Lolium perenne
Opis:
This article reviews the selected problems concerning the taxonomy, karyology, origin, and distribution of the genus Lolium, and especially of L. perenne. The genus consists of eight diploid (2n = 14) species. Four are cross-pollinated (e.g. L. perenne, L. multiflorum), and four are self-pollinated (e.g. L. temulentum, L. remotum). From the taxonomical point of view the first group is often classified as the section Lolium and the second as the section Craepalia. They all originate from the Mediterranean region, most of them are widely distributed in Eurasia and introduced in Africa, Americas, and Australia. In Poland occur: L. perenne, L. multiflorum, L. temulentum, L. rigidum as well as L. remotum and L. subulatum, which occurrence seems to be doubtful. L. perenne is morphologically differentiated and sometimes it is divided (on the basis of inflorescence characters) into several infraspecific taxa, usually varieties. It cross easily with L. multiforum, L. rigidum, other species of the genus and even with some representatives of Festuca. This interfertility suggests that there is no barrier to free gene-exchange between them. The species originate probably from the Mediterranean region, however its natural geographical distribution is rather obscure (at present it is impossible to distinguish its natural and synanthropic localities). In Poland it occurs in the whole territory of the country. L. perenne belongs to the apophytes for which we did not succeed in showing the community of origin. Presently, it grows in ruderal, segetal and seminatural communities of the class Molinio-Arrhenatheretea. Undoubtedly, L. perenne together with other species of the genus constitute an important group of grasses of great interest to botanists as well as to plant breeders and agriculturists. For this reason further fundamental and complementary studies should be carried out.

Evolution of parasite - host systems should be treated as a specific kind of co-evolution. Although its course is in accordance with the general rules of organic world evolution, it has some peculiarities. One of them is retardation or acceleration of endoparasites' phylogenesis, as compared with the hosts' one. The second one is different speed of phylogenetic changes of endoparasites belonging to the same systematic group. These changes can be significantly limited, as well. Phylogenetic changes of euglenids - intestine parasites of Copepoda - are considerably limited, even in comparison with the scale of changes of such species which begin their parasitic life by infecting Copepoda eggs.

Opis:
The penis bone (also called as baculum or os penis) is a heterotopic bone occurring in such orders like: carnivores, bats, insectivores, rodents and some primates. Baculum is extremely morphologically diverse both in shape and size, even between closely related species. Hence it has been widely used as a systematic tool. Consequently, os penis serves different functions across the species: e.g. stimulation of reproductive track, mechanical support, protection of the urethra from compression. Some analysis suggest also, that hooked tip of the penis bone can be used to damage and remove sperm which comes from the previous male. It can be also used as an indicator of genetic quality in males because it continues growth throughout life. Numerous researches into baculum provide some information about animal evolution, sexual selection and reproductive strategies in the different groups of animal. However, our knowledge about evolution, significance and environmental influence on the os penis seems to be incomplete and needs to be further studied.

Traditional classification of the nematodes, based on morphological-ecological characters was evaluated in the context of molecular analysis of systematic taxons, with special regards to ascarids. Division of superfamily Ascaridoidea into 4 families (Heterocheilidae, Ascarididae, Anisakidae, Raphidascarididae) proposed by Fagerhholm (1991) seems to be proved by the molecular data of Nadler (1992, 1995) and Nadler & Hudspeth (1998).

Opis:
The use of molecular phylogenetics to examine the interrelationships between animal parasites, free-living nematodes, and plant parasites versus traditional classification based on morphological-ecological c haracters was discussed and reviewed. Distinct differences were observed between parasitic nematodes and free·living ones. Within the former group, animal parasites turned out to be distinctly different from plant parasites. Using small subunit of ribosomal RNA gene sequence from a wide range of nematodes, there is a possibility to compare animal-parasitic, plant-parasitic and free-living taxa. Nowadays the parasitic nematodes expressed sequence tag (EST) project is currently generating sequence information to provide a new source of data to examine the evolutionary history of this taxonomlc group.

In the present review, an attempt to define the animal kingdom against a background of other kingdoms in the domain of eukaryotic organisms is presented,showing the common features linking the animal kingdom with the kingdom of fungi.The animals were clearly separated from other kingdoms through two unique systemscharacteristic of them: nervous and muscular. The matter is complicated by the fact that in the four types of the animal kingdom (Porifera, Placozoa) the nervous and muscular systems are absent. Therefore, zoologists proposed the name Metazoa multicellularanimal – for the animal kingdom. The main problematic issues of monophyly based onselected phylogenetic groups and phyla are discussed. In addition to the phylogenetictree (based on monophyly) the punctuated equilibrium was established for four independentgroups: Porifera, Cnidaria, Protostomia, Deuterostomia. Finally, the position ofthe animal kingdom in the monophyletic point of view and against a background of all other organisms is presented.

Opis:
Adaptation of life to the environment occurs at two levels - that of an individual and that of a population. In the first step of the process of adaptation variability is produced. It provides necessary material for the second step - selection. Variability is generated during the phylogeny, from one generation to the next. However, variability can also be generated during individual ontogeny at least by protective mechanisms of instinctive behaviors of animals and conscious cultural human actions. Variability originates from point mutations and chromosomal aberrations occurring during transmission of genetic material from generation to generation and through activation, or deactivation, of genes that alters their expression. This variability determines phenotypic differences among individuals. Variability thus produced is subjected to selection because how a phenotype is formed determines its ability to survive and to produce offspring. In human populations, adaptation occurs via biological and via cultural processes. Humans with their culture - especially medicine and social care - protect lives of individuals who otherwise would have been eliminated by natural selection.Hereditary differences among various geographic groups of modern people occur with low frequency - just a fraction of a percentage point. From observations of phenotypes it can be concluded that both structural alterations in the DNA and differences in gene expression cause variations, the majority of genes are inactive at various stages of ontogeny, while various portions of the genotype become active at different times in the life of an individual.Environment influences variation in three ways: (1) by causing mutations or by altering gene expression and (2) by providing conditions for the formation of a phenotype coded by a particular genotype and (3) as a factor of selection, including occurrence of cultural behaviors modifying effects of natural selection. It seems that the main aim of future research in human ecology should be search for the answer to following questions: 1. Can gene expression be changed during ontogeny? 2. To what extent such changes can be inherited? 3. To what extent is there an increase in the occurrence of genes that do not allow survival without special care (genetic load), and 4. How will all this influence future of our species?
