The article presents a case study of training engineers through social projects in the open source software movement. The project is aimed at development of a mobile application for behavioral therapy of autistic children. The application was developed within the framework of the students' group project carried out at Gdansk University of Technology with the participation of the Institute for Child Development in Gdansk. Paper presents design, implementation and evaluation of system, that supports activity schedule method of therapy. Such assistive technologies could improve behavioral therapy efficiency and as a result support self-care and independence of autistics, hopefully preventing their exclusion from the society. The case was evaluated from two perspectives: technological support provided for autistics' therapy as well as development of students' attitudes. Based on the therapists' and supervisor's evaluation as well as on analysis of final students' report, one might observe, that although student's motivations were diverse at the beginning of the project, by the end they fluctuated towards more intrinsic and altruistic ones. The example shows that the development of young people's sensitivity to social needs could be woven into the curriculum by defining individual projects for social institutions that provide help.

Ten artykuł dotyka ważnej kwestii, a mianowicie integracji osób niepełnosprawnych intelektualnie z grupą, a właściwie komunikacji w tej integracji. Oprócz wiedzy naukowej na ten temat, autor opisał tutaj casus pewnej podopiecznej z autyzmem, która uczęszczała do szkoły publicznej. Nieumiejętność wychowawcy klasy do tego, aby zintegrować Miłkę z koleżankami i kolegami, przekładała się na jej funkcjonowanie w tym zespole. Mimo chęci pomocy ze strony rodziców, ich komunikatów kierowanych do wychowawcy – nie przekładało się to na integrację. Dziecko było klasowym klaunem, bardzo szukającym akceptacji. Komunikacja z innym nauczycielem, który rozumiał potrzeby dziecka spowodowała, że odżyło ono, było nawet podziwiane ze względu na swoje talenty, przez co poprawiła się komunikacja. Sądzę, że to ważny głos w dyskusji na temat sposobów poprawy wzajemnych stosunków między dziećmi, niekoniecznie w klasach typowo integracyjnych. To, co nazwane – nie jest już obce, a temu służy komunikacja.
This paper addresses the important issue of the intellectual integration of handicapped persons within a group, and precisely – how to achieve effective communication and interaction in such integration. Apart from the scientific findings on this subject, the author describes a case of a child suffering from autism who attended a public (ie. State) school. The inability of the form teacher of the class to integrate Miłka with her fellow pupils influenced her functioning within the team. Despite the parents’ willingness to help, and what they told the teacher, there was no positive progress in the integration. The child was a “class clown”, constantly seeking acceptance. Communication with a different teacher who understood the needs of the child allowed her to “come alive” and even to be admired for her talents, which led to improved communication. I believe that it is an important voice in the discussion on the ways of improving the relationships between children and not only in classes for children with special needs. What has been named is no longer strange, and that is the purpose of communication

Opis:
Kanner’s autism is considered a complex and severe disorder of child development. Controversy surrounds not only its etiology, symptoms (including symptoms observed in the area of interpersonal communication) or treatment possibilities, but also education – at its various levels – of people influenced by its effects. Accordingly, the idea of teaching autistic children a foreign language, e.g. English, is the subject of a heated debate – opinions are divided both among spe-cialists working with autistic children and among autistic children’s parents. The article presents the results of studies conducted among parents of autistic children, focusing on their opinions concerning the viability and usefulness of teaching English to autistic children and its influence on their general development.
Autyzm wczesnodziecięcy zaliczany jest do grupy poważnych, złożo-nych zaburzeń rozwoju dziecka. Wywołuje liczne kontrowersje nie tylko w kwe-stii etiologii, objawów (w tym między innymi objawów związanych z obszarem komunikacji), możliwości terapii, lecz także edukacji – na poszczególnych eta-pach kształcenia – osób doświadczających jego skutków. Stąd ożywione dyskusje wywołuje również zagadnienie nauczania dzieci z autyzmem języka obcego, np. języka angielskiego. Zdania na ten temat są podzielone, szczególnie w gronie specjalistów pracujących z dziećmi z autyzmem, jak i wśród samych rodziców. W niniejszym artykule zostały przedstawione wyniki zrealizowanych badań na-ukowych w grupie rodziców dzieci z autyzmem wskazujące opinie badanych na temat możliwości oraz celowości nauczania języka angielskiego analizowanej ka-tegorii uczniów i jego wpływ na ich rozwój ogólny.

This text is an attempt to introduce the issue of the emancipation of autistic people. Autism spectrum disorders are a very heterogeneous category, and a person with such a diagnosis is achieved will vary in the degree of functioning due to the symp-toms and frequently co-morbid physical difficulties and/or mental and intellectual disability. Many examples of people with high functioning autism shows that this group is strongly working for independent living and self determination. The emancipation of autistic people understood in this way goes in different directions - from raise awareness about autism to self-advocacy.

Logopedic work with a child with autism requires a holistic approach. We cannot concentrate only on verbal communication. The author of the following work, describing cases of children with autism, emphasizes the importance of an early diagnosis and therapy of disorders. The article attempts to give reasons for the thesis stating that every single patient with autism requires an individual approach and an individual programme of enhancing the child’s development prepared by a speech therapist.
Praca logopedyczna z dzieckiem autystycznym wymaga podejścia holistycznego. Nie sposób koncentrować się tylko na mowie werbalnej. Autorka tekstu, opisując przypadki dzieci z autyzmem, podkreśla znaczenie wczesnej diagnozy i terapii zaburzeń. W artykule podjęto próbę uzasadnienia tezy głoszącej, że każdy pacjent z diagnozą autyzmu wymaga indywidualnego podejś.

