Italian dialects occupy an important position in the history of Italian linguistics and are still present and relevant in the linguistic panorama of modern Italy. The purpose of this article is to outline the linguistic image of Italy by drawing attention to its dialects. Through analysis of the situation after unification in Italy in 1861, the author attempts to mark off functions and roles which dialects used to serve. In the second part of the article she concentrates on the phenomena of nuova dialettalità, or the new perspective and collocation of dialect in the Italian linguistic panorama of the 21st century. This article is a part of a research project dedicated to functions and uses of dialects in the Italian cinematography.

Il saggio affronta il tema della sopravvivenza dell’ordine dei gesuiti sul territorio della Russia zarista dopo la soppressione papale del 1773. Basandosi su fonti manoscritte conservate negli archivi ecclesiastici di Roma e Cracovia ma anche sulla bibliografia edita, il testo offre uno sguardo sistematico e sintetico sulle motivazioni che portarono i diversi attori in campo – dai religiosi a Caterina II – a sostenere la sopravvivenza dell’ordine in Russia. In particolare l’articolo esamina e illustra le strategie comunicative adoperate dai gesuiti e la loro diversificazione a seconda dei destinatari; inoltre, propone una riflessione sui modi adoperati dagli ignaziani per un mantenimento della propria identità, per esempio sul piano educativo.
This article deals with the theme of the survival of the Jesuit order in the territory of Tsarist Russia after the papal suppression of 1773. Based on manuscript sources preserved in the ecclesiastical archives of Rome and Krakow, but also in relation to the published literature on the subject, the text offers a systematic and synthetic look at the reasons that led the various heroes of these events-from the religious figures to Catherine II-to support the survival of the order in Russia. In particular, the article examines and illustrates the communication strategies used by the Jesuits and their diversification according to their recipients; moreover, it proposes a reflection on the ways in which the sons of St. Ignatius tried to maintain and secure their own identity, for example at the educational level.

During the last Baìo in 2007, I interpreted carnival as an occasion to investigate popular traditions. Agricultural feasts have been present since ancient times, sometimes hidden behind the veil of other meanings: today they represent a way to allow the present society to feel itself as a continuation of the past. The communities of small local areas show a representation of their identity through ancient rituals – like manifestations, such as the Baìo – to sew their relationships with the modern territory. Those rituals also demonstrate several, and sometimes unexpected, connections with different cultures of the present and the past.

By considering three works of Primo Levi, Elsa Morante, and Fulvio Tomizza, this analysis aims to investigate some examples of composite and paradoxical identities. Regarding the matter in question, I will examine cases in which the elements shaping the subjects, especially language, will be discordant with the proposed identity. In Primo Levi’s La tregua, the author seeks to account his Jewish belonging, despite his lack of knowledge of Yiddish. Morante investigates the troubled linguistic identity of Aracoeli’s protagonist, while the extreme hybridism of Stefano in Tomizza’s L’albero dei sogni allows remarkable forms of estrangement to surface. Thanks to the support of identity theorists such as Baumeister and Chambers, and of theorists of the monolingual/plurilingual condition such as Fishman and Lepschy, I will employ a more fluid notion of identity in order to contemplate different variables and solutions, which may lead to contradictions. These three authors can, therefore, be considered forerunners of recent literary studies on migration, which deal with the impellent necessity to remove the limits imposed by strict definitions of identity.
Prendendo in considerazione tre opere di Primo Levi, Elsa Morante e Fulvio Tomizza, quest’analisi si propone di indagare alcuni esempi di identità composite e paradossali. Nella fattispecie verranno esaminati casi in cui le componenti formanti l’identità del soggetto, tra cui in primis la lingua, risulteranno discordanti rispetto all’identità dichiarata. Ne La tregua di Primo Levi, l’autore cercherà di render conto della sua appartenenza ebraica, nonostante la mancata conoscenza dell’yiddish; la Morante si addentrerà nella travagliata identità linguistica del protagonista di Aracoeli, mentre l’ibridismo esasperato di Stefano de L’albero dei sogni tomizziano farà emergere marcate forme di straniamento. Grazie al supporto di alcuni teorici del tema dell’identità, tra cui Baumeister e Chambers e del monolinguismo/plurilinguismo, quali Fishman e Lepschy, sarà possibile far emergere un concetto di identità più fluido, in grado di contemplare molteplici variabili e soluzioni, non esenti talvolta da contraddizioni. I tre autori possono quindi considerarsi degni anticipatori dei recenti studi letterari sulla migrazione, che hanno sempre più a che fare con l’impellente necessità di rimuovere i limiti imposti da definizioni identitarie rigide.

