    This article will examine Marion Gräfin Dönhoff’s articles published in the Hamburg-based “Die Zeit“ weekly in the years 1946-1970. Dönhoff, a renowned German journalist, had to leave East Prussia and her family estate in 1945. The articles under analysis demonstrate an evolution of her views on the problem of losing the so-called German East, from the initial inability to come to terms with the new postwar territo-rial reality, to the eventual recognition that Germany’s loss of provinces in the East is permanent and final.

    Im vorliegenden Beitrag wurde der Versuch unternommen, anhand der in der Wochenschrift „Die Zeit“ erschienenen Artikel auf das Bild des darin thematisierten ehemaligen Deutschen Ostens zu verweisen. In den gefundenen Aussagen dominiert das Bild eines verlassenen Landes, in dem weder die noch vereinzelt verbliebenen Deutschen noch die eingeströmten Neuankömmlinge kein echtes Zuhause finden können. Die Zeit-Publizisten sind darum bemüht, den provisorischen Charakter des Status quo zu unterstreichen, und wollen sich nicht damit abfinden, die strittigen Gebiete als verloren zu sehen.
    This paper will examine a variety of articles printed in the Die Zeit weekly in the first few years after World War II and devoted to the lost German East; it will also discuss the prevailing perception of this territory during the above mentioned period. The dominant image emerging in those articles is that of an abandoned country in which neither the few remaining Germans nor the newly established Polish settlers feel quite at home. The Die Zeit weekly journalists try to emphasize the temporary nature of the area under discussion and seem to be unable to come to terms with the new territorial order agreed upon in Potsdam.
    Niniejszy przyczynek zajmuje się analizą wypowiedzi prasowych w tygodniku Die Zeit, których tematem jest utracony Niemiecki Wschód, oraz jest próbą ukazania ówczesnego obrazu tych ziem. W wyszukanych artykułach dominujący jest obraz kraju opuszczonego, w którym ani pozostali tam nieliczni Niemcy, ani przybyli na te ziemie nowi osadnicy polscy nie potrafią poczuć się jak u siebie. Publicyści tygodnika Die Zeit usiłują zaakcentować prowizoryczny charakter omawianych ziem oraz manifestują swój brak zdolności do zaakceptowania ustalonego w Poczdamie terytorialnego porządku.

    The essence of the presented article is the analysis of four textbooks for teaching the German language which looks into typical elements of German culture as well as cultural universals. The analysis of the following textbooks: Stufen 3, Moment Mal 2, Mittelpunkt B2 and Mittelpunkt C1 has indicated that older ones (more than 10 years older) devoted more attention to typical German culture phenomena and culturally conditioned Polish-German differences than the most recent textbooks where universal areas of reality have been accepted, e.g. travelling, professional life, means of payment, environmental protection. Moreover, new phenomena such as globalization, internationalization, cloning and genetically modified food were mentioned in the textbooks published in 2008.

    The title of the story What Remains by Christa Wolf denotes one of the main topics of the present discussion about German literature after 1989. The article presents the new questions (e.g. one or two German literature(s)? What does ‘GDR literature‘ mean? Is it a ‘special case’?) and changing conditions of the study of East German literature. A few new historical works discussing German literature since 1945, mainly since the reunification, and a few theoretical approaches (e.g. GDR literature as a chronotope and as regional literature) are presented.

    Opis:
    In contemporary academia, there are no mono-semantic definitions of either applied linguistics or discursive syntax. I analyse how applied linguistics is understood in Russia, Poland and Germany, and present syntax as a part of applied intercultural linguistics. The analysed data are reflective texts by Russian and German participants of the intercultural project “Rilke and Russia” that took place in 2019, in Samara. I consider these texts for reflective discourse appearing as a result of speech acts realised as self-talk. In my analyses, I use methods that are specific for speech acts research on the one hand, and that are typical of syntax on the other. So, I identify the role subjects, their intentionality and the persons addressed. Then, I compare the syntactic means used by Russian and German role subjects and show that these means are influenced by national culture and mentality.

    This study investigates the position, content and pedagogy of Landeskunde in proficiency skills-focussed Dutch foreign language teaching. It analyses the course book used most frequently in Dutch secondary education for German as a foreign language: Neue Kontakte. This research examines the position of cultural content in course materials and in explicitly formulated learning goals. Moreover, it is investigated what cultural content is introduced and whether this is either integrated in language proficiency training and connected to the world of the learners. The results show that Neue Kontakte offers a broad range of cultural topics which are either linked to the Netherlands or Dutch or to the learners’ personal environment. Additionally, Landeskunde is integrated in language proficiency exercises. On the other hand, its status is considered weak; no cultural learning goals are formulated and hardly any repetition of cultural content and little critical reflection on the foreign and the own culture are observed.

