The purpose of this is to analyze the toponyms present in some Italian-Polish and Polish-Italian bilingual dictionaries. After selecting a “skeleton” of the dictionaries that trace part of the history of the bilingual lexicography in question, we move on to the analysis of the toponyms used in the dictionaries. In a lexicultural context, understood as the transfer of the cultural elements of a given language, we observe the choices made by lexicographers of the different eras and try to understand the reasons, sometimes of a personal nature or dictated by the historical context, or sometimes influenced by the political system in a given country. At the same time, we want to highlight the evolution in the diachronic field that toponyms and their equivalents have had in the dictionaries in question, as well as their value in teaching a particular foreign language.

The interest of Polish scholars in literary works written in Ruthenian or in Polish language in the borderlands of the Commonwealth varied in different periods. By the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 1930s, Poland was rather focused on the construction of her new national state and the accentuation of her civilizational mission towards Eastern Slavic literature. After World War II, the new borders of the Polish state under Communist rule directed the attention of Polish scholars and cultural dealers toward a new national conception, whose goal was to eradicate the memory of the Commonwealth and to canalize the intellectual efforts towards “truly” Polish heritage, anti-German antagonism and politically correct ideologies. However, some groundbreaking works were written in the 1960s. Radical changes appeared after 1989. Publications multiplied exponentially in the 1990s and 2000s. Post-colonial studies emerged. In Polish scholarship and culture, two main trends may be indicated: on the one hand, the need to analyze the cultural, linguistic and literary specificities of the borderlands of Ukraine and Belarus in the Lithuanian Grand principality and in the Crown territories; on the other, the need to consider in a systemic approach all the components (Ruthenian, Polish, Lithuanian, Jewish, German) of society and culture of the Rzeczpospolita. The article focuses on the most interesting trends and publications of the periods indicated above.

Stanisław Niegoszewski (1565-post-1600) was a prime example of a Renaissance man: he was a student at the universities of Krakow and Padua; a poet-improviser; an alchemist; a courtier of King Sigismund Vasa III; a diplomat; a devout follower of the Counter-Reformation; and a businessman. He divided his life between Poland and Italy, and his biography is known to us so fragmentarily that some scholars reconstruct his life based on instinct, assumptions, personal preference, or unfounded hypotheses. Henryk Barycz, the eminent scholar and author of entries in the Polish Biographical Dictionary, had divided the deeds and works of one Stanisław Niegoszewski into two different persons: “Stanisław Niegoszewski (Niegoszowski), coat of arms of Jastrzębiec (circa 1560-5 - circa 1588-90),” a student at the universities of Krakow and Padua and a poet-improviser, and “Stanisław Niegoszewski (Niegoszowski), coat of arms of Jastrzębiec (circa 1565-70 - after 1607),” an alchemist, courtier of King Sigismund Vasa III, diplomat, devout follower of the CounterReformation, and poet as well. Although Władysław Magnuszewski proved wrong Barycz’s theory about the existence of two Niegoszewskis nearly a half-century ago, the outdated theory is repeated by new generations of scholars again and again. This paper attempts to prove that all three sojourns in Padua of a certain Niegoszewski—as a student in 1582-1583, as an alchemist in 1585, and as a royal diplomat in 1594—belong to the same person. Based on new sources found in Italian archives and libraries in 2013, the biography of a single Stanisław Niegoszewski could be reconstructed with much more detail than before.
Stanisław Niegoszewski (1565-post 1600), studente dell’Università di Cracovia e di quella di Padova, poeta-improvvisatore, alchimista, cortigiano di re Sigismondo III Vasa, diplomatico, fervente sostenitore della Controriforma ed uomo d’affari, fu uno dei primi esempi di uomo del Rinascimento. Egli trascorse la sua vita fra la Polonia e l’Italia. La sua biografia ci è nota in modo tanto frammentario che alcuni studiosi ricostruiscono la sua vita basandosi sull’istinto, presupposizioni, preferenze personali ed ipotesi infondate. Henryk Barycz, eminente ricercatore ed autore di varie voci del Dizionario Biografico Polacco, ha scisso le vicende e l’opera di Stanisław Niegoszewski in due persone differenti: ”Stanisław Niegoszewski (Niegoszowski), dello stemma di Jastrzębiec (1560-5 ca. - 1588-90 ca.)”, studente delle università di Cracovia e di Padova nonché poeta improvvisatore, e ”Stanisław Niegoszewski (Niegoszowski), dello stemma di Jastrzębiec (1565-70 ca. - post 1607)”, alchimista, cortigiano di re Sigismondo III Vasa, diplomatico, fervente sostenitore della Controriforma nonché poeta. Sebbene Władysław Magnuszewski abbia confutato la teoria di Barycz sull’esistenza di due Niegoszewski circa mezzo secolo fa, essa viene ribadita da sempre nuove generazioni di studiosi. In questo articolo mi sforzo di dimostrare che tutti e tre i soggiorni di Niegoszewski a Padova, come studente negli anni 1582-1583, come alchimista nel 1585 e in qualità di diplomatico reale nel 1594, riguardano la stessa persona. Sulla base delle nuove fonti da me rinvenute negli archivi e nelle biblioteche italiane nel 2013, la biografia di Stanisław Niegoszewski, lo stesso, è stata ricostruita con molti più dettagli di prima.