The aim of the article is to analyse the theme of cultural identity in the novel „I grandi occhi del mare” by Leonard Guaci. Starting from Gioia di Cristofaro Longo’s theoretical assumptions concerning the connection between identity and culture, we stress the influence of Italian culture on the sense of identity felt by the characters who represent Albanians living in the period of Enver Hoxha’s communist dictatorship. The analysis also draws on the theories of scholars such us Hannah Arendt, Homi Bhabha, Dominique Chancé, Giovanni Marchetti, Nora Moll.

Methodius’ Discourse on the Resurrection (De resurrectione) is an extensive and profound presentation of the ecclesiastic understanding of this dogma in the context of the dissent towards certain opinions of Origen, and Platonic currents in Christianity. At the onset of the IV century, one of the central theological problems lay in demonstrating the rationality of the conceptualisation of “the resurrection of the flesh”, as well as a detailed explanation of its essence. The aim of this article is to indicate and describe those elements acknowledged by Methodius as necessary and constitutive for the orthodox understanding of the dogma. A further aim is an analysis of the application of his argumentations, focused on evidencing the identity of the resurrected body in respect of the earthly one, in both matter and form. The article also attempts to understand the essential motivations which induced the bishop of Olympus to address the very complex issue of resurrection during the Diocletianic persecutions. In light of earlier studies, an evaluation of the argumentations of the author of De resurrectione is proposed, in the context of the doctrinal debates of his times.
Dialog Metodego O zmartwychwstaniu (De resurrectione) jest obszernym i pogłębionym przedstawieniem kościelnego rozumienia tego dogmatu w kontekście polemiki z niektórymi poglądami Orygenesa i platonizujących nurtów w chrześcijaństwie. W początkach IV w., jednym z kluczowych problemów teologicznych było wykazanie racjonalności formuły „zmartwychwstanie ciała” oraz szczegółowe wyjaśnienie jej treści. Celem artykułu jest wskazanie i opisanie elementów, uznanych przez Metodego za konieczne i konstytutywne dla prawowiernego rozumienia dogmatu oraz analiza zastosowanej przez niego argumentacji, ukierunkowanej na wykazanie tożsamości ciała zmartwychwstałego z ziemskim, tak co do materii, jak i formy. W artykule podjęta też została próba zrozumienia zasadniczych motywacji, które w okresie prześladowań Dioklecjańskich skłoniły biskupa Olimpu do zajęcia się w sposób tak kompleksowy kwestią zmartwychwstania. W świetle dotychczasowych studiów zaproponowana też została ocena argumentacji autora De resurrectione w kontekście doktrynalnej polemiki w jego czasach.