    The present paper describes an investigation into the use of dictionaries and the results of a survey which was carried out among 202 Polish university students of German as a foreign language. The main aims are, on the one hand, to find out the level of dictionary awareness and dictionary culture and, on the other hand, to investigate if students know the monolingual learner’s dictionaries of German and are able to use them effectively.

    Opis:
    Der Artikel bildet eine auf Quellentexten fundierte Rekonstruktion der Weise, auf welche Novalis als Vertreter der deutschen Frühromantik den Begriff der Aufklärung versteht. Seiner Meinung nach sei die Aufklärung mit dem historischen Prozess oder mit der Bildungsgeschichte identisch, deren Ziel die allseitige Entwicklung aller Neigungen der Menschlichkeit sei. Enger gefasst kann die Aufklärung auf das 18. Jahrhundert bezogen werden, das als Epoche der Aufklärung bezeichnet wurde. Novalis macht auf die historischen Prämissen aufmerksam, die den Unterschied zwischen der französischen und der deutschen Aufklärung bedingen (u. a. die Reformation in Deutschland und die Französische Revolution). Als Anfang der neuen und höheren Etappe der Aufklärung in Deutschland betrachtet er die transzendentale Philosophie von I. Kant und J. G. Fichte, die Weimarer Klassik von J. W. Goethe und F. Schiller und die historische Philosophie von F. Schlegel – dem Vertreter der deutschen Frühromantik.
    Based on original/period texts, the article constitutes the reconstruction of the ways in which Novalis (a representative of the early German Romanticism) understands the term “Enlightenment”. To him, the Enlightenment is coterminous with the historical process of the history of culture (Bildungsgeschichte), the aim of which is the comprehensive development of humanity’s holistic abilities and competences. In its narrower sense, the Enlightenment may refer only to the eighteenth century, construed as “the Age of the Enlightenment”. In his research, Novalis emphasises the historical contexts that conditioned the differences between the Enlightenment in France and in Germany (among others the German Reformation and the French Revolution). He defines the beginning of the new and higher phase of the German Enlightenment as Kante’s and Fichte’s Transcendental Philosophy, the Weimar Classicism of Goethe and Schiller as well as Schlegel’s Early German Romantic historical philosophy.
    Artykuł stanowi – udokumentowaną na tekstach źródłowych – rekonstrukcję sposobu, w jaki Novalis (reprezentant wczesnego romantyzmu niemieckiego) rozumie termin „oświecenie”. Jego zdaniem, oświecenie jest tożsame z procesem historycznym lub historią kultury (Bildungsgeschichte), której celem jest wszechstronny rozwój wszystkich predyspozycji człowieczeństwa. W wąskim znaczeniu oświecenie może być odnoszone do wieku XVIII, określanego jako wiek oświecenia. Novalis zwraca uwagę na historyczne przesłanki warunkujące różnicę między oświeceniem francuskim a niemieckim (m. in. reformację w Niemczech i rewolucję francuską). Za początek nowego i wyższego etapu oświecenia w Niemczech uznaje filozofię transcendentalną I. Kanta i J. G. Fichtego, klasycyzm weimarski J. W. Goethego i F. Schillera oraz filozofię historyczną F. Schlegla –reprezentanta wczesnego romantyzmu niemieckiego.

    The following article discusses the potentials of sites of memory of migration as a topic for teaching German as a foreign language, as they do not seem to have been thoroughly and systematically investigated or reflected upon so far. In the first part of the paper, the theoretical frames for combining the topic of migration with the concept of sites of memory are presented. In the second part, examples of ways of working with specific topics and media on sites of memory of migration in German as a foreign language classes are given and their possible potentials for supporting reflective cultural learning are examined.

    Literature for young readers in Eduard Trewendt’s publishing house in Breslau (1845–1903). Research-historic essay The article presents children and youth literature review which was published in the second half of 19th century in German publishing house of Eduard Trewendt in Breslau, especially in Trewendt‘s Jugendbibliothek series. The series consisted of 132 titles, was a great commercial success and secured for the publishing house monopoly position in Silesia. The books for children and youth offered to the readers entertainment, knowledge, shape personalities and moral values system. The authors included famous German writers e. g.: Franz Hoffmann, Karl Müller and Hedwig Prohl who wrote stories for girls. Trewendt also published German translations of well-read foreign authors e. g. Charles Dickens series. The publishing house also offered wide range of course books and other products for school children to facilitate learning process. Some of them reached all German speakers and were renewed many times.
