Im Beitrag wird über eine Studie zur kulinarischen Werbung aus der Presse der Freien Stadt Danzig aus den 20er und 30er Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts berichtet und kurz auf die vorläufigen Ergebnisse der Studie eingegangen. Es wird darauf hingewiesen, wie die Textsorte Werbeanzeige aus textlinguistischer und kommunikationswissenschaftlicher Perspektive beleuchtet werden kann und welche Erkenntnisse uns eine solche Vorgehensweise bringt. Werbeanzeigen – als Produkte gegenwärtiger Aktivitäten von Sprachgemeinschaften und Artefakte einer bestimmten Kultur – werden als Spiegel gesellschaftlicher und kultureller Zustände betrachtet. Es wird überlegt, welche Informationen über die damalige Küche, Kultur und Gesellschaft uns die Werbung ein Jahrhundert später liefert und wie die kulinarische Werbung nationales und internationales Zeitgeschehen regional und lokal verarbeitet.
The article presents a study of culinary advertising from the press of the Free City of Danzig of the 1920s and 1930s and briefly discusses the preliminary results of the research. The author of the article will discuss how this kind of text can be researched from the text-linguistic perspective and the perspective of communicative studies, and what conclusions such an approach will lead to. Advertisements – as products of contemporary activities of linguistic communities and artefacts of a particular culture – are seen as a mirror of social and cultural conditioning. The author of the article will consider what information about the cuisine, culture and the society of those times advertising provides us a century later and how advertisement processes national and international contemporary events on regional and local levels.

The aim of the article is an analysis of expressing of death and dying present in Gdańsk funeral sermons of 17th an 18th centuries. Funeral sermons, which were characteristic mainly for protestant communities, developed in central Germany. Yet it turned out that Gdańsk can also boast about the collection containing 485 copies. The material for the analysis has been excerpted from title pages constituting integral parts of sermons and life histories of the dead containing descriptions of the scenes of death. In the research the particular attention has been paid to the expressions of death and dying: whether the predominant were the standardized ones or creative, literal or euphemistic. Their contexts have also been analysed.
Określenia umierania i śmierci w gdańskich kazaniach pogrzebowych Celem artykułu jest analiza określeń umierania i śmierci zawartych w gdańskich kazaniach pogrzebowych pochodzących z XVII i XVIII wieku. Kazania pogrzebowe, charakterystyczne przede wszystkim dla gmin protestanckich, powstawały głównie w środkowych Niemczech. Okazuje się jednak, że zasobami liczącymi 485 egzemplarzy może się również pochwalić Gdańsk. Materiał do analizy został wyekscerpowany ze stanowiących integralną część kazań stron tytułowych oraz życiorysów zmarłych zawierających opis sceny śmierci. W badaniu zwrócono szczególną uwagę na to, czy przeważają zestandaryzowane czy kreatywne, dosłowne czy eufemistyczne określenia umierania i śmierci oraz w jakich kontekstach określenia te występują.