Taking into account important changes that have taken place in the last 20 years in the fields of performance studies and cultural studies (especially de- and post-colonial studies) regarding the way in which local cultures and ethnicity are represented in the theatre and interpreted in the humanities, this article revises the ways of presenting local cultures in the Italian dialect theatre of the last decade. This analysis shows how a hegemonic (at least until recently) dramatic model developed by Eduardo de Filippo and based on producing nostalgia towards an idealised past of a local culture needs to be critically reformulated, especially from the perspective of a young generation of female artists who work in the field of dialect theatre. To this end, in this article, the author analyses the performing strategies of two of Emma Dante’s plays, mPalermu and Carnezzeria, to prove that localness is not an essentially understood characteristic of a certain community, but, rather, it should be seen as a complex performative, repetitive practice that is both bodily and discursive. Conversely, the author points out that these practices should be examined in depth and seen as a kind of cultural oppression that serves as a camouflage of some deeper imprinted relationships based on violence and domination. The examples of Emma Dante’s plays from the beginning of her career allow the author to also cast a critical gaze at an issue of primordialism, raised by Arjun Appadurai and seen as a way of viewing the Other. The latter reflects a voyeuristic pleasure of the Western world, coming from the sense of dominance over allegedly underdeveloped and primitive cultures. Emma Dante’s theatre, according to the author of this article, is an example of de-colonial artistic practice, as it subversively uses the voyeuristic inclinations of the viewer to denounce the violent character of local Sicilian scripts of behaviour that, until now, had usually been left unsaid in public debate.
Prendendo in considerazione i cambiamenti avvenuti negli ultimi 20 anni nel campo degli studi sulla performance e sulle rappresentazioni delle culture locali ed etniche e le metodologie elaborate nel campo degli studi de- e post -coloniali, Ewa Bal propone di rivedere le principali strategie di rappresentazione delle culture locali nel teatro dialettale italiano dell’ultimo decennio. Parte dunque dal presupposto che il modello drammaturgico elaborato da Eduardo de Filippo sia rimasto a lungo egemonico nel contesto teatrale italiano: specie nella maniera in cui produceva la nostalgia di un passato idealizzato della cultura dialettale. Questo modello, secondo l’autrice, va invece rivisto mettendo al suo confronto le artiste più recenti del teatro dialettale, che concettualizzano la cultura locale in maniera differente e propongono nuove strategie drammaturgiche. Bal analizza quindi le strategie performative di due opere di Emma Dante mPalermu e Carnezzeria per dimostrare che la cosiddetta identità culturale locale non è affatto una caratteristica essenziale (o “naturale”) di una certa comunità, ma piuttosto un insieme di pratiche discorsivo-corporali ripetibili che a forza di ripetersi diventano “naturali”. Vanno quindi viste piuttosto come una specie di minaccia o stigma culturale, che serve da camuffaggio alle più profonde relazioni di dominazione e violenza tra uomini e donne. Analizzando due esempi di spettacoli di Emma Dante risalenti agli inizi della sua carriera artistica, Bal guarda criticamente alla nozione del “primordialismo” sollevata da Arjun Appadurai e interpretata da lui come uno dei modi di rappresentare l’Altro che soddisfa lo sguardo patriarcale del mondo Occidentale nei confronti delle culture apparentemente meno avanzate o primordiali. Gli spettacoli di Emma Dante sovvertono questo sguardo voyeuristico, usandolo criticamente per denunciare la violenza nascosta sotto gli scenari comportamentali, gestionali e discorsivi della cultura locale siciliana e riportarla alla luce del dibattito pubblico.

The theme of the “stranger” in the Bible will be approached from the point of view of the relationship between an indigenous group and the “otherness” represented by those who sojourn in a foreign land. The words that the Hebrew language uses for “stranger” testifies to a nuanced perception of this overall category and also a nuanced attitude toward different kinds of “strangers.” The methodology applied is the Social Identity Approach, that focuses on intergroup relationship, and, the concept of Proximate Other. Among the “others,” the biblical Laws’ corpora give particular attention to gēr. The gēr is “other,” but he/she dwells within the Israelite in-group and shares with it his/her everyday life. Nine rules add a motive clause which refers to the experiential background of Jacob’s clan in Egypt. Four of these motive clauses refer to Israelites as gērim and come at the end of rules about only the gēr in Israel’s land. The theological background is expressed in Lev 25:23, which uses the word gērim for the relationship between God and his people. The proposal of the Bible is to bring near the “stranger,” so that the “stranger” is not more an “extraneous.”

The article La Rilettura del romanzo Il fu Mattia Pascal di Luigi Pirandello nell’otica del racconto cinematografico di Mario Monicelli, presents an individual story of Mattia Pascal and his reincarnations in Adriano Meis and the late Mattia Pascal. It concentrates on the journey of the main character, in the original dimension of time and space, in search of a new, happy life and of his identity. In reference to the subject matter included here, various different theories are applied to the cinematic analysis of the ‘new’ work of Pirandello.
Artykuł podejmuje próbę interpretacji/odczytywania powieści L. Pirandella Św. Pamięci Mattia Pascal przez znanego włoskiego reżysera filmowego M. Monicellego. Tematyka artykułu związana jest z jednej strony z rolą, jaką odgrywa perspektywa podróżowania, czyli nieustanna zmiana miejsc w czasoprzestrzeni Włoch i Francji, z drugiej zaś dotyczy złożonej problematyki tożsamości, czyli konfliktu osobowości głównego bohatera Mattia Pascal i jego reinkarnacji w Adriana Meis i św. pamięci Mattia Pascala. Analizie towarzyszą liczne teorie o charakterze literackim, filmoznawczym i kulturoznawczym, związane z omawianą tematyką zekranizowanej powieści.

