Opis:
W jej wyniku dokonano dalszych spostrzeżeń pozwalających na hipotetyczne włączenie niektórych z badanych grodzisk do korpusu obiektów mogących mieć związek z realizacją potrzeb kultowo-obrzędowych.

Opis:
The turmoil of the 1030s in the Polish territory has so far attracted attention of historians. A detailed analysis of the information available in the written sources has strengthened a position in the result of which (in line with the reference to the events in question) the pagan backlash was to stem primarily from religious reasons. This interpretations suggests and provokes reception of Mieszko II’s domain as a completely Christian organisation. Consequently, at least officially it suggests that the pagan communities had been pushed to the margins of the society. Scholars have no doubts that these communities existed because they are regarded to have affected the events of the 1030s. Was it really the case? An analysis of archaeological sources, previously not used in the discussion of the pagan backlash, does not answer the questions so unambiguously. There is a strong indication that the followers of the old values did not have to flee from persecutions or the missionary ideology. It also looks like they did not have to fear financial exploitation for the benefit of the established church structures which could have easily operated parallel to venues referring to the traditional religious symbols. If we assume that it was the case, were the events of the 1030s in fact a pagan backlash? This question was at the basis of the considerations presented in this text.

The article examines an early medieval object interpreted as an amulet: a shoe of the Scandinavian god, Vidar, discovered during archaeological excavations at the Old Town in Wolin. A hypothesis about its relationship with the Norse mythic concepts is subjected to scrutiny. Some features of the artefact may indicate its special role in the social life or beliefs of the population inhabiting the south Baltic coast.

Abstract: In the second half of the 20th century during archaeological excavations in the area of the Old Town in Wolin were discovered remains of two features which stood out against the background of wooden structures characteristic of this centre in the early Middle Ages, dated to the second half of the 9th century and the 10th-11th century which were interpreted as pagan temples. As a result of later reinterpretation of sources the hypothesis of functioning in Wolin pagan cult focused around the two temples was negated. According to the author of this text the analysis of available source base does not seem to give rise to such an unequivocal interpretation and rejection of earlier findings.

Opis:
The 1050 anniversary of the baptism of Poland provided a good reason to resume the current discussion on the causes and circumstances of the conversion of Mieszko I and his nascent state. The scarcity and ambiguity of available sources has meant that we are far from definitive conclusions in this regard. It would seem that we can have a better understanding regarding the conversion of Pomerania. Two missions connected sequentially with the eastern and western part of that area have had a direct echo in the literature of the early Middle Ages. And while the activity of Otto of Bamberg in Western Pomerania brought visible results (although it seems to have no such consequences as suggested by the sources) it is difficult to find evidence for the 10th century from the eastern part of the region. Recent archaeological discoveries related to the stronghold located between the Vistula and the Motława rivers, undermine not only the possibility of missionary work in this place, but also the presence of St. Adalbert in general. Furthermore, the archaeological sources we have at our disposal suggests that the inhabitants of the Gdansk were not interested in the reception of Christian ideology – even if these were associated with early medieval elites (and the presence of their representatives here is indicated by some discoveries). It seems to be confirmed by a corpus of sources which can indicate that the functioning of the local community was based on a traditional normative system. In other words, common archaeological discoveries do not give any direct evidences concerning the stronghold’s conversion, or even to place a Christian community here. In such circumstances, we must assume, that either the Vita of St Adalbert does not reflect the reality of their time and should be treated as a ‘classic’ example of hagiographic rhetoric, or concerns a different stronghold located at the mouth of the Vistula river.

Opis:
This article seeks to reassess the notion of double graves in early medieval Poland. Burials of this kind are rarely found at inhumation cemeteries and their total number usually does not exceed 1% of all graves from a particular site. The paper begins by presenting a brief overview of various textual sources, mostly Arabic, which describe funerary rituals of the pagan Slavs. Some of these accounts mention a peculiar practice during which the wives of the deceased committed suicide at the graveside in order to be buried or cremated with their husbands. While it is difficult to assess the authenticity of such descriptions, a number of previous scholars have suggested that double graves of men and women may represent burials of married couples. The authors of the present article seek to expand these interpretations and argue for the necessity to acknowledge the multivalence and diversity of double graves in early medieval Poland. To demonstrate their arguments the different sections of the article focus on several variants of double graves that have been observed within the examined corpus of evidence. The cases discussed in detail include: 1. alleged burials of married couples (where the man and woman lay very close to one another, sometimes holding hands), 2. potential human sacrifices (where one of the individuals seems to have suffered a violent death, as evidenced by traces of wounds, usually to the skull, inflicted with the use of a sharp instrument), 3. double and mass graves perhaps resulting from dramatic events (plagues, war etc.), 4. cases of reopened graves (where the second individual is added to a pre-existing single grave), 5. graves of two men (interpreted as burials of relatives, companions or perhaps homosexuals), and 6. double graves of adults and children. Having reassessed a large body of data the authors argue that the previously proposed interpretations, which perceived practically every double grave of a man and woman as belonging to a married couple, should be seriously reconsidered. The diversity of double graves in early medieval Poland allows for a supposition that they may have resulted from various circumstances – not necessarily as peaceful and innocent as postulated in the works of previous scholars. However, in the context of textual sources, it is quite possible that some funerals may have also been understood as “posthumous weddings”. The ritual murder of one of the individuals could have been intended to wed him or her to the deceased, thereby ensuring they are remembered by their contemporaries not as spinsters or bachelors, but as fully accomplished members of the society.

Opis:
The problem of the meaning of miniature zoo- and anthropomorphic artefacts regardless of the finds’ chronology is the subject of very lively discussion in literature. It is no different in the case of small figural sculptures from early medieval Pomerania. Characteristics of specific groups of such representations and individual artefacts appear in the literature sporadically and usually in the context of broader research problems. Usually they are associated with customs related generally to religious beliefs or everyday life, the practical sphere of everyday life, where they are treated primarily as toys. There still lacks a broader approach to the problem using the findings of religious and anthropological studies as well as the use of ethnographic analogies. The aim of this text is to undertake such a broader analysis. Three groups of artefacts underwent a detailed analysis: so-called miniature idols, representations of horses and representations of boats. These artefacts, because of their nature, could have fulfilled several functions at the same time. An important role was probably also played by raw material from which these items were made, which allowed a transformation or destruction of given representations. Although a utilitarian function for these objects cannot be completely negated, as in the case of boats, which, in some cases, could have been used as toys, in our opinion they should be associated with a wider sphere of symbolic and religious life, where each element is perceived in mythical terms.

Abstract: The article concerns a boat burial containing the skeleton of a man and furnished with an iron axe head and three bone skates, discovered in 1889 in Szczecin and then completely forgotten. Based on the analysis of the archives and the examination of the axe head, the authors date the find to the 11th century and consider it a burial of a representative of an elite originating from Pomerania or the Baltic Slavic area.
