Opis:
The present paper deals with verbal aspect in Polish and its grammatical semantics. It is assumed that aspect in Slavic languages in general and in Polish in particular is a twodimensional category – grammatical and lexical. Moreover, as regards meaning both grammatical and lexical aspectuality can be distinguished. In the grammatical sphere of the semantics of aspect we indicate some terminological deficits in that the grammatical aspectuality is not limited only to imperfectivity and perfectivity but it also encompasses its aoristic nature. Thus, we propose to call the imperfective aspect the procesual aspect, while the perfective aspect – non-procesual aspect. This is because non-procesuality implies both perfectivity and aoristic nature.

The present article deals with the semantics of tense forms of Präteritum and Perfectum in German. The author questions all the widely known theories on the meaning of Präteritum and Perfectum, demonstrating that, on the one hand, the complex past tense (Perfectum) does not always express both temporality and aspectuality (perfectivity), but also only temporality itself. On the other hand, the simple past tense (Präteritum) always contains both temporality and aspectuality, except for lexically-conditioned cases.

Language is considered a social phenomenon because all human beings communicate with their respective speech communities using the language of their own. Putnam’s theory of meaning combines such ingredients as the individual language experience world and social practice, all of which are ignored or downplayed by traditional theorizing about meaning. This article outlines some important aspects of Putnam’s idea and tries to answer the question of whether the stereotype semantics can solve the problem of meaning.

When embarking on a journey towards the constitution of epistemological semanticsone needs to describe clearly the key term ’epistemic’ and differentiate between this term and the term ’cognitive’, which has been used so far, but has in time become ambiguous. The author of this article does not present the history of using these terms. Instead he undertakes to clarify the term ’epistemic’ in order to enable himself to operate on problems linked with making epistemological semantics legitimate, including the problem of using specialized neologisms.

During the 1990s and at the beginning of the 21st century the confix euro- was part of the linguistic interest of many researchers. Its high frequency, the interesting culture-bound expansion of its semantic extent, and the development of its special functional use, all clearly and evidently distinct in comparison to German, made euro- a very popular lexical unit in many linguistic studies concerning the Polish language. Today, twenty years later, this confix still shows a high frequency in Polish; numerous compounds, containing euro- as a first constituent, can nowadays be characterised as inherent parts of Polish lexis. The special semantic spectrum and the pragmatic meaning of this confix make it necessary to consider euro- in a bilingual (general-language) dictionary. The current paper aims to show how the confix euro- is considered in different dictionaries today. Its lexicographical entry in monolingual dictionaries needs to be analysed to establish the basis for its consideration in bilingual dictionaries. It will become clear that some dictionaries call more attention to euro-, while in others euro- plays only a very marginal role or none at all. However, a satisfying and sufficient lexicographical fixation of euro- in mono- and bilingual dictionaries is still missing at present.

The paper addresses an issue that is usually hardly noticed, but some may have become aware of during the COVID-19 pandemic: There are various situations in which texts justifiably seem to be missing. However, the lack of texts does not necessarily affect all participants of that non-existent communicative situation. What these situations have in common is that there are apparently no texts that fulfill the situational expectations. Nevertheless, it is possible to draw conclusions from the resulting voids. From our point of view, such implicatures should definitely be considered from a text- linguistic perspective, especially if one understands the communicative practice of a society in all its facets as part of an empirically approachable textual reality. Thus, on the basis of selected examples, we will show that under certain circumstances even ‘no texts’ do indeed ‘express’ something which we can infer based on knowledge and experience, on the one hand, depending on the specific reading situation, and on the other hand, in connection with certain socially relevant discourses.

The present paper aims to indicate the relation of focus particles także, też, również (auch) to their domains in the Polish sentence. The study is based on language examples taken from the National Corpus of Polish (NKJP). The investigation poses the question whether the basic patterns which were noticed in relation to the German focus particle auch can also be found as governing the use of również, także, and też. Such regularities, if shown and verified, can inspire further contrastive research in the area of foreign language learning. The findings of the present study shall be viewed as combining the semantic and pragmatic approach to language.