The Italian pluperfect (trapassato prossimo) differs from other past tenses due to the fact that it implies a point of reference situated in the past. Although it is frequently used in both written and spoken language, little space is devoted to this tense in textbooks of Italian for foreigners. This can be explained by taking into consideration the following two factors: on the one hand, the Italian pluperfect usually can be substituted by other tenses (like the present perfect, passato prossimo, and preterite, passato remoto); on the other hand, the choice of the speaker to use this tense is often difficult to explain. In other words, the abovementioned point of reference is sometimes difficult to locate. A full comprehension of the Italian pluperfect can be problematic for a Polish speaker, as contemporary Polish does not have tenses with similar functions. The aim of this paper is to reflect on the teaching of the Italian pluperfect to Polish students, highlighting some linguistic issues that should be considered by the teacher.
Il trapassato prossimo è un tempo verbale che si distingue rispetto agli altri tempi passati per il fatto di presupporre la presenza di un momento di riferimento collocato nel passato. Nonostante il suo uso sia frequente anche nell’italiano parlato, lo spazio dedicatogli nei manuali di italiano per stranieri è spesso limitato. Ciò si può spiegare considerando due fattori: da una parte il trapassato prossimo può essere spesso sostituito da altri tempi “concorrenti” (in primis passato prossimo e passato remoto); in secondo luogo la scelta del parlante di servirsi di tale tempo risulta a volte ardua da spiegare. In altre parole, può essere difficile individuare il momento di riferimento sopra menzionato. La comprensione del trapassato prossimo può risultare problematica per uno studente polonofono, in quanto il polacco contemporaneo non presenta tempi con funzioni analoghe. Con questo articolo si vuole riflettere sull’insegnamento del trapassato prossimo a studenti di lingua polacca, evidenziando alcune questioni di natura linguistica che dovrebbero essere prese in considerazione dal docente.

Authors such as Marceli Handelsman, Adam Lewak, Kalikst Morawski, Stefan Kieniewicz, Marian Żychowski, Emanuel Halicz, just to mention some of the most influential among them, have made the history of the Polish historiography of the Risorgimento, expanding the range of knowledge on the ideas and protagonists of that era and opening the way for a new generation of historians that continues today to look after this important field of historical studies.

The term o f rhetoric has known several senses since its foundation as techne o f persuasion by Aristote. This paper presents the historical reasons o f limitation o f the first rhetorical project into the scholar treaties in n ^ - l i ) 111 centuries. The next question is to explain the revival o f rhetorical tradition with Chaim Perelman Olbrechts-Tyteca Traite de ¡’argumentation focused on the theory o f argumentation and the French “nouvelle critique” focused on linguistics and stylistics. The key-term for both linguistic and philosophic approach o f new rhetoric is a figure o f speech. The author tries to find out if the modern reunified vision o f rhetoric is possible and suitable.