Jesteśmy bytami funkcjonującymi w relacji i sama koncepcja tożsamości (identyczności) jest niewyobrażalna bez koncepcji odrębności, która to nieustannie nas porusza, prowokuje, czasem rani, niemniej zawsze nas przemienia i uwalnia. W takim znaczeniu relacja koewolucyjna może być cennym kluczem do krytycznej odpowiedzi na pytanie: czym jest przemoc, jej pierwotna logika i jej zróżnicowane praktyki? „Moje narodzenie – można powtórzyć za Aldo Capitinim – ma miejsce, gdy mówię «ty»” (“Colloquio corale”, 1956). Powrót do dobrych relacji, pod warunkiem że będą one autentyczne i wolne od wszelkiej pustej retoryki, oznacza zatem zaproponowanie bezprzemocowych strategii rozwiązywania konfliktów, począwszy od wychwycenia mechanizmów “redukcji” drugiego (do ofiary, do wroga, do rzeczy…) oraz utrzymywanie w horyzoncie poznawczym: r e - k o n s t r u k c j i nieustannie nowej wspólnoty.
We are beings in relationship and the identity concept itself is unthinkable without the concept of otherness, which moves us, provokes us, even hurts us but, at the same time, transforms us and makes us free. Thus the co-evolutive relationship is a precious critical key which allows us to read what violence is, its first logics, its differentiated praxis. «I am born – as Aldo Capitini said – every time I say “you”». Going back to good human relationships, provided they are loyal and free of empty rhetoric, means to propose a nonviolent strategy to tackle conflict, starting by denouncing the mechanism of reduction of the “other” (reduced to a victim, or an enemy or a mere object) and aiming to the construction of a new community.

L’8 dicembre 2018 al santuario della BVM a Gietrzwałd in Varmia (nord-est della Polonia), le parole dell’arcivescovo di Szczecin mons. Andrzej Dzięga, hanno ispirato e stimolato l’autore dell’articolo a fare almeno un primo passo ed aprire la discussione sulla questione dell’Europa, delle sue radici, della sua identità, della sua originale unità nel contesto attuale. Il tema è tanto urgente in quanto oggi appare evidente la crisi vissuta dall’Europa caratterizzata da una forte destabilizzazione culturale, religiosa, antropologica. Questo problema è stato molto approfondito da Giovanni Paolo II e dai suoi innumerevoli impegni e sforzi per ricordare ed indicare all’Europa l’unica via salutare ed efficace per tornare ad essere se stessa: il cristianesimo. A dimostrazione del suo interesse per le sorti dell’Europa, Giovanni Paolo II, nel 1980 ha proclamato co-patroni dell’Europa i santi Cirillo e Metodio, Cinque anni dopo, nel 1985,con la sua quarta enciclica, ha voluto riportare le figure di questi due santi evangelizzatori dei popoli slavi, come esempio dell’impegno profuso per l’unità e l’identità del Vecchio Continente.
December 8, 2018 in the Warmia Shrine of Our Lady of Gietrzwałd (Poland), Metropolitan of Szczecin Archbishop Andrzej Dzięga said words that became the inspiration for the author of this article to reflect on the issue of Europe, its roots, identity and unity in the current historical context. The subject seems all the more important, the more evident is the evident crisis experienced in Europe, in various areas of its life: cultural, social, religious, and anthropological. This problem was the subject of many reflections of John Paul II to the extent that the pope Pole in a determined way engaged and made great effort to show Europe that the only effective and sure way to renew the continent is to return to its sources, primarily to Christianity. An expression of his concern and activity to remind Europeans of their identity and unity was the establish 1980 of the Saints Cyril and Methodius, co-patrons of Europe. Five years later, in 1985, in his fourth encyclical, John Paul II recalled the figures of these holy evangelizers among the Slav peoples as a model of authentic and proper action for the good of Europe, the restoration of its identity and unity.

