    Opis:
    Swearing and cursing are immediate and obvious expressions of emotions. While this kind of communication almost certainly exists in almost all cultures and languages, studies about it are generally limited to the individual language, or are often conducted from a popular science perspective. As far as the German language is concerned, the use of insulting and swear words is associated with the discourse of scatology, morphologized and lexicalized in word formation, phraseologisms, etc. Yet, for the Latin language such analyses are almost completely missing. My contribution aims at a typological comparison of Latin and German, especially in the period of their direct contact – the Middle Ages.

    The present paper deals with the relationship between contrastive linguistics on the one hand and foreign language teaching on the other hand, more precisely, with the influence exerted by the first on the latter. It goes without saying that a teacher who teaches his mother tongue is expected to teach it as completely and correctly as possible. Yet the complete and correct teaching of any language depends on the teacher’s complete and correct knowledge of the given language and, comes to that, his awareness of this knowledge. It could be shown and proven on various examples that this aim can only be reached by the way of analyzing an other / a foreign language and comparing it with the language / the mother tongue to be teached, that, as much as paradoxical this may sound, self-understanding quite often needs the understanding of the other.

    The aim of this study is to analyze and compare the use of nominalized verbs and adjectives in abstracts of research articles in linguistics written by German- and Polish-speaking scientists. The paper begins by describing academic texts as a subject of (comparative) linguistic investigation. The next section focuses on structure and pragmatic features of abstracts as components of research articles. Subsequently the role of nominalization as one of the strategies of syntactic compression (also called syntactic condensation) and as an element of nominal style in academic texts is discussed. The next part presents the results of qualitative analysis of the data gained from 20 German and 20 Polish abstracts of research articles in linguistics. The concluding section 6 sums up the presented study and offers some recommendations for further research.

    The object of the study presented in the paper are Yiddish proverbs. The aim of the paper is a linguistic analysis of selected proverbs and their connections with the Polish-language context. The Yiddish language namely has developed in contact with other languages, and one of the languages highly relevant for the Yiddish language, influencing its development, was the Polish language. The richness of Yiddish proverbs has also left its mark on the Polish language, as is evidenced by the presence of Jewish proverbs in Polish. The focus here lies on lexical and structural phenomena characteristic for both languages. Under examination is the extent to which the structure of Yiddish proverbs corresponds with the structure of the Polish language and what lexemes are the result of an interaction at the language level and the sociocultural level.
    Przedmiot badań, zaprezentowanych w artykule stanowią przysłowia występujące w języku jidysz. Celem artykułu jest analiza językowa wybranych przysłów w odniesieniu do języka polskiego. Język jidysz rozwijał się bowiem w kontakcie z innymi językami a jednym z ważniejszych języków, mających wpływ na jego rozwój, był język polski. Bogactwo przysłów języka jidysz także pozostawiło swój ślad, o czym świadczą żydowskie przysłowia w języku polskim. W centrum uwagi znajdują się zjawiska leksykalne i strukturalne, charakterystyczne dla obu języków. Analizuje się, na ile struktura przysłów języka jidysz koresponduje ze strukturą języka polskiego oraz jakie leksemy są rezultatem interakcji na płaszczyźnie językowej i społeczno-kulturowej.

    The current German discourse on euthanasia may readily be reduced to the main topic of ‘Pro vs. Contra active euthanasia’. In this respect, we are dealing not so much with a factual debate but, rather, with attempts at exerting considerable influence on opponents’ emotional attitude towards (active) euthanasia. Based on publicly communicated texts, the Author identifies contrasting modes of thought which, during the last two decades, have determined a set of emotionally charged arguments thus constituting the discourse topic as a communicative reality. It will be shown that opponents of the discourse support the contrasting emotional assessment of (active) euthanasia by means of context-specific topoi of argumentation. Since these topoi cannot be described linguistically without making reference to a cognitive-semantic representation format, we will use the frame approach as a more comprehensive model. Based on knowledge-based analysis that specific knowledge will be elicited, which, on a deep semantic level, underlies various competing discourse contributions and constitutes a discourse topic based on an excerpt of a thinking pattern typical of its time.
    Der aktuelle deutsche Sterbehilfediskurs lässt sich auf das Hauptthema „Pro vs. Contra (aktive) Sterbehilfe“ reduzieren, wobei es weniger um eine Sachdebatte als um eine Beeinflussung der emotionalen Einstellung zur (aktiven) Sterbehilfe beim Diskursgegner geht. Aus öffentlich kommunizierten Texten werden die kontrastierenden Denkweisen ermittelt, die innerhalb der letzten zwei Jahrzehnte die emotional geführte Argumentation bestimmen und damit das Diskursthema als kommunikative Wirklichkeit konstituieren. Gezeigt wird, dass die Diskursgegner die kontrastierende emotionale Bewertung der (aktiven) Sterbehilfe mit Hilfe von kontextspezifischen Argumentationstopoi stützen. Da diese linguistisch nicht ohne Bezug auf ein kognitiv-semantisches Repräsentationsformat beschreibbar sind, wird der Frame-Ansatz als das umfassendere Modell herangezogen. Im Ergebnis der wissensbezogenen Analyse wird dasjenige verstehensrelevante Wissen eruiert, das den konkurrierenden Diskursbeiträgen tiefensemantisch zugrunde liegt und einen Ausschnitt zeittypischen Denkens zum Diskursthema ausmacht.

