Opis:
The subject of the article is a description of the grammatical information in Edition I of S. B. Linde's Dictionary (1807-1815) that is a contribution to a characteristics of the lexicographic methods used by the author of the Dictionary. The information here has a grammatical-semantic character; hence many of its elements do not belong to a formal description of the language. An example of subordinating grammatical information to semantics is Linde's introduction of the Greek category of medium for a description of Polish verbs. In the article attention is also paid to the bilingual (Latin-Polish) grammatical terminology, the syntax of information and lack of uniformity in abbreviations and spelling.

Krzysztof Kluk
Opis:
The aim of this paper is to discuss the writings by Krzysztof Kluk (1739–1796), a naturalist of the Enlightenment, the author of Dykcjonarz roślinny (Dictionary of plants) and guidebooks in the fi elds of botany, zoology, and mineralogy as lexical sources of Słownik języka polskiego (Dictionary of Polish) by S.B. Linde (LD). The paper presents an analysis of the material excerpted from Volumes 1 and 3 of LD, which has allowed the estimation that K. Kluk is discussed more frequently in the dictionary than J. Kochanowski, P. Kochanowski, J. Przybylski, and only slightly less frequently than M. Rej and W. Potocki. The material has been analysed also with the use of the method of semantic fields, which has enabled identification of the thematic circles that allow the determination of the angle from which S.B. Linde excerpted vocabulary from K. Kluk’s writings. The lexis from Kluk’s works in LD is not limited only to names of plants, animals or minerals; it covers also parts of the body, animal husbandry (e.g. horses, birds, bee-keeping, fishery), gardening, agriculture, animal diseases, metal and mineral working, transport, construction, home appliances, food, clothes, and social life.

etymology
Opis:
Linde’s theory and practice of etymology must not be evaluated solely through the lens of modern linguistics, but also from the point of view of late 19th century language (especially Slavic language) studies. Against the general background of late 18th/early 19th century linguistics, his theory of etymology may be granted tentative approval, even though it contains many mistakes and nonsensical conclusions. Linde compiled the views of many of his predecessors (such as de Brosses, de Gébelin, Adelung, Ihre, Wachter and Dobrovský), but also attempted to modify some of their thoughts and add his own. It is not true (as stated in Zwoliński 1981) that no connection exists between the etymological theories of Dobrovský and Linde. The Polish lexicographer did indeed partially utilise the Czech’s work. Such approval cannot, however, be extended to Linde’s etymological practices as regards comparing Polish and Polish-Slavic lexical material: even though 65% (i.e. 547) of etymological fields contain correctly compiled vocabulary, mistakes occur in 35% (i.e. 292) of them. That Linde’s etymology-deriving principles were ineffective is evidenced by the fact that each of these 292 etymological fields should – based on the state of knowledge in the late 19th/early 20th century – be split into from 2 to 19 etymological fields. On the other hand, his etymological lists that cite words from many Indo-European languages, such as Polish and other Slavic languages, Latin, Greek, German and Baltic languages, and Sanskrit, should be viewed with some approval. Most of the comparisons found in Linde’s etymological treatise, which contains about 1,300 entries, bear similar marks of plausibility. The possibility of Bopp, Rask and Grimm being familiar with the inquiries of the Polish lexicographer and amateur linguist cannot be excluded. In the 19th century, Linde’s etymological principles influenced the so-called inspired linguists, including J. Kamiński, J. Lelewel, A. Mickiewicz and C.K. Norwid.

This article investigates the conference as a means of preaching the word of God. This is a subject of interest for fundamental homiletics. The article was based on the material from Fr. Jankowski’s conferences in print, gathered in the book Ciasna brama i wąska droga. O współczesną odnowę życia zakonnego (The narrow gate and the hard way. The renewal of contemporary religious life). It is a record of Author’s conferences on consecrated life. The chronicles of Abbey of Tyniec, from the period of 1985–1993 (the time when fr Jankowski served as an Abbot), were used as a source as well. The main purpose of the article is to answer the question: what are the features that allow us to identify Fr Augustyn as a conference giver?

Opis:
The present paper summarises the general affinities that link the great romantic piano fantasies (Schubert’s Op. 15, Schumann’s Op. 17, Chopin’s Op. 49 and Liszt’s B minor Sonata) by means of the presence of dual structures of various kinds, including the tonal, formal and an extramusical, interpretational ‘false bottom’, the latest often of autobiographical nature. One of the most prominent dual structures present in all the above mentioned fantasies is a so-called ‘duble-function form’ (apart from far-reaching individualism in detailed solutions) which have no roots in the tradition of keyboard fantasia written by predecessors. As possible source of inspiration some oeuvres of Beethoven are often evoked. However, the paper juxtaposes them with the tradition of the so-called reprise overture, a particular kind of sonata form (called also ‘interpolated sonata form’ as its key element consists in an intrusion of slow movement within the course of sonata form) that emerged in the circles of Italian 18th century opera, widespread often in conjunction with the scope to link an operatic sinfonia with the rest of the drama. Examples by Salieri, Mozart and Haydn are briefly analyzed to show the variety of solutions and posing the hypothesis that reprise overture might be (as transferred well into the 19th century by many operatic composers and ‘kleine Meisters’ that used it in purely instrumental pieces) one of the possible - and unexpected - roots of the formal design of the greatest oeuvres in piano literature ever composed.