Der Text diskutiert in der Form von Dialogen verschiedene mögliche alternative Geschichten von Danzig. Die beiden in diesen Dialogen auftretenden Personen sind eine optimistische Stimme („Opto“) und eine pessimistische Stimme („Peso“). Sie sprechen über eine Vielzahl von Themen: Zum Beispiel darüber, was wäre, wenn Danzig dänisch geworden wäre, wenn der Deutsche Orden Danzig nicht verloren hätte, wenn Napoleon gegen Russland gewonnen hätte, wenn die Stadt nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg polnisch geworden wäre, wenn sie nach 1945 nicht wiederaufgebaut worden wäre, wenn es keine Solidarność gegeben hätte und auch keine weltbekannten Schriftsteller, die über Danzig schrieben. Der Text ist ein stellenweise ironischer Kommentar zur Bedeutung, die urbaner Geschichte oft im öffentlichen Leben zukommt, und versucht, neues Licht auf die lokale Vergangenheit zu werfen. Er ist ursprünglich als Eröffnungsrede für das Vierte Welttreffen der Danziger 2014 entstanden und wurde im polnischen Original 2015 erstmals veröffentlicht.
The text discusses in the form of dialogues different possible alternative histories of Danzig / Gdańsk. The two characters in those dialogues are an optimistic voice (“Opto”) and a pessimistic one (“Peso”), who are speaking about a variety of topics, i.e.: What would be, if Danzig were Danish, if the Teutonic Order wouldn’t have lost the town, if Napoleon had won against Russia, if the town got Polish after the First World War, if it wouldn’t have been rebuilt after 1945, if there were no Solidarność and no well -known writers writing novels about Danzig. Through its mildly ironic form the text critically comments the importance, which urban history is often given in public life, and attempts to throw some new light on the local past. It was written as a speech for the Fourth World Meeting of people from Danzig / Gdańsk in 2014 and first published in its original Polish version in 2015.
Co by było, gdyby Gdańsk … ? Alternatywne biografie miasta. Tekst zawiera przedstawione w formie dialogów różne możliwe alternatywne historie Gdańska. Dwie występujące w nim osoby to głos optymistyczny („Opto”) oraz głos pesymistyczny („Peso”). Rozmawiają o całym wachlarzu tematów, np. o tym, co by było, gdyby Gdańsk stał się miastem duńskim, gdyby Krzyżacy nie utracili Gdańska, gdyby Napoleon wygrał z Rosją, gdyby miasto po pierwszej wojnie światowej stało się częścią Polski, gdyby po 1945 roku nie zostało odbudowane, gdyby nie powstała tu Solidarność lub gdyby nie było żadnych pisarzy rangi światowej piszących o Gdańsku. Tekst jest częściowo ironicznym komentarzem do znaczenia, jakie w życiu publicznym często przypisywane jest miejskiej historii. Tekst ten powstał pierwotnie jako przemówienie na Czwarty Światowy Zjazd Gdańszczan w 2014 roku i po raz pierwszy ukazał się w polskim oryginale w 2015 roku.

This article examines the social protest movement against the socialist regime in the Baltic port cities of Szczecin and Gdańsk, in particular between 1970 and 1981. It intends to discuss the impact of these strikes on the formation of a regional and national political culture, which is widely connected to the concept of civil society, in a longer perspective. While Szczecin, after the bloody clashes with the regime’s law enforcement in mid-December 1970, saw a longer-lasting period of strikes, which led to an intervention by First Secretary Edward Gierek, these protests remained limited to the community of workers and did not yet challenge the rule of the Polish United Workers’ Party. They contributed, however, to the formation of a local Polish identity from below. However, in Gdańsk and, in a broader perspective, in the entire Polish Tricity (consisting of Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot) a close cooperation between workers and intellectuals emerged during the 1970s, which proved to be decisive during the strike of August 1980. In Szczecin, the similarly strong strike movement of summer 1980 lacked the national (and international) resonance of the protests in Gdańsk. In addition, the political impact and the collective commemoration (as well as the scholarly research) of the workers’ protests in the case of Szczecin remained mostly a local issue even after the fall of the socialist regime. Which stands, once again, in sharp contrast to the situation of Gdańsk.

In the magazine Unser Danzig published by ex-citizens of Gdańsk in the years of 1949–2008, one must pay attention not only to politically-engaged texts, but also to obituaries which present lives of the deceased and missing their lost fatherland. The aim of these obituaries is not only to inform about someone’s death, but also to acccept the regional origin of the deceased, which is presented by linguistic and paralinguistic means.
W wydawanym w latach 1949–2008 przez byłych Gdańszczan czasopiśmie Unser Danzig uwagę zwracają nie tylko teksty zaangażowane politycznie, ale również nekrologi dokumentujące drogi życiowe zmarłych i ich tęsknotę za utraconą małą ojczyzną. Ich funkcja polega nie tylko na zakomunikowaniu faktu czyjejś śmierci, ale również na zaakcentowaniu przynależności regionalnej zmarłego, co jest realizowane zarówno przy użyciu środków językowych, jak i pozajęzykowych.

