Relying on post-war biographies of Henryk Sienkiewicz, the article provides an insight into how his life as a writer was modelled through recurring similarities and differences of representation. Both factual and methodological portrayals seem uniform. In 1954 the biographical calendar presented by Julian Krzyżanowski became a point of reference for all following profiles of Sienkiewicz. Moreover, the biographers seem to utilize personal documents in a similar manner – they are to validate their stories. The resulting life writing appears to hold peculiar control over the protagonist’s life, suggesting that special-temporal distance allows us to see more than Sienkiewicz did himself.

The paper discusses how the concept of “image” functions in the writing of Henryk Sienkiewicz. The author of Quo vadis, the novel honoured by a Nobel prize, has been depicted as a “worshipper of images”, both concrete images: works of art, views of nature, as well as the form of description typical of that epoch: literary image. Literary images were composed with the “painter-like” usage of language, a method which aimed to create in the reader's imagination some definite visual images. They also served to bring to mind the past and, directly, to organize the literary material. This was owing to their moment-like character: the static episode was shown in one temporal moment, and to their course in time: the sequence of images, a cycle that shows events extended in time. The examples cited here to support the above theses are derived from Sienkiewicz's letters, critical enunciations and literary works. The criterium for their selection was a willingness to point at the manner in which the author of Quo vadis understood antiquity. The writer was well-versed in the artistic output of his contemporary academic painters, and many times exploited the manner in which they perceived the ancient times, especially apparent are the relationships between Sienkiewicz and Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Jean-Léon Gérôme and Henryk Siemiradzki (the latter was his intimate friend). Ancient Greece was for the creator of Diokles a cradle of civilization, while Rome served mainly his historiophilosophical reflections, being a synonym of pagan, materialistic civilization, therefore doomed to perdition. The paper discussed also the genesis of Quo vadis, the manner in which the novel was written and which was close to the romantic “aesthetic of a passage”, for which the concept of image and imagery thinking was essential. A separate part of the paper is devoted to the illustrations to Quo vadis, the illustrations which depict only those scenes of the novel which not only concern its plot but also visually dominate in the text. Particular attention has been devoted to such figures as Piotr Stachiewicz and Jan Styka. The paper closes with a conclusion that both the writing of Sienkiewicz himself and many, directly or indirectly linked with his work, painters and illustrators, manifest how vivid was the idea of correspondence between arts in the 19th century. This idea could be incorporated mainly through paintings, being one of the basic categories that functioned in the epoch, both artistic and cognitive.

The article deals with the biographies of Henryk Sienkiewicz created in connection with the writer’s death and the celebration of bringing his body to Warsaw. These are texts of a more journalistic than documentary character, marked by rhetorical pathos, building the figure of the national writer – the successor of the romantic poets. For the description of their specificity the concept has been used which appears in the biographical studies written in English as “biomythography”, understood as a particular type of ideological narration with a distinct surplus of symbolic meanings.

Artykuł poświęcony włoskim podróżom Henryka Sienkiewicza. Perpektywa uświęconego wielowiekową tradycją Grand Tour zastąpiona zostaje tu jednak doświadczeniem maladycznym. Śmierć Marii, która zmarła na gruźlicę osierociwszy dwójkę dzieci, skazała Sienkiewicza na życie w ciągłym napięciu, w jakimś stanie rozgorączkowanego niepokoju. I właśnie zapis owego niepokoju, lęku, "gorączki" - stanowi tekstowy ślad, kartograficzny zapis "mapujący" doświadczenia rozpadu.
Il saggio è dedicato ai viaggi italiani di Henryk Sienkiewicz. La prospettiva del Grand Tour, santificata da secoli di tradizione, è qui sostituita da un’esperienza maladica. La morte di sua moglie, che morì di tubercolosi lasciando orfani due figli, con dannò Sienkiewicz ad una vita in costante tensione, in uno stato di ansia febbrile. Ed è la registrazione di questa ansia, paura, “febbre” – che costituisce la traccia testuale, la registrazione cartografica dell’esperienza della disgregazione.
The article is devoted to the Italian travels of Henryk Sienkiewicz. The perspective of the time-honored “Grand Tour” is replaced here by a maladic experience. The death of his wife, who died of tuberculosis, orphaned two children, condemned Sienkiewicz to a life of constant tension, in some state of feverish anxiety. And it is the record of this anxiety, fear, „fever” that constitutes a text trace, a cartographic record “mapping” the experience of disintegration.

