    Opis:
    The aim of this paper is to show how the dimensions of imagery, one of the most important human cognitive abilities, can be expressed, that is to consider the impact this ability can have on the process of text production and its understanding in translation. It is presented on the example of the novella by Thomas Mann A Man and His Dog and its translation into Polish by Leopold Staff how the cognitve translation theory based on the cognitive grammar of Langacker (1987, 1991) can be applied to translation analysis. First, the terms conceptualization and imagery are introduced and explained from the cognitive perspective and the dimensions of imagery: selection, abstraction and perspective are desribed. Based on this, the results of the analysis of examples selected from the novella by Thomas Mann and its Polish translation are presented.

    In the first part of the article, Giuseppe Veronese’s concept of arithmetical constructivism is reconstructed from his dispersed remarks. It is pointed out that although for Veronese time is a necessary condition for the construction of natural numbers by an individual subject and the subject cognizes time in an a priori way, it is not a (proto-)intuition of the subject. This is a fundamental difference between the concept proposed by Veronese and the constructivism of Kant and Brouwer. Veronese’s justification of the subject’s ability to cognize infinity, represented in his text by infinite sequences, is analyzed in the second part of the paper. The only condition for the cognition of the infinite sequence is to have a rule according to which its successive terms “follow one another.” The price of the ability to cognize the infinitive “whole” (sequence) may be the uncognizability of certain “parts” (terms of sequence). Infinite sequences, cognizable according to Veronese, are allowed as objects of mathematical research, although they do not meet the condition of constructability.

    Funkcjonujący w Polsce obraz wojny wietnamskiej ukształtowany został głównie przez amerykańskie kino wojenne. Przedstawia ono tylko amerykański obraz konfliktu. Armia Republiki Wietnamu, będąca wszak „gospodarzem” wojsk Stanów Zjednoczonych, pojawia się na planie drugim bądź trzecim. Tymczasem drugi co do wielkości zagraniczny kontyngent wojskowy walczący w wojnie indochińskiej po stronie „Południa” wystawiła Republika Korei. Intencją autora jest przywrócenie tego zapomnianego faktu polskiej literaturze naukowej. W artykule omówiono wojskowy, polityczny, społeczny oraz ekonomiczny wymiar uczestnictwa Republiki Korei w wojnie wietnamskiej. Skierowanie wojsk do Republiki Wietnamu było przejawem podjęcia aktywnej polityki zagranicznej ukierunkowanej na odbudowę podmiotowej pozycji państwa w przestrzeni międzynarodowej. Poprzez znaczny wysiłek wojskowy demonstrowano także znaczenie więzi sojuszniczych ze Stanami Zjednoczonymi. Należy też zwrócić uwagę, że wysiłek militarny za granicą skutecznie powiązano z prowadzonymi w kraju programami modernizacyjnymi, w tym ukierunkowanymi na budowę przemysłu obronnego. Widziany z takiej perspektywy udział w wojnie wietnamskiej jawi się więc jako jeden z ważnych czynników kształtujących współczesną Republikę Korei.
    The image of the Vietnam War operating in Poland has been shaped mainly by American war cinema. They present only the American image of the conflict. After all, the army of the Republic of Vietnam, which is the „host” of the US troops, appears in the background. Meanwhile, the second largest foreign military contingent fighting in the Indochina War on the side of the „South” was fielded by the Republic of Korea. The author’s intention is to bring this forgotten fact back to the Polish scholarly literature. The article discusses the military, political, social and economic dimensions of the Republic of Korea’s participation in the Vietnam War. Directing troops to the Republic of Vietnam was a manifestation of undertaking an active foreign policy aimed at restoring the state’s subjective position in the international space. Through a significant military effort, the importance of alliance ties with the United States was also demonstrated. It should also be noted that the military effort abroad was effectively linked to the modernisation programmes conducted at home, including those aimed at building the defence industry. Seen from this perspective, participation in the Vietnam War thus appears as one of the important factors shaping the modern Republic of Korea.
    Das Bild des Vietnamkriegs, das in Polen vorherrscht, wurde vor allem vom amerikanischen Kriegskino geprägt. Sie zeigen nur das amerikanische Bild des Konflikts. Schließlich steht die Armee der Republik Vietnam, die „Gastgeberin” der US-Truppen, im Hintergrund. Das zweitgrößte ausländische Militärkontingent, das im Indochinakrieg auf der Seite des „Südens” kämpfte, wurde hingegen von der Republik Korea gestellt. Die Absicht des Autors ist es, diese vergessene Tatsache wieder in die polnische wissenschaftliche Literatur aufzunehmen. Der Artikel erörtert die militärischen, politischen, sozialen und wirtschaftlichen Dimensionen der Beteiligung der Republik Korea am Vietnamkrieg. Die Entsendung von Truppen in die Republik Vietnam war Ausdruck einer aktiven Außenpolitik, die auf die Wiederherstellung der subjektiven Position des Staates im internationalen Raum abzielte. Durch einen bedeutenden militärischen Einsatz wurde auch die Bedeutung der Bündnisbeziehungen zu den Vereinigten Staaten demonstriert. Es sei auch darauf hingewiesen, dass die militärischen Anstrengungen im Ausland effektiv mit den Modernisierungsprogrammen im Inland, einschließlich der Programme zum Aufbau der Verteidigungsindustrie, verbunden waren. Unter diesem Gesichtspunkt erscheint die Teilnahme am Vietnamkrieg als einer der wichtigsten Faktoren, die die moderne Republik Korea geprägt haben.