Italy, seen as the cradle of European culture and the destination of the wanderings of Polish intellectuals and artists, often appears in the Polish press of the late-19th and early-20th centuries. Among the cities described, Padua is present, although it appears less frequently than Venice or Rome. Articles dedicated to this city, however, have a particular character, because not only is “Padova la dotta” famous for the cult of Saint Anthony, but it is most often presented in the contexts of centuriesold Italian-Polish relations linked mostly to the University and of the Paduan polonica. There are in fact two moments that find a particular resonance in the Polish press: the first, in 1922, for the seventh centenary of the University, and the second, in 1931, for the celebrations of the seventh centenary of Saint Anthony’s death. This article offers a review of the texts that have appeared in various periodicals and includes a brief presentation of the authors—scholars, artists, or journalists active in the promotion of Italian culture. From the texts published both in newspapers and in cultural magazines or even scientific periodicals, the image of the city emerges as strongly marked by the presence of Poles, who were students, university professors, or pilgrims.
L’Italia vista come culla della cultura europea e l’obiettivo delle peregrinazioni degli intellettuali e artisti polacchi appare spesso sulla stampa polacca degli ultimi decenni del XIX e dei primi del XX secolo. Tra le città descritte Padova non costituisce un tema così frequente come Venezia o Roma. Gli articoli dedicati a questa città hanno tuttavia un carattere particolare perché “Padova la dotta”, oltre ad essere famosa per il culto di sant’Antonio, è presentata il più spesso nel contesto di multisecolari relazioni italo-polacche legate per lo più all’Università e quello dei polonica padovani. Due momenti inoltre trovano una risonanza particolare: il 1922 per il settimo centenario dell’Università e il 1931 per le celebrazioni del settimo centenario della morte del Santo. L’intervento propone la rassegna degli articoli apparsi su diversi periodici con una breve presentazione degli autori: studiosi, artisti o giornalisti attivi nella promozione della cultura italiana. Dai testi pubblicati sia nei quotidiani che sulle riviste di cultura o addirittura periodici di tipo scientifico emerge l’immagine della città fortemente segnata dalla presenza dei polacchi: studenti, professori dell’Università o pellegrini.

W artykule przedstawiono kilka istotnych aspektów roli Zofii Kozarynowej w rozwoju polonistyki na Uniwersytecie Turyńskim w latach, w których pracowała tam jako lektorka, pomagając turyńskim polonistkom Marii i Marinie Bersano Begey, a przede wszystkim Clotildzie i Cristinie Garosci w ich pracach tłumaczeniowych i badawczych. Działalność Zofii Kozarynowej, będąca częścią promocji kultury polskiej we Włoszech, prowadzonej przez polskie instytucje, jest rekonstruowana na podstawie pozostawionych przez nią pism, a także w odniesieniu do wspomnień innych uczonych oraz niepublikowanych źródeł archiwalnych.
The paper deals with some relevant aspects of the role played by the writer Zofia Kozarynowa in the development of Polish studies at the University of Turin in the interwar period, where she was sent by the Polish Ministry of Education as an exchange language teacher and where she assisted the Turin scholars Maria and Marina Bersano Begey and especially Clotilde and Cristina Garosci in their translation and research work. The contribution of Zofia Kozarynowa, seen as part of the activities of promotion of the knowledge of the Polish culture in Italy supported by the Polish authorities, and for which Roman Pollak was responsible, is reconstructed on the basis of Kozarynowa’s and other authors’ writings, as well as on the basis of unpublished archival sources.

The goal of the present paper is to offer a comparative study of the consonantal phonological inventories of Italian and Polish. The first discrepancy between the two languages discussed in the paper is related to the fact that some Polish and Italian phonemes do not have any correspondents in the other language. The second issue addressed in this work is the fact that some Italian segments seem very similar to selected Polish sounds, and yet, as the paper shows, in some cases substantial differences need to be noted. The last issue presented in the paper concerns selected properties of Italian and Polish geminates.
Lo scopo di questo lavoro è quello di effettuare uno studio comparativo degli inventari consonantici dell’italiano e del polacco. La prima differenza tra le due lingue di cui parla il presente saggio è legata all’assenza dei fonemi corrispondenti in uno dei due sistemi. La seconda questione sollevata nel lavoro è l’apparente somiglianza di alcune consonanti italiane e polacche, che, pur essendo simili nell’italiano e nel polacco, presentano discrepanze fonetiche e fonologiche molto significative. L’ultimo argomento compreso nell’analisi è il confronto delle geminate dell’italiano e del polacco.

