Population ageing is one of the most important problems of the 21st century economy. Similarly, the subject of creating a living space for the elderly, taking into consideration their specific needs resulting from functional disability in the context of the ever growing population of elderly people is one of the key challenges that modern architecture has to face. The aim of the article is to present the physical environment of geriatric care facilities as a system of functional and behavioural stimuli in the context of ergonomic as well as social solutions, which may have influence on the economic development – by stimulating the activity of the elderly, as well as on the development of a number of disciplines connected with old age. It has been assumed that there exists a number of spatial determinants which may become elements supporting the elderly as well as the people involved in providing care for them. Therefore it is necessary to improve the standard of technical equipment and to modernize the architectural space targeted at the elderly.

The author formulates the topic in a synthetical way, elaborating on it in three parts: Hebrew Bible, deuterocanonical books and message of the New Testament. The fake dilemma (gerontocracy or gerontophobia) is overcome in the light of Revelation: Bible presents the wisdom as a source of truth and goodness, and as a solidarity with the elderly, because only the truth can set people free (J 8, 23). The subject of creating a living space for the elderly, taking into consideration their specific needs result- ing from functional disability in the context of the ever growing population of elderly people is one of the key challenges that modern architecture has to face today. The article aims to present the physical environment of geriatric care facilities based on the example of homes for the elderly as a system of functional and behavioral stimuli in the context of ergonomic and sociological solutions. It has been assumed that there exists a number of spatial determinants which may become elements supporting the elderly in the specific living environment of a home for the elderly. Functional solutions are important to consider but so are the adaptive capabilities and needs of the elderly, who are at the stage of their life when the stability of living environment and personal safety are crucial. Therefore improving the standard of technical equipment and modernizing the living space will not automatically lead to the improvement of quality of life of old people. It is also necessary for the designers to be aware that they need to consider the spatial competence of the target users, the importance of human capital senior citizens represent in our society and the standardization of cultural norms contained in the living practice of the elderly. The above constitute the factors which make it possible to organize the use of living space properly.

Przedmiotem analizy niniejszego opracowania uczyniono zachowania konsumpcyjne osób starszych. Autor szuka odpowiedzi na pytania: Jaka jest specyfika zachowań seniorów na rynku dóbr i usług? Jakie czynniki determinują zachowania konsumpcyjne seniorów? Jakie typy zachowań nabywczych są najczęściej spotykane wśród emerytów i rencistów? Szukając odpowiedzi na te pytania, wskazano, że wiek jest ważną determinantą różnicującą konsumpcję. Skupiono się na analizie wybranych klasyfikacji konsumentów seniorów, wskazując na trudność w budowie typologii tej kategorii nabywców. Poddano analizie wybrane cechy konsumentów seniorów. W celu przedstawienia specyfiki tej kategorii konsumentów przedstawiono wyniki badań własnych nad zachowaniami konsumpcyjnymi seniorów na rynku dóbr i usług. Zidentyfikowano najważniejsze czynniki ekonomiczne, społeczne i indywidualne determinujące zachowanie konsumpcyjne osób starszych.
In the paper entitled: “Strategy of consumer behavior of the elderly on the market of consumer foods and services” the subject matter for analysis was deemed to be the consumer behavior of the elderly. The author is searching for the answer to the following questions: What are the specifics of the behavior of the elderly on the market of foods and services? What are the factors determining the consumer behavior of the elderly? What types of purchasing behavior are most frequently encountered among retirees? In searching for the answers to these questions, it was indicated that age is an important determinant in the variation of consumption. There is a focus on the analysis of the selected classification of elderly consumers indicating the difficulty in building the typology of this category of purchasers. Analysis was also carried out on the selected features of elderly consumers. With the aim of presenting the specifics of the category of elderly consumers, the results of personal research on the consumer behavior of elderly consumers on the market of goods and services were indicated. The most significant economic, social and individual factors determining the consumer behavior of elderly people have been identified.

The purpose of the article is to find the answer to the questions whether television commercials have an impact on creating the image of the elderly and what image of old age and lifestyle of the elderly is built on the basis of television ads. Studies have confirmed the hypothesis and have shown that the media through the content presented in TV commercials have a real impact on the shape of the image of the elderly population. The results allow the media to be seen as strong and efficient tools in the process of creating the image as such, also of other populations or individuals. The qualitative results have shown that the image of old age is seen mainly as positive and neutral, whereas their lifestyle is perceived as real, idealized and attractive.

