    Various factors influence the contemporary reception of Polish literature in France. Economic criteria have succeeded ideological constraints, but new developments in the memory process in Poland and France also play a major role, all the more so as they are not synchronised, especially when it comes to the history of WW2 and Jewish -Polish relations. An analysis reveals the combination of at least four factors: the role of literary translations (re-editions and new translations), the results of his- toriographical research, the evolution of collective memory in both countries, as well as the interaction with foreign – mostly Anglo-Saxon – publications on the sub- ject. Through a cursory presentation of the reception of Polish literature for youth and adults in the early 2000s, we intend to show that WW2 and Jewish-Polish rela- tions, among other themes, occupy a central position. The two “re-enactments” of the figure of Jan Karski published in 2009 in French novels by Yannick Haenel and Bruno Tessarech and the ensuing polemic, as well as the re-edition of the testimony by the great Polish freedom fighter Jan Karski are a telling illustration of what is at stake in the contemporary reception of Polish literature in France and, more generally, of all the issues regarding that country.

    The Author is interested in the states of becoming silent, discontinuing one’s utterance, which are associated with certain mechanisms of the functioning of the brain, as well as in the observation of such states in different artistic disciplines. Looking for an answer to the question how aposiopesis operates in words, sounds, and images, she analyzes pieces of music, poems (Zbigniew Herbert’s Pora), and examples of visual arts (Wojciech Pakmur’s paintings of the tango). In her reconstruction of the research field, the Author refers to rhetoric ( Jerzy Ziomek, Seweryna Wysłouch), the philosophy of language (Michel Foucault, Jean-François Lyotard), and neurophenomenology. The aim of the article is to suggest a new mode of reading that seeks inspiration and language in works from the field of neuropsychology (Maria Pąchalska), hermeneutic phenomenology (Mark Johnson), or neurology (António Damásio, Oliver Sacks). The Author’s analyses refer to Raoul Schrott and Arthur Jacobs’s concept (Gehirn und Gedicht, 2011), and the conclusions confirm that one should not look for a model (pattern) in the reception of art, but describe mental processes. The proposed mechanism of interpretation is most accurately reflected by the metaphor of dance improvisation, where one does not meditate on and then perform particular steps and gestures, but “thinks in motion.” This mode of reading emphasizes the spatial dimension of thought processes and their dynamic nature.

    The paper results from considerations on art reception and reflection on the current position of art recipients, their dispositions, and behaviours towards modern artistic activity, including the emotional, cognitive and behavioural orientation of early school education teachers in modern art. It begins with reflections on modern art understood as artistic activity created based on various means of expression and avant-garde and neo-avant-garde artistic solutions, which reacts to the huge potential, possibilities, threats of the surrounding world, and the situation of the recipient of modern artistic activity. The study’s further part presents the basic findings on the theoretical and conceptual framework of the phenomenon and a model of empirical cognition of early school education teachers’attitudes towards modern art. The study is addressed to researchers of the subject area and pedagogues. Even though it can hardly be regarded as a handy compendium, it provides a theoretical base and a research perspective. Therefore, it can serve as a guideline for future research explorations.

Lewicki dokonuje analizy danych zawartych w różnych źródłach, sprawdza, jaka była faktyczna liczba polskich filmów wysyłanych na eksport w różnych okresach, śledzi, które dzieła były pokazywane w największej liczbie krajów oraz ilu widzów udało im się tam zgromadzić. Prezentacja oraz interpretacja danych staje się dla autora punktem wyjścia rozważań dotyczących funkcjonowania światowego obiegu filmów i roli, jaką odgrywała w nim kinematografia polska.
    The text is an attempt to look at the Polish cinema from the perspective of its reception outside the borders of our country. Lewicki analyses the data contained in various sources, checks, what was the actual number of Polish films exported at different times, keeps track of which works have been exhibited in the largest number of countries, and how many viewers they attracted. The presentation and interpretation of data becomes the starting point for the author’s reflections on the functioning of the global circulation of films and the role played by the Polish cinematography.

Krystalizuje ją dzięki dostrzeganiu w dziele swojego imago. Przez zjawisko Aha-Erlebnis potrafi zidentyfi kować się z dziełem, które staje się swoistym lustrem ego adresata. Problematyka, którą podejmuje autor, będzie egzemplifi kowana na przykładzie „Lalek” Hansa Bellmera, które poprzez swoją formę wpisują się w myśl abjectu Julii Kristevy.
    The text presents a proposal to understanding work of art as being expressed in abjection. With works of art, the recipients can create their own identity. It is crystallizes by the recipient’s contact with their imago. By Aha-Erlebnis phenomenon they can identify with the work, which becomes a kind of recipient’s Ego mirror. Issues will be discussed on the example of Hans Bellmer’s Dolls, which by their form and presentation are part of the abject problem described by Julia Kristeva.