Polish inflexional morphology, with its rich inventory of rules relating to noun declension, also involves surnames of foreign origin. Generally, these surnames should be inflected just as Polish common names or adjectives are, depending on the inflexional paradigm to which they belong. However, the declension of foreign nouns involves various complications of phonetic, orthographic, and, most of all, inflexional natures, not only because of a relatively high number of rules governing the Polish morphological system, but also because some of these rules have not yet been determined in a definitive manner and the declension itself, in some cases, is optional. For this reason, speakers of Polish, to avoid inflecting a given surname, often prefer to adopt various editorial strategies, so to speak; in their texts, however, we can still find numerous incorrect inflexional forms and inconsistent or outright wrong inflexional strategies. With this article, then, I intend to expose the detailed rules relating to the declension of Italian surnames in Polish and analyse the occurrences of these surnames in Polish texts that have appeared in Italica Wratislaviensia.
La morfologia flessiva polacca, con il suo ricco inventario di regole relative alla declinazione sostantivale, coinvolge ugualmente i cognomi di provenienza straniera. In linea di massima, simili cognomi andrebbero declinati come nomi comuni o aggettivi polacchi, a seconda del paradigma flessivo cui appartengono. In realtà, la declinazione dei sostantivi stranieri comporta vari problemi di natura fonetica, ortografica e, soprattutto, flessiva, non solo per via di un numero relativamente alto di regole che governano il sistema morfologico polacco, ma anche perché alcune regole non sono state determinate in maniera definitiva e la stessa flessione, in alcuni casi, non è obbligatoria. In effetti, gli utenti della lingua polacca, per evitare di declinare un dato cognome, preferiscono spesso ricorrere a varie strategie redazionali. Nei loro testi non mancano, però, né forme sbagliate dei cognomi, né strategie flessive incoerenti o addirittura scorrette. Con il presente lavoro si intende, quindi, esporre in maniera possibilmente più dettagliata le regole relative alla declinazione dei cognomi italiani in lingua polacca insieme all’analisi delle occorrenze di tali cognomi nei testi polacchi apparsi su Italica Wratislaviensia.

This article deals with the learning of some spatial prepositions in Italian L2 by Polish learners. Italian and Polish differ in at least two ways, as Polish expresses syntactic relations by a full case system, while Italian relies only on prepositions. More importantly, according to Talmy’s classification, Polish is a satellite-framed language while Italian is verb-framed, but later studies have shown that these categories are not perfectly binary but fuzzy. In the learning of prepositions, three elements are in play: a natural progression from simpler to more complex prepositions; the conceptualisation of the event in which the prepositions are used to express spatial relations; and the semantic categorisation of the participants into the event, in particular the basic one, Ground. By means of different elicitation techniques (questionnaires, frog story, and written tasks), many oral and written texts have been collected from Polish learners of Italian of different levels of competence. It has been revealed that the influence of the motion-event typology affects the learning of the motion expressions in an irrelevant proportion; this is probably due to the fact that Polish, like other Slavic languages, appears to be less satellite-framed than Germanic languages, being characterised by the weak autonomy of the verbal prefixes. The inappropriate uses of prepositions confirm the natural progression of complexity, and the semantic categorisation of the Ground also exerts an influence. In any case, the interplay of these different forces gives rise to different personal idiosyncrasies.
L’articolo verte sull’apprendimento di alcune preposizioni spaziali in italiano L2 di apprendenti polacchi con diversa competenza della lingua obiettivo. Il quadro teorico adottato è quello della linguistica cognitiva e del “(re-)thinking for speaking”. Secondo alcune ricerche, la distanza tipologica tra L1 e L2 condiziona il processo di apprendimento sia a livello grammaticale sia a livello cognitivo, in quanto implica la proiezione di un sistema concettuale su un altro. Quest’aspetto produce interferenza linguistica tra la lingua sorgente e la lingua obiettivo. Italiano e polacco differiscono in almeno secondo due parametri; il polacco esprime le relazioni sintattiche con un esteso sistema di casi, mentre l’italiano dispone solo delle preposizioni. Inoltre, secondo la classificazione di Talmy, il polacco è una lingua satellite-framed mentre l’italiano è verb-framed. Studi successivi hanno, però, dimostrato che queste categorie non sono mutamente esclusive ed i confini tendono ad essere sfumati. Nell’apprendimento delle preposizioni entrano in gioco tre elementi, una progressione naturale da quelle più semplici a quelle più complesse, la concettualizzazione dell’evento in cui le preposizioni sono impiegate e la categorizzazione semantica dei partecipanti all’evento. I campioni, scritti e orali, sono stati raccolti con varie tecniche di elicitazione. L’influenza che la tipologia del “motion event” esercita sul processo di apprendimento si rivela scarsa, probabilmente perché il polacco, come altre lingue slave, appaiono meno satellite-framed delle lingue germaniche, dal momento che il preverbo è dotato di meno autonomia. L’uso di preposizioni non appropriate conferma la progressione naturale della complessità.