Opis:
The confusion of „Elektronischer Datenverarbeitung“ and „Elektrischer Datenverarbeitung“ (Englisch: „Electronic data processing“ and „Electric data processing“ EDP) as correct and incorrect full forms oft the initial word EDV is the starting point for an investigation of the motivation and interpretation of several other initial words used in German language. Frequently the context prevents misinterpretation, but especially semantically demotivated short forms, which have not clear components cause misunderstanding. The obscurity can also allow multible use with different meanings like PS for „Pferdestärke“ and PS for „Post-skriptum“. Likewise homonymy of morphologically and semantically not related words can arise like VV as „Vollversammlung“, „Verkehrsverein“ and „Verwaltungsvorschrift“. The aptitude of different interpretations can go so far that short forms are used as well as homonymous and polysemous words. For example AA designates „Auswärtiges Amt“ in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the German federal government, also each „Arbeitsamt“ and support groups for „Anonyme Alkoholiker“. In place of context making clear what is meant sometimes the full form accompanies the short form. Apparently this is not felt as an unnecessary redundancy: „Ich war als Schüler in der Schülervertretung (SV) tätig“ (Frankfurter Rundschau, 17.11.1999, S. 29). Sometimes thr full form added to the initial word as an explanation is modified, not by ignorance or error but intentionally, whereas the iniotial word remains unmodified. Since the German „Bundeswehr“ was established in 1955 there is a department „Psychologische Kriegsführung (PSK)“ (Rhein-Zeitung, 24.9.2019, S. 19). Someday people realized that they didn’t like to think about “Kriegsführung“ (warfare) connected with the Bundeswehr, if need be about „Kampfhandlungen“ (combat operations). So PSK was renamed: „die Bundeswehrschule für Psychologische Kampfführung (PSK)“ (Die Zeit, 9.2.1968, S. 28). If you once have found pleasure in renaming initial words you can use this procedure for a joke by interpreting normal lexemes as initial words and giving them cute meanings: Ehe = Errare humanum est (Latin) ‚Irren ist menschlich‘. – Team = Toll, ein anderer macht’s.

Emotions are a central means of generating attention and thus help to generate and extend power of political actors. The example of Angela Merkel shows that the reversal, i.e. the renunciation of emotions, can also be a successful communication strategy. In contrast to the ideal type of the charismatic politician, the core of the ‘brand Merkel’ is the staging of non-staging. With an evaluation of two corpora, journalistic portraits on the one hand and her own statements made in interviews on the other, the ‘brand Merkel’ is illuminated from two perspectives. In particular, her handling of emotions illustrates the interlocking of self-image and external image, which is made possible by taking up and reinterpreting criticism.

By way of this article the author seeks to construe epistemological semantics. To this end the author presents his arguments in several aspects as regards a) concepts, b) terms, c) subject matter, d) methods and e) analysis of expressions excerpted from texts. The author’s concept is based on hypotheses employed in anthropocentric linguistics and frame semantics. One of the building blocks of epistemological semantics is constituted by so called epistemic formants of knowledge, understood as the foundation of epistemic experience, as the base for the frames of epistemic knowledge, and hence also as the framework for the constitution of meanings and expressions formed by an individual. As important seem a strict delimitation of the subject area of epistemological semantics and the defining of resultant tasks to be undertaken by linguists. It transpires that both the subject area and the resultant tasks have up till now been restricted almost exclusively to ‘meaning’, without clear reference to the underlying cognitive acts. Methods of the work are rooted in idiocentric (individual) and polycentric (common) approaches known in linguistics. The results of the empirical analysis have been presented and exemplified by a selected specialised neologism from the field of music of Ancient Greece.

Heroes are omnipresent in our communicative everyday life – and they are often staged in the style of superheroes. In this way, a superhero iconography has been established, which has a significant influence on the process of creating meaning. Language constitutes our reality. Therefore, the use of superhero iconography reflects cultural changes, but at the same time it also contributes to the transfer of heroic ideas into the present. Overall, the research suggests that Germany is not so much a “post-heroic” society as a “super-heroic” society.

Body in Motion: On the Figurativity in the Language of Modern Dancers. A Cognitive Perspective. The language used by modern dancers in dance workshops and/or lessons is an understudied research area for several reasons, e.g. lack of developed analysis methodology, insufficiently deep awareness of one’s own body indispensable for understanding of motion descriptions, linguistic diversity of existing dance schools, multimodal nature of the dance itself and lack of conventionalised and objective vocabulary. Thus, considering the two latter points the aim of the paper is to analyse a small corpus of motion descriptions used by the teachers and students of the Lublin Dance Theatre. Drawing on the cognitive linguistic methodology we conclude that the analysed expressions are used figuratively and divide them into three metaphor groups: conceptual metaphors, frame-based metaphors and metaphors pertaining to the prominent role of space in a dance situation.
