    The attempt of a modern interpretation of the concept of charity which is pivotal to Jewish-Christian ethics as well as the occidental culture can hardly succeed without a dialogue with those disciplines studying the secular version of it, namely altruism. The different approaches all converge in the question: Why do humans act altruistically? The present article tries to gather the most important answers and to portray the controversial debate on the explanation and evaluation of altruistic behavior in a way that underlines the interdisciplinary connectivity of an essential concept in theology.

    There is yet no research on the charitable engagement of the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul in Silesia in 19th and 20th century. They only were a minor community among the wide range of German catholic communities and orders in Silesia, but despite this they had a great impact on hospital charity in the region. This article deals with the importance of their work during the time of the Third Reich and Second World War in the Saint Anne’s Hospital in Breslau. The information has been derived from new sources found in the archives of the motherhouse of the Daughters in Cologne. The text traces their history from the beginning of the order’s engagement in Saint Anne’s Hospital at the end of the 19th century, discusses the structure and organization of their work until 1933, and their further development until the outbreak of the Second World War. The sisters’ charitable work during the War up to the end of the German period in Silesia concludes the paper. Attention is given to how the Daughters took care of the sick and the weak, and describes their service at the time of hostilities and their final evacuation from Silesia.
    W dotychczasowej literaturze brakuje badań nad działalnością charytatywną Zgromadzenia Sióstr Miłosierdzia św. Wincentego a Paulo na Śląsku w XIX i XX wieku. Choć Zgromadzenie było niewielką wspólnotą na tle szerokiego spektrum niemieckich katolickich wspólnot i zakonów na Śląsku, wywarło ogromny wpływ na działalność w szpitalach w tym regionie. Niniejszy artykuł ma na celu przedstawienie znaczenia pracy szarytek w okresie III Rzeszy i II wojny światowej w szpitalu św. Anny w ówczesnym Breslau na podstawie nowych źródeł odnalezionych w archiwum ich domu macierzystego w Kolonii. Omówiono historię Zgromadzenia od początku zaangażowania w prace szpitala św. Anny pod koniec XIX wieku, strukturę i organizację ich działań do 1933 roku oraz dalszy rozwój aż do wybuchu II wojny światowej. W ostatniej części artykułu zaprezentowano działalność charytatywną sióstr w czasie wojny aż do końca okresu niemieckiego na Śląsku. Zwrócono również uwagę na sposób sprawowania opieki nad chorymi i słabymi, służbę Sióstr w czasie działań wojennych oraz ostateczną ewakuację ze Śląska.

    Auf dem Gebiet des historischen Pommern ist eine große Zahl von Inschriften aus vorund nachreformatorischer Zeit erhalten, in denen die Urheber dieser Texte ihrer Frömmigkeit Ausdruck verleihen oder die Rückschlüsse auf deren Frömmigkeit erlauben. Der für die Untersuchung dieser Überlieferung in Betracht gezogene Zeitraum beginnt mit dem ersten Auftreten von Inschriften in Pommern im 13. Jahrhundert und reicht bis zur Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts. Nach einführenden Erläuterungen zum allgemeinen Charakter von Inschriften und zum Begriff der Frömmigkeit werden zwei Gruppen von Inschriftenträgern – Glocken und Grabplatten – vorgestellt. Zunächst wird dargelegt, welche Gattungen von Inschriften im Allgemeinen auf ihnen anzutreffen sind. Daran anschließend richtet sich der Fokus auf religiös motivierte Inschriften, die Rückschlüsse auf die Frömmigkeit ihrer Urheber erlauben. Das besondere Augenmerk liegt auf Veränderungen einzelner Textgattungen im 16. Jahrhundert, von denen manche auf veränderte Glaubensvorstellungen infolge der Reformation, andere hingegen auf einen konfessionsübergreifenden Wandel der Gesellschaft zurückzuführen sind.
    In the historical Pomerania there are many inscriptions dated from the times of the Reformation (before and after it), in which their authors expressed their piety or it is possible to come to some conclusions about it. That tradition has been analysed in the period of time that starts when the first inscriptions of that type appeared in Pomerania in the 13th century and stretches out till the mid-17th century. After the general character of the inscriptions and the concept of piety have been preliminarily explained two carriers of inscriptions – bells and tombstone – are introduced; first, it has been described what type of inscriptions may be found on them; next, the article focuses on the inscriptions inspired by religious motives, which makes it possible to come to the conclusions about the piety of their authors. A special attention has been paid to the changes in various texts in the 16th century; some of them may have resulted from the beliefs that were modified by the Reformation, whereas others may be associated with social changes within various faiths.