Henryk Sienkiewicz, polski noblista, jest uznawany za mistrza słowa i wizjonera. Jego dzieła obrazowo przedstawiają przeszłość Polski. Krytycy literaccy i biografowie nie są zgodni co do pochodzenia słynnego pisarza – czy w jego żyłach płynęła tatarska krew? W artykule przedstawiono problematykę genealogii Henryka Sienkiewicza oraz wybrane wątki tatarskie zawarte w jego dziełach. Według A. Korzińskiej w Hani i Selimie Mirzy Sienkiewicz ukazał Tatarów jako wyznawców islamu, którzy zasymilowali się z Polakami. Natomiast w Niewoli tatarskiej przedstawił obraz islamu wrogiego, zaś samych Tatarów jako ludzi dzikich i bezwzględnych. W Trylogii niezwykle istotnymi postaciami byli Tatarzy: Tuhaj-bej oraz Azja Tuhajbejowicz. W dyskusji nad pochodzeniem H. Sienkiewicza istotne są wyniki badań genetycznych, jakie przeprowadził prawnuk noblisty – Bartłomiej Sienkiewicz, uczestniczący w projekcie Genographic.
Henryk Sienkiewicz, an epic writer, winner of the Noble Prize in Literature (1905), is widely celebrated for his masterly stories about some of the most turbulent events in Polish history. His biographers and literary scholars disagree over his family roots. Was he a scion of Tatars? The present article examines Sienkiewicz’s genealogy and Tatar threads in his novels. A. Korzińska claims that Hania i Selim [Hania and Selim] tells a story of assimilated Tatars, whereas Niewola Tatarska [Enslaved by Tatars] shows them as ruthless savages. Two major protagonists in Sienkiewicz’s famous Trilogy, Tuhaj-bej and Azja Tuhajbejowicz, are Tatars. Genetic research, conducted by the writer’s greatgrandson, Bartłomiej Sienkiewicz (Genographic Project), is an important contribution to the discussion on Henryk Sienkiewicz’s descent.

The paper discusses two prominent figures in Polish literature, Józef Ignacy Kraszewski (1812–1887) and Henryk Sienkiewicz (1846–1916), and the role women played in their lives, influencing their works. In the beginning, the author devotes some attention to the role of ‘muses’ and their inspiration to artists from Antiquity to Romanticism. In the analytical part of her paper, she presents the differences between these two masters of the quill. Kraszewski let excessive emotions take the reins in his private life, as a consequence of which he frequently misplaced his affections, suffering considerable disappointments. Sienkiewicz, although highly susceptible to female charms, was more mature, as is well reflected in his works. His life experience influenced the artistic maturity of his female protagonists. Thus, towards the end of his life, he was able to conclude that love was the highest value. The ‘muses’ of this first Polish Nobel laureate in literature exerted a profound influence on the literary profile of the heroines of his greatest novels.

Celem artykułu jest próba odpowiedzi na pytanie jakim człowiekiem prywatnie był Sienkiewicz oraz jakie relacje łączyły go z członkami najbliższej rodziny. Podstawą analizy są wybrane cechy językowe (zwłaszcza formy adresatywne i leksyka nacechowana) oraz treść listów prywatnych H. Sienkiewicza. Ekscerpcja materiału objęła korpus ponad 600 listów pisanych w ciągu prawie 40 lat do sześciorga członków najbliższej rodziny. Ze względu na adresatów korespondencji i poruszaną w niej problematykę najwięcej miejsca poświecono relacjom małżeńskim i rodzicielskim. W toku badań ujawniono wiele istotnych, ciekawych szczegółów z wciąż jeszcze słabo poznanego życia prywatnego, uczuciowego Sienkiewicza.
The aim of the article is an attempt to answer the question of what kind of person Sienkiewicz was privately and what relations he had with the immediate family. The analysis is based on selected linguistic features (especially formative and lexical) and the content of H. Sienkiewicz’s private letters. The selection of the material encompasses more than 600 letters written in nearly 40 years to six immediate family members. Because of the addressees of the correspondence and the issues involved, most focus is placed on the marriage and parental relations. The research revealed many important, interesting details from Sienkiewicz’s still little-known private and emotional life.

The subject of the research are literary convergences that link the prose of the forgotten writer of the Positivist period, Stanisław Grudziński, with the works of Henryk Sienkiewicz, especially with his Trilogy. The comparative analysis includes Grudziński’s novels (Powieści ukraińskie, 1879–1880; Zuch dziewczyna. Powieść obyczajowa, Warszawa 1879). The confluences concern characteristic linguistic devices that render the Ukrainian flavour, fictional entanglements and literary portraits of the main and the secondary protagonists, the identical names of Zagłoba and Horpyna appearing in the texts of both writers. However, the above may be considered as manifestations of dissimilarities within the similar. Sienkiewicz may have been using the same cultural inspirations as Grudziński for the purpose of conjuring up the Ukrainian reality. It is also possible that Sienkiewicz remembered some elements of Grudziński’s prose, using those motifs and ideas which he considered worth developing. In relation to his hypothetical literary predecessor, Sienkiewicz appeared incomparably superior in terms of his artistic imagination, patterns of storytelling, creative development of his characters, as well as his mastery of language. In effect, Sienkiewicz obliterated the memory of Grudziński, who could have served as a model for his own literary works.
