The present paper is the second of two papers investigating polyglot dictionaries which comprised Polish and English wordlists. It rests on the assumption that, by providing the earliest documentation material for Polish and English respectively, the polyglots can be regarded as historical antecedents of bilingual dictionaries. While the first paper focused on three Renaissance works of reference, including Calepino’s eleven-language edition, this one concentrates on two relatively little known endeavours of the Enlightenment: Christoph Warmer’s Gazophylacium decem linguarum Europaearum … (1691) and Peter Simon Pallas’ Linguarum totius orbis vocabularia comparativa … (1787–1789). The bilingual material they embrace has been analysed and illustrated with examples in order to shed new light on the two polyglots, which are additionally traced back to their sources.

This paper aims to provide a survey of the early polyglot dictionaries which paired Polish with English, based on the premise that the polyglots can be considered as predecessors of bilingual dictionaries proper. Following this rationale, the authoress examines chronologically the first three of the multilingual endeavours: Ambrogio Calepino’s Dictionarium undecim linguarum … (1590), Hieronymus Megiser’s Thesaurus polyglottus: vel, dictionarium multilingue … (1603), and Georg Henisch’s Teütsche Sprach und Weissheit. Thesaurus linguae and sapientiae Germanicae … (1616). The focus is primarily on the linguistic material of the polyglots, but the assumed aims and readership are also tackled briefly. As bilingual wordbooks have traditionally catered to the needs of users of one or both of the respective languages, the polyglot dictionaries are additionally looked at from the perspective of Polish-English language contact in the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries.

This paper gives short characteristics of historically-conditioned differences in legal realities of the Polish and English legal languages. Then, the translation strategy suggested by Kierzkowska in her book Legal Translation is discussed. Twelve methods of providing translation equivalents for non-equivalent terminology are presented. Finally, the author gives examples from the Polish Civil Code of 1964 to illustrate the possibility of using the Louisiana Civil Code as a terminological and phraseological database of equivalents for Polish statutory terms. The tables included in the paper show selected terms from the field of property and contracts among others taken from the Polish Civil Code of 23 April 1964 and a comparison of equivalents suggested by bilingual dictionaries available on the Polish market, the translation of this Code done by the Polish Society of Economic, Legal and Court Translators TEPIS.

The article “Polish-English Commercial Affairs in the Years 1918–1939”aims at explaining the readers economic problems between the two countries a topic so rarely dealt within Polish historiography. The main sources for this article were professional economic magazines published in Warsaw in the 1920s and 1930s. England, in the statistics of the Second Republic of Poland, year by year has been playing a more important role as a importer of Polish goods, thus becoming for a couple of years – since 1931– the most important country, to which Polish goods were exported. In the article, the reader will also find the texts of two Polish-English commercial treaties, signed on 26th November 1923 and 27th February 1935. Their influence on goods exchange between Warsaw and England has been analysed. A lot of space has been devoted to coal rivalry between the two countries. It started off with the English miners’ strike at the end of the year 1926 and lasted until an agreement was signed on 6th December 1934.

According to etymological sources, Polish dziecko ‘a child’ and English felicity ‘joy, happiness’ are cognates, as they derive from the same Proto-Indo-European root *dhe(i) ‘to suck’. Despite the fact that these two have chosen two different paths in their semantic evolution in different cultures (dziecko in Slavic one, and felicity first in Romance culture, later in Germanic one), it seems that they were both mentally associated with babyhood and maternity at a certain moment in the past. The objectives of the paper are the following. First, I want to present the Slavic etymology of the lexeme dziecko, as well the Romance and Germanic etymology of felicity. Second, I aim to chase and discuss their semantic evolution from Proto-Indo European root *dhe(i) ‘to suck’ to their contemporary meanings. Third, I choose to find and explain the extralinguistic (cultural) factors which motivated the above mentioned semantic changes. In order to explicate the motivation behind culturally conditioned semantic alteration, a reference is made to the theory of linguistic worldview, as understood by Jerzy Bartmiński (2002, 2006), as well as to panchrony, as viewed by Przemysław Łozowski (2010, 2018).

Stanisław Tadeusz Wołowski came from a Polish-English family from Płock. He got involved in the conspiracy between 1860 and 1863, emigrated, came back to the country at the end of his life. He was associated with the Warsaw painters community.

Praca dotyczy wykorzystania tekstów paralelnych do ustalania ekwiwalentów konotacyjnych i denotacyjnych na potrzeby przekładu polsko-angielskiego. Autorka na przykładzie terminów i syntagm z prawa zobowiązań umownych (najem i dzierżawa) pokazuje, w jaki sposób osiągać ekwiwalencję konotacyjną i denotacyjną. Jako źródła ekwiwalencji konotacyjnej posłużyły brytyjskie ustawy dotyczące najmu i dzierżawy. Natomiast jako źródła ekwiwalentów denotacyjnych w przekładzie polsko-angielskim autorka proponuje tekst ustawy amerykańskiej Louisiana Civil Code oraz przekład polskiego Kodeksu cywilnego na język angielski wydany przez wydawnictwo TEPIS. Ponadto, autorka wskazuje, że na poziomie ekwiwalencji tekstowonormatywnej– szczególnie syntagm (połączeń wyrazowych nazywanych w języku angielskim także word combinations lub word collocations, a w języku polskim m.in. związkami frazeologicznymi lub frazeologizmami) – teksty paralelne stanowią nieodzowne źródło informacji,którego nie może zastąpić żaden słownik.
The article touches upon the usage of parallel texts for determining connotative and denotative equivalents for the purpose of Polish-English translation. The terms and syntagms from the law of contracts (contracts of lease and tenancy) serve the purpose of showing the method offinding equivalents. British statutes on lease and tenancy are used to determine connotative equivalents. At the same time Louisiana Civil Code as well as the translation of the Polish Civil Code into English by TEPIS are used to find denotative equivalents for Polish legal institutions. Finally, the author points out that at the level of textual-normative equivalence (especially in the case of word collocations or combinations) parallel texts are an indispensable source of translative information which cannot be replaced by any dictionary.

