students and professors. This panoramic view presents the process of the historical transformation of cinematic images from Łódź between 1945 and 2013, as well as the profound influence this town had on many filmmakers. It serves as a reference work that will allow readers to navigate the subject’s wide range of examples: from Antoni Bohdziewicz, Jerzy Bossak, Kazimierz Kutz and Andrzej Wajda to Krzysztof Kieślowski, Wojciech Wiszniewski, Janusz Kijowski and Polish filmmakers of new generation.

Hamleś is a brilliant etude made in 1960 by young film-maker Jerzy Skolimowski during his studies in famous Film School in Łódź. In ballad form this mysterious and dark story tells about lost hopes of freedom and strange situation of Polish intelligentsia of the late 1950s in connection with characters of Shakespeare’s tragedy. Skolimowski’s parody has typical for this artistic obsessive-compulsive dimension (Don Fredericksen’s term). Skolimowski took the title and protagonists from the classic drama and transmitted the main subject in a way that is much darker and ironic than the original.

In 1957, the famous young Polish poet and song lyrics writer Agnieszka Osiecka (1936-1998) began studying in the Film School in Łódź. She studied film directing in 1957-1961. After graduating in film arts, she decided not to pursue a professional career in cinema. This analytical essay charts the history of the Film School in Łódź in the 1950s, the student works of Osiecka, and the inspiring confluence of audiovisual culture and film. The essay also explores in detail a wide spectrum of Polish film art of that period, providing original interpretations of eight études made by the young and talented artist during her film directing studies in Łódź.

Marek Hendrykowski’s essay presents the importance of Janusz Morgenstern’s early short film Radishes made after Stalin’s death, in 1954 as a student work produced by Film School in Łódź. The main character, old worker Gruliński loses his clear hopes and human illusions. The pesimistic conclusion is closed further by the simultaneous description of the hero’s social image within a discourse of origins and the sacred which evacuates analysis of class conflict and sociological approach in the narrative of an “ordinary good man” brutally disturbed in his desires and works by the irruption and power of an omnipotent destructive stalinist “red tape” bureaucracy. The poetics of Radishes is deeply influenced by the style of an Italian neorealism, first of all by its famous masterpiece, Vittorio De Sica’s Umberto D. (1952).

Director/writer/actor Roman Polanski is one of the central figures in the history of Film School in Łódź. This study provides a detailed and comprehensive introduction to examine cinematic and artistic values of his early short films made between 1955 and 1961 in Poland and in France before his professional feature length debut “Knife in the Water” (1962). In his essential work Marek Hendrykowski looks at these nine shorts with in-depth analysis and adopts both historical and theoretical approach, making use of poetics terms, close reading method and socio-cultural interpretation. In its treatment of Polanski’s études this unique study discusses why these films are important in so many aspects and attracitve from many points of view and they have come to symbolise and represent modern cinema in Poland of the 1950s and early 1960s.

The Dramaturgy of Roman Polański’s Two Men with a Wardrobe Marek Hendrykowski’s case study on Polański’s famous student etude Two Men with a Wardrobe reconstructs this wonderful short movie take-by-take: a must for anyone who cares about cinema as art. The young (24 years old) director, together with a team of talented colleagues (cameraman Maciej Kijowski, actors Jakub Goldberg and Henryk Kluba, director’s assistant Andrzej Kostenko and film music composer and jazzman Krzysztof Komeda), demonstrated a very modern way of thinking about the art of the moving image and about the various possibilities hidden in the simple poetics of screen drama. From its opening scene on the beach to the dramatic and nostalgic ending with a comeback to the sea, the film charts two men’s struggles on the difficult path to becoming independent human beings enjoying their own freedom.

Marek Hendrykowski presents in his study the earliest fiction and documentary films made by Andrzej Brzozowski (1932-2005), excellent Polish filmmaker, 1971-2005 professor of the famous Film School in Łódź (PWSFTviT). “Sunflowers” (1953), “Escape” (1954/55), “Legend” (1957), “Jazz Talks” (1957) – these short films, preserved in the collection of Film School Archive, are almost unknown for wider audience in Poland and abroad. In the second part of his study Hendrykowski gives also an accessible overview of the historical evolution of the filmmaker through the close examination of another two outstanding short films made by him: By the Railway Track (1963) and Medallions (1966). Last two were adaptations of short stories written in 1945 by Zofia Nałkowska, a masterpiece of antinazi world lterature. The article deals with the most important values and close-reading thematic and stylistic areas of Brzozowski’s early works: those developing in the 1950’s and early 1960’s but having deep impact in the poetics of academic short film in Poland, whose form and course they have fundamentally redirected.