    A book review of a volume Polskie piśmiennictwo filmowe [The Polish Film Writing] (2013), edited by Piotr Zwierzchowski and Barbara Giza provokes the reviewer to make some general comments on the unfulfilled duties of contemporary film studies, which should pay more attention to what was written on film in the past, especially on film reception. At the same time an overview of the volume is presented, and the book appears to deal well with this shortcoming of the discipline.

    Cyprian Norwid's literary biography, his literary and artistic endeavour show a boundary situation in the humanities and challenge the existing technique of study and methods of interpretation. This boundary situation was composed by the following elements: a) Norwid's peripheral in his own epoch that resulted in a lack of acceptance and communication, b) poverty and the struggle for survival, c) few publications during his lifetime, dispersal and loss of a part of his manuscripts, d) isolation during his sojourn abroad in France, Italy, and the United States, e) his hermetic language and thought, f) universalistic aesthetic and philosophical attitude that was in conflict with the positivistic and utilitaritarian tendencies of the epoch, g) an unusually broad and heterogenic group of sourcews, h) discontinuity and multifarious reception, i) combination of innovation and traditionalism The author confronts the writer's boundary situation with the current research standards and methodologies. In part I, he considers the influence of the historical, hermeneutic, and cognitive distance on the modes of research interpretation and presentation of Norwid; he discusses the methods and effects of taming and consuming his historical novelty, and puts together the real and historical presence in the writer's epoch with postmortem symbolical presence Part II analyses methods of the reconstruction of the “true Norwid” and stresses the impact of the writer's image, promoted as “true,” on the time, circumstances, and manner of the reconstruction itself. This part claims that if we make one of many Norwid's images “always and everywhere true,” then we have aspirations to cognitive exclusiveness, make it uniform and appropriate the poet's image. As a result, his interpretation is made rigid Part III discusses the tension between the poet's universalism – e.g. his declaration of eternal and universally valid truths – the historical genesis and the shape of this kind of messages typical of the epoch. The ahistorical relationship to the poet's declarations gives rise to a phenomenon that is called interpretation of “Norwid by way of Norwid” in Norwidology, a fact that should be deemed vicious circle from the methodological point of view Part IV Mythologies and Methodologies evaluates the usefulness of contemporary standard research methods in solving difficulties that compose the knowledge of Norwid. This part indicates the incommensurable character of cognitive and methodological presuppositions, which Norwid himself used in his interpretation and description of the world together with the presuppositions that are used in contemporary theories of knowledge and methodologies The final conclusion of the paper reads that the difficulties in studying Norwid make us aware that the author of Silence is not for the contemporary methodologies merely a passive “object” with which, as the “hermeneutics of violence” declares, one can make everything whatever one wills, but it is a challenge for them that unveils both their strong and weak points. He is therefore their critical partner, and at times also a constructive alternative

    Peregrynacja do Ziemi Świętej autorstwa Mikołaja „Sierotki” Radziwiłła została po raz pierwszy opublikowana w 1601 r., a na przestrzeni kolejnych 200 lat ukazało się 14 jej wznowień w różnych językach. Relacja z pielgrzymki do Jerozolimy jest nie tylko dowodem wszechstronnego wykształcenia i oczytania Radziwiłła, ale też prezentuje autora jako zdolnego szesnastowiecznego dokumentalistę, który doskonale wie, w jaki sposób przyciągnąć uwagę odbiorcy. Peregrynacja zyskała ogromną popularność, czego dowodzą liczne ślady lektury (noty rękopiśmienne, podkreślenia) pozostawione przez czytelników w zachowanych egzemplarzach. Celem artykułu jest określenie recepcji czytelniczej wspomnianego dzieła na podstawie wyników badań proweniencyjnych przeprowadzonych na 20 egzemplarzach Peregrynacji przechowywanych w Gabinecie Starych Druków Biblioteki Uniwersyteckiej w Warszawie.
    Peregrynacja do Ziemi Świętej [Peregrination to the Holy Land] by Mikołaj Krzysztof ‘The Orphan’ Radziwiłł was first published in 1601 and within next two hundred years there were fourteen other re-releases of the publication in different languages. The account of the pilgrimage to Jerusalem not only proves Radziwiłł’s comprehensive education and being well read but also presents him as a skilled sixteenth-century documentalist who knows precisely how to attract reader’s attention. The fact that the readers have left a number of underlines, notes, and comments in the preserved copies proves Peregrynacja do Ziemi Świętej to have been a great literary success of those times. This article aims at determining readers’ response to Radziwiłł’s work on the grounds of the results of the provenance research conducted on twenty copies of Peregrynacja do Ziemi Świętej deposited in the Early Printed Books Department of University of Warsaw Library.
