Opis:
The Japanese started coming to the United States at the end of the XIX century. The fact that they were not welcome was reflected in the US state and federal legislation. In the 1920s the Japanese society – embracing two generations – counted fewer than 300,000 people. The first generation, the Issei, were deprived of the right to naturalization. Their children, the Nisei – born in the United States and in the majority of cases Americanized – constituted the second generation. The Japanese lived mainly in Hawaii, as the biggest national minority, and in the West Coast, especially California. In the 1930s life was difficult for the Japanese living in the United States. Apart from the previous problems, they had to cope with new ones – connected with the economic crisis and Japan’s foreign policy. Their widespread and selfless support for Japan’s aggression against China was not only disapproved of by Americans; it also complicated their situation on the eve of the war. On the other hand, it was the time when the Nisei actively joined political life. Their biggest organization, the Japanese American Citizen League (JACL) was quite successful and in the Territory of Hawaii some Japanese became members of the local legislature for the first time.

Opis:
W drugim okresie – w latach 1932-2000 – nastąpił wzrost zmienności międzyrocznej SST i stopniowy, trójfazowy wzrost SST (trend +0,006(±0,001)°C•rok-1, sumaryczny wzrost rocznej SST o 0,7 deg do ~+1°C).
The paper presents the results of the analysis of changes in sea surface temperature (SST) of the sea area extending to NW from the northern part of the Antarctic Peninsula in the years 1900-2012. Three periods of SST changes were noted: – period covering years 1900-1932 with relatively stable behaviour of the SST (zero trend, a small inter-annual variability, low average annual SST – ~ 0.3°C), – period covering years 1932-2000 with an increase in inter-annual variability of SST and a gradual three-phase increase in SST (trend 0.006 (± 0.001)°C•yr-1, the total increase in annual SST of 0.7 degrees (up to ~ 1°C). The highest average value of the SST was noted in 2000. – period covering years 2000-2012 – a period of rapid drop in SST (trend –0.048 (± 0.010)°C•yr-1, SST decrease of ~ 1 degree). The analysis of monthly trends shows that the changes in SST are the result of advection of water resources with different heat carried from the west by the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. Changes in SST in the analyzed sea area in the last period are not connected with changes in macro-scale atmospheric circulation (SAM Southern Annular Mode, Antarctic Oscillation). The described changes in the SST occurring in 2000-2012 may lead to changes in the trend of temperature changes at the stations on the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula.

Opis:
W artykule porównano warunki klimatyczne i bioklimatyczne N części Ziemi Oskara II z innymi obszarami zachodniego wybrzeża Spitsbergenu w okresie 1975-2000. Klimat Ziemi Oskara II przedstawiono na podstawie danych meteorologicznych ze stacji Ny Alesund. Klimat centralnej i południowej części zachodniego wybrzeża Spitsbergenu reprezentują odpowiednio stacje: Svalbard-Lufthavn i Hornsund. Dla wymienionych obszarów obliczono i przeanalizowano różnice pomiędzy średnimi miesięcznymi i rocznymi wartościami wybranych elementów meteorologicznych (wiatr, zachmurzenie, temperatura i wilgotność powietrza oraz opady atmosferyczne) i wskaźników biometeorologicznych (niedosyt fizjologiczny, wielkość ochładzająca powietrza, wskaźnik ochładzania wiatrem, temperatura ochładzania wiatrem, przewidywana izolacyjność odzieży).
The paper describes the climate and bioclimate of the tundra zone in the northern part of Oscar II Land (the area from Jonsfiorden to Kongsfiorden) from 1975 to 2000. A comparison with the climate and bioclimate of other parts of the west coast of Spitsbergen is also presented. For the analysis, meteorological data from three stations (Ny Alesund, Svalbard Lufthavn and Hornsund) were used (Fig. 1). Significant differentiation of climatic conditions on the west coast of Spitsbergen was found (Table 1 and Fig. 2). Wind direction and speed was strongly modified by the local topographic conditions. For this reason, the lowest mean annual wind speed (by 1.2 to 1.7 m/s) of the three analysed stations, was in Ny Alesund. The degree of cloudiness was similar at Ny Alesund and Svalbard Lufthavn, while at Hornsund it was greater by about 6%. Mean annual air temperature at Ny Alesund is slightly higher (by 0.1°C) than at Svalbard Lufthavn and significantly lower (by 1.1°C) than at Hornsund. In the annual course, in comparison with the central part of the west coast, the northern part of Oscar II Land is markedly warmer in winter (on average by 1.0°C) and significantly colder in summer (by 1.0°C). An opposite relationship may be noted when comparison is made with the southern part of Spitsbergen. The greatest values of relative humidity occur in the southern and northern parts of Spitsbergen, while in the central part of the western coast their values are smaller (in particular in summer). Atmospheric precipitation was twice as low in the central part of the western coast of Spitsbergen as it was in its northern and southern parts. Differences in bioclimatic conditions were found on the west coast of Spitsbergen (Table 2, Fig. 3). To establish their characteristics, a number of biometeorological and thermophysiological indices were used. These enabled the estimation of the sensations of heat in humans standing outdoors in this part of Spitsbergen. Analysis of the physiological deficit (D) values on the west coast of Spitsbergen indicate that water evaporation from the human upper respiratory tract during the whole year is high. The cooling power (H) shows significant differences between different parts of western Spitsbergen. The mean number of days per year with thermal comfort for humans oscillated between 11 at Svalbard Lufthavn and 18 at Hornsund to 42 at Ny Alesund. On the other hand, days with cold discomfort were most frequent in central (277) and southern (271) parts of Spitsbergen, while in the northern part they rarely occurred (only 217). The best thermal sensations (described as 'cool') according to the wind chill index (WCI) occur from June to September at all stations, and also in May at Ny Alesund. In the other months conditions described as 'cold' were noted over the entire area. Days with a possibility of frostbite were noted with an annual average frequency of about 10 at Ny Alesund and 25 at Svalbard Lufthavn and Hornsund. The wind chill temperature (WCT) throughout the west coast of Spitsbergen shows the dominance of moderate sensations of cold from November to April. During the summer months (July and August) sensations of 'cold' did not occur. The insulation predicted index (Iclp) was used to estimate the bioclimate of Spitsbergen from the point of view of an individual's need for clothes to obtain thermal comfort. The index was calculated for a standing man and a man who is walking at a speed of 4km/h. Its values for the standing individual oscillated from 4.35 clo at Hornsund to about 4.49 clo at Svalbard Lufthavn. On the other hand, for the walker, clothes would need half the thermal insulation level to obtain thermal comfort.