    Opis:
    Ulrich Engel hat mit seinen Publikationen zur deutschen Grammatik, zur Verbvalenz und zur kontrastiven Linguistik große Wirkung auf die internationale germanistische Linguistik ausgeübt. Weniger bekannt ist, dass er mit seinem Werk auch andere linguistische Teildisziplinen beeinflusst hat, die davon bis heute profitieren. Dependenzielle Ansätze spielen bei der maschinellen Syntaxanalyse mittlerweile eine zentrale Rolle, und bei der Entwicklung von Systemen zur maschinellen Übersetzung haben Engels Arbeiten ebenfalls ihre Spur hinterlassen. Der Aufbau von Sprachressourcen in Gestalt von „Baumbanken“ kann auf Engels Grammatikkonzeption zurückgreifen, und auch zur neuerlich florierenden Konstruktionsgrammatik bestehen klare Bezüge. Im Beitrag werden diese weniger bekannten Einwirkungen von Engels Werk in andere Bereiche dargestellt und in ihrer andauernden Aktualität gewürdigt.
    With his publications on German grammar, on verb valency and on contrastive linguistics, Ulrich Engel has had a great impact on international German linguistics. It is less well known that his work has also influenced other sub-disciplines of linguistics, which still benefit from it today. Dependential approaches now play a central role in machine syntax analysis, and Engel’s work has also left its mark on the development of machine translation systems. The development of language resources in the form of “tree banks” can fall back on Engel’s grammar conception, and there are also clear references to the newly flourishing construction grammar. In this article, these lesser-known influences of Engel’s work on other areas are presented and their ongoing relevance is acknowledged.

    This paper focuses on the question of conditions under which a written or a spoken phrase can be interpreted as ‘critical’. After all, the possibility to express something in different ways—contrasted with the expressions that have already been uttered - is one of the main features of language in use. Contrastive discourse linguistics as critical practice interrelates expressions from different languages. In this way, it shows alternative expressions and thoughts beyond their own discursive environment.
    Punktem wyjścia podjętych w pracy rozważań jest odpowiedź na pytanie dotyczące warunków, które muszą zostać spełnione, by móc uznać realizację jakiegoś wyrażenia za ‘krytyczne’ na tle innych. Każdy odmienny sposób wyrażania (pojmowany tutaj jako ciągłe re-formułowanie i tym samym kontrastowanie z tym, co zostało już powiedziane, czyli proces nieodłącznie wpisany w codzienną komunikację) stanowi wszakże podstawową właściwość języka w użyciu. Skupiając się na relacjach wyrażeń pochodzących z różnych języków, kontrastywna lingwistyka dyskursu w ujęciu krytycznym, ukazuje na ich tle alternatywne możliwości wyrażania i sposoby myślenia.
    Ausgangspunkt ist die Frage, welche Bedingungen erfüllt sein müssen, um die sprachliche Realisierung eines Ausdrucks im Kontrast zu anderen Ausdrücken als ,kritisch‘ bewerten zu können. Schließlich ist das Anders-Sagen als stetige Re-Formulierung und der damit einhergehende alltägliche gesellschaftliche Vorgang der Kontrastierung zu bereits Gesagtem eine grundlegende Eigenschaft von Sprache im Gebrauch. Kontrastive Diskurslinguistik als kritisches Verfahren verstanden setzt Ausdrücke unterschiedlicher Sprachen in Beziehung und zeigt dadurch alternativen Ausdrucks- und Denkweisen auf.

    This paper presents an overview of the activities and results of the European Network of German and Contrastive Linguistics (GerCoLiNet), which was part of the European University Alliance 4EU+ (May 2021 – June 2022). With the cooperation of five European universities (Copenhagen, Milan, Paris, Prague, Warsaw) as well as the Institute for German Language (Mannheim) as an external partner, the network put together a training programme for MA and PhD students of German language and literature at the universities involved in the project. Developed within the framework of contrastive linguistics, the programme takes into account empirical approaches to both theoretical and applied aspects with special attention paid to the fields of Corpus Linguistics, Lexicology, Lexicography, and Discourse Analysis. In keeping with the basic ideals of Flagship 2, i.e. Europeanness, data literacy and multilingualism, particular emphasis was placed on networking among students and young academics within the 4EU+ Alliance. In this paper I first discuss the role and the importance of German, the exclusive lingua franca within the project, as an identity-forming element. Then, I explain the four main phases of the project; finally, I outline some innovative teaching strategies which were used to promote and increase interaction between partners as well as between the students involved in the project.

