Opis:
The article deals with the representation of Italian pronunciation in five contemporary dictionaries for young Slovenian learners. As the use of a dictionary not only stimulates the development of lexical competence, but can also serve as a useful means for pronunciation learning, the article investigates five categories representing phonetic-phonological features in a dictionary: introduction to phonetics/phonology (e.g. a pronunciation guide), phonetic transcription, phonemes, consonant length and accent. The representation of these features in a dictionary for young learners should be clear and coherent, and in some cases a dictionary (especially a dictionary intended for the youngest users) should also featureaudio pronunciations. The five dictionaries analysed are fragmentary with regard to the pronunciation: only one dictionary includes audio recordings (although the relation between the spelling and the pronunciation remains unclear, as it does not include a pronunciation guide); two dictionaries include deficient phonological transcriptions and incomplete pronunciation guides; one dictionary contains only the Italian alphabet with corresponding phonemes, while another dictionary is without any elements that could familiarize a Slovenian learner with Italian pronunciation.

Opis:
This article analyses the functions of the Italian present and past conditional; the grammatical equivalents in Slovenian, Croatian, Macedonian, and Polish; and the equivalents in translations of Gianni Rodari’s Favole al telefono. In the case of the Italian present conditional of eventuality, the “standard” equivalents prevail in all the translations: the Slovenian present conditional; the Croatian first conditional; the Macedonian conditional and future; and the Polish potential conditional. With other translation solutions (the present tense, past tenses), the modality is frequently expressed by other linguistic—mainly lexical— means. The translation equivalent of the Italian present conditional of unconfirmed information in all translations is the present tense. The Italian past conditional of eventuality was translated in most cases by its “standard” translation equivalents: the Slovenian present conditional; the Croatian first and second conditional; the Macedonian conditional, future, future in the past, and reported future; and the Polish potential conditional. When the translators decided to depart from translation solutions temporally or modally close to the source verb form (by choosing, for example, the present tense or one of the past tenses), they frequently preserved or introduced other modal elements. The translation equivalents of the Italian past conditional of the future-in-the-past are the future or the present tense with future meaning. Slovenian, Croatian, Macedonian, and Polish translations of Gianni Rodari’s Favole al telefono include, on the one hand, different grammatical equivalents that, in the languages analysed, “ideally” correspond to the two Italian conditionals (the most specific equivalents in the languages analysed include, for example, Macedonian future tenses and the Croatian second conditional), and, on the other hand, alternative translation equivalents (the present tense; past tenses; adverbial and prepositional expressions; omissions), which indicate different stylistic preferences of the translators.

The Name of the Rose
Opis:
The article is dedicated to the analysis of the linguistic-textual representation of Salvatore in Umberto Eco’s novel The Name of the Rose and its Slovene, Croatian, Czech and Polish translations. The first part of the article deals with different linguistic and intertextual layers composing Salvatore’s original utterances, while the second part is devoted to Salvatore’s translated language, concentrating – primarily – on his heteroglossia and intertextuality. Salvatore is a grotesque plurilinguistic and intertextual character born out of the rich erudite immagination of Umberto Eco. The four translated Salvatores appear also as strange babelic monks whose multilingualism expands by adding a dominant Slavic linguistic element to the source-text heteroglossia. The intertextual dimension of translated Salvatores, on one hand, diminishes as most source-text citations blend into the translated linguistic mosaic, but, on the other hand, it also increases by gaining an additional metatextual (translational) dimension and, equally important, by incorporating a substantial part of Eco’s original text.