Willibald Omankowski (geboren 1886 in Danzig, gestorben 1976 in Berlin) war Lehrer, Schriftsteller, Kritiker und Kommunalpolitiker und eine der wichtigsten Persönlichkeiten im Kulturleben der Freien Stadt Danzig. Er schrieb für die Tageszeitung „Danziger Volksstimme“ und die Zeitschrift „Ostdeutsche Monatshefte“, nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg – und nach einer Namensänderung zu Omansen – für die „Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung“. Unter seinen Gedichtbänden ragt „Danzig. Antlitz einer alten Stadt“ (1924) heraus. 2007 wurde sein lyrisches Werk unter dem Titel „Danzig zur Nacht / Gdańsk nocą“ von Andrzej Kątny und Jens Stüben neu ediert.
Willibald Omankowski (born in 1886 in Gdańsk, died in 1976 in Berlin) was teacher, author, critic and municipial politician and one of the most important personalities in the cultural life of the Free City of Danzig. He wrote for the newspaper “Danziger Volksstimme” and the magazine “Ostdeutsche Monatshefte”, after the Second World War – and after the change of name to Omansen – for the “Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung”. Among his books of poems stands out “Danzig. Antlitz einer alten Stadt” (1924). In 2007 his lyrical work was anew edited under the title “Danzig zur Nacht / Gdańsk nocą” by Andrzej Kątny and Jens Stüben.
Na 40-lecie śmierci poety Willibalda Omankowskiego/Omansena (1886–1976) Willibald Omankowski (ur. 1886 r. w Gdańsku, zm. 1976 r. w Berlinie) był nauczycielem, pisarzem, krytykiem literackim i politykiem jak również jedną z najważniejszych osobistości w życiu kulturalnym Wolnego Miasta Gdańska. Pisał dla gazety „Danziger Volksstimme” i magazynu „Ostdeutsche Monatshefte”, po II wojnie światowej – po zmianie nazwiska na Omansen – dla „Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung”. Wśród jego poetyckich tomików wyróżnia się „Danzig. Antlitz einer alten Stadt” (1924). W roku 2007 jego liryczne wiersze zostały wydane pod tytułem „Danzig zur Nacht / Gdańsk nocą” przez Andrzeja Kątnego i Jensa Stübena.

Der Beitrag untersucht die Transkulturalität von Wiktor Gomulickis 1896 veröffentlichtem Poem Pieśń o Gdańsku, einem der wenigen polnischen Gedichte über das Danzig des Wilhelminischen Kaiserreiches. Er zeigt, dass die antagonistische Zeichnung des deutsch-slawischen Konflikts im Danzig jener Zeit mit intertextuellen Referenzen zur deutschen Literatur (Heinrich Heine, Joseph von Eichendorff ) einhergeht, das Gedicht also durch die Spannung von Nähe und Distanz zur deutschen Hegemonialkultur geprägt ist. Einige ausgewählte Szenen des Poems werden unter Rückgriff auf interkulturelle Metaphern (Palimpsest, Störung) interpretiert.
The essay analyzes transculturalism of Wiktor Gomulicki’s poem Pieśń o Gdańsku, published in 1896, one of a few Polish poems about Gdańsk of the Wilhelmine Empire. It shows that antagonistic drawing of the German-Slavic conflict in Gdańsk of that period is accompanied by intertextual references to German literaturę (Heinrich Heine, Joseph von Eichendorff ), so the poem is characterized by tension of proximity and distance to the German hegemonic culture. The selected scenes of the poem are interpreted with recourse to intercultural metaphors (palimpsest, disruption).