    Im Fokus des vorliegenden Textes liegt das Problem des Übersetzens deutscher und polnischer Gerichtsbenennungen. Aufgrund einer Analyse der in der rechtswissenschaftlichen Literatur und in den Rechtswörterbüchern gängigen Übersetzungsformen stellt der Autor fest, dass die Übersetzungen der deutschen und der polnischen Gerichtsbenennungen den Empfängern in vielen Fällen nicht ermöglichen, die entsprechende Institution zu erkennen, was die Verständlichkeit der Zieltexte deutlich beeinträchtigt.Unter Hinweis auf bestehende Divergenzen zwischen den deutschen und den polnischen Gerichten überlegt der Autor, ob Unterschiede, die zwischen zwei Institutionen verschiedener Rechtssysteme bestehen, in der Übersetzung immer signalisiert werden sollen. In Anlehnung an die Theorie der Rechtsvergleichung werden diejenigen Bedeutungsmerkmale festgestellt, die in der Rechtskommunikation und somit auch in der Rechtsübersetzung wesentlich sind. Vor diesem Hintergrund versucht der Autor die Frage zu beantworten, wie Gerichtsbezeichnungen übertragen werden können, und vielleicht sollen, damit der Zieltext an Verständlichkeit nicht verliert. Diesbezüglich werden drei Übersetzungsverfahren vorgeschlagen und in einer analytischen Übertragung der deutschen und der polnischen Gerichtsbenennungen angewendet.Es wird hier das Ziel verfolgt, zur Verständlichkeit der Übersetzungen juristischer Texte beizutragen und zugleich eine Alternative für umschreibende Übersetzungen der Gerichtsbezeichnungen vorgeschlagen.
    W niniejszym tekście podjęty został problem przekładu nazw niemieckich oraz polskich nazw sądów. Na podstawie analizy używanych form tłumaczeń w literaturze prawniczej oraz w słownikach autor stwierdza, że przekłady te są często na tyle nieczytelne, że nie pozwalają one odbiorcom określić ani instytucji kraju języka wyjściowego, ani tej języka docelowego, co w znacznym stopniu ogranicza zrozumiałość tekstów docelowych.Wskazując na różnice istniejące pomiędzy sądami niemieckimi i polskimi, autor zastanawia się, czy w przekładzie należy zaznaczać każdego rodzaju dywergencje, występujące między instytucjami dwóch różnych systemów prawnych. W oparciu o teorię komparatystyki prawniczej wskazane zostają te elementy znaczeniowe, które odgrywają istotną rolę w komunikacji prawniczej oraz przekładzie tekstów tego rodzaju. W dalszej części autor zastanawia się, w jaki sposób nazwy sądów mogą, albo powinny być przetłumaczone, aby instytucja kraju języka wyjściowego i decelowego były w translacie rozpoznawalne. W odpowiedzi na to pytanie zaproponowane zostają trzy techniki, których zastosowanie zostaje w tekście przedstawione w analitycznym przekładzie niemieckich i polskich nazw sądów.Przedstawione techniki tłumaczeniowe mają umożliwić poprawę czytelności przekładów prawniczych, a ponadto mają one stanowić alternatywę dla często stosowanego przekładu opisowego nazw sądów.
    The focus of this paper is centered on the translation of German and Polish court names. Based on a thorough analysis of the translation terms used in legal literature and dictionaries, the author concludes that the court names are often being translated in a way that makes it impossible for the reader to correctly identify the institution in question, thus undermining the comprehensibility of the target texts significantly.Pointing to the differences between the court systems of Germany and Poland, the author contemplates whether the dissimilarities between two institutions from different legal systems need always to be marked in the translation. On the basis of the comparative law theory, the meaning features essential for both legal communication and legal translation are identified and presented.In the next part, the author examines how to translate the court names so that the institution at issue is instantly recognizable in the target text. As a result, three comprehensive translation techniques are proposed.The presented translation techniques shall contribute to improving the comprehensibility of legal texts, and constitute an alternative to the  descriptive translation of these institutions.