W artykule podjęto próbę analizy stanu badań nad teorią umysłu oraz jej deficytem u osób z zaburzeniami ze spektrum autyzmu (ASD), szczególnie z Zespołem Aspergera (ZA). Poszukuje się w nim również związków teorii umysłu z oczekiwaniami, które wyznaczają reguły współzależności społecznej. W świetle analizowanych badań można stwierdzić, że teoria umysłu wiąże się, przez powszechne oczekiwanie empatii, z potrzebą i regułą akceptacji i szacunku. Biologicznie uwarunkowany deficyt teorii umysłu u osób z ASD prowokuje wysokie ryzyko ich odrzucenia jako niespełniających społecznych oczekiwań.
The author attempted to analyse the state of research on the Theory of Mind and its deficit in people with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD), especially those with Asperger Syndrome (AS). This analysis also searched for connections between the Theory of Mind and expectations which set the rules of social interdependence. In the aspect of the analysed research, it can be concluded that the Theory of Mind is connected – through a common expectation of empathy – with the need and the rules of acceptance and respect. The biologically conditioned deficit of the Theory of Mind of people with ASD causes a high risk of rejecting these people because they do not meet social expectations.

The childhood autism is a pervasive developmental disorder, still insufficiently known, though for the last 60 years the studies are continued. Many issues remain unresolved, however, some information crucial for understanding the core of autism has been also gathered. Children with autism provide fascinating data on the functioning of the human being. Every year new findings in genetics, molecular biology, neurophysiology are being provided, improving our ability to diagnose autism early and to intervene early. Some brain structures are responsible for recognition of emotions in the course of social interactions. This is a still fairly unknown field of research called "social brain". The studies on autism may provide support for the future understanding of the brains unfolded secrets, both at the biological and psychological level.

It has been observed in population of children with an autism spectrum a big diversity of emotional disorders symptoms – both as a quality diversity and as substantial diversity in strain. The most important symptoms of the disorder are considered to be: lack of ability of expressing and communicating the emotions, lack of ability of emotional signals perception, not understanding and lack of correct reaction for others emotions, oblivion of emotions and expectances of other people and lack of ability to forge and maintain the interactions. Particular problem is also the lack of empathy. The subject of an article is to emphasize the disorder of an emotional development considering children with autism, with a particular referring to their functional in a family relations.

Wstęp: Ważną rolę w kształtowaniu i rozwoju dzieci z autyzmem pełni najbliższa rodzina, dlatego współczesne działania skierowane są na jak największą aktywizację rodziców w procesie terapeutycznym. Dla efektywnej terapii bardzo ważny jest zadowalający stan zdrowia, zaangażowanie i dobre samopoczucie obojga rodziców, tj. matki i ojca. cel badań: Celem badań było przedstawienie, w jakim stopniu niepełnosprawność dzieci autystycznych wpływa na funkcjonowanie rodziców oraz wykazanie czy pomoc i działania terapeutyczne są potrzebne tylko dzieciom autystycznym, czy również ich rodzicom. Materiał i metoda: W badaniach wykorzystano Kwestionariusz SF- 36 oceniający jakość życia. Badaniami objęto grupę 70 rodziców dzieci autystycznych, natomiast grupę kontrolną stanowiło 70 rodziców dzieci rozwijających się prawidłowo. Wyniki: Badania potwierdzają obniżony poziom funkcjonowania rodziców dzieci autystycznych w dziedzinach życia takich jak: zdrowie ogólne, zdrowie psychiczne, funkcjonowanie spo- łeczne, ograniczenia związane z funkcjonowaniem fiycznym i psychicznym, energia i witalność. Wnioski: Poradnictwo, uświadamianie, profesjonalna pomoc rodzinom dotkniętym problemem autyzmu są niezbędne i mogą znacząco wpłynąć na poprawę ich funkcjonowania, a tym samym lepszą jakość życia. Tylko rodzic w pełni sprawny fiycznie i psychicznie może skutecznie pomóc swojemu autystycznemu dziecku.
Introduction: The important role in development of the autistic child is played by their closest family therefore contemporary therapeutic effcts place emphasis on highest activity of parents in the treatment process. For effiency therapy, satisfactory health condition, committed attitude and good mood of parents is essential. Purpose: This study aimed to present how strong is the hadipicapped child inflence on parent’s function in family and social environment and prove that the therapeutic aid is needed not only for children but also for their parents. Meterial and methods: This study examined 70 parents of children with autism and 70 parents with children developing properly (comparative group). To analyze foregoing problem the SF- 36 Questionnaire was used. results: Parents of autistic children has the poorer function than parents of children who develop without health problems in all analyzed areas of life (general health, physical functioning, mental health, social functioning, energy and vitality). conclusions: Appearing the handicapped child in family is always stressful situation especially in case of autistic child. Systematic screening of parents’ mental and physical health is indispensable and may improve their well – being and quality of life. Parent who has mental and physical health is able to give effctive help to autistic child.
