Opis:
The article takes as its starting point Pavel Muratov’s book Images of Italy, considered a fundamental text for Polish accounts of travels to Italy in the 20th century. For the generation of Iwaszkiewicz and Herbert, a journey to Italy meant a true pilgrimage to “sacred places of culture”, accompanied by a strong sense of cultural inferiority. The next generation of Wojciech Karpiński and Ewa Bieńkowska treats the experience of a journey as a return to a common home, to the Italian that is European tradition marked with the great names of its predecessors. The youngest authors, Marek Zagańczyk and Adam Szczuciński, continue this tradition that may be called aesthetical, which is on the other hand contested by Dariusz Czaja, exploring another Italy little known to travellers – Calabria and, Basilicata – and opposing the model of a journey viewed as a continuous reference to others’ texts.

Opis:
This paper is focused on a volume of short essays and notes by Maria Kuncewiczowa entitled Notatki włoskie. Przezrocza (Italian notes. Slides) from 1985. The first part is devoted to the evolution and the literary realizations of the Italian journey, starting from 1918, in order to offer an interpretation of the place occupied by Kuncewiczowa’s work in the panorama of contemporary Polish literature. In the second part, the author analyzes the genesis and genre of this literary text, recognizing its characteristics as a silva rerum, a traditional formal model of Polish literature which experienced renewed fortune in the second half of the twentieth century. The third part of the essay constitutes its thematic core: the author analyzes the image of Rome in all its many facets, relating it to the writer’s poetics and worldview.

Opis:
The article La Rilettura del romanzo Il fu Mattia Pascal di Luigi Pirandello nell’otica del racconto cinematografico di Mario Monicelli, presents an individual story of Mattia Pascal and his reincarnations in Adriano Meis and the late Mattia Pascal. It concentrates on the journey of the main character, in the original dimension of time and space, in search of a new, happy life and of his identity. In reference to the subject matter included here, various different theories are applied to the cinematic analysis of the ‘new’ work of Pirandello.
Artykuł podejmuje próbę interpretacji/odczytywania powieści L. Pirandella Św. Pamięci Mattia Pascal przez znanego włoskiego reżysera filmowego M. Monicellego. Tematyka artykułu związana jest z jednej strony z rolą, jaką odgrywa perspektywa podróżowania, czyli nieustanna zmiana miejsc w czasoprzestrzeni Włoch i Francji, z drugiej zaś dotyczy złożonej problematyki tożsamości, czyli konfliktu osobowości głównego bohatera Mattia Pascal i jego reinkarnacji w Adriana Meis i św. pamięci Mattia Pascala. Analizie towarzyszą liczne teorie o charakterze literackim, filmoznawczym i kulturoznawczym, związane z omawianą tematyką zekranizowanej powieści.

Written down in French, the diary of a journey through France and Italy (1784–1786) by Count August Fryderyk Moszyński (1731–1786) – architect, collector, and erudite man, passionate about art and science, an important figure of the Polish Enlightenment, collaborator, and friend of King Stanislaus II Augustus – is a veritable mine of information for the researchers of the 18th century. The aim of this article is to supplement or clarify information on the last weeks of the Count’s life he spent in Padua and Venice, and the circumstances of his death, as well as to find out if he was a promoter of Polish culture when he travelled in the Veneto region. The analysis of his travel diary made it possible to identify elements concerning real or hypothetical links between the culture of Serenissima and that of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, as well as comparisons between the political and cultural life of the two countries. Selected entries from the diary have been juxtaposed with other sources from the period, thanks to which it has been established, among other things, that Moszyński visited Padua on his way to Venice, around 22 May 1786, and returned to that city to watch the horse races at Prato della Valle on 27 June 1786. By using and interpreting archival documents kept in Warsaw and Venice, it was possible to definitely establish the circumstances of the traveller’s death (place, date, cause) and burial (date, location).

Opis:
This is an attempt to compare events related to the tragic end of the life of Queen Bona Sforza d’Aragona and Hürrem Sultan (also known as Roxelana). The main portion of the story is preceded by a section relating Bona’s journey from Poland to Italy and outlines the context of political connections to the House of Habsburg. Accordingly, reasons for the grant of the loan by Bona Sforza to Philip II King of Spain are discussed. As we know, this put a tragic end to the life of the Polish queen. Even if Bona Sforza was a victim of Habsburgs’ actions aimed against her, with a considerable participation of Gian Lorenzo Pappacoda, Roxelana – treated in this text a reference point for Bona – fell victim to her own intrigues. Bona’s and Roxelana’s political activity focused on the same area in Europe. Roxelana’s acts led to the death of two sons of Suleiman the Magnificent: Mustafa and Bayezid. In turn, Bona, who was defeated by the Habsburgs, abandoned her daughter Isabella, who fought against the dynasty. Her aim was to secure the future of her son and Bona Sforza’s grandson – Jan Zygmunt Zapolya.
Zasadniczą część narracji poprzedza obszerny passus, w którym z jednej strony omówiona została podróż Bony z Polski do Italii, z drugiej zaś zarysowany został kontekst relacji politycznych, jakie łączyły ją z dynastią Habsburgów.

Opis:
The article is an attempt at reconstructing the remarks by Paweł Hertz (essayist, poet, translator, writer and publisher) on Italy and its artistic legacy. A short presentation of the writer is followed by a discussion of his actual journeys in Italy based on the available autobiographical material. Next, there are reflections on Hertz’s interest in Italian literature and European texts about Italy (based on essays and editorial work). Treated as a separate issue is the view of Italian art through the prism of Polish artistic work (the spheres of associations, interference and references) in Hertz’s journalism. Other issues discussed in the article cover poems about Italy, their placeamong the writer’s works and the main threads and motifs. The article’s final notes focus on the observations on the value of Polish reception of Italian cultural legacy and its basic aspects that Hertz regularly emphasised at various stages of his creative life.

Opis:
Queen Maria Casimira d’Arquien Sobieska had much contact with Venice. During Jan Sobieski III’s lifetime, the queen kept in touch with Venetian diplomats (such as Angelo Morosini and Girolamo Alberti), imported luxury goods, imported luxury goods from Venice, and was interested in the local culture. The queen’s departure from the countryside for the Eternal City in October 1698 determined that, at the very beginning—after crossing the Empire’s border with Italy—she would meet the main cities of Veneto, Verona, Padua, and Venice. She returned to the Venetian Republic in 1705, when the queen, with papal permission, went to meet her daughter Teresa Kunegunda, Electress of Bavaria. In this article, several aspects of the queen’s journeys are included, apart from the political matters already indicated. Firstly, the article details the ceremony of reception of the queen-widow by the authorities of the Serenissima, representatives of the Venetian elite, and envoys of foreign countries residing in Venice. Next, the article draws attention to the places that the queen visited and the piety she manifested, and it presents observations related to city life formulated directly by Queen Maria Casimira Sobieska and her courtiers, also in relation to the cities of Verona and Padua. Finally, the author of the article points out the queen’s interest in the dramatic and musical repertoire presented on Venetian stages and in the whole of cultural life, including the carnival. To conclude, the author draws attention to the differences in the treatment of the royal status of the queen, depending on the political changes taking place in Europe and the reception of cultural and religious threads in the queen’s life.