This paper deals with the analysis of language and translation mistakes and errors in the translation of Polish testaments into English. This article presents a selection of examples from the translation assignments of students of the postgraduate School of Translation, Interpreting and Foreign Languages at Adam Mickiewicz University. The author presents incorrect translations into English and explains why they are not proper in the translative situation. The examples are illustrated with the author’s suggestions of correct equivalents. There is also a short description of the spotted types of language and translation errors and mistakes. The identified problems result from the translation method applied (which is not always properly chosen), syntactic and grammatical differences between Polish and English, as well as culturally-conditioned differences in Polish and English legal realities.

W opracowaniu zaprezentowano materiały do nauki języka angielskiego jako rzadko wyzyskiwane źródła do badań przeszłości polsko-angielskich kontaktów językowo-kulturowych. Ogląd tekstów edukacyjnych pozwolił: prześledzić czynniki decydujące o wysokim prestiżu języka angielskiego na ziemiach polskich, zaobserwować sposoby wykorzystania elementów kultury anglosaskiej w celach wychowawczych, wskazać rodzaje zjawisk interferencyjnych możliwych do analizowania w tekstach pisanych przez osoby bilingwalne. Obserwacje przeprowadzono zgodnie z założeniami lingwistyki antropologicznej, akcentującej związki między człowiekiem, językiem i kulturą w badaniach nad sposobem używania języka przez naszych przodków.
The study presents materials for learning English as rarely exploited sources for research into the past of Polish-English linguistic and cultural contacts. The viewing of educational texts allowed to: examine the factors determining the high prestige of English among Poles, observe ways of using elements of Anglo-Saxon culture for educational purposes, indicate the types of interference phenomena possible to analyze in texts written by bilingual people. The observations were carried out in accordance with the assumptions of anthropological linguistics, stressing the relationship between man, language and culture in the study of our ancestors’ language use.

A researcher undertaking the eflort to study the history of Polish-English diplomatic relations in the first half of the 17th century may use only a few doubtfully meritorious sources, that is some memoirs written by our members of parliament (e.g. by Paweł Działyński 1597, Jerzy Ossoliński 1621, Jan Zawadzki 1633) and travellers (e.g. Jakub Sobieski 1609). A careful study of those memoirs allows one to answer the fundamental question: what was the role that England played in Polish politics and what was the role of Polish Republic in English politics in the times of ‘the silver age’ (the 17th century)? What are the conclusions? The reign of James I was the best period of Polish-English relations although it was only Polish Republic that benefited from it. Charles Stuart’s succession to the throne brought about the change in the relations with Polish Republic. The scenario of Polish-English political games was hardly written into the politics; politics written with capital ‘P’ (e.g. negotations in Altmark). Poland would estimate the mutual relations taking into consideration the conflicts with neighbouring countries, Turkey and Sweden; England would consider the economy (the Eastland Company) and the matters of the Palatine of Rhine. One cannot help the impression that those mutual relations were peripheral to the grand politics and they could not turn out to be decisive or determining for any of the two countries. Such was the case with the matrimonial policy, i.e. the plan of getting Princess Elisabeth Stuart, James I’s daughter, married to Prince Wladyslaw, the son of Zygmunt III (Sigismundus). The question whether Poland and England could politically do without each other still remains a rhetorical one.

Praca dotyczy wybranych problemów związanych z wieloznacznością terminów występujących w polskim prawie cywilnym oraz postępowaniu cywilnym. Autor analizuje znaczenie dwóch terminów występujących w tych gałęziach prawa tj. kurator i dowód. Zwłaszcza termin kurator jest bardzo kłopotliwy dla tłumaczy, gdyż ma około 17 znaczeń w zależności od kontekstu w jakim się on pojawia. Autor przedstawia ekwiwalenty słownikowe proponowane dla tych terminów w wybranych słownikach prawniczych polsko-angielskich. Na koniec zostaje wyciągnięty wniosek, że słowniki rzadko pozwalają na wybór właściwego ekwiwalentu gdyż nie zawierają indeksów umożliwiających wybranie właściwego znaczenia terminu wieloznacznego. ponadto, niektóre sugerowane w słownikach ekwiwalenty są problematyczne.
 The articles touches upon selected problems connected with polysemous words occurring Polish language of civil law and civil procedure. The author presents the meanings of two terms that is: kurator and dowód. Especially kurator is a very troublesome term under Polish law as it has about seventeen meanings depending on the context in which this term is used. Next, he presents translative equivalents of those words which may be found in selected bilingual Polish-English dictionaries of legal terms. Finally, it is concluded that bilingual dictionaries rarely help to solve the problem of polysemy as there are no contextual indexes which would help choose the proper English equivalent. What is more, some suggested dictionary equivalents are questionable.