The paper aims to discuss the specific characteristics of Italian employment contract from a linguistic point of view as well as from the point of view of the translation. First of all, the employment contract as a legal document will be discussed in regard to the text classifi cation proposed by Sabatini (1990). Moreover, the general typology of Italian and Polish employment contracts will be taken into consideration. The analysis is complemented by Polish equivalents of the main Italian terms and phrases used usually in the employment contact. The final comments will be dedicated to the issue of translation procedures used for dealing with the translation shifts proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet (1958) and Cosmai (2007).

The study presents the first analysis of the descriptions of Verona and the works of art collected in the city in the accounts of Polish travellers from the 17th to 19th centuries. As the researched source material shows, initially Poles visited the city only while passing through, on their way to Venice, stopping for a moment to see the only object “worth seeing”: the 1st-century Roman amphitheatre located in the city centre. At that time, the descriptions of the city are laconic, as Verona was considered “secondary” in Italy. Only in the era of the Grand Tour, and especially in the second half of the 18th century, did Polish travellers intentionally visit Verona. They employed an experienced tour guide from the Bevilacqua family (recommended to their countrymen by Ignacy Potocki). They used specialised literature (Torello Saraina’s Dell’origine et ampiezza della città di Verona, Verona 1586; Scipione Maffei’s Verona illustrata e Museum veronense hoc est antiquarum inscriptionum atque anaglyphorum collectio, Verona 1749; and Giovanni Battista Da Persico’s Descrizione di Verona e della sua provincia, Verona 1820), the purchase of which became one of the goals of a visit to Verona. In the 18th century, the sightseeing route (reconstructed based on the accounts of Katarzyna Plater) included ancient architecture (Roman amphitheatre; Borsari Gate; Vitruvius Arch; Gavi Arch), museum collections (ancient art by Scipione Maffei; collections of paintings and sculptures of the Bevilacqua family; and Francesco Calzolar’s Theatrum naturae, where the most admired objects were fossils from Monte Bolca), the modern architecture of Michele Sanmicheli (Palio Gate and Cappella Pellegrini), and Venetian paintings (Tintoretto and Veronese). Only in the 19th century did the church of San Zeno appear among Verona’s must-see sites, described in detail as an excellent and rare example of Romanesque architecture; the house and tomb of Juliet was also included, though its state of preservation was completely inadequate to the image of Shakespeare’s drama and it tended to disappoint travellers.
Il saggio presenta la prima analisi delle descrizioni di Verona e delle opere d’arte raccolte in città nei racconti dei viaggiatori polacchi del XVII-XIX secolo. Come risulta dalle ricerche effettuate, inizialmente i polacchi visitano la città solo di passaggio, sulla strada per Venezia, fermandosi qui per un momento per vedere l’unico oggetto “degno di essere visto”: l’anfiteatro romano del I secolo situato nel centro della città. A quel tempo le descrizioni della città erano laconiche, in quanto era considerata “secondaria” in Italia. Solo all’epoca del Grand Tour, e soprattutto nella seconda metà del Settecento, i viaggiatori polacchi si dirigono intenzionalmente a Verona. Usano un cicerone consigliato da Ignacy Potocki. Utilizzano letteratura specializzata (Torello Saraina, Dell’origine et ampiezza della città di Verona, Verona 1586, Scipione Maffei, Verona illustrata e Museum veronense hoc est antiquarum inscriptionum atque anaglyphorum collectio, Verona 1749 e Giovanni Battista Da Persico, Descrizione di Verona e della sua provincia, Verona 1820), il cui acquisto diventa uno degli obiettivi di una visita a Verona. Nel XVIII secolo, il percorso turistico (ricostruito sulla base del racconto di Katarzyna Platerowa de domo Sosnowska) comprendeva opere antiche (anfiteatro romano, Porta Borsari, Arco di Vitruvio, Arco Gavi), collezioni museali: arte antica di Scipione Maffei, collezione di dipinti e sculture della famiglia Bevilacqua e il Theatrum naturae di Francesco Calzolari, dove i più ammirati erano i fossili del Monte Bolca, e l’architettura moderna di Michele Sanmicheli (Porta Palio, cappella Pellegrini) e la pittura veneziana (Tintoretto, Veronese). Solo nell’Ottocento, tra i must see veronesi apparve la chiesa di San Zeno, descritta nei minimi dettagli come un eccellente e raro esempio di architettura romanica, e la casa e tomba di Giulietta, il cui stato di conservazione, del tutto inadeguato all’immagine del dramma di Shakespeare, delude i viaggiatori.