Opis:
The purpose of the presented article is to indicate to what an extent and how the most opinion-forming dailies and weeklies in Germany reported events taking place on the Polish coast in December 1970. The workers’ revolt, which ended with a bloody suppression by the army and militia, took place only a week after the agreement between the People’s Republic of Poland and West Germany had been concluded. Analyzing this issue, research questions can be asked, both about the number and size of articles as well as their nature. Were they predominantly accounts of the course of events or were commentaries also popular? Was, and if so, to what an extent social unrest in the People’s Republic of Poland and the removal of Władysław Gomułka from power perceived as a threat to the just initiated process of rapprochement on the Warsaw–Bonn line? To what an extent did the publications in dailies and weeklies differ from each other? Finally, the question is whether the press appearing in the Federal Republic of Germany published information on reactions of the public of this country, acts of solidarity, or voices of condemnation addressed to the authorities in Warsaw? The study undertook a critical analysis of texts describing the events of December 1970, establishing the chronology of these events. This analysis was also comparative in nature, as the content of the articles was compared with the former researchers’ findings on the course of individual days of the December tragedy. No less important for this text was the linguistic analysis, aimed at indicating to what an extent reports and columns regarding the situation in Poland were emotionally loaded, and to what an extent they constituted substantive, emotionless political analyzes. The next research method used in the presented research was the quantitative method. Its application made it possible to determine the number of articles referring to events in Poland and to indicate specific days when they had appeared in individual dailies and weeklies. The results of the query and analysis of press articles indicate that, despite the information blockade, journalists managed to map, with a high degree of vagueness, the real course of workers’ protests, especially their causes and the actions of the authorities leading to the brutal suppression. From the point of view of the West German editors, reports obtained from journalists from Scandinavia who had managed to get to Szczecin and Słupsk played a significant role here. In this way, the descriptions of events from both cities quickly obscured the dramatic situation in Gdańsk and Gdynia, including the symbol of December 1970 – an episode related to the death of Zbyszek Godlewski (“Janek Wiśniewski”), which hardly appeared in the media in Germany. A separate research problem to which special attention should be paid are the numerous social and economic analyzes of the situation in Poland published in West German press in December 1970. They pointed to the economic premises as the main reasons for the outbreak of protests, while criticizing the policy of Gomułka, which had led Poland to the economic stagnation. A similar position was taken by the government of Chancellor Willy Brandt, who at first took an expectant attitude, and then, through the words of the government’s spokesman Conrad Ahlers, drew attention to the chronic economic problems of the so-called Eastern Bloc. Despite some anxiety, journalists calmly accepted events in Poland, especially the removal of Gomułka from power and him being replaced by Edward Gierek. It was anticipated that the new Polish leader would continue the policy of rapprochement with Germany, and more broadly with the West.