Social support concerns aiding people at various stages of their life. It is a key concept with respect to social work, pedagogy, social psychology, education and health care. Social assistance supports people and their families in their efforts to satisfy the above needs and enables them to live with dignity. In Poland, social assistance is implemented in situations that require such support, such as having own homes, providing health and well-being including food, clothing and medical care. Social work can be carried out in the area of social services, implementation of programs at the national level in collaboration with various institutions. Bezdzietne osoby starsze znajdują się w trudnej sytuacji, gdy potrzebują wsparcia. W Polsce opiekę seniorom zapewniają bowiem głównie dorosłe dzieci. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie wyników analiz otrzymywania wsparcia przez bezdzietne osoby starsze, ich doświadczeń w tym zakresie, a także opinii na temat możliwości skorzystania z różnych form opieki formalnej i nieformalnej. W tym celu wykorzystano dane pochodzące z badania jakościowego przeprowadzonego wśród takich osób w Polsce. Wyniki analiz pokazują, że w sytuacji chwilowego pogorszenia się stanu zdrowia seniorzy bez potomstwa mogą liczyć na osoby z ich sieci społecznych (sąsiadów, przyjaciół, dalszych krewnych). Natomiast w razie poważnej choroby czy niesamodzielności wsparcie instytucjonalne wydaje się jedynym – chociaż wcale nie pożądanym – rozwiązaniem dla tych osób.
When there is the need for support, the childless elderly find themselves in a difficult position. In Poland, care for the elderly is mostly provided by adult offspring. The article’s aim is to provide the results of analysis into the support received by childless older people, their experience in this field, as well as opinions on how to benefit from different forms of formal and informal care. Data from a qualitative survey carried out among such persons in Poland were used for this purpose. The results of the analyses show that in the event of temporary health deterioration, seniors without children can count on members of their social networks (neighbours, friends, distant relatives). On the other hand, in the case of serious illness or any lack of self-reliance, institutional support appears to be the only – although not desirable – solution for such people.

Increasing labor force participation of the elderly is one of the main goals of labor market policy in Poland. Prezentowany artykuł podejmuje tematykę sumienia osoby starszej, sprawcy przemocy. Uwaga skupiona jest na aspektach etycznych i społeczno-prawnych. Podstawę źródłową stanowią poglądy etyków, socjologów prawa oraz filozofów. Teoretyczne ujęcie sumienia sprawcy przemocy podparte jest odwołaniami do badań dotyczących przemocy, zrealizowanych w trzech domach pomocy społecznej województwa podlaskiego oraz badań prowadzonych w ramach projektów międzynarodowych, których celem była diagnoza oraz poprawa działań interwencyjnych w przypadkach przemocy względem starszych kobiet ze strony męża. 
The presented paper will address the issue of the conscience of an elderly perpetrator of violence, focusing its ethical, social and legal aspects. It is based on the opinions of experts in ethics, legal sociology, and philosophy. The theoretical perspective is supported with references to research on violence, conducted in three social care homes in Podlasie, as well as research conducted as part of international projects, which had the aim of diagnosing and improving intervention measures used in cases of marital violence against elderly women.

The process of aging in most societies in Europe is observed. Individual states face the challenges of providing care to increasing number of elderly people. Traditionally, the most important care-giver is family. In many countries, including Poland, an increase of female migrants is observed, what is one of the factor influencing the decline of care-capital in families. The article discusses the problem of changes of care-giving systems in aging Europe in the context of migration processes. The authors ask questions concerning the range and form of the participation of migrants who live in transnational social space in caring for elderly members of their families.
W Europie obserwuje się proces starzenia się większości społeczeństw. Państwa stoją przed trudnym wyzwaniem zapewnienia opieki coraz większej populacji ludzi starych. Tradycyjnie najważniejszym dawcą opieki jest rodzina. W wielu krajach, w tym w Polsce, obserwuje się wzrost liczby emigrujących kobiet, co jest jednym z czynników wpływających  na zmniejszenie kapitału opiekuńczego rodzin. Artykuł podejmuje problem zmian kierunku świadczeń opiekuńczych w starzejącej się Europie w kontekście procesów migracyjnych. Stawia pytania o zakres i formę udziału migrantów funkcjonujących w transnarodowej przestrzeni społecznej w opiece nad starymi członkami rodzin.