L’articolo svolge alcune considerazioni intorno ai modi di rappresentazione delle relazioni all’interno della comunità vigatese nei romanzi di Andrea Camilleri e più in particolare in Un filo di fumo. L’osservazione da cui partiamo è che la misurazione della quantità di sicilianismi e la valutazione della qualità della lingua siculo-italiana possa fornire dati utili solo se si combina la prospettiva semantica con quella pragmatica. Analizziamo perciò il rapporto che intercorre tra le indicazioni extralinguistiche fornite dal narratore e dai personaggi e i dialoghi disseminati nel romanzo per notare che per accedere al senso di molti enunciati occorre sospettare della lettera del testo. I parlanti fanno continuamente ricorso a strategie discorsive oblique, tra le quali l’ironia e il sarcasmo - per come vengono intesi nei più recenti studi di filosofia del linguaggio - risultano prevalenti. Per questa ragione - ovvero perché l’ironia non si dà quasi mai con un significante isolabile da un contesto ambientale, relazionale e storico - narratore e personaggi del romanzo hanno il compito di elargire al lettore informazioni indispensabili. Il mondo siciliano-vigatese che emerge da certi romanzi di Andrea Camilleri si caratterizza per una semiotica specifica, che può essere decifrata solo se si possiedono competenze linguistiche e culturali adeguate.
This article examines the representational modes of the relationships in Andrea Camilleri’s Vigata community and, in particular, those presented in Un filo di fumo. Our initial consideration is that only by combining a semantic perspective with a pragmatic one, the measurement of Sicilianisms and the evaluation of the quality of the Sicilian-Italian language can provide useful information. We need to analyse the relationship that exists between the extra-linguistic hints provided by the narrator and by the characters and the dialogues interspersed in the novel to realise that one needs to be wary of the literal sense of the text in order to fully grasp the significance of many statements. In other words, speakers make constant use of oblique strategies of communication, amongst which, this article argues, irony and sarcasm (in the current interpretation offered by the philosophy of language) emerge as prevailing. As irony is seldom presented as dislocated from an environmental, relational, and historical context, both the narrator and the characters are charged with the duty of providing indispensable information. The Sicilian-Vigatese world arising from some of Camilleri’s novels takes on a semiotic specificity, then, that can be deciphered only with adequate linguistic and cultural competence.

From the second half of the 20th century, the issue of women’s writing has been of considerable interest in literary studies, highlighting the need to know women as writers and as literary subjects, in order to understand female experience first-hand. This approach to written texts is based on two fundamental aspects of study: women as writers and the representation of women in the text. This has made it possible to examine how women are represented and what topics women writers prefer, for example, motherhood, a literary topos par excellence in Italian literature. Despite this, although motherhood is present in numerous works, the voices of actual mothers are largely absent: mothers and motherhood are in fact narrated from the point of view of daughters. In view of that, there are two main aims of this study: (1) to examine the possible reasons for the absence of the mother’s point of view and (2) to analyze some contemporary Italian literarature narrated by mothers themselves.

Artykuł zawiera krótki przegląd historyczny różnych stanowisk, dotyczących relacji między homoseksualizmem a kapłaństwem w Kościele katolickim. Przeprowadzone analizy dowodzą, że ocena zjawiska homoseksualizmu dzieli coraz bardziej nie tylko katolików, ale cały świat chrześcijański. Zrozumienie homoseksualizmu wymaga poważnych badań interdyscyplinarnych. Kluczowe pytanie dla katolików, które ma raczej charakter ontologiczny niż moralny, dotyczy wizji filozoficznej i teologicznej kapłana, który działa w „osobie Chrystusa” (in persona Christi). Zrozumienie istotnych elementów zgodności kapłana katolickiego z Chrystusem wydaje się kluczowe dla właściwej interpretacji związku między homoseksualizmem a kapłaństwem.
Homosexuality and the priesthood. The Gordian knot – for Catholics? This article provides a short overview on the relationship between homosexuality and the Catholic priesthood. The analysis reveals that the phenomenon of homosexuality increasingly divides the Christian world. The understanding of homosexuality requires interdisciplinary and serious analysis. The crucial question for Catholics, which is rather of an ontological than moral nature, concerns the vision of the priest who acts “in the person of Christ” (in persona Christi). The understanding of the essential elements of the conformity of the Catholic priest to Christ seems to be crucial for the correct interpretation of the relationship between homosexuality and the priesthood.