    School textbooks have rarely been examined by text linguistics up to now, yet they appear particularly interesting from the perspective of contrastive studies. As an important element in societies’ education systems, textbooks are interrelated with many other texts (from curricula to examinations) and, in certain countries, have to be licensed by governmental authorities. Textbooks are not genres in the strict sense. Rather, they represent a complex multimedia ensemble of different modules, and in many cases their coherent sense may be reconstructed only in classroom work. This paper uses history textbooks (chapters on the Russian Revolution) as examples to demonstrate such particularities, taking into account bi- and multi-national projects. An explorative study of school textbooks used in England, France, Germany, as well as German- and French-speaking Switzerland presents different levels of analysis (covering content and form) and shows considerable variations not only across, but also within nations and linguistic areas.
    Schulbücher haben bislang in der Textlinguistik wenig Interesse gefunden, stellen aber gerade für kontrastive Studien einen besonders aufschlussreichen Gegenstand dar: Sie stellen ein Element im Erziehungssystem der Gesellschaft dar, sind mit vielen anderen Texten vernetzt (von Lehrplänen bis zu Prüfungen) und unterliegen in bestimmten Ländern direkter staatlicher Kontrolle. Es handelt sich nicht um eine Textsorte im engen Sinne, sondern um einen komplexen und multimedialen Verbund verschiedener Bausteine, aus denen teilweise erst im Unterricht ein kohärentes Ganzes rekonstruiert werden kann. Der Beitrag stellt diese Zusammenhänge am Beispiel von Lehrwerken für den Geschichtsunterricht vor und bezieht dabei auch bi- und multinationale Projekte ein. Eine Untersuchung von Lehrwerken (Kapitel zur Russischen Revolution) für England, Frankreich, Deutschland und die deutsch- und französischsprachige Schweiz stellt Analysemöglichkeiten auf verschiedenen Ebenen (inhaltlich und formal) vor und zeigt, dass mit relativ großer Varianz der Lehrmittelgestaltung nicht nur zwischen, sondern auch innerhalb von Nationen und Sprachräumen zu rechnen ist.

    Positioning Theory represents a useful approach for studying cultural conceptualizations and patterns of language use. The notion could also be implemented in cross-cultural research, for example in contrastive discourse studies. Nevertheless, cross-cultural studies of positioning are rare. The aim of this paper is to elaborate foundations for further methodological considerations and practical applications of the Positioning Theory in contrastive discourse studies. It gives theoretical considerations, reflects existing literature where the notion is implemented in discourse studies and presents examples from a pilot study conducted to analyse the cross-cultural potential of positioning. By doing so, it identifies the possibilities and methodological challenges of the notion that arise when it is implemented in contrastive discourse analysis, beyond its initial role in Interaction Analysis. The implementation of Positioning Theory in contrastive discourse studies seems useful to shed light on specific cultural positions as well as formal and functional patterns of discursive positioning practices and resources. A contrastive discourse analysis that aims at cross-culturally comparing positioning activities requires extensive reflections on the analytical and methodological as well as theoretical levels. A requirement for the design of such studies is the use of operationalizable categories as analysed objects. Further challenges emerge regarding implicit positioning and the need to include cultural knowledge.
    Die Positionierungsforschung stellt einen nützlichen Ansatz für die Untersuchung kultureller Konzeptualisierungen und Sprachgebrauchsmuster dar, der sich auch für kulturvergleichende Studien anbieten würde. Positionierung kann sich etwa für die kontrastive Analyse von Diskursen nützlich erweisen. Trotzdem erscheinen kontrastive Untersuchungen von Positionierungsaktivitäten selten. Ziel dieses Beitrags ist es, Grundlagen für weitere Überlegungen und praktische Anwendungen des Positionierungsansatzes in der kontrastiven Diskurslinguistik herauszuarbeiten. Dabei geht es darum, Möglichkeiten und Herausforderungen des ursprünglich gesprächs- und interaktionsanalytischen Positionierungsansatzes für seine Anwendung in kontrastiven Diskursanalysen sichtbar zu machen. Zu diesem Zweck werden theoretische Überlegungen und eine Auswertung diskurslinguistischer Arbeiten, die sich der Positionierungstheorie bedienen, vorgenommen. Zugleich werden Beispiele für die kontrastive Anwendung des Ansatzes gegeben, die aus einer Pilotstudie zum kulturvergleichenden Potenzial von Positionierungsforschung kommen. Die Implementierung des Positionierungsansatzes in die kontrastive Diskurslinguistik erscheint nützlich, um spezifische kulturelle Diskurspositionenals auch formale und funktionale Besonderheiten sprachlicher Positionierungspraktiken und -ressourcen zu beleuchten. Eine kontrastive diskurslinguistische Analyse, die auf den Vergleich von Positionierungsaktivitäten abzielt, verlangt einer vertieften Reflexion auf der analytisch-methodischen und auf der erkenntnistheoretischen Ebene. In diesem Zusammenhang ist es eine Anforderung für die Ausgestaltung einer kontrastiven diskurslinguistischen Positionierungsuntersuchung, operationalisierbare Kategorien als den Untersuchungsgegenstand zu bestimmen. Weitere Herausforderungen zeigen sich in Hinsicht auf implizite Positionierungen und die Notwendigkeit, kulturelles Wissen miteinzubeziehen.