The paper introduces the academic work performed at the Cultural Animation Unit of the University of Zielona Gora. It focuses on running discussions within the academic seminar. The main part of the article is the example of the problem discussed on the seminar, although infrequently undertaken in the gerontological literature. The problem concerns the violence of the elderly against their immediate environment. Listed examples of the behaviour of elderly people, described in the literature or observed in every day life, let us consider the behaviour of this social category only as genial or hostile. What is more, the examples show the variability of its behaviour in the context of transformation of social roles possible to perform in this age.
W tekście tym we wprowadzeniu przedstawiona jest praca naukowa Zakładu Animacji Kulturalnej Uniwersytetu Zielonogórskiego, której jednym z trzech rodzajów jest prowadzenie dyskusji w ramach seminarium naukowego. Zasadnicza część artykułu jest przykładem dyskutowanego na tym seminarium problemu, rzadko podejmowanego w literaturze gerontologicznej, jakim jest przemoc ludzi starych wobec najbliższego otoczenia. Wymienione przykłady zachowań ludzi starych opisane w literaturze lub zaobserwowane w życiu codziennym, pozwalają dopełnić znane na ogół dychotomiczne podziały postępowania przedstawicieli tej kategorii społecznej jako wyłącznie dobroduszne lub wrogie, a także zwrócić uwagę na zmienność jej zachowań, w kontekście przemiany społecznych ról, możliwych do pełnienia w tym wieku.

The main aim of the paper was to analyse the subjective well-being of the elderly in Poland, as well as its determinants by use of the logistic regression. The data used come from the 2011 wave of the survey “Social Diagnosis – living conditions and quality of life of Poles”. The analyses have shown that men aged 60 years or more had higher subjective well-being than their female counterparts. Subjective life satisfaction of the elderly in Poland decreases with age for women, but for males on the opposite. The elderly in Poland were satisfied the most with the aspects related to their personal life such as children, marriage, relationship with family member and relatives, while they were the least satisfied with situation in the country, life prospects, health status, sexual life, and economical situation of their families. Educational level and health status (measured in terms of disability) had the greatest impact on the sense of happiness. Generally people with the highest level of education had more chances to be happy than those less educated. The probability of happiness among people without disability was higher than among disabled ones. Married people also had bigger odds to be happy.

The article presents identify the problem of an aging population, indicates the causes and effects of aging. In Poland and all over the world there is systematicmatic increase in the total population of the elderly who are at least 60 years of age. The increase in the number of older people in society due to two phenomena: the growth in life expectancy and declining birth of children. The result is a faster increase in the number of elderly people than the growth of the newly born.

In the paper the issue of dreams elder people have is discussed. First, definitions of dreams are explained, as day-dreaming and night dreams. The author discusses night dreams, its role in human life, and meaning in culture, especially in Christian religion, mainly the Bible. Then she points to therapeutic role of night dreams discussing in care centers for the elderly. And day-dreaming is important for emotional sphere of human life. Finally the author analyses 31 in-depth interviews conducted by her students with elder people. What where their dreams in the past, when they were children, how dreams changed in their youth, adulthood and what are their dreams now. In the end the author points to the Golden Dream Foundation which helps people to fulfill their dreams and concludes how important it is for the elderly to have a possibility to fulfill their dreams and advance their life quality.

Wśród słuchaczy-seniorów Uniwersytetu III Wieku funkcjonującego przy Uniwersytecie Rzeszowski przeprowadzono ankietę dotyczącą znajomości blogosfery. Wyniki i konkluzje przedstawiono w artykule.
Possibility of communicating via the Internet is clear and accessible. Information sent by the web can reach recipients with no time or location limits. Media space, developing so dynamically, is providing more and more new possibilities for the elderly. To maintain positive self-image, a person who is getting old should undertake new kinds of activities and replace the lost or fading social roles with others. At present, blogs are one of the popular forms of communication. They can be a fascinating activity for the elderly. Many of them set up their blogs currently. A survey was conducted by the author on blogosphere among the 3rd Age University students at Rzeszow University. In the article, results and conclusions are discussed.
